BOURGEOIS David

Filson, John [Daniel Boone]
Wilmington: Adams, 1784. FIRST EDITION. A classic of the early American frontier, this is the first book on Kentucky and the first published biography of Daniel Boone, dictated by the legendary frontiersman himself. "Boone's international fame was secured with the publication of 'The Adventures of Col. Daniel Boon' in John Filson's Discovery, Settlement and Present State of Kentucke in 1784 and its subsequent translation and reprinting in France and Germany the next year" (ANB). While Filson has clearly improved Boone's spelling and diction, this narrative provides an exciting firsthand view of the exploration and settlement of the old frontier. Boone's riveting tale concludes, "I can now say that I have verified the saying of old Indian who signed Col. Henderson's deed. Taking me by the hand, at the delivery thereof, Brother, says he, we have given you a fine land, but I believe you will have much trouble in settling it--My footsteps have often been marked with blood. ..." "Boone's significance to American history and culture is hard to overestimate, for in a very real sense it is impossible to discuss the frontier without discussing Boone. Historically and imaginatively, perhaps no single individual is more central to the frontier experience. ... [Boone is] the prototype of the frontier hero" (ANB). This is a rare untrimmed copy of a classic of the American frontier. The map called for on the title-page was printed separately in Philadelphia by Tenoor Rook and is virtually never found with the text (none since the Hoe copy, last sold in 1921). Modern calf. DISDIER, Francois-Michel
Etienne Charpentier 1784 - Tall folio (385 mm.). The entire book, including the text, was printed from engraved copper plates – 60 plates (an illustrated title page plate, 29 anatomical plates and 30 calligraphic letterpress plates). Bound in a contemporary or near contemporary binding with calf spine and decorative paste paper boards - rubbed, edges shelf worn, old ink stain on rear cover. Both the upper portion of the spine and the tail cap are carefully restored. Board corners are neatly repaired. Interior is very clean with an occasional miniscule spot of marginal foxing. Francois-Michel Disdier (1708-1781) was a professor of surgery and a drawing master at the Academy of Painting in Paris. His "Tableaux anatomiques," a deluxe anatomy book for physicians, was first published in 1758. Many of the plates were done by Crepy and Charpentier – some after the style of Vesalius and others following Eustachi. The engraved title page, designed by François Bouchet, depicts students in an anatomy class studying a cadaver. The whole scene is framed in ornate baroque style. Microcosmische Vorspiele
Frankfurt und Leipzig Böhme, 1784. (18 x 10,5 cm). (20) 128 (2w) S. Mit gestochenem Frontispiz. - Vereinzelt gering braunfleckig, sonst wohlerhalten. - Holzmann-Bohatta IV, 11172 und Weller, Druckorte I, 78 (beide geben Dippel als Verfasser an); Ackermann I, 64 und Brüning 5345 (beide unter Schütz); Duveen 402 (Anm.) und Ferguson II, 95 (Anm.) Bourgeois, David: [Ballooning]
Paris: Chez Cuchet, 1784. viii,143,[1]pp. Contemporary marbled wrapper. Wrappers a bit faded and edgeworn. Faint stain in the lower gutter throughout, else quite clean internally and near fine overall. In a folding paper box. One of the earliest histories of flight. This work is a supplement to Faujas de Saint-Fond, but completely separate, although published by the same publisher. It contains a history of notions of flight, with segments on Roger Bacon, Wilkins, Leonardo, Scaliger, Lana, Joseph Galien, Borelli, Cyrano de Bergerac, etc. Bourgeois also was the first to suggest "the use of an adjustable plane surface fitted beneath the balloon, whereby some measure of control might be obtained from the horizontal pressure of air on such plane during the rise or fall of the balloon" (Hodgson). He also includes a consideration of some of the problems of the new science of ballooning, including guidance, covering textiles, gas production, etc., and includes a plan for future balloon studies. American Revolution]: Ponce, Nicolas
Paris: M. Godefroy, 1784. Sixteen engraved plates: engraved titlepage with vignettes, twelve scenes, two maps, and a final plate celebrating the peace of 1783. Quarto. 19th-century red morocco, rebacked; spine gilt, gilt dentelles. Light foxing. Very good. A very nice collection of Revolutionary views, one of the few contemporary publications to illustrate scenes from the Revolution. The first leaf is an engraved title with explanatory text and vignettes of battles. The plates illustrate the tarring and feathering of a tax collector; the battle of Lexington; the surrender at Saratoga; the attack of French forces on the island of Dominica; the surrender of Senegal; the capture of Grenada; Galvez capturing Pensacola; the capture of Tobago; the surrender of Cornwallis; and three more scenes of fighting on Guadeloupe; with two sheets of maps, and a series of vignettes commemorating the Treaty of Versailles in 1783. Howes calls this the first French book to mention the United States on the titlepage. Scarce. HOWES C576, "aa." SABIN 68421. CRESSWELL 303-307, 333-342. OCLC 3944245. [Mauritius Imprint]
Isle de France: Imprimerie Royale, 1784. 4pp. on a single folded sheet. Quarto. Moderately worn with loss at foredge and gutter margins, not affecting text. Lightly soiled and dampstained. Good. An early and unrecorded imprint from the colonial press at the French colony of Mauritius, also known as the Ile de France. The text comprises a poem in eleven stanzas by an anonymous soldier from the Regiment of the Isle de France who retired to the island of Bourbon. As most early imprints from Mauritius are official documents, this piece, a work of local literature, is particularly interesting and desirable. The Dutch were the first Europeans to become interested in the island, taking possession in 1598. After exploiting the island's dense forests for a century and introducing the cultivation of sugar cane and cotton, in 1710 the Dutch abandoned the colony. The French soon claimed it as "Ile de France," and the island remained under the control of the French East India Company until 1767. During the long war between France and England at the beginning of the 19th century, Mauritius proved to be an important strategic naval base; as a result the British took charge of the island in 1810, and the Treaty of Paris confirmed official British possession in 1814. It remained an important sugar producing colony, and in the 20th century agricultural production was expanded to include tea, rice, and other produce. Printing began on Mauritius in 1768. During the French period, until 1810, only about 400 imprints were produced, mostly in the form of official documents and newspapers, … [Click Below for Full Description]

SADE Donatien Alphonse François, Marquis de
- s.n., s.l. s.d. [Click Below for Full Description]
