RARE 1784 Edith Newbold Commonplace Book (Philadelphia & New Jersey).Unpaginated leather book, completely handwritten. Housed in a custom clamshell box with leather label on spine. Front board is detached. Here's what I was able to research about the author: Edith Newbold was born on June 30, 1766 in Upper Springfield, Burlington, New Jersey Daughter of William (1736-1794) and Susannah (Stevenson) Newbold (1736-1803) Brother of Thomas Newbold (1760-1823) Married Joseph E. Laurie (October 28, 1789) Died April 16, 1842. Her brother, Thomas Newbold, was a member of the New Jersey General Assembly in 1797. He was in the New Jersey House of Representatives from 1807 to 1813 and again from 1820-1822. The book offered here is essentially a collection of writings gleaned mostly from books and newspapers at the time, including a number of poems. Some of the entries might possibly be original authored worked by Edith. Several Signatures on the front pastedown are dated 1784, but some appear to be earlier (1782) and some later (1786). A couple of entries are of specific note: One is on "The Black Rose," a Negro woman who died in Philadelphia in 1772. The other is "An Elegy to the Memory of the American Volunteers" who fell at Lexington in 1775. It's unlikely these were written in that time period, but were most likely copied down from older newspapers in the 1780s. There appear to be a few different handwriting styles which indicate the entries were done either by a couple of different people or were done at other times. Some of the entries have been done in especially careful and nea … [Click Below for Full Description]

Hutton, James
Edinburgh, 1784. Hutton, James (1726-97). The theory of rain. Offprint from the Transactions of the Royal Society of Edinburgh 1 (1788). 4to. 46pp. 255 x 198 mm. Quarter calf in antique style. First and last leaves coming loose, minor toning but very good. First Edition, Rare Offprint Issue, with only one copy (Am. Phil. Soc.) noted in OCLC. Hutton's paper represents an important step in our understanding of how the water-cycle operates in meteorology. Hutton hypothesized that rain was caused by a mixture of air currents of differing temperatures, either saturated or nearly saturated with moisture. "His Theory of Rain proposes the rule that 'the action and effect of heat and cold' lies at the base of all rainfall. As he says, he seeks to 'form a theory of rain upon that investigated rule, concerning the evaporation and condensation of water' . . . Backed with a considerable array of facts on humidity, temperature, wind currents, and precipitation, Hutton propounds that the amount of humidity in the atmosphere increases proportionally to an increase in the temperature; precipitation occurs where a colder air mass collides with a hotter air mass, thereby cooling it and forcing it to expel its moisture" (Farnsworth, p. 23). Hutton noted that mountain ranges can cause precipitation by raising and cooling warmer moisture-bearing air and claimed that rain could be predicted scientifically by carefully studying geographical features and wind currents. The journal printing of Hutton's paper appeared in the same volume of the Transactions as his famous "Theory of the earth" setti … [Click Below for Full Description]

Library label pasted on to pasted down front free end-paper. Library stamp to front free end-paper and front wrapper. A very fine an clean copy. 465-66. [Entire volume: VIII, 664 pp.]. ¶ First printings of these two landmark papers which together embrace the entire history of Black Hole-Sciences: Michell's groundbreaking letter to Cavendish in which he put forth the highly controversial and foresighted idea of a body so massive that even light could not escape it, thereby introducing for the very first time the concept of a Black Hole, together with Hawing and Gibbons' final confirmation and very first observational evidence for the existence of black holes published 187 years later. John Mitchell's idea of black holes in 1783 were to a large extent ignored and the concept sank into complete obscurity and was not rediscovered until the 1970ies when Stephen Hawking turned it into one of the most popular and researched areas of physics and cosmology. Despite the fact that: "Michell earned a permanent place in the history of stellar astronomy for two signal accomplishments: he was the first to make a realistic estimate of the distance to the stars, and he discovered the existence of physical double stars … [Click Below for Full Description]

Iselin, Isaak].
Karlsruhe, Christian Gottlieb Schmieder, 1784. 8vo. 2 vols. (III)-XVI, 288 pp. (2), 369, (3) p., wanting half-titles. With folding table at end of vol. 1. Contemporary half calf over sprinkled boards, spines gilt with label. Second edition of the author's exposition of physiocratic doctrines, first published in 1776. Iselin (1728-82) was not converted to the ideas of Quesnay before 1772, and the present work was the first in which his new position was given full expression. According to Iselin, human institutions have corrupted the natural order of things, and in this book he develops a new constitution aiming at to reconcile the republicanism of his Swiss fatherland with the enlightened despotism of Quesnay. Iselin was also the editor of the German economic journal "Ephemeriden der Menschheit", which soon gained a great reputation and counted among its contributors many of the most eminent German economists. - Handwritten inscription, dated 1793, to flyleaves. Necker, Jacques.
No place or publisher, 1784. Large 8vo. 3 vols. VII, (1), CLIX, (1), 352 pp. VII, (1), 536 pp. VIII, 468 pp. With folding table in vol. 1. Contemporary grey wrappers with handwritten titles to spine. First edition, likely first issue. The only authentic account of the finances of France previous to the Revolution. This was undoubtedly Necker's most successful book: it saw some 20 editions (or issues) within a few years, including translations into English, German and other languages. It is said to have sold 80,000 copies, though McCulloch's statement that this occurred "in the course of a few days" would seem exaggerated. Carpenter distinguishes seven issues all dated "1784" and, according to him, all printed from the same type setting, but differing in pagination as well as in location and number of errata. The present issue fully agrees the description of his first item (with respectively 12, 10 and 8 errata on the last preliminary page of each volume), but it does not show the misnumbering of page VIII of the third volume. The second volume includes the Supplement (pp. 533-536) referring to the edict of August 1784 which "appeared since the printing of the previous chapters". - Entirely untrimmed copy measuring ca. 14 x 21,8 cm. In fine general condition. *Einaudi A582. Kress B.752-756. Carpenter XXIX,1. Coquelin & Guillaumin II, 272. McCulloch p. 347. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

William Crouch
This document lists the amount of hay ordered and actually delivered, as well as price, and is written out and signed by Lear Tobias Lear began his career by being an apprentice until his uncle, Benjamin Lincoln, recommended him for the job of tutoring Martha Washington's grandchildren and to the post of George Washington's personal secretary, both to which he was hired in 1784. He was integrated into Washington's house and his post quickly evolved beyond clerk to being Washington's right-hand man, doing whatever Washington needed, such as tutoring, filling out expense reports, and writing letters. William Crouch had a farm and supplied hay and straw to, among others, Robert Morris in Philadelphia. He did so for President George Washington, who, during his Presidency in Philadelphia, maintained a Presidential stable and required it to be stocked. Autograph document signed, by Tobias Lear in the 3rd person, also signed by William Crouch, October 10, 1792. “Received October 10, 1792 of Tobias Lear Sixty pounds in full for ten tons of Hay which is to be delivered at the stable of the President of the US as it may be wanted, said T. Lear giving the subscriber two or three days notice previous to his deliveries each load or loads as may be requested. And the weighing of the said hay to be settled by T. Lear after the same shall have been delivered.” The manuscript then goes on to list the actual dates and amounts of hay delivered to Washington. The verso lists the revised amount paid. This document was last sold in 1951 by Walter Benjamin.

Edward Carrington James Monroe
A letter from Edward Carrington to Monroe, docketed by the future President, showing the link between Jewish businessmen and our founders Jacob Mordecai, born in Philadelphia, was the son of Moses and Elizabeth Whitlock Mordecai. He served as a clerk under Col. David Franks during the Revolution; afterwards he resided for a while in New York, where in 1784 he formed a partnership with Haym Salomon. They maintained an auction house at the corner of Wall and Pearl streets. Mordecai carried on the business at 22 Wall Street after Salomon’s death in 1785, until Mordecai himself went bankrupt in the winter of 1786. James Monroe wrote a promissory note that said his uncle Joseph Jones would pay the amount of the note ($530). Alexander Hamilton signed the note as security. Monroe then gave the note to Mordecai to convert to cash. When Mordecai went bankrupt and was unable to pay the full amount of the note, Monroe was left in an uncomfortable position. In February, Monroe wrote to James Madison. “The day before I left New York I experienc’d an unfortunate disaster, particularly upon that occasion. I had drawn a bill on mr. Jones endors’d by Colo. Hamilton for 530. dolrs. & committed it to a broker mr. Mordicai to negotiate for me. He was to have furnish’d the money the day appointed for me to leave the city. On that day he fail’d, having previously recd. & dispos’d of my money. He advanc’d me 90£ however of that currency & assur’d me he wod. certainly indemnify me altogether. Elkanah ben Yeruham ben Avigdor.
Korets (Ukraine), in der prawlgirte Drukrei fun den Hern Johan Anton Krigr (Johann Anton Krieger) in Warsoi, 544 [1784]. Folio (210 x 352 mm). (1), 111, (1) ff. With architectural woodcut title border and a few diagrams within the text. Contemporary calf. An edition of two remarkable 15th century kabbalistic treatises, the "Kanah" and "Peliah", of which the latter is here printed for the first time. Contains observations on the account of the creation in Genesis and on the Decalogue. Seemingly launching kabbalistic theory against the Bible and the Talmud, the author (whose name is allegorical, but who likely flourished in Spain) in fact seeks to base on firmer ground the scripture he purports to criticize (cf. Graetz VIII, 449ff.). The chief role in this work is played by a prodigy called Nahum, who at the age of three, together with his father, was taught the Kabbala by his grandfather, the latter receiving the assistance and cooperation of the prophet Elijah and various heavenly voices. For the role of the versatile printer J. A. Kriger in producing books on his various presses for the growing number of Polish Jews eager for printed matter, cf. E. Ringelblum, "Johann Anton Krieger, printer of Jewish books", in: Polin 12 (1999), pp. 198-211. - Binding rubbed and bumped at extremeties with severe defects to spine and corners; interior browned, waterstained, and wormed, edges and corners damaged, but complete.

[Click Below for Full Description]

COOK, James and Henry Roberts
London: G. Nicol and T. Cadell, No Date [1784]. Area of exposed chart, shown within mat, measures 37.5" x 24". Reveals the routes of Cook's three voyages, starting with the Endeavour (1768-71), followed by the two voyages of the Resolution (1772-75 and 1776-80) with notes along the tracks ("Seagull Seen Here.") The West Coast of America is nearly barren, revealing only Monterey (location of Spanish mission) and Nootka Sound, where Cook noted in his journal that Chief Maquinna was wearing as a necklace a spoon of Spanish origin. Robert's began this chart under Cook's behest; after Cook's death in the Sandwich Islands, the Admiralty ensured Cook's work would be ecnompassed and memorialized with this chart. It was used in the official account of the third voyage, 1784.When published, the most complete knowledge of world cartography. Captain James Cook's supreme achievement, in which during three voyages details of the Pacific Ocean became known to the world when published, posthumously, after the third voyage returned to England. The magnitude of Cook's discoveries are charted here, laying the groundwork for future non-native settlement in Australia, New Zealand, Hawaii, the Northwest Coast, etc. Indeed, his discovery of otter pelts, loaded at Nootka Sound and traded in Canton, can be viewed as the harbinger of trade between North America and China. In the "Bibliography of Captain James Cook R.N., F.R.S., Circumnavigator" edited by M. K. Beddie and published by The Library of New South Wales (Second Edition, 1970), the plate is listed on page 330 as published in "A Voyage to t … [Click Below for Full Description]
