ALEXANDER HAMILTON
New York, 1784. No binding. Fine. Letter Signed in full ""Alexander Hamilton,"" to John Chaloner, New York, August 14, 1784. Sent copy (The Hamilton Papers at the Library of Congress has Hamilton's retained draft). 2 pp., 8x 13 in. Just months after founding the Bank of New York, Hamilton writes to Philadelphia merchant John Chaloner regarding financial transactions including the purchase by John Church of 25 shares of Bank stock. Hamilton also checks on a package sent to Hamilton's wife Elizabeth from her sister Angelica Church, then in Paris. Historical BackgroundElizabeth Schuyler Hamilton's older sister Angelica married John Barker Church, an English businessman, in 1777. Church supported the American Revolution and made a fortune supplying the American and French armies with provisions. After the war, he served as a U.S. envoy to the French government from 1783 to 1785. Angelica Church apparently was shopping in Paris, and bought a box of sheeting for her sister and another item for their mother, Catherine Van Rensselaer Schuyler. After a brief return to America, the Church family left for England, where John B. Church served in Parliament from 1790 to 1796. During Church's absence from 1783 to 1797, Hamilton managed his financial affairs, with Chaloner conducting his business in Philadelphia.Hamilton discusses various obligations to his Church, including accounts with Philadelphia merchants James and Alexander Stewart, New York broker John Delafield, New York merchant and Bank of New York stockholder James Buchanan, Philadelphia Captain George Geddis, and New York st … [Click Below for Full Description]

Trenck, Friedrich Frhr v. d.).
Berlin und Leipzig 1784. Erste Ausgabe. [Click Below for Full Description]

BENINCASA RUTILIO
In Venezia, presso Leonardo e Giammaria fratelli Bassaglia, 1784. Cm. 17, pp. xxiv, 696.
Paris: Chez Cuchet, 1784. Two volumes. xxiv,[iv],422,[2]; [4],iv,400,[2]pp. Half title in second volume. Bound in matching contemporary mottled calf, spines richly gilt. Boards and outer joints with instances of moderate wear. Occasional minor foxing, light dampstaining in upper corner of final 60 pages of second volume. A very good set. The first French edition, first issue, following the first London printing of 1782. This first issue contains errata leaves not found in the second issue, and is printed on different paper and contains different ornaments on the titlepage and chapter heads. The pagination of the second volume also differs from that of the second issue. When creating this French edition, Crèvecoeur did not merely translate the London edition; he substantially rewrote it, adding a second volume, and changing the identity of the narrator from the farmer, "James," to a person more readily identifiable as Crèvecoeur himself. It is also more pro-American and anti-British in tone than is the London printing. Crèvecoeur came to America during the French and Indian War and served with the French forces. Afterwards he settled in the British colonies, becoming a farmer. This work, which describes his experiences in America, is justly famous for its vivid picture of a colonial world slipping into the chaos of war, revolution, and nationhood. Two of the essays, "What is an American?" and "Distresses of a Frontier Man," particularly address the confusion of the times. Crèvecoeur gives a negative assessment of slavery in his section on South Carolina, and one … [Click Below for Full Description]

ALEXANDER HAMILTON
1784. No binding. Fine. Autograph Document, 4 1/2 pages (8 x 13 in.) hinged together, Supreme Court [New York], n.d. [ca. December 1784], being a special verdict of the case of James Leonard/James Jackson v. Anthony Post When the British occupied New York City in 1776, they confiscated the estates of patriots who had fled and placed them under the management of the Barrack Master General. Likewise, many American states passed laws allowing the seizure of loyalists' property; these co-called ""confiscation laws"" effectively criminalized war dissent. New York's most aggressive confiscation (or forfeiture) law, titled ""An Act for the Forfeiture and Sale of the Estates of Persons who have adhered to the Enemies of this State, and for declaring the Sovereignty of the People of this State, in respect to all Property within the same,"" was passed on October 22, 1779 (New York Laws, 3rd session, Ch. 25). New Yorkers who were convicted of adhering to the British side (for instance, by voluntarily moving into areas occupied by the British or remaining behind enemy lines after obtaining a pass) forfeited their real and personal property and were banished from the state, which in turn was empowered to seize and sell the forfeited property.[1]While this law could not be enforced while the British occupied the city, that didn't stop litigation. On May 5, 1780 an Ulster County, New York jury indicted James Leonard under the Confiscation Act. Following Leonard's failure to appear to contest the indictment, judgment was entered against him and his property was forfeited. The judgment ro … [Click Below for Full Description]

A few months before their arrival a Muslim uprising had taken place in Gansu and the authorities assumed that the missionaries had come to support the Muslim rebels. After troublesome interrogations the missionaries were expelled from China (Biagini had died in prison in 1785) and arrived at the Philippines in 1786.Pasted bookplate on title-page.
