Sauveur Lusignan
James Phillips, George Yard, London, 1784. When ordering from the US, parcels may be subject to import tax and duty charges, which the buyer is responsible to pay. A History of the Revolt of Ali Bey, against the Ottoman Porte: including an account of the form of government of Egypt; together with a description of Grand Cairo, and of several places in Egypt, Palestine, and Syria: to which are added, a short account of the present state of the Christians who are subjects to the Turkish government, and the journal of a gentleman who travelled from Aleppo to Bassora by Sauveur Lusignan. Published by London: James Phillips. MDCCLXXXIV = 1784, second edition with a large fold-out map. 259 pages. An important account of the revolt of 'Ali Bey, the shaykh al-balad of Egypt who declared the country independent of the Ottoman Empire before proceeding to seize control of the Hijaz and invade Syria. His rule ended following the insubordination of his most trusted general, Abu al-Dhahab, which led to Ali Bey's exile then death outside the walls of Cairo. "Very little is known of Sauveur Lusignan, who claims to have known Ali Bey personally. He seems to have been a Greek or more probably a Cypriot who took refuge in London; he advertises himself as a teacher of ancient and modern Greek (on A5v), but there is no mention of him in Legrand. Perhaps he is connected with the Giacomo Lusignan who later acted as a factotum for the Earl of Guildford" - (Blackmer). RARE 1784 Edith Newbold Commonplace Book (Philadelphia & New Jersey).Unpaginated leather book, completely handwritten. Housed in a custom clamshell box with leather label on spine. Front board is detached. Here's what I was able to research about the author: Edith Newbold was born on June 30, 1766 in Upper Springfield, Burlington, New Jersey Daughter of William (1736-1794) and Susannah (Stevenson) Newbold (1736-1803) Brother of Thomas Newbold (1760-1823) Married Joseph E. Laurie (October 28, 1789) Died April 16, 1842. Her brother, Thomas Newbold, was a member of the New Jersey General Assembly in 1797. He was in the New Jersey House of Representatives from 1807 to 1813 and again from 1820-1822. The book offered here is essentially a collection of writings gleaned mostly from books and newspapers at the time, including a number of poems. Some of the entries might possibly be original authored worked by Edith. Several Signatures on the front pastedown are dated 1784, but some appear to be earlier (1782) and some later (1786). A couple of entries are of specific note: One is on "The Black Rose," a Negro woman who died in Philadelphia in 1772. The other is "An Elegy to the Memory of the American Volunteers" who fell at Lexington in 1775. It's unlikely these were written in that time period, but were most likely copied down from older newspapers in the 1780s. There appear to be a few different handwriting styles which indicate the entries were done either by a couple of different people or were done at other times. Some of the entries have been done in especially careful and nea … [Click Below for Full Description]

DECREMPS, Henri.
Cf. Caillet 2861-2864 (first eds); Hall, Old Conjuring Books, pp. 156-158, 174; Christopher, Magic: a picture history, pp. 28-31. Rare complete set (second edition?) of Decremps's popular work on conjuring and physics tricks, first published in 1784. Henri Decremps (1746-1826), a Parisian lawyer and amateur conjuror, sought to unmask Giovanni Giuseppe Pinetti, the most celebrated magician of the 18th century. Pinetti had gained fame as a flamboyant performer, but Decremps considered him a charlatan who cheated people for personal profit. In the first volume Decremps unveils several of his most famous tricks, including one named "Theophrastus Paracelsus", involving a pigeon supposedly being beheaded, a mechanical singing bird, an automaton chess-player and a dancing egg that jumps out of a hat. The frontispiece in vol. 1 shows the magician throwing a deck of cards in the air and nailing shooting a card with a pistol. As a reaction to Decremps's attack Pinetti published his own instruction book, Physical amusements, and prepared a new show. Decremps then published a supplement revealing Pinnetti's latest tricks, followed by three subsequent volumes almost entirely devoted to physics tricks: Testament de Jérome Sharp, Les petites aventures de Jérome Sharp and finally Codicile de Jérome Sharp. Decremps's work proved very popular: it was reprinted and translated numerous of times. Sets comprising all five volumes are rare.In very good condition. A rare complete set of an important conjuring book, in lovely uniform near contemporary bindings.

LUPO Mario - RONCHETTI Giuseppe.
ex typographia Vincentii Antoine. 2 gr. voll. in folio (mm. 435x275), pp. XXXII, (2), 368 col., (4), 1096 col.
Four parts bound in two volumes. [4], 199; [4], 188; [4] 175; [4], 208 pages. Re-backed sometimes over earlier boards; red and black labels. Bindings : 14 x 9.2 cm. Piece cut from the front endpaper and the half title of Part one, also the half-title of part three, presumably to remove an ownership name; inner joints repaired when re-backed; both volumes lack one of two rear endpapers; some very occasional minor spotting; else a very good set. Anthony Blunt's copy with his characteristic pencilled name, 'A.F. Blunt' on the front endpaper of the first volume. This would appear to be the third edition of this famous epistolatory novel, first published in 1782. The majority of Anthony Blunt's library, some 700 antiquarian titles, was acquired by the Courtauld Institute. Many of the copies in the collection bear the same pencilled ownership name. Blunt, born in 1907, joined the British Army at the start of the Second World War and in 1940 was recruited by MI5. After the War, King George VI appointed Blunt Surveyor of the King's Art. He also became director of the Courtauld Institute of Art. His elevated position in society remained throughout the 1950's and into the early 1960's. But this all changed in 1964 when MI5 charged him with being the fourth man in a quartet of Soviet spies known as the 'Cambridge Four.' When assured he would have immunity from prosecution, Blunt confessed. He died in 1963 a recluse.

San MASSIMO
San MASSIMO - SANCTI MAXIMI Episcopi Taurinensis OPERA Iussu PII SEXTI P.M. aucta, atque adnotationibus illustrata et VICTORIO AMEDEO Sardiniae Regi D D - 1784. Roma Romae, Typis Sac. Congr. [Click Below for Full Description]

ALEXANDER HAMILTON
Autograph Document, 4 1/2 pages (8 x 13 in.) hinged together, Supreme Court [New York], n.d. [ca. December 1784], being a special verdict of the case of James Leonard/James Jackson v. Anthony Post When the British occupied New York City in 1776, they confiscated the estates of patriots who had fled and placed them under the management of the Barrack Master General. Likewise, many American states passed laws allowing the seizure of loyalists' property; these co-called "confiscation laws" effectively criminalized war dissent. New York's most aggressive confiscation (or forfeiture) law, titled "An Act for the Forfeiture and Sale of the Estates of Persons who have adhered to the Enemies of this State, and for declaring the Sovereignty of the People of this State, in respect to all Property within the same," was passed on October 22, 1779 (New York Laws, 3rd session, Ch. 25). New Yorkers who were convicted of adhering to the British side (for instance, by voluntarily moving into areas occupied by the British or remaining behind enemy lines after obtaining a pass) forfeited their real and personal property and were banished from the state, which in turn was empowered to seize and sell the forfeited property.[1]While this law could not be enforced while the British occupied the city, that didn't stop litigation. On May 5, 1780 an Ulster County, New York jury indicted James Leonard under the Confiscation Act. Following Leonard's failure to appear to contest the indictment, judgment was entered against him and his property was forfeited. The judgment roll was signed on November 9, 1 … [Click Below for Full Description]

Segnatura: A-E4; F2. Dedicatoria a stampa alla Signora Domenica Vernazza duchessa di Castrì nata Levanto, de' patrizi genovesi. Esemplare in barbe conservato in brossura remondiniana coeva. Lievi fioriture.
