[Click Below for Full Description]

Amsterdam, 1784. WEBBER, John (after); BARTOLOZZI, Francesco (engraver) & BYRNE, William (engraver).
London, 1784. Oval engraving, 395 x 270mm (plate size), 538 x 374mm (sheet size), 10mm closed tear repaired to upper margin, otherwise particularly fine. Rare oval variant of the well-known Bartolozzi engraving of Cook's death. Webber completed his oil painting of the scene soon after returning to London in 1780, and the print was first issued some four years later, with Bartolozzi taking responsibility for the figures, and Byrne the landscape. Joppien and Smith argue that in the original image Cook is shown as 'an innocent victim, killed in the act of pleading for peace'. This oval version of the scene focuses the attention entirely on Cook as he is surrounded by hostile Hawai'ians. Nothing can be seen of the British marines to whom Cook stretches out his arm - he stands alone, soon to fall at the hands of the angry warriors. Not in Beddie; cf. Joppien & Smith, 3.305A.

WEBBER, John; THORNTON, John (engraver).
London Alex. Hogg at the Kings Arms No 16 Paternoster Row, 1784. Engraving, 252 x 390mm (cut to plate mark), mounted. A particularly fine copy of Webber's view of one of the carefully tended ceremonial burial grounds on the island of Tongatapu, the main island of Tonga. The view is particularly picturesque, clearly designed to appeal to the European eye, with finely detailed trees surrounding an open space with traditional buildings on the edge, and a stream flowing through the centre. Cook returned to Tongatapu on his Third Voyage anchoring there from 10th June to 10th July 1777. He recorded visiting a fa'itoka (burying ground) in his journal: 'The Places set apart for burying the dead are raised with Gravel about a foot or two above the level of the Ground, on which stand two or three Houses which are constantly shut up but contain nothing in them; these Ceremonies called in their Language Dano are kept very neat & clean & the Indians are generally despleased at our approaching them' (Cook Journals III, 2, 1037). The image originally appeared in the official account of Cook's Third Voyage, but this version of the print was issued in George William Anderson's A New Authentic and Complete Collection of Voyages around the World published by Hogg in 1784. cf. Beddie, 17 & 1743 [21]. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

[Chardon, Daniel Marc Antoine]
Paris: 1784. [4], xxxv, xxvii, 610, [2]; [2], 611-1230, xlii pp. 2 vols. 4to. Important Work on the Laws Governing Privateers. An important work on French privateering law, listing the laws chronologically from 1400 to 1784. This work was compiled by Daniel Marc Antoine Chardon, who served as intendant of St. Lucia (1763), intendant of Corsica, as well as several other posts in the French government. Corsaires were licensed by the government to conduct raids on the ships of nations with whom France was at war. Prizes taken were auctioned and a percentage of the proceeds was given to the captain. There are many references to dealings with North American colonies and the fledgling United States as well as the wider remit of French ships. The work was published at the beginning of the era of grand voyages and French interest in the Pacific. There is a reference to the "Ordres donnes en 1779, a tous les Capitaines de Corsairs & autres, de traiter le Capitaine Cook, de meme que s'il commandoit des Batimens Neutrals ou Amis." American Book Prices Current finds no copies for sale at auction in the last thirty years. A scarce and important compendium from the Copley library, with James Copley's bookplate. Barbier I:625; Kress, 12796; Polak, 1808. Contemporary patterned calf, spines gilt with leather labels, all edges stained red. Slight rubbing and wear, bookplate on front pastedowns, but very clean internally, with only occasional foxing or soiling, a near fine set.

Henry Fielding
W. Stragan et al, 1784. A New Edition. With an essay on the life and genius of the author, and to which is now added, The Fathers; or, The Good-natured Man. With a portrait plate, frontispieces to each volume, and one additional plate in volume VI. With armorial bookplates of Capt. John Lornel to two front pastedowns. Complete in ten volumes. Henry Fielding (Sharpham, 22 April 1707 - near Lisbon, 8 October 1754) was an English novelist and dramatist known for his rich earthy humour and satirical prowess, and as the author of the novel Tom Jones. Aside from his literary achievements, he has a significant place in the history of law-enforcement, having founded (with his half-brother John) what some have called London's first police force, the Bow Street Runners, using his authority as a magistrate. Fielding never stopped writing political satire and satires of current arts and letters. His Tragedy of Tragedies of Tom Thumb (for which Hogarth designed the frontispiece) was, for example, quite successful as a printed play. He also contributed a number of works to journals of the day. He wrote for Tory periodicals, usually under the name of "Captain Hercules Vinegar". During the late 1730s and early 1740s Fielding continued to air his liberal and anti-Jacobite views in satirical articles and newspapers. CONDITION Rebacked in calf with original boards. Externally sound, smart spines, rubbing and wear to the older leather. Internally, firmly bound. Remarkably bright for their age, but with light scattered spotting. Overall Condition: Very Good.
