Osgood, Joseph
Andover, Massachusetts. Very Good. Contemporary calf with hand sewn binding. Binding has heavy scratching and moderate wear to edges, some signatures are loosening and leaves are browned, but overall in very good condition. Around 100 leaves, written on both sides. A fine, closely written day book of the early and very busy Massachusetts physician, Joseph Osgood. Unlike many doctors of today, his entries are written in a relatively clear hand, and can be easily read. Entries in the day book include the name of the patient and head of family, the medication administered, the amount charged in pounds and shillings and payments received. There were many recognizable remedies administered including cream of tartar, gum arabic, camphor, valerian, myrrh, opium, paregoric, Carolina pink root and other herbals. Examples of entries include: "Nov'b 1, 1784. Mr. Asa Morse of Methuen. To visit to your wife and del'd of a son. To elix camphor, myrrh + elix paregoric" and from the same day "Mr. Asa Parker. To visit son Moses. To blooding in cubito." Joseph Osgood (1718 - 1797) was from a prominent family which included military officers and elected officials. Joseph was the son of Deacon John Osgood and Hannah Abbott. Educated at Harvard, he was first located in Boston, but moved to Andover to escape an outbreak of smallpox. Pursuing mercantile and pharmaceutical sales, he was often called upon to prescribe and became a respected physician. Joseph Osgood had two sons, Joseph Jr. And George, both physicians. This fascinating day book preserves a wealth of medical hist … [Click Below for Full Description]

I will include a few clippings he kept from his beginnings in travel that were in the house in Mexico where the book was discovered in a safe. People are selling the plates for quite a bit, but I would like to think someone would keep the book whole as it tells a story of life at sea back in the day. The text is fascinating but you have to get over the letter s looking like an f. It also includes voyages by Capt. Samual Wallis, Admiral Byron and Lord Mulgrave. Ferris, F. Lucci
Apud Van Duren, 1784. The complete title is "Prompta Bibliotheca canonica, juridica, moralis, theologica, necnon ascetica, polemica, rubricistica, historica", an 8-volume encyclopedia of religious knowledge. The first edition of this work appeared at Bologna, in 1746. A second edition, much enlarged, also a third, were published by the author himself. The fourth edition, dating from 1763 seems to have been published after his death. This edition, 20 years later, contains the additions which the author had made to the second edition and also other enlargements (additiones ex aliena manu) inserted in their respective places in the body of the work (and no longer in the appendix as in the former editions) and supplements. Ferrari was an eighteenth-century canonist of the Franciscan Order. The exact dates of his birth and death are unknown, but he was born at Solero, near Alessandria in Northern Italy. He was also professor, provincial of his order, and consultor of the Holy Office. 8 volume set, each comprising approximately 700 pages. Good condition. Interior is very good-near fine: clean and tight with very little foxing. It was rebound, from appearances sometime in the late 19th century and the bindings show heavy edge wear and cracked spines. Marbled boards with cloth spines, to which the original ribbed-leather spines have been affixed. The book has recently been reprinted, but vintage volumes such as this are quite rare -- and complete sets especially so.

Abbe de Mably
J. Debrett, London, 1784. [4], 280pp. Hardcover in marbled leather boards with leather spine and gilt title. Previous owner bookplate on front pastedown. First English edition. Mably's work consists of four letters written to John Adams, then the American Minister to Holland, on the government, laws, and political divisions in the United States. The French took great interest in the form that the American government would take after the Revolution, publishing the constitutions of the thirteen states in 1783, and pondering the question of a strong central government, or a loose confederation. "Mably comments on the American approach to government as reflected in the constitutions of the thirteen states, and, more specifically, in those of Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, and Georgia.he offers advice on a national constitution, urging a loose federation rather than a strong central government and warning against excessive democracy" - Cohen. Another Dublin edition appeared in 1785, in French, predating the present translated edition, though Echeverria & Wilkie deem this a false imprint due to typographical inconsistencies in the dedication. SABIN 42925. HOWES M5 (ref). COHEN 2763. ECHEVERRIA & WILKIE 784/71. I've done my best to describe the book, but if you have additional questions, please don't hesitate to send me an e-mail. HAÜY, l'Abbé [René Just].
FIRST EDITION of the book which "laid the foundation of the mathematical theory of crystal structure" (DSB, VI, p. 178). It was due to this work that Haüy was able to properly classify minerals. Haüy held that the characteristic form of the constituent molecule of a compound is due to the forms, the definite proportions, and the definite arrangement of the constituent elementary particles. That is, before Proust, Haüy proposed a priori the chemical law of fixed proportions. These concepts enabled Haüy to unite in one species minerals hitherto considered different, such as beryl and emerald, and to divide groups that had been considered varieties of the same species, such as zeolites.Dibner, Heralds of Science 92. FRANCESCO SANTINI, A SANTA GIUSTINA A VENEZIA; PAOLO REMONDINI, 1784. Bella vergata veneziana. Filigrana FV sormontate da tre stelle. Foglio a larghi margini in bellissima carta veneziana. Titolo entro ricco cartiglio in alto a destra. Robert (Jean) Janvier: working in Paris in the second half of the eighteenth century, Jean Janvier (1746 - 1776) produced a series of maps in the later half of the century. While there is some confusion about his Christian name, his maps usually were inscribed "Le Sieur Janvier". He is best known for his collaboration with engraver Jean Lattre for an Atlas Moderne first released in 1762 and in several later editions some by C. F. Delamarche and by Chez Remondini. He also produced several maps used in general atlases by William Fadan and P. Santini.

Impériale, 1812, in 8°, de VIII-303pp pleine basane , dos lisse orné.
