        Voyage De Figaro En Espagne

Currente Rota, A Saint-malo 1784 Haldleder/hartkarton Tadellos ERSTAUSGABE, ORIGINALAUSGABE! Text Französisch. Ursprünglich als Interim-Broschur erschienen. Noch mit Hinweisblatt für den Buchbinder! Von unserer Buchbinderin fachmännisch und liebevoll gebunden. Marmorierter-/pappbezogener Einband, abgerundete Lederecken, Lederrücken, montiertes goldgeprägtes Titelschildchen, 5 Bünde, tadellos. Titelblatt mit Vignette, XVI, 286 paginierte Seiten. Sehr erträglicher (ehemaliger) Wasserschaden am oberen/unteren Blatt-Rand. Angenehme Typographie. Insgesamt sehr gut erhalten. +++ 9,5 x 16,4 cm, 0,2 kg. +++ Stichwörter: Rarität Rara Spanien Polemik Kulturgeschichte Versand D: 5,50 EUR

A BRIEF VIEW OF THE ACCOUNTS OF THE TREASURY OF PENNSYLVANIA, FROM THE TIME OF THE COMMENCEMENT OF THE REVOLUTION TO THE FIRST OF OCTOBER, 1781...

Philadelphia: Hall and Sellers, 1784. 237pp. Later half calf and patterned boards. Titlepage tanned, with several contemporary ownership inscriptions and notations. Some light tanning, but overall internally clean. Last six pages bound in upside down and backwards. Contemporary ownership inscriptions on verso of p.237. A good copy. A printed account of the Pennsylvania Treasury during the Revolutionary period. The text is printed in chart form throughout, with a tally of expenses at the bottom of each page. A fascinating document. The first treasurer of the State was Michael Hillegas, who was in the role in the provincial government but who turned over the job to the polymath David Rittenhouse by August 1776. Most of the text covers in detail Rittenhouse's tenure, until the spring of 1782, mostly concerned with expenditures relating to the war effort. During this time he also personally supervised the production of war material such as the casting of cannon. NAIP locates eleven copies. A key work for the finances of the Revolution. EVANS 18679. HILDEBURN 4438. SABIN 59927. NAIP w021209. ANB 18, pp.553-55.

An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations

London: for W. Strahan; and T. Cadell,, 1784. The third edition, with additions, in three volumes. 3 volumes, octavo (209 × 125 mm). Contemporary speckled sheep, gilt ruled and numbered spines, red morocco labels. Joints, extremities of spines and corners professionally refurbished, small area of worming to title and first leaf of Contents in volume II, general foxing. An attractive set in a contemporary binding. First octavo edition, third overall, of the "first and greatest classic of modern economic thought" (PMM). This uncommon edition contains several additions including a new chapter titled "The Conclusion of the Mercantile System". Adam Smith's masterpiece, first published in 1776, is the foundation of modern economic thought and remains the single most important account of the rise of, and the principles behind, modern capitalism. "The Wealth of Nations had no rival in scope or depth when published and is still one of the few works in its field to have achieved classic status, meaning simply that it has sustained yet survived repeated reading, critical and adulatory, long after the circumstances which prompted it have become the object of historical enquiry" (ODNB). This copy has an appealing Philadelphia provenance: each volume carries the engraved armorial bookplate of Charles Chauncey, ownership inscriptions on each title page: "From Charles Chauncey to Elihu Chauncey" (dated 1811) and "Charles Chauncey Savage 1877". Charles and Elihu would appear to be popular names in the Chauncey family but this pair are the brothers of Nathaniel Chauncey (1789-1865) who briefly practised law in Philadelphia. Elihu (d. 1843) is best remembered for being the first President of the Philadelphia and Reading Railroad, one of the first railroads constructed in the United States. He has been described as "a man of national importance. He became a complete master of political economy, and was, in that science, one of the most accomplished men the country produced. He was active in public affairs, especially in the financial policy of the Government, and by reason of his rare ability, his opinions were sought whenever loans were to be floated by municipal, state or federal authorities" (John Frederick Lewis, The History of an Old Philadelphia Land Title, Philadelphia, 1934).

Paris Imprimerie Royale 1784 - (26,5 x 20,5 cm). (2) 66 S. Moderner Pappband im Stil der Zeit. Erste Ausgabe. "This is the offical edition, printed at the King's private press in the Louvre" (D/K). - "In the spring of 1784 the King of France appointed this commission made up of members of the Academy of Sciences to investigate the claims of animal magnetism. He chose some of the most eminent men of science of his day. The chairman was Benjamin Franklin, a founding father of the United States of America, ambassador of that country to France, and a person highly knowledgeable in electricity and terrestrial magnetism. The commission's president was Antoine Laurent Lavoisier, a follower of Condillac and one of the most important chemists of the age. The secretary of the commission and editor of its report was the famous astronomer Jean Sylvain Bailly. The commission also included the director of the Academy of Sciences, Jean Baptiste Leroy, an investigator of electricity of some note. The commission began its investigations on March 12, 1784, and published its report in August of that year. Both this commission and one made up of members of the Faculty of Medicine of Paris, appointed by the King at the same time, investigated animal magnetism as practiced by Charles D'Eslon, a disciple of Mesmer. D'Eslon wanted this official inquiry, while Mesmer strongly opposed it. By cooperating with the commissions, D'Eslon effectively removed himself from his teacher's fold. Although D'Eslon's theory of animal magnetism, as presented to the commission, was somewhat different from that of Mesmer, the commissioners did not seem to be bothered by that fact. They contended that theory made no difference to their mandate, which was to decide about the existence and utility of animal magnetism. Their conclusion was that they found no evidence for the existence of an animal magnetic fluid. They ascribed any cures or improvement of health that might occur through the application of animal magnetism to the action of 'imagination.' The report was very influential and became a center of a vigorous controversy which raged for a number of years, with pamphlets and books being written for and against its conclusions" (Crabtree). - Erstes und letztes Blatt etwas angestaubt, sonst sehr sauberes und breitrandiges Exemplar. - Crabtree 31; Duveen & Klickstein 223 [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

- Vereinzelt minimal stockfleckig, sonst wohlerhalten. - Duveen/Klickstein 58 [Attributes: First Edition]

For more info about this item, see our RARE FISH BOOKS site.

      - Berlin chez l¿Auteur & chez Francois de la Garde, dedication by the author to the Queen of France (1784), première partie: (1785), seconde partie (1785), troisième partie (1786) et puis Berlin, Paris et Londres, chez l¿Auteur & chez de la Garde, chez Didot et chez White, quatrième partie (1787), cinquième partie (1787), sixième et dernière partie (1788). With six engraved title-vignettes and 216 hand-coloured copper engraved plates by Berger, Bodenehr, Darchow, Haas, Henning, Schmidt and other artists. Parts 1-6 of 12 in 3 volumes. Large folio (mm 460x270). Pp. [16], 206, [2]; [4], 170, [2]; [4], 160, [2]; [4], 134, [2]; [4], 130, [2]; [4], VIII, 150, [2]. Contemporary red morocco, covers gilt-ruled with decorative corner-pieces, floral gilt devices at spine, titles on green morocco labels, gilt edges. A very fine and complete copy of the rare first issue (1785-1788) of the first French folio edition, published almost contemporaneously with the first German edition. A mini format of Bloch's French folio edition was published a few years later. Marcus Elieser Bloch was a surgeon in Berlin. It was not until 1780 that he began to work with fishes from Germany and abroad. The present publication (1784-1788), resulting from many observations by himself and illustrated under his supervision, contains good descriptions and faithful water-colours. The species the author collected either in dried or preservative state are often well drawn and well described, except for the colours which change after death of the fish. Bloch had very little knowledge of foreign marine species like Mediteranean fishes which is not surprising for a scientist who lived in an unfavorable land-locked area. Some illustrations of Mediteranean species - like the flying gurnard (Dactylopterus volitans) - are very unrealistic and executed in a " composite-like image style". Illustrations in the works of the leading Renaissance ichtyologists Belon (1553), Rondelet (!554), Salviani (1554-1558) and Gessner (1558), possibly commissioned or acquired by Bloch from donors, can highlight how Bloch constructed his fish models. His flying gurnard for instance appears to be a composite image based on elements from uncoloured illustrations made by the draughtsmen of his Renaissance predecessors. Bloch's creation of the flying gurnard was coloured by his artists afterwards. Some debate is going on whether the heightening in gold, silver and bronze in Bloch's plates - to reproduce the glistering sheen of wet fish scales - is present or not. Only spectrophotometric analysis of colour pigments could give an answer to the question if metals like copper, silver and gold have been used by Bloch's artists. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

A MONSIEUR LE BAILLY DE SUFFREN QUE L'ON S'ATTENDOIT A VOIR A L'ISLE DE BOURBON AU RETOUR DE SE GLORIEUSE CAMPAGNE DE L'INDE [caption title]

Isle de France: Imprimerie Royale, 1784. Quarto. Moderately worn with loss at foredge and gutter margins, not affecting text. Lightly soiled and dampstained. Good. An early and unrecorded imprint from the colonial press at the French colony of Mauritius, also known as the Ile de France. The text comprises a poem in eleven stanzas by an anonymous soldier from the Regiment of the Isle de France who retired to the island of Bourbon. As most early imprints from Mauritius are official documents, this piece, a work of local literature, is particularly interesting and desirable. The Dutch were the first Europeans to become interested in the island, taking possession in 1598. After exploiting the island's dense forests for a century and introducing the cultivation of sugar cane and cotton, in 1710 the Dutch abandoned the colony. The French soon claimed it as "Ile de France," and the island remained under the control of the French East India Company until 1767. During the long war between France and England at the beginning of the 19th century, Mauritius proved to be an important strategic naval base; as a result the British took charge of the island in 1810, and the Treaty of Paris confirmed official British possession in 1814. It remained an important sugar producing colony, and in the 20th century agricultural production was expanded to include tea, rice, and other produce. Printing began on Mauritius in 1768. During the French period, until 1810, only about 400 imprints were produced, mostly in the form of official documents and newspapers, though there are also almanacs and a few other items. All are quite rare. No copies located in OCLC, and not recorded by Toussaint in his bibliography of Mauritius imprints.

EXTRACT FROM THE DEFINITIVE TREATY OF PEACE AND FRIENDSHIP...CONCLUDED AT PARIS THE 10th DAY OF FEBRUARY, 1763...EXTRACT FROM THE DEFINITIVE TREATY OF PEACE AND FRIENDSHIP...SIGNED AT VERSAILLES THE 3d DAY OF SEPTEMBER, 1783...A PROCLAMATION. GEORGE THE THIRD...TO ALL OUR LOVING SUBJECTS...[caption titles]

Grenada: Printed by John Spahn, 1784. Splitting along most of the fold, but the two leaves not detached. Stained along upper edge, lightly tanned. Good. In a half morocco box. A very rare Grenada imprint, printing extracts from the treaties which concluded the French and Indian War and the American Revolution, especially those portions pertaining to Grenada, and to Britain's guarantee of freedom of religion in her colonies. This proclamation was printed in Grenada by John Spahn, and although undated was likely produced in 1784, following the news of Britain's re-acquisition of Grenada after the Treaty of Paris concluding the American Revolution. Four articles are reprinted from the Treaty of 1763 ending the French and Indian War: Article 4, passing all of Canada over to the British, and ensuring freedom of religion to the former French subjects; Article 9, ceding Grenada, the Grenadines, St. Vincent, Dominica, and Tobago to the British and ensuring the same religious freedoms as those guaranteed to the former French subjects in Canada; and two articles pertaining to administrative matters. Four articles are also reprinted from the 1783 Treaty of Paris which ended the American Revolution: Article VII through which Britain ceded St. Lucia and Tobago to the French, and in which the French guaranteed religious freedom to the Protestant inhabitants of the islands; Article VIII, which gave Grenada, the Grenadines, St. Vincent's, Dominica, St. Christopher's, Nevis, and Montserrat, and under which the British guaranteed religious freedom; and two other articles addressing legal and administrative questions. The third item reprinted is a proclamation by George III, "given at Our Town of Fort Royal," in 1764 proclaims the sovereignty of British law on Grenada and the other recently acquired islands: "the laws of Great Britain are in force in this Island, as far as the Nature and Circumstances of the Colony will permit; and that all other Jurisdictions, Offices, Commissions and Proceedings for the future, not founded on those Our Laws of England, are hereby declared to be absolutely determined, utterly void, and totally abolished." The Proclamation authorizes the calling of a General Assembly for the islands, and gives the Governor General the power to institute laws and courts on the island until the legislature convenes. Printing on Grenada began as early as 1765 and continued through the French occupation of 1779-83. OCLC carries only one listing for John Spahn as a printer on Grenada - as publisher of the ST. GEORGE'S CHRONICLE AND GRENADA GAZETTE in 1800. Although the present extracts are undated, it is most likely that they were printed shortly after the British regained control of Grenada in 1784. This document is not listed on OCLC, nor are any Grenada imprints from the 1780s. A rare collection of treaty extracts carrying important information about the political and religious state of affairs in Grenada and the West Indies. Due to the humid climate in the area, 18th-century imprints from the West Indies are virtually unobtainable.

Premiere [-quatrieme] partie.

A Voyage to the Pacific Ocean. Undertaken by Command of his Majesty, for making Discoveries in the Northern Hemisphere..

London: W. and A. Strahan, 1784. Bindings of the quarto rubbed and a bit scuffed at extremities but appropriately patinated, some foxing of the title-pages, intermittent light browning and foxing of the atlas plates, binding of the atlas volume very well and skilfully renewed to match with original large roan label retained on front cover; an excellent set.. Three volumes, quarto, and an atlas, folio, with altogether 87 engraved plates and maps (of which 64 appear in the atlas); contemporary half calf and marbled boards, the spines ornately panelled in gilt between raised bands, a fine set. First edition: a superb copy of the official account of Cook's last voyage. This is a particularly clean and handsome set of this great publication, so popular at the time that copies were sometimes literally read to pieces. "A magnificent summation of all the public and private journals, logs, drawings and other observations made during the voyage, and… as important a record of the exploration of the North Pacific as Cook's first two voyages had been for the South Pacific. It is in fact one of the most important English books published in the last quarter of the eighteenth century…" (Forbes). The full story of the voyage, and Cook's eventual murder while revisiting the Hawaiian Islands, was so eagerly awaited by the English public that the entire first edition was sold out within three days, at the then huge price of four pounds fourteen shillings and sixpence, and copies were soon changing hands at up to ten guineas. The official artist on the voyage was John Webber, and his romantic views of the islands of the Pacific which appear as engravings here remain the most evocative portrayals of the islands - helping to create the notion of an island paradise that so affected the European public eagerly reading the voyages of discovery being published in the eighteenth century.

[Silver Royal Society medal, commemorating the life and accomplishments of Captain Cook]

[London, 1784. Silver circular medal. (1 3/4 inches in diameter). Obverse with a bust profile portrait of Cook in high relief, with legend surround "Oceani Investigator Acerrimvs" [The Most Intrepid Investigator of the Seas], reverse with the personified figure of Fortune in high relief, standing with her left arm leaning on a column, and holding in her right hand a Naval rudder resting on top of a globe, with the legend "Nil Intentatvm Nostri Liquere" [Our Men Have Left Nothing Un-attempted]. A rare silver Royal Society medal commemorating the life and naval service of Captain Cook. The Royal Society issued this commemorative medal in 1784 to coincide with the publication of Cook's Third Voyage. The commissioning, minting and distribution of the medal was personally overseen by Sir Joseph Banks. Fellows of the Society received a bronze medal, with presentation copies in gold (the one presented to Cook's widow is now in the British Museum) and silver medals to subscribers. Recent scholarship has suggested that 22 gold medals were issued, 322 silver [as the present] and 577 bronze. Notably, an image of the medal appears on the title pages of the second edition of Cook's Third Voyage.
