The second session includes acts establishing courts of assize; an act for improving the navigation of the James River; numerous acts on revenue; and others. Most notable is "An Act punishing certain offences injurious to the tranquility of this Commonwealth," which deals with incursions into Indian lands beyond Virginia's boundaries, forbidding the committing of crimes beyond the state's borders and laying out punishments thereof. There is also an act establishing the town of Louisville, Kentucky, and "An Act for vesting in George Washington, Esq; a certain interest in the Companies established for opening and extending the navigation of the Potowmack and James Rivers." The first of these is entitled "An Act for enabling the British merchants to recover their debts from the citizens of this Commonwealth." The second, the text of which comprises three full pages, is entitled "A bill intitutled An Act to amend the several Acts of Assembly concerning naval officers and ascertaining their fees and duties payable on goods imported into this state." ^All three are very rare and known in only a handful of copies. In 1542, the Nürnberg city council asked the doctor and botanist Valerius Cordus (1515-1544) to prepare an official selection of medical recipes for the use of the city's apothecaries. It remained unpublished at his premature death, but in 1546 the famous printer Johannes Petreius published the first edition. From that moment on the Nürnberg pharmacists were obliged to follow Cordus's recipes. Their colleagues from other cities quickly adopted it as well, the demand leading Petreius to publish a smaller edition in quarto. Many editions followe into the 17th century, setting an international standard.Ad 2: One of the first two illustrated editions, both published in 1543, of the most important botanical book up to the 16th century. De materia medica is both an encyclopedia and a pharmacopeia, discussing the medicinal properties of plants and animals and giving instructions for the preparation of medicines using them. This edition of a 16th century Latin translation is illustrated with hundreds of woodcuts illustrating the plants and animals. Most of these were previously used in the Kreuterbuch (1543).With bookplate and a number of extensive contemporary annotations in German and Latin.

Unbeschnittenes Exemplar, etwas eselsohrig, sonst gut erhalten. Sehr selten. Der Autor A. F. W. Crome (Sengwarden b. Paris, 1784. [2], 47pp. 217 x 143 mm. (untrimmed). Modern half cloth. Some foxing and dampstaining expecially to last few leaves, several early marginal corrections. First edition. The report of the second commission appointed by the French government to investigate animal magnetism. This commission, made up of five members of the Société Royale de Médecine, also condemned mesmerism, but its report was less influential than that of the first commission. As with the report of the first commission, an octavo edition of the second commission's report was published in the same year. One of the members of the second commission, Antoine-Laurent de Jussieu, disagreed with the commission's findings and published his own report on the investigation. Norman M130.

A DISCOVERY OF SUBTERRANEAN TREASURE: CONTAINING USEFUL EXPLORATIONS, CONCERNING ALL MANNER OF MINES AND MINERALS, FROM THE GOLD TO THE COAL; WITH PLAIN DIRECTIONS AND RULES FOR THE FINDING OF THEM IN ALL KINGDOMS AND COUNTRIES. IN WHICH THE ART OF MELTING, REFINING, AND ASSAYING THEM IS PLAINLY DECLARED

Philadelphia, 1784. 20th-century three-quarter red morocco and cloth, spine gilt. Binding lightly edgeworn. Previous owner's name stamped on three fly leaves. Titlepage tanned, with a tear in the foredge (not affecting text). Text generally quite clean. Good plus. The scarce first American edition of this 17th-century manual for the finding and refining of metals. Some consideration is given to the geologic processes leading up to the formation of deposits (Noah's Flood is called in frequently to explain the then inexplicable) and the potential for discovery in diverse places, including the Americas: "for these Mines [in New-England, Virginia, Bermuda, Peru, etc.] if they prove rich, would yield more gain in one year, than their Tobacco, and such trifles would yield in their whole lives." "Contains some interesting notices of the gold and silver mines in Peru, New England, Virginia, the Bermudas, and other parts of America. The author gives a receipt by which he claims to have produced pure gold, but at a cost greater than its value. He finally died in the streets of London of starvation" - Sabin.

A General Chart Exhibiting the Discoveries made by Captn James Cook in this and his two preceding Voyages; with the Tracks of the Ships under his Command by Lieut Heny Roberts of His Majesty's Royal Navy

Dublin:: United Company of Booksellers, by Christr. Byrne,. 1784.. Maps. Very good overall. The general chart for a Dublin edition of Cook's Voyages, re-engraved & printed by the Byrne family. A very impressive and unusual map, as the Irish editions are very often found without maps. The very bright impression, on high quality laid paper, persuades us that this is an early pull from this plate, most likely the 1784 Dublin edition, Beddie 1546. All three of Cook's voyages' tracks are marked with dates. Neatly flattened, backed on acid-free tissue, some old folds strengthened. 35 x 22.8 inches, with full margins.

A LETTER FROM PHOCION TO THE CONSIDERATE CITIZENS OF NEW- YORK, ON THE POLITICS OF THE TIMES, IN CONSEQUENCE OF THE PEACE

Philadelphia, 1784. Modern green half morocco and cloth, spine gilt. Light to moderate foxing and soiling. Very good. One of two Philadelphia editions of this influential political tract, after the first New York printing of the same year. Here Hamilton argues some of the points that were to become Federalist creed: compliance with the 1783 peace treaty with the British, an end to attacks on Tories and Tory property, and the submission of the states to the central authority of the United States. It is Hamilton's third political tract, his first two appearing in 1774 and 1775. "This impression contains, Letters on the stage, pp.13-15, and a List of books, 1 page, added by Robert Bell, and probably marks a second edition" - Evans. Scarce.

A VOYAGE TO THE PACIFIC OCEAN. UNDERTAKEN BY THE COMMAND OF HIS MAJESTY, FOR MAKING DISCOVERIES IN THE NORTHERN HEMISPHERE

Dublin, 1784. Contemporary calf, spines gilt, leather labels. Extremities lightly worn, slight wear to spine end and hinges, volume one expertly rebacked, with original spine laid down. Minor occasional foxing. A very good set. First Dublin edition of the official account of Cook's third and final voyage, including text on the exploration of Hawaii and the west coasts of America, Canada, and Alaska. The third voyage was undertaken to continue the British survey of the Pacific, but most particularly to search for a northwest passage from the western side. Sailing in 1776, the expedition called at Kerguelen Island, Tasmania, New Zealand, and the Cook, Tonga, and Society islands, then sailed north and discovered Christmas Island and the Hawaiian Islands. They then thoroughly explored and charted the Northwest Coast from the Bering Straits along the coast of Alaska and Canada, as far south as present northern California. Returning to Hawaii in 1778, the expedition was at first received warmly; but after departing and being forced to return to repair a mast, trouble developed which led to a tragic series of events in which the great navigator was killed. However, the expedition pressed on under Clerke and then Gore, and explored the coasts of Siberia and Kamchatka before returning to England in 1780. Forbes calls this work "arguably the single most important book on the Hawaiian islands." The Dublin edition was issued both with and without the plates; this copy is the issue with the plates, which is considerably more desirable and difficult to come by.

"A reissue of the 1673 edition. The specimen includes a figurated woodcut alphabet and a cursive alphabet which does not seem to be cast but rather woodcut" (Smitskamp). Contains three Armenian alphabet tables as well as the Lord's Prayer, the Ave Maria, extracts from the Gospel of John, and an Act of Contrition in Armenian. - "The best known products of the Propaganda Press, apart from its missals, grammars, and dictionaries, are the Alphabeta" (Smitskamp 193). This is, perhaps, litte surprise, for the missionaries sent forth to all parts of the globe by the Roman see through the Sacra Congregatio de Propaganda Fide, founded by Pope Gregory XV in 1622 for the purpose of spreading the Catholic interpretation of the Gospel, depended on language study textbooks such as these. The production of such alphabets was taken up as early as 1630 and was not discontinued until the early years of the 18th century; in 1812 the Congregation's in-house printing office was dissolved. - A good, nearly unbrowned copy. Smitskamp 211. Graesse I, 85.

Henry Laurens. Sworn before ne this 27. Jany 1784. J. Mitchell J.P.""Henry Laurens was the Executor of the Estate of Elias Ball who had died in 1758. Ball's will directed that his estate be divided among his four children. When the division of the Estate finally took place in 1769, only two of Elias's children, Ann and Samuel, were alive. Laurens retained half of Ball's Estate for Samuel Ball who was still a minor. Samuel Ball, still a minor, married and shortly after. His widow Beulah Ball married Joseph Sealey and they claimed Samuel's half of the Estate. Laurens declined saying that according to Elias Ball's will, the whole Estate would now go to his sole surviving child, Mrs. Ann Ball Hunt. In December 1787, the South Carolina Court of Chancery decided in the case of Sealy & Wife, Executrix of Samuel Ball vs. Henry Laurens, Executor of Elias Ball, that Laurens ""pay over to the complainants, the one half of the estate of Elias Ball, to which hos son Samuel was, at the time of his death, and under the will of the said Elias Ball, his father, entitled..."" Hence, Laurens states in this document that ""his health still continues so very infirm...""Elected Minister to Holland by the Continental Congress on October 21, 1779, Henry Laurens sailed for his post early in 1780. He was captured on the voyage and held a prisoner in the Tower of London for 15 months. He was released on December 31, 1781, in exchange for Lord Cornwallis. Appointed one of the Peace Commissioners, Laurens signed the preliminary Treaty of Paris on November 30, 1782. He returned to the United States in August 1784. "

Geschichte meines Freundes Bernhard Ambrosius Rund. Von Christoph Bachmann.

Hamburg, Benjamin Gottlob Hoffmann 1784.. 3 Tle. in 1 Band. Mit gest. Frontispiz und gest. Titelvign. 172 S., 1 Bl., 156 S., 1 Bl., 110 S. HLdr. d. Zt. mit reicher Rückenverg. ADB XXX, 347; Hergemöller, Mann für Mann I, 1021. - Einband etwas wurmspurig, sonst recht gutes Exemplar!

        Flora Rossica.

      - Petropoli (St. Petersburg) 1784-1788. 2 volumes (bound in 1). Folio (286 x 451mm). pp. (6), viii, 80; (2),114, with handcoloured engraved frontispiece and 101 beautifully handcoloured engraved plates. Contemporary tree calf, gilt ornamented spine skilfully rebacked with red and green gilt lettered label, covers with Russian imperial arms gilt. The first great illustrated flora of Russia, initiated by Empress Catherine the Great. "Among many publications Flora Rossica was Pallas's most ambitious work, intended to reach 500 or 600 plates. Catherine II underwrote the costs of publication; but a change of ministers dried up the funds, and a second volume was abandoned" (Hunt, 672)."In 1767 Pallas was invited to work at the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences. He was elected ordinary academician and had the rank of acting state councilor. For more than forty years Pallas was associated exclusively with the development of Russian science. During his first years he studied nature and the peoples of the Russian empire, participating in the Academic expeditions of 1768-1774" (DSB).The beautifully handcoloured engraved frontispiece shows Catherine the Great seated on clouds surrounded by cherubs, one of whom is presenting a copy of the book. In her right hand Catherine is holding flowers. The 101 beautifully handcoloured engravings of flowering plants are by Karl Friederich Knappe. The nomenclature of the plants are in Latin and Russian. An exceptionally fine, large copy without any foxing.Hunt 672; Nissen BBI, 1482., [Attributes: Hard Cover]

      - Raphael Winter (1784 München 1852). Der Löwe und der Affe. 1816 . Lithographie auf Papier. -- Technik: -- Lithographie auf Papier. unten rechts signiert: "R. Wintter fecit. -- [Attributes: Signed Copy]

[PRINTED CERTIFICATE, COMPLETED IN MANUSCRIPT, AUTHORIZING THE DISCHARGE OF A FRENCH COLONIAL SOLDIER]

[Mauritius, 1784. Old folds. Completed in manuscript, with wax seal and manuscript notations on verso. Worn and lightly soiled, with some minor separation and loss at folds. Good. Rare and ephemeral discharge paper for a French soldier serving on Ile de France - present-day Mauritius - in the Indian Ocean. The soldier's name in Jean Foutelle, and his age and physical description are given. The certificate is signed by the Lieutenant Colonel of the island's regiment, as well as the Lieutenant Governor. It is stamped with an official wax seal and several manuscript notations on the verso of the certificate describe later activities. The Dutch were the first Europeans to become interested in the island, taking possession in 1598. After exploiting the island's dense forests for a century and introducing the cultivation of sugar cane and cotton, in 1710 the Dutch abandoned the colony. The French soon claimed it as "Ile de France," and the island remained under the control of the French East India Company until 1767. During the long war between France and England at the beginning of the 19th century, Mauritius proved to be an important strategic naval base, and as a result the British took charge of the island in 1810, and the Treaty of Paris confirmed official British possession in 1814. It remained an important sugar producing colony, and in the 20th century agricultural production was expanded to include tea, rice, and other produce. Rare and interesting - a handsome piece of early Mauritius printing.

The front free endpaper bears the following inscriptions: "Sam. Huntington (former Governor of the State) Statute Law Book. John Turner Waite [sic] June 24. 1837. Norwich Conn." Only Huntington's name would seem to be in his hand. Huntington (1731-1796) was a signer of the Declaration of Independence and the popular third governor of the state of Connecticut.         Neptun und Thetis oder Amphitrite.

1784 1784 - Radierung, 1784, auf Bütten mit Wasserzeichen: Lilie. 17,3:25,5 cm. Vorzüglicher Abdruck mit vollem Rand, in diesem Knickfalten geglättet. Literatur: Nagler 5.
