A very good clean tight copy. John Fothergill (1712 – 1780) was an English physician, plant collector, philanthropist and Quaker. Born in Yorkshire he trained as a physician at Edinburgh, achieving M.D. in 1736, and then studied at St Thomas' Hospital, London. He settled in London about 1740 where he gained an extensive practice. In 1745, he gave a brief lecture to the Royal Society of London, citing the work of a Scottish physician, William Tossach, which is the first known lecture on the practice of mouth-to-mouth ventilation. His pamphlet, Account of the Sore Throat attended with Ulcers (1748), contains one of the first descriptions of diphtheria in English, and was translated into several languages. He was a keen botanist and at Upton, near Stratford, he had an extensive botanical garden where he grew many rare plants obtained from various parts of the world. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1763. The editor of The Works claims this to be a complete collection of Fothergill's published writings included some posthumous essays and his correspondence with various learned physicians and others. 2 essays are in Latin followed by a translation, the majority are on medical matters: emetics, ruptured diaphragm, the putrid sore throat, cortex peruvianus in scrofulous disorders, cure of sciatica, cure of consumptions, angina pectoris, influenza, Ipecacuanha and the cure of fluxes etc. There are 4 essays on botanical plants, that on coffee and its history occupying 28 pages, and the editor has compiled a list of "stove and green-house plants" in the doctor's garden at Upton. There is also an essay on the North American Colonies written in 1765 (17 pages) and a letter to a friend on the school Fothergill intended to found at Ackworth in Yorkshire. The final essay written by Lettsom concerns the disease of the bladder from which Fothergill died including his own description of symptoms and treatment which Lettsom transcribed from his letters. John Coakley Lettsom (1744-1815) was also an English physician, Quaker, and abolitionist, born in the Virgin Islands. He founded the Medical Society of London in 1773, the oldest medical society in the United Kingdom and was its president for many years.

Come parti marocco bordeaux.

"Remondini's version of Gerhard Muller's landmark map of 1754 showing the discoveries of Captains Bering and Tschirikow. Muller originally published his map in response to Joseph Delisle and Philippe Buache's map that showed previously unknown Russian discoveries and an elaborate (and entirely speculative) depiction of the imaginary voyage of Admiral De Fonte through a Northwest Passage. The map was updated several times, most significantly in 1773 after the expedition of Ivan Synd in which the elongated peninsula was shortened in favor of a large group of islands. Interestingly the speculative Northwest Passage is still shown connecting to Hudson Bay via a mythical River of the West. Dated on the plate 1784. The map was published in the Remondini's atlas, who bought in 1784 Santini's plates from his ""Atlas Universel dresse sur les meuilleures cartes modernes"" of 1776. This map however was only included in Remondini's atlas of 1784. Copperplate with original outline colour, light folds in the middle, otherwise good condition."         Encyclopédie méthodique. Finances

Chez Panckouke, Libraire - Chez Plomteux, 1784 - 1787. Tre volumi in - 8° (cm 25,4 x 19,5), pp. (4), 12, LX, 685, (1); (4), 787, (1); (4), 797, (1), XVII, (1), III, (1), IV, IV, bella e solida legatura ottocentesca in mezza pelle verde con angoli in pergamena e titoli in oro e fregi in oro e a secco al dorso. Tagli gialli.

De Walvischvangst met Veele Byzonderheden Daartoe Betrekkelyk (Many aspects of catching whales)

Petrus Conradi, Amsterdam, 1784. First Edition. Hardcover (Full Leather). Very Good Condition/No Dust Jacket. Authors uncredited, De Walvischvangst met Veele Byzonderheden Daartoe Betrekkelyk (Many aspects of catching whales), four volumes bound as one, Amsterdam and Harlingen: Petrus Conradi and Volkert van der Plaats, 1784-86. Quarto, first edition, pp. viii, 96; iv, 116; ii, 116; iv, 116, full brown calf with red morocco label on spine and blind-stamped decoration on both panels, 6 folding maps plus 15 engravings on copper plate. All text in Dutch. Originally issue in 4 wrappered parts, the present book comes in an attractive, later binding, leaves untrimmed with wide margins, with rubber stamps on all four title pages from a library in Antwerp. Plates include two sprawling views of high danger and excitement, painted by Hendrik Kobell and engraved by Mathias de Sallieth. Much of the artwork is uncredited. A plate by Didrik de Jong shows a polar-bear hunt gone horribly wrong, with the bear snacking on one of the hunters. Other plates depict natives of the north and their ways, as well as bird life. Maps show the Noordpool, Spitsbergen, a wildly inaccurate presentation of Greenland, the islands of Jan Mayen and Nova Zembla, and Iceland. Sabin 101231 quotes Barbier, to say the writing was based on the work of Cornelis Zordraker (or Zorgdrager), an early Dutch whaling commander, and edited by a Dr. Van der Plaats (see Barbier pp. 760-61 for a consideration of the later French edition of de Walvischvangst). The text gives the history of the industry, with charts on expenses and the catches. Volume 3 covers the people and wildlife of the northern latitudes, and Volume 4 deals with the herring fishery, with one of Kobell's frantically busy paintings offered on a folding plate. All in all this is an important primary documentation of northern whaling and fishing. Also see Tiele 104n and Allen 384. OCLC and KVK locate 6 copies in Europe, none in the U.S. Even the later editions rarely come to market, especially in complete form. Condition of this book: Covers lightly worn, sunned at spine; moderate soiling to edges, interior very good with only little foxing, inoffensive water stains to a few of the margins, images very good. Size: Quarto. Text is in Dutch. Text body is clean, and free from previous owner annotation, underlining and highlighting. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact. He created distinctions between public and individual hygiene, and initiated studies and awareness involving the multiple issues that involve hygiene, such as contagious diseases, health in the workplace, and problems associated with living in a high density urban environment, to name a few (Wiki).       St. Petersburg (d. i. Leipzig, Dyk), 1782-1784. The watershed James Watt letter, in which he discusses the opposition of traditional grain millers to his Albion Mill—the first grist mill to employ his improved steam engine, and considered to be the first true factory—signaling the start of the Industrial Revolution. On the market for the first time in 141 years!

Birmingham, September 5, 1784. 8" x 10". "Important Autograph Letter Signed, ""James Watt,"" 1 page, 8"" x 10"", Birmingham, September 5, 1784,addressed in his hand on the integral transmittal leaf to ""Joah Bates Esqr"" at the ""Victualling Office."" Expected folds, address panel laid in to larger sheet, else fine.A superb content letter from Watt to Joah Bates (1741-1799) a highly-regarded musician who was also helped finance London's Albion Mills: the first grist mill to utilize James Watt's improved steam engine. The mill, designed by architect Samuel Wyatt, was intended to relive the increasing demand for flour in the rapidly-growing metropolis. Although the new mill, constructed on the south bank of the Thames near Blackfriar's bridge, promised to reduce the price of bread substantially, not all welcomed it. The city's millers vehemently opposed the new concern, believing that threatened their livelihood. In the present letter, Watt mentions a published address authored y a committee of London grist-millers and meal men who opposed the erection of the mill and observes that he intends to have a response printed in the same newspaper. In full: ""Having received from Mr Brown the daily advertiser containing the address of the Millers committee in which I observe they have given me more honor than what I think belongs to me, and seem to direct their whole argument to the overthrowing [of] our patent, on the supposition we have communicated our exclusive privilege the company, I have thought it necessary to remove that imputation by a publick advertisement in the same paper, as we should be ruined could any legal advantage be got by them in that matter, and I cannot suppose that any of the Gentlemen concerned could wish us to be injured by our endeavours to advance the interests of the concern[.] I have desired Mr Brown to bring the advertisement to you & to leave it with you for your consideration as I am by no means satisfied with the draught yet[?] & do not wish it to be published untill [sic] I write again[.] And in the mean time I also wish you would turn your thoughts towards a proper answer on the part of the A[lbion]. M[ills]. Company — I remain with best respects to Mrs Bates & other friends...""Construction on the mill was complete by 1786, and employed Watt's double-acing steam engine to drive twenty pairs of millstones, each of which could grind up to nine bushels of corn per hour. The addition of a second boiler in 1789 increased the capacity of the mill so it was producing sales of £6,800 in flour per week. However, early in the morning of March 2, 1791 a fire engulfed the factory, gutting it beyond repair—much to the satisfaction of London's millers. In light of the millers' enthusiasm over the demise of the ""dark Satanic Mills"" (as William Blake later immortalized them in his poem, ""And did those feet in ancient time""), the authorities strongly suspected arson as the cause. However the managers blamed a lack of grease on one of the corn machines near the kiln and determined the fire an accident. Although London's millers rejoiced that they could not resume production now that the Albion's monopoly on grain milling had ended, its destruction placed five hundred people out of work and proved a financial disaster for Bates, who had invested his entire personal fortune, together with £10,000 from his wife, into the concern.Despite its short life, the Albion Mills demonstrated the potential for Watt's improved steam engines and the building itself became the symbol of the oncoming Industrial Revolution. In fact, the Wikipedia page on ""Industrial Revolution"" prominently features as its first illustration, Watts steam engine. This is one of the most important letters in the history of our developing civilizations and arguably as good as the famous letter to Robert Fulton written 18 years after our letter and which fetched over $65,000 in 1994.Provenance. Sotheby, Wilkinson & Hodge, Catalogue of a Most Important, Interesting & Valuable Series of Autograph Letters And Historical Documents, being the English portion of the well known collection formed by a Foreign Nobleman, London, March 17, 1875, Lot 184.         An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations

London: for W. Strahan; and T. Cadell,, 1784. The third edition, with additions, in three volumes. 3 volumes, octavo (216 × 128 mm). Bound in contemporary tree calf, red morocco labels lettered gilt to spines, all edges blue. Housed in a custom red cloth slipcase. Engraved armorial bookplate of John Templer and bookseller's ticket to front pastedowns. Extremities professionally restored; a most attractive set. First octavo edition, the third overall of the "first and greatest classic of modern economic thought" (PMM). This uncommon edition contains several additions including a new chapter titled "The Conclusion of the Mercantile System". Adam Smith's masterpiece, first published in 1776, is the foundation of modern economic thought and remains the single most important account of the rise of, and the principles behind, modern capitalism. In his Wealth of Nations, Smith "begins with the thought that labour is the source from which a nation derives what is necessary to it. The improvement of the division of labour is the measure of productivity and in it lies the human propensity to barter and exchange ? The Wealth of Nations ends with a history of economic development, a definitive onslaught on the mercantile system, and some prophetic speculations on the limits of economic control" (PMM). "The Wealth of Nations had no rival in scope or depth when published and is still one of the few works in its field to have achieved classic status, meaning simply that it has sustained yet survived repeated reading, critical and adulatory, long after the circumstances which prompted it have become the object of historical enquiry" (ODNB). With the bookplate of James Templer (1751?1832), the second son of James Templer, the builder of Stover House. In 1760 his father and partners John Line and Thomas Parlby won the contract to build the new Naval dockyard in Plymouth, necessitating their move from London to Devon. The partner John Line left his estate and Lindridge House to his wife, Jane, upon his death in 1777, and James Templer married the young widow in 1778, some two years before he was ordained in 1780.

A journal of a voyage to the South Seas, in his Majesty's ship in the Endeavour: Faithfully transcribed from the papers of the late Sydney Parkinson, draughtsman to Sir Joseph Banks, BART. in his Expedition with Dr Solander round the World...to which is now added, remarks on the preface, by the late John Fothergill..

London: C. Dilly and J. Phillips, 1784. A few light spots or browning and some offsetting, much as usual for this book; generally a fine and large copy with superb colouring.. Quarto, second enlarged edition, with a frontispiece portrait, two maps (one double-page), and 26 engraved plates with fine hand-colouring and with the uncoloured plates bound in duplicate; notably wide margins, contemporary binding of diced russia gilt, rebacked; Fothergill's Explanatory remarks bound separately in modern calf, the two housed in a cloth slipcase; bookplate of an early owner. Best edition, and this a unique example, of one of the most significant of the Cook narratives: the artist's account of Cook's first voyage and the discovery of the east coast of Australia. The very rare special issue with its engraved plates coloured by hand is a famous and desirable rarity. This most unusual copy has all the plates present in both states, the rare coloured form alongside the more regular black-and-white printings. Only the second edition appeared in a coloured issue, and the second is also the best and most complete version of the book. Material new in this edition also includes a two-page preface by John Lettsom, a lengthy (about 140 pages) extension of the text, a new double-hemisphere world map, an additional résumé of the voyages of Byron, Wallis, Carteret and Bougainville, as well as the summary of Cook's second and third voyages. This second edition of Parkinson is thus one of the earliest volumes to collect information on all three of Cook's voyages. The extra "Explanatory Remarks" and "Postscript" by Fothergill, comprising 22 pages, are in this copy bound separately in an accompanying volume. The catalogue of the Kroepelien collection gives the best explanation of this second edition, noting that while it is commonly said to have been edited by Fothergill, the title-page clearly refers to him as 'the late John Fothergill' (he died in 1780). It appears rather to have been John Coakley Lettsom, who signed the preface, who prepared the edition. The edition is based on the original sheets of the first edition that remained unsold, enhanced with a new preface and a thorough history of Cook's explorations on all three of his voyages, making this an attractive and greatly expanded edition. Some copies of the second edition had another world map added (not present in this copy, nor in one of the other coloured copies that we have handled). It is also worth noting that the separate pagination of the 22-page reply to Banks by Fothergill leads the Kroepelien catalogue to speculate that this was earlier issued as a separate pamphlet and collected here.Only a handful of copies of this coloured version can have been published as the vast majority of copies seen are of the regular uncoloured version. Only about four hundred copies were published of the entire second edition of Parkinson's book.

To Mr. And Mrs. ******* on the Death of their Infant Son., within The Boston Magazine for September, 1784

North Side of the Market, Boston : Greenleaf and Freeman , 1784. Pamphlet. Very good. A bit foxed, trimmed, disbound. This issue notable for the first printing of 'On the Death of an Infant', p. 488, by Phyllis Wheatley (1753-1784) published three months shy of her early death, this page is flawless. Small hole, p. 485, one letter loss; closed tear p. 477, no textual loss. Lacking plates. "Sometime before October 8, 1772, a semi-circle of 18 of the most prominent New Englanders adjourned to validate or debunk her poetical stature. All men, all white men, near all Harvard grads, all slave holders, many slave traders... and.. she 'passed'. Still no American publisher would take her manuscript, still 6-fold and more pleas for subscription fell short, still she would be buried in an obscure grave, two babies gone before, a husband long gone, alone but for her third baby, who died with her, just three months after her final advertisement in the September '84 Boston Magazine, in which she penned [what I feel to be] her own elegy to the death of an infant son, written toward a 'Mr.' and a 'Mrs.', seemingly an autobiographical verse of self-comfort. They, those that tolerated the verses of her existence while still part and parcel of the very society that weakly, scarcely allowed her own selfhood to be, wrote: 'We whose Names are under-written, do assure the World, that the poems specified in the following Page, were (as we verily believe) written by Phillis, a young Negro Girl, who was but a few Years since, brought an uncultivated Barbarian from Africa, and has ever since been, and now is, under the Disadvantage of serving as a Slave in a Family in this Town." She died a free woman, though attempts to strip her meager title persist. Thomas Jefferson, unsurprisingly, dismissed her as a poet, for her lack of 'animating intellect'. More surprisingly, Amiri Baraka joined in the chorus of ridicule, claiming her voice a 'far, ludicrous departure from the huge black voices.. '. Others continue to paint her as merely an 'Aunt' Tom. Henry Louis Gates, Jr., pointedly asks us to imagine a bicentennial retrial of her craft and expression. No century yet less hostile - for a young, black, small, female voice." - K. Accettola Known best for her Christian verses reflecting orthodox piety, Phillis Wheatley wrote on a wide variety of topics. A kidnapped African slave child, aged about seven years old, she was sold from the South Market in Boston to well-to-do Susanna Wheatley. She was raised in a pious Christian household, and the precocious child evidently experienced special, much-indulged comfort and only token slavery. (Phillis Wheatley was manumitted by October 18, 1773.) Tutored by family members, she quickly learned English, Latin, and the Bible, and she began writing in 1765, four years after arriving in Boston harbor. in 1767, when she was about thirteen or fourteen years old, Phillis Wheatley published her first verses in a Newport, Rhode Island, newspaper. By 1772 she had composed enough poems to advertise twenty-eight of them in The Boston Censor for February 29, March 14, and April 11. She hoped to publish a volume of her poems that year in Boston. The range of her topical concerns was already evident in these twenty-eight titles. Along with poems on morality and piety, the volume offered patriotic American pieces, an epithalamium, and a short, racially self-conscious poem, ?Thoughts on Being Brought from Africa to America.? Had enough subscribers for this volume come forward, it would have been printed. But advertisements brought no subscribers, for reasons in part racially motivated. Wheatley was encouraged by her doting and undaunted mistress to revise her manuscripts in preparation for a volume that Susanna Wheatley had arranged, with the prestigious cooperation of the Countess of Huntingdon, to have published in London in 1773, complete with an engraved likeness of the poet as a frontispiece. This was the first volume known to have been published by a black American, man or woman. In the fall of 1779, she ran (six times) proposals for a projected third volume, of thirty-three poems and thirteen letters. The work was to be dedicated to Benjamin Franklin. But again, as in 1772 and 1773, these 1779 proposals were rejected by Bostonians. In the Boston Magazine for September, 1784, there would be printed a final solicitation for subscribers to this third volume, but there would be no such book in print by the time Phillis Wheatley died three months later on December 5.

(Yverdon, Debure 1784). 1 Bl., 75 S. - Mitgedruckt noch 3 weitere, eigenständig pag. Novellen, ohne Bezug zu James Cook. Lederband d. Tls. etwas fleckig. Versand D: 5,00 EUR

        The toilet of flora;

12mo., engraved frontispiece of The Three Graces, (24) 252pp., including the half-title, a little, mainly marginal, browning and spotting, some light soiling, early ownership names on endpapers, contemporary mottled sheep, appropriately rebacked to match, gilt lettered. A good copy. A translation from the French (La Toilette de Flore, Paris, 1771) of this charming and practical handbook on women's beauty products, make-up, skin care and aids to beautification. Arranged encyclopaedia style, the author produces some 326 recipes to suit every occasion and every perceived defect. It was, the author admits, a "performance". "The chief intention of this performance is to point out, and explain to the fair sex, the methods by which they may preserve and add to their charms; and by which many natural blemishes and imperfections may be remedied or concealed. The same share of grace and attractions is not possessed by all of them", he tactfully acknowledges; "but while the improvement of their persons is the indispensable duty of those who have been little favoured by nature, it should not be neglected even by the few who have received the largest proportion of her gifts. .....".

Born in Yorkshire he trained as a physician at Edinburgh, achieving M.D. in 1736, and then studied at St Thomas' Hospital, London. He settled in London about 1740 where he gained an extensive practice. In 1745, he gave a brief lecture to the Royal Society of London, citing the work of a Scottish physician, William Tossach, which is the first known lecture on the practice of mouth - to - mouth ventilation. There are 4 essays on botanical plants, that on coffee and its history occupying 28 pages, and the editor has compiled a list of "stove and green - house plants" in the doctor's garden at Upton. John Coakley Lettsom (1744 - 1815) was also an English physician, Quaker, and abolitionist, born in the Virgin Islands. He founded the Medical Society of London in 1773, the oldest medical society in the United Kingdom and was its president for many years.         Castas de America.

Madrid 1784 - Grabados calcográficos,32 x 44 incluyendo amplios márgenes.Blanco y negro. De español e india nace mestizo (fechado 1784 a pie de grabado) 62.De mestizo e india nace coyote 63.De negro y española nace mulata 64.De mulato y española nace morisco 65.De collote e india nace chamizo 66.De español y morisca nace albino. We offer six engravings of the Casta gathering by Juan de La Cruz. We have six engravings of the twelve originally published and unobtainable nowadays. They are considered of the utmost rarity. The National Library at Madrid doesn´t have the Castas gathering complete in its collection. The intention by De La Cruz was to create a printed version of the successful casta paintings that were popular at Nueva España performed by famous painters like Cabrera. The trend reflects the need of the elites to organize a very complex society as well as the necessity to classify and understand the exotic and what is different according to the Enlightment ideas.

. The ultimately opinion of Volume IV specifies "The perverted farmer makes only one story with that we publish." Ursula, the heroine of the perverted peasant, arrived in Paris where she will alternate episodes of debauchery and honesty. She will experience the worst humiliations (raped, abducted .) and sink into vice, may redeem, fall again, etc. Here is the announcement on volume IV of the author: "Ursula, in Volume III, revolted honest player by his impudence, his libertinism [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

La Corsa delle Slitte in Vicenza nel Carnovale MDCCLXXXIV.

Stanze umiliate agli ornatissimi cavalieri e gentilissime dame. Legatura coeva in cartone bruno maculato, bordura in oro sui piatti e fregio a fiore agli angoli, tagli marmorizz. Melzi, Anonimi Italiani, (I, 258). Olschki, Choix 8129 (ben 300 fr.oro!) alla voce Leoni, come in Caproni. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
