        An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations

      London: for W. Strahan; and T. Cadell,, 1784. The third edition, with additions, in three volumes. 3 volumes, octavo (216 × 128 mm). Bound in contemporary tree calf, red morocco labels lettered gilt to spines, all edges blue. Housed in a custom red cloth slipcase. Engraved armorial bookplate of John Templer and bookseller's ticket to front pastedowns. Extremities professionally restored; a most attractive set. First octavo edition, the third overall of the "first and greatest classic of modern economic thought" (PMM). This uncommon edition contains several additions including a new chapter titled "The Conclusion of the Mercantile System". Adam Smith's masterpiece, first published in 1776, is the foundation of modern economic thought and remains the single most important account of the rise of, and the principles behind, modern capitalism. In his Wealth of Nations, Smith "begins with the thought that labour is the source from which a nation derives what is necessary to it. The improvement of the division of labour is the measure of productivity and in it lies the human propensity to barter and exchange ? The Wealth of Nations ends with a history of economic development, a definitive onslaught on the mercantile system, and some prophetic speculations on the limits of economic control" (PMM). "The Wealth of Nations had no rival in scope or depth when published and is still one of the few works in its field to have achieved classic status, meaning simply that it has sustained yet survived repeated reading, critical and adulatory, long after the circumstances which prompted it have become the object of historical enquiry" (ODNB). With the bookplate of James Templer (1751?1832), the second son of James Templer, the builder of Stover House. In 1760 his father and partners John Line and Thomas Parlby won the contract to build the new Naval dockyard in Plymouth, necessitating their move from London to Devon. The partner John Line left his estate and Lindridge House to his wife, Jane, upon his death in 1777, and James Templer married the young widow in 1778, some two years before he was ordained in 1780.

        A journal of a voyage to the South Seas, in his Majesty's ship in the Endeavour: Faithfully transcribed from the papers of the late Sydney Parkinson, draughtsman to Sir Joseph Banks, BART. in his Expedition with Dr Solander round the which is now added, remarks on the preface, by the late John Fothergill..

      London: C. Dilly and J. Phillips, 1784. A few light spots or browning and some offsetting, much as usual for this book; generally a fine and large copy with superb colouring.. Quarto, second enlarged edition, with a frontispiece portrait, two maps (one double-page), and 26 engraved plates with fine hand-colouring and with the uncoloured plates bound in duplicate; notably wide margins, contemporary binding of diced russia gilt, rebacked; Fothergill's Explanatory remarks bound separately in modern calf, the two housed in a cloth slipcase; bookplate of an early owner. Best edition, and this a unique example, of one of the most significant of the Cook narratives: the artist's account of Cook's first voyage and the discovery of the east coast of Australia. The very rare special issue with its engraved plates coloured by hand is a famous and desirable rarity. This most unusual copy has all the plates present in both states, the rare coloured form alongside the more regular black-and-white printings. Only the second edition appeared in a coloured issue, and the second is also the best and most complete version of the book. Material new in this edition also includes a two-page preface by John Lettsom, a lengthy (about 140 pages) extension of the text, a new double-hemisphere world map, an additional résumé of the voyages of Byron, Wallis, Carteret and Bougainville, as well as the summary of Cook's second and third voyages. This second edition of Parkinson is thus one of the earliest volumes to collect information on all three of Cook's voyages. The extra "Explanatory Remarks" and "Postscript" by Fothergill, comprising 22 pages, are in this copy bound separately in an accompanying volume.The catalogue of the Kroepelien collection gives the best explanation of this second edition, noting that while it is commonly said to have been edited by Fothergill, the title-page clearly refers to him as 'the late John Fothergill' (he died in 1780). It appears rather to have been John Coakley Lettsom, who signed the preface, who prepared the edition. The edition is based on the original sheets of the first edition that remained unsold, enhanced with a new preface and a thorough history of Cook's explorations on all three of his voyages, making this an attractive and greatly expanded edition. Some copies of the second edition had another world map added (not present in this copy, nor in one of the other coloured copies that we have handled). It is also worth noting that the separate pagination of the 22-page reply to Banks by Fothergill leads the Kroepelien catalogue to speculate that this was earlier issued as a separate pamphlet and collected here.Only a handful of copies of this coloured version can have been published as the vast majority of copies seen are of the regular uncoloured version. Only about four hundred copies were published of the entire second edition of Parkinson's book.

        To Mr. And Mrs. ******* on the Death of their Infant Son., within The Boston Magazine for September, 1784

      North Side of the Market, Boston : Greenleaf and Freeman , 1784. Pamphlet. Very good. A bit foxed, trimmed, disbound. This issue notable for the first printing of 'On the Death of an Infant', p. 488, by Phyllis Wheatley (1753-1784) published three months shy of her early death, this page is flawless. Small hole, p. 485, one letter loss; closed tear p. 477, no textual loss. Lacking plates. "Sometime before October 8, 1772, a semi-circle of 18 of the most prominent New Englanders adjourned to validate or debunk her poetical stature. All men, all white men, near all Harvard grads, all slave holders, many slave traders... and.. she 'passed'. Still no American publisher would take her manuscript, still 6-fold and more pleas for subscription fell short, still she would be buried in an obscure grave, two babies gone before, a husband long gone, alone but for her third baby, who died with her, just three months after her final advertisement in the September '84 Boston Magazine, in which she penned [what I feel to be] her own elegy to the death of an infant son, written toward a 'Mr.' and a 'Mrs.', seemingly an autobiographical verse of self-comfort. They, those that tolerated the verses of her existence while still part and parcel of the very society that weakly, scarcely allowed her own selfhood to be, wrote: 'We whose Names are under-written, do assure the World, that the poems specified in the following Page, were (as we verily believe) written by Phillis, a young Negro Girl, who was but a few Years since, brought an uncultivated Barbarian from Africa, and has ever since been, and now is, under the Disadvantage of serving as a Slave in a Family in this Town." She died a free woman, though attempts to strip her meager title persist. Thomas Jefferson, unsurprisingly, dismissed her as a poet, for her lack of 'animating intellect'. More surprisingly, Amiri Baraka joined in the chorus of ridicule, claiming her voice a 'far, ludicrous departure from the huge black voices.. '. Others continue to paint her as merely an 'Aunt' Tom. Henry Louis Gates, Jr., pointedly asks us to imagine a bicentennial retrial of her craft and expression. No century yet less hostile - for a young, black, small, female voice." - K. Accettola Known best for her Christian verses reflecting orthodox piety, Phillis Wheatley wrote on a wide variety of topics. A kidnapped African slave child, aged about seven years old, she was sold from the South Market in Boston to well-to-do Susanna Wheatley. She was raised in a pious Christian household, and the precocious child evidently experienced special, much-indulged comfort and only token slavery. (Phillis Wheatley was manumitted by October 18, 1773.) Tutored by family members, she quickly learned English, Latin, and the Bible, and she began writing in 1765, four years after arriving in Boston harbor. in 1767, when she was about thirteen or fourteen years old, Phillis Wheatley published her first verses in a Newport, Rhode Island, newspaper. By 1772 she had composed enough poems to advertise twenty-eight of them in The Boston Censor for February 29, March 14, and April 11. She hoped to publish a volume of her poems that year in Boston. The range of her topical concerns was already evident in these twenty-eight titles. Along with poems on morality and piety, the volume offered patriotic American pieces, an epithalamium, and a short, racially self-conscious poem, ?Thoughts on Being Brought from Africa to America.? Had enough subscribers for this volume come forward, it would have been printed. But advertisements brought no subscribers, for reasons in part racially motivated. Wheatley was encouraged by her doting and undaunted mistress to revise her manuscripts in preparation for a volume that Susanna Wheatley had arranged, with the prestigious cooperation of the Countess of Huntingdon, to have published in London in 1773, complete with an engraved likeness of the poet as a frontispiece. This was the first volume known to have been published by a black American, man or woman. In the fall of 1779, she ran (six times) proposals for a projected third volume, of thirty-three poems and thirteen letters. The work was to be dedicated to Benjamin Franklin. But again, as in 1772 and 1773, these 1779 proposals were rejected by Bostonians. In the Boston Magazine for September, 1784, there would be printed a final solicitation for subscribers to this third volume, but there would be no such book in print by the time Phillis Wheatley died three months later on December 5.

Erschien erstmals 1781 in Genf, hier vorliegend eine veränderte Neuauflage im Rahmen einer kleinen Novellensammlung von Pougens. - Sonderbares Werk des Forster-Übersetzers Pougens, dessen Glaubwürdigkeit sich laut Autor zu der im Titel genannten Verbindung zu James Cook beruft. Die ausschließlich in Europa, meist England spielende Handlung lässt allerdings keine Rückschlüsse zu, der auch im Text nicht erwähnt wird. Die Wanderungen des Alexis Goodman sind voller erotischer Erlebnisse, bei einer Geliebten mit dem sinnreichen Namen \"Myladi Love Knoth\" frägt sich der Held, ob er auf deren Nachtisch auch die Werke des Hobbes und Spinoza finden möge... denn durch den Verkehr mit zahlreichen Frauen möchte er die Stufen der Weisheit und Erkenntnis empor steigen. - Außerordentlich ordentlich frühes literarisches Werk mit Bezug zu James Cook! - Es fehlt der Haupttitel.         The toilet of flora;

      12mo., engraved frontispiece of The Three Graces, (24) 252pp., including the half-title, a little, mainly marginal, browning and spotting, some light soiling, early ownership names on endpapers, contemporary mottled sheep, appropriately rebacked to match, gilt lettered. A good copy. A translation from the French (La Toilette de Flore, Paris, 1771) of this charming and practical handbook on women's beauty products, make-up, skin care and aids to beautification. Arranged encyclopaedia style, the author produces some 326 recipes to suit every occasion and every perceived defect. It was, the author admits, a "performance". "The chief intention of this performance is to point out, and explain to the fair sex, the methods by which they may preserve and add to their charms; and by which many natural blemishes and imperfections may be remedied or concealed. The same share of grace and attractions is not possessed by all of them", he tactfully acknowledges; "but while the improvement of their persons is the indispensable duty of those who have been little favoured by nature, it should not be neglected even by the few who have received the largest proportion of her gifts. .....".

Born in Yorkshire he trained as a physician at Edinburgh, achieving M.D. in 1736, and then studied at St Thomas' Hospital, London. He settled in London about 1740 where he gained an extensive practice. In 1745, he gave a brief lecture to the Royal Society of London, citing the work of a Scottish physician, William Tossach, which is the first known lecture on the practice of mouth - to - mouth ventilation. His pamphlet, Account of the Sore Throat attended with Ulcers (1748), contains one of the first descriptions of diphtheria in English, and was translated into several languages. He was a keen botanist and at Upton, near Stratford, he had an extensive botanical garden where he grew many rare plants obtained from various parts of the world. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1763. The editor of The Works claims this to be a complete collection of Fothergill's published writings included some posthumous essays and his correspondence with various learned physicians and others. 2 essays are in Latin followed by a translation, the majority are on medical matters: emetics, ruptured diaphragm, the putrid sore throat, cortex peruvianus in scrofulous disorders, cure of sciatica, cure of consumptions, angina pectoris, influenza, Ipecacuanha and the cure of fluxes etc. There are 4 essays on botanical plants, that on coffee and its history occupying 28 pages, and the editor has compiled a list of "stove and green - house plants" in the doctor's garden at Upton. There is also an essay on the North American Colonies written in 1765 (17 pages) and a letter to a friend on the school Fothergill intended to found at Ackworth in Yorkshire. The final essay written by Lettsom concerns the disease of the bladder from which Fothergill died including his own description of symptoms and treatment which Lettsom transcribed from his letters. John Coakley Lettsom (1744 - 1815) was also an English physician, Quaker, and abolitionist, born in the Virgin Islands. He founded the Medical Society of London in 1773, the oldest medical society in the United Kingdom and was its president for many years.         Castas de America.

      Madrid 1784 - Grabados calcográficos,32 x 44 incluyendo amplios márgenes.Blanco y negro. De español e india nace mestizo (fechado 1784 a pie de grabado) 62.De mestizo e india nace coyote 63.De negro y española nace mulata 64.De mulato y española nace morisco 65.De collote e india nace chamizo 66.De español y morisca nace albino. We offer six engravings of the Casta gathering by Juan de La Cruz. We have six engravings of the twelve originally published and unobtainable nowadays. They are considered of the utmost rarity. The National Library at Madrid doesn´t have the Castas gathering complete in its collection. The intention by De La Cruz was to create a printed version of the successful casta paintings that were popular at Nueva España performed by famous painters like Cabrera. The trend reflects the need of the elites to organize a very complex society as well as the necessity to classify and understand the exotic and what is different according to the Enlightment ideas.

.         La Corsa delle Slitte in Vicenza nel Carnovale MDCCLXXXIV.

      Stanze umiliate agli ornatissimi cavalieri e gentilissime dame. Legatura coeva in cartone bruno maculato, bordura in oro sui piatti e fregio a fiore agli angoli, tagli marmorizz. Melzi, Anonimi Italiani, (I, 258). Olschki, Choix 8129 (ben 300 fr.oro!) alla voce Leoni, come in Caproni. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Some light tanning, but overall internally clean. Last six pages bound in upside down and backwards. Contemporary ownership inscriptions on verso of p.237. A good copy. A printed account of the Pennsylvania Treasury during the Revolutionary period. The text is printed in chart form throughout, with a tally of expenses at the bottom of each page. A fascinating document. The first treasurer of the State was Michael Hillegas, who was in the role in the provincial government but who turned over the job to the polymath David Rittenhouse by August 1776. Most of the text covers in detail Rittenhouse's tenure, until the spring of 1782, mostly concerned with expenditures relating to the war effort. During this time he also personally supervised the production of war material such as the casting of cannon. NAIP locates eleven copies. A key work for the finances of the Revolution. EVANS 18679. This copy has an appealing Philadelphia provenance: each volume carries the engraved armorial bookplate of Charles Chauncey, ownership inscriptions on each title page: "From Charles Chauncey to Elihu Chauncey" (dated 1811) and "Charles Chauncey Savage 1877". Charles and Elihu would appear to be popular names in the Chauncey family but this pair are the brothers of Nathaniel Chauncey (1789-1865) who briefly practised law in Philadelphia. Elihu (d. 1843) is best remembered for being the first President of the Philadelphia and Reading Railroad, one of the first railroads constructed in the United States. He has been described as "a man of national importance. He became a complete master of political economy, and was, in that science, one of the most accomplished men the country produced. He was active in public affairs, especially in the financial policy of the Government, and by reason of his rare ability, his opinions were sought whenever loans were to be floated by municipal, state or federal authorities" (John Frederick Lewis, The History of an Old Philadelphia Land Title, Philadelphia, 1934).

      Paris Imprimerie Royale 1784 - (26,5 x 20,5 cm). (2) 66 S. Moderner Pappband im Stil der Zeit. Erste Ausgabe. "This is the offical edition, printed at the King's private press in the Louvre" (D/K). - "In the spring of 1784 the King of France appointed this commission made up of members of the Academy of Sciences to investigate the claims of animal magnetism. He chose some of the most eminent men of science of his day. The chairman was Benjamin Franklin, a founding father of the United States of America, ambassador of that country to France, and a person highly knowledgeable in electricity and terrestrial magnetism. The commission's president was Antoine Laurent Lavoisier, a follower of Condillac and one of the most important chemists of the age. The secretary of the commission and editor of its report was the famous astronomer Jean Sylvain Bailly. The commission also included the director of the Academy of Sciences, Jean Baptiste Leroy, an investigator of electricity of some note. The commission began its investigations on March 12, 1784, and published its report in August of that year. Both this commission and one made up of members of the Faculty of Medicine of Paris, appointed by the King at the same time, investigated animal magnetism as practiced by Charles D'Eslon, a disciple of Mesmer. D'Eslon wanted this official inquiry, while Mesmer strongly opposed it. By cooperating with the commissions, D'Eslon effectively removed himself from his teacher's fold. Although D'Eslon's theory of animal magnetism, as presented to the commission, was somewhat different from that of Mesmer, the commissioners did not seem to be bothered by that fact. They contended that theory made no difference to their mandate, which was to decide about the existence and utility of animal magnetism. Their conclusion was that they found no evidence for the existence of an animal magnetic fluid. They ascribed any cures or improvement of health that might occur through the application of animal magnetism to the action of 'imagination.' The report was very influential and became a center of a vigorous controversy which raged for a number of years, with pamphlets and books being written for and against its conclusions" (Crabtree). - Erstes und letztes Blatt etwas angestaubt, sonst sehr sauberes und breitrandiges Exemplar. - Crabtree 31; Duveen & Klickstein 223 [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
