Joannis Physiophili opuscula. Continent: monachologiam; accusationem physiophili, defensionem physiophili; anatomiam monachi.

Augustae Vindelicorum [Augsburg], Sumtibus editoris, 1784. 8vo. 12 ll., 117 pp., six engraved plates depicting several "species" of monks and their clothes and shoes. Later half calf over marbled boards. Gilt title on the spine. Original or contemporary endpapers.l This is the second, rare edition of the Monachologia, an anticlerical parody on monks; a human species of "deceivingly human appearance, but vastly different from a man". Von Born introduces his satire with a passage from Linnaeus' "De noxa insectorum". The author applies hilarious pseudo-scholarly pretentiousness in his dealings with exterior and interior qualities defining a monk as an anthropomorphic animal, hooded, lamenting at night and starving himself. This was the first time the Linnaean system was used outside the field of natural history. The title suggests that this was the work of a Joannes Physiophylus, edited by a certain Aloysius Martius. Ignaz von Born (1742-1791), a freemason and, for a short time, a member of the Jesuits, is better known for his scientific work, mainly in the field of mineralogy, and conchology. His most famous books are: Ueber das Anquicken von Gold und Silberhältige Erze... (1775) and Index Fossilium (1775). He also described the conchological collection of Maria Theresia (now in the Zoological Museum in Vienna) in two works, viz. the Index rerum naturalium Musei Caesarei Vindobonensis (1778) and the Testacea Musei Caesarei Vindobonensis (1780). Some evenly distributed light spotting and browning, otherwise a very good copy.

        Portrait of Capt. James Cook

London: J.Webber, June 4, 1784. very good. Stipple engraving, oval 120 x 95 mm. a proof before letters; mounted. A Proof impression before letters of John Webber's and Francesco Bartolozzi's fine oval portrait of Captain Cook. This portrait has a very large margin, unusual for this decorative oval shape, which is perhaps more often seen clipped to fit an oval frame. The original portrait of Cook was painted by Webber in 1776 and has been in the National Portrait Gallery in London since 1858. Webber had collaborated with Bartolozzi earlier in 1784 to execute his famous depiction of the death of Cook, and the relationship was evidently a happy one, as they also issued the rare oval version of the depiction of Cook's death as well as this portrait. It is fair to say that the original painting of Cook has not met with universal acclaim: Beaglehole claims that on first viewing his wife exclaimed 'Who is that low villain?' (Beaglehole, On the Character of Captain James Cook, p. 418).Born in Florence in 1728, Bartolozzi arrived in 1764 in England where he worked for the next three decades. He introduced the vogue of "stippled" engraving and this portrait is a particularly good example of his work. It is rare to find any material relating to Cook's famous Pacific voyages, or to Cook himself in a Proof state as offered here.

Buchhandlung der Gelehrten,, Dessau und Leipzig. 1784 - Bd. I, Heft 2. Mit 5 kol. gestoch. Schattenrissen. Kl.-8°. 384 S. Wohl erste Ausgabe. - Hayn-Got. VII, 126 (Rar); Allgemeine Lit. Zeitung Bd. 1-2; Kayser 327. In diesem 2. Schlichter Pappbd. d. Zt., angeschmutzt u. abgegriffen, Vorsätze mit zarten Kritzeleien. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

[Dala'il al-khayrat (Tokens of beneficial deeds)]. [Ottoman Empire]., 1199 AH [1784/1785 AD].

1784. Small 8vo (14.5 x 10 cm). Arabic manuscript prayerbook written in black ink in a neat naskh Arabic hand, with well over 50 headings in red, the opening of the main text decorated with a floral design, 2 full-page perspective views in coloured inks showing the Masjid al-Haram (the Great Mosque) in Mecca, with the Ka'ba in its central plaza, and the al-Masjid an-Nabawi (the Prophet's Mosque) in Medina, about 25 calligraphic roundels, the Prophet's handprint and footprint, several calligraphic seals, 4 pages each with 3 flags, about 20 other pages with pictorial or semi-pictorial images with calligraphic inscriptions, numerous other inscriptions in circular borders and nearly every page in a rectangular border. Richly gold-tooled, tanned sheepskin(?) (ca. 1815?) with a flap that wraps around the fore-edge, rebacked. A richly decorated Islamic prayerbook in Arabic with extensive pictorial, semi-pictorial and floral decoration and calligraphic roundels, executed in the Ottoman Empire in 1199 AH (1784/85 AD). The Dala'il al-khayrat (sometimes translated as Proofs of good deeds or Waymarks of benefits) is a prayerbook invoking peace and blessings for the prophet Muhammad. It was written and compiled by Muhammad ibn Sulaiman al-Jazuli (807-870 AH or 1404/05-1465 AD), a Moroccan scholar in the mystical Islamic Sufi movement, and became one of the most popular Islamic prayerbooks, especially in the Ottoman Empire. al-Jazuli's inspiration for the prayerbook is said to have come before he left Fez for forty years in Mecca, Medina and Jerusalem, but he finalized it in Fez in the last years of his life. Some of the illustrations traditionally included in the book, including the views of the Mecca and Medina mosques, were added after his death. Many of the "illustrations" comprise texts written within a gold outline with the form of a vase, long-necked bottle, pair of trees, sword, etc., the whole in a rectangular border with a coloured background. A few are more pictorial, showing the Ka'ba, a dallah (coffee pot) and other items. - With a chip in the first leaf, just touching the text, a couple leaves torn along the border and many bifolia separated at the gutter fold, some water damage at the foot of the gutter margin and a few minor stains and tears (some repaired). The text and pictorial imagery in most leaves nevertheless remains in very good condition. The binding shows some wear, mostly at the extremities, but the rest of the tooling remains in good condition. An elaborately decorated and illustrated Islamic manuscript prayerbook from the 18th-century Ottoman Empire.

ADS ("La Comtesse du Barry"). No place, 10 Oct. 1784 (or before).

1784. Oblong 12mo (90 x 145 mm). 1 p. Addressed to Monsieur Caillebeaux, a promissory note for 2,000 livres to be paid to Monsieur Gilbert "marshand de toile a Versailles". - One of the last of the big-spenders of the Ancien régime, the Comtesse du Barry was at the epicentre of the cult of extravagance at Versailles and her quest for gowns of the utmost luxury has entered the realms of legend. Here we find her submitting a promissory note to M. Caillebeaux 'Controlleur des ventes de la ville' in favour of a Versailles cloth merchant, for the enormous sum of 2,000 livres. The document is signed on the verso by the merchant Gilbert. Though the Comtesse must have issued thousands of these notes (a good number survive) they are usually only signed by her and are rarely entirely in her hand. This one is entirely in her autograph. - Already a practised courtesan, Jeanne Bécu had been installed at Versailles in 1769 and quickly became the object of Louis XV's infatuation and his official mistress until his death in 1774. She was showered with gifts by the king, until the disaster of the diamond necklace ordered for her in 1772, at a cost of two million livres, which brought about the tangled web of deceit and extortion that fatally damaged the French monarchy in the following decade. The Comtesse du Barry was beheaded during the Terror. - Provenance: Charavay, Paris.

Partial archive of the Niemetschek-Neuling-Richter family. Sadska, Prague, Vienna and other places, 1784-1860.

1784. More than 100 letters and documents by, to and about Franz Xaver Niemetschek and his family. Copious archive aquired from the direct descendants of Mozart's first biographer. While the documents contain no new information on Mozart himself, they do shed new light on Niemetschek's hitherto rather obscure biography and provide a vivid account of the life of the Viennese and Bohemian bourgeoisie during the Biedermeier period. In particular, the present material provides documentation that the musically-minded scholar Niemetschek, a pianist himself, could very well have visited Mozart's concerts in 1787 during his time at the University of Prague, thus once more fuelling the old debate whether the biographer and his subject did in fact meet. The archive comprises material from Niemetschek's lifetime and from that of his two children up to the early 1860s. A detailed catalogue is available upon request.

"Among the astronomical writers of the 18th century, Bode occupies the first rank" (cf. ADB). "Besides his tables, his two sky atlases were for a long time indispensable tools for astronomers [...] Bode was almost the only writer to support the then not widely known ideas of Kant, Lambert, and Herschel on the infinity of space, the infinite number of inhabited worlds, and the continuous birth and passing away of stars according to natural laws" (DSB II, 220f.). The Universal Magazine published in serial form the account of Captain Cook's voyage to the Northern Hemisphere. A note in the July number states the account continues from the June Supplement. The narrative in the present volume continues through the death of Cook. Plates relating to the voyage are King and Woman of the Friendly Islands; Two Women of Otaheite; a Morai in Atooi; Man and Woman of Nootka Sound; Man and Woman of Prince Williams Sound; Man and Woman of Oonalashka; and a portrait of Cook. All but the portrait of Cook and the Morai plate are double images. Of further interest is an illustrated account of the first manned balloon flight in England, "Mr. Lunardi's Aerial Voyage" (an "inflammable air balloon" fitted with oars) from London to Hertfordshire, on which Lunardi had for companions "a dog, a cat, and two pigeons." The volume contains much of interest with content pertaining to literature, exploration, and a landmark in the history of flight. The volume would merit rehabilitation. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Alphabetum Armenum. Cum Oratione Dominicali, Salutatione Angelica, initio Evangelii S. Iohannis et Cantico Poenitentiae. Rome, Sac. Congreg. de Propaganda Fide, 1784.

1784. 8vo. 32 pp. With woodcut printer's device to title page. Modern half calf. Brief introduction to the Armenian language for Catholic missionaries. "A reissue of the 1673 edition. The specimen includes a figurated woodcut alphabet and a cursive alphabet which does not seem to be cast but rather woodcut" (Smitskamp). Contains three Armenian alphabet tables as well as the Lord's Prayer, the Ave Maria, extracts from the Gospel of John, and an Act of Contrition in Armenian. - "The best known products of the Propaganda Press, apart from its missals, grammars, and dictionaries, are the Alphabeta" (Smitskamp 193). This is, perhaps, litte surprise, for the missionaries sent forth to all parts of the globe by the Roman see through the Sacra Congregatio de Propaganda Fide, founded by Pope Gregory XV in 1622 for the purpose of spreading the Catholic interpretation of the Gospel, depended on language study textbooks such as these. The production of such alphabets was taken up as early as 1630 and was not discontinued until the early years of the 18th century; in 1812 the Congregation's in-house printing office was dissolved. - A good, nearly unbrowned copy. This multilingual album of type specimens is a remarkable showcase for the typographical versatility of the Propaganda Press in the later 18th century, shortly before the printing-house was "despoiled unmercifully" (Updike I, 183) in 1798 by the French Directory. Includes versions in Arabic, Armenian, Chaldaic, Chinese, Croatian, Classical and Modern Greek, Hebrew, Malabar, Persian, Serbian, Syrian, Tibetan, and Turkish. - Some browning and foxing throughout; a few edge flaws (with occasional loss of corner) repaired. Frontespizio inciso all'acq. con vignetta.

Rome, Antonio Fulgoni, 1784

Antonio Fulgoni, 1784. 8° (192x123 mm). 70 pp. Contemporary marbled boards backed in leather. Spine ruled and lettered in gilt. Red sprinkled edges. Corners and margins of both covers light torn, lettering piece slightly chipped. An excellent copy. The celebrated geologist of the Alps, who in 1781 had climbed Mount Etna and visited the Aelion archipleago, travelled in February and March 1784 in the area affected by the desastrous earthquake of 1783. His attention focuses on aspects neglected in the numerous pamphlets and chronicles published on this event, and he explains scientifically the exceptional effects of the violent shocks on the landscape and the nature of the country. ?The scientific methodology of Dolomieu, expressed through his researches on Italian volcanoes, adopted the essential elements of the late 18th century geology: the scientific travel and detailed fieldwork; the mineralogical skills and the practical knowledge of mining; the comparative study of mountains and volcanoes [?] The perception of the great complexity, number and variety of geological phenomena had moved Dolomieu away from the general theories of the Earth. He searched for the solution to the geological problems through travelling. This is the reason why, instead of referring to general theoretical models, he constantly introduced questions about problems that emerged from the fieldwork? (E. Vaccari, ?Volcanic Travels?, p. 42).

Paris, H. Cousin (plates printed by N. Rémond), [1839-]1841-1843. 3 volumes. Folio. With 301 engraved plates, printed in colour a la poupée and finished in colour by hand, engraved by Duménil, Gabriel and Oudet after Johann Jakob Jung. Contemporary half morocco, gold-tooled spine.

Blunt, p. 229; Buchanan, Nature into art, p. 59; GFB, p. 75; Nissen, BBI 150; Cat. De Belder 73. First edition of a beautifully illustrated work on camellias by the Italian abbot Lorenzo Berlèse (1784-1863), perhaps the greatest authority on the subject during the 19th century. The three volumes include 300 different types of camellias, each illustrated with a brightly coloured engraved plate. Each plate is accompanied by one leaf, with the description of the flower printed on the upper half, and a scientific monograph on camellias printed on the remaining space running through all the text leaves. The flowers were drawn from nature in Berlèse's greenhouses at Paris (where he held more than 800 camellia species and types) by the German artist Johann Jakob Jung (1819-1844?). Jung was among the various painters who were influenced by the great French flower artist Pierre-Joseph Redouté (1759-1840), who was praised for his brilliant and prolific illustrations. The first flower in the first volume, the Camellia derbiana, is illustrated with two plates. In very good condition, only slightly foxed.
