        Le Lever de la mariée

circa 1784. Engraving. Proof before letters. Printed on laid paper with watermark. In excellent condition with the exception of some very light foxing in the right margin. Image size: 15 x 11 7/8 inches. 18 5/8 x 13 3/8 inches. 18 7/8 x 14 1/8 inches. A fantastic proof before letters of this decorative Rococo print of a happy couple the morning after their wedding. Genre painting came back into favor when the Academy admitted Watteau's "The Pilgrimage to Cythera" to its ranks in 1717. From that point on a fashion for decorative subjects swept the country influencing an entire generation of French artists. This craze for intimate boudoir scenes did not subside until after the onset of the Revolution when, the frivolous tastes of the aristocratic elite were dispelled and a more sober era descended upon French art. This print is a wonderful example of French Rococo tastes. The picture is set in a sumptuous bedroom the morning after a young, aristocratic couple's wedding. The young bride sits on her father's lap while he speaks with his new son-in-law. Two chambermaids ready her toiletries while another closes the curtains on the marriage bed. This beautiful print is the pendant picture to Pierre Antoine Baudouin's "Le Coucher de la Mariee" which depicts the young newlyweds retiring to bed on their wedding night. Baudouin's painting was engraved by Moreau le jeune and finished by F. P. Simonet. Dugoure's frivolous scene is beautifully engraved by Triere creating a truly captivating image, which epitomizes the grand era of French Rococo art. Text: 1p. publisher's advertisements at end of vol.III. 1 folding letterpress table, 24 engraved maps, coastal profiles and charts (14 folding), extra-illustrated with a duplicate folding engraved "Chart of the NW Coast of America and NE Coast of Asia" which is also present in the atlas. Atlas vol.: 63 engraved plates, plans and maps (one double-page, one folding), uncut. Text: contemporary tree calf, expertly rebacked to style, the flat spines divided into six compartments by double fillets enclosing a neo-classical roll, red/brown morocco lettering-piece in the second compartment, green morocco label with onlaid disc of red/brown morocco with volume number, the remaining compartments elaborately tooled in gilt with stylised foliage cornerpieces around various large centrally-place tools; Atlas: expertly bound to style in half calf over marbled paper-covered boards, the flat spine elaborately tooled in gilt uniform to the text. A fine set of the first edition of the official account of Cook's third and last voyage: a cornerstone among travel and voyage literature on the exploration of Hawaii and the northwest coast of America, Canada and Alaska. This copy particularly desirable with the plates in the atlas uncut. "The famous accounts of Captain Cook's three voyages form the basis for any collection of Pacific books. In three great voyages Cook did more to clarify the geographical knowledge of the southern hemisphere than all his predecessors had done together. He was really the first scientific navigator and his voyages made great contributions to many fields of knowledge" (Hill). "Cook's third voyage was organized to seek the Northwest Passage and to return [the islander] Omai to Tahiti. Officers of the crew included William Bligh, James Burney, James Colnett, and George Vancouver. John Webber was appointed artist to the expedition. After calling at Kerguelen Island, Tasmania, New Zealand, and the Cook, Tonga, and Society Islands, the expedition sailed north and discovered Christmas Island and the Hawaiian Islands, which Cook named the Sandwich Islands. Cook charted the American west coast from Northern California through the Bering Strait as far north as latitude 70 degrees 44 minutes before he was stopped by pack ice. He returned to Hawaii for the winter and was killed in an unhappy skirmish with the natives over a boat. Charles Clarke took command and after he died six months later, the ships returned to England under John Gore. Despite hostilities with the United States and France, the scientific nature of this expedition caused the various governments to exempt these vessels from capture. The voyage resulted in what Cook judged his most valuable discovery - the Hawaiian Islands" (Hill). The atlas volume is bound in landscape format rather than portrait. the atlas volume contains the rare "Death of Cook" plate separately issued. Beddie 1543. Lada Mocarski 37. Hill 361 the official account of Cook's third and final voyage, undertaken to seek the Northwest Passage from the Pacific. The officers of this voyage aboard the Resolution form a who's who of later Pacific exploration, including William Bligh, George Vancouver, and James Burney. Cook visited New Zealand, Tahiti, and other islands before making what he considered his greatest discovery, the Hawaiian Islands, which he named the Sandwich Islands. Cook then headed north reaching present-day Oregon, then following the coast north to Alaska, sailing through the Bering Strait, where the ship was stopped by pack ice in August of 1778. In January 1779 Cook returned to the Hawaiian Islands where he had previously been welcomed, but tensions quickly mounted, prompting Cook to set sail on February 4. Several days later a storm broke the Resolution's foremast, and Cook returned to the islands to make repairs. The natives, not happy to see the Englishmen again stole of the ship's boats, Cook took a Hawaiian chief hostage and was killed returning to the ship with his prisoner. The first two volumes of this set are from Cook's journals; the third volume was written by Captain James King, who succeeded Cook. It is quit unusual for the atlas to be bound up this way. It is also quite unusual for the atlas to have the Death of Cook plate..

A New, Authentic, and Complete Account of Voyages Round the World,

London: Alexander Hogg, , [1784–6] . Undertaken and Performed by Royal Authority. Containing a New, Authentic, Entertaining, Instructive, Full and Complete History of Captain Cook's First, Second, Third and Last Voyages... The Whole of these Voyages of Capt. James Cook, &c. being Newly written by the Editors from the Authentic Journals of Several Principal Officers and other Gentlemen of the most Distinguished Naval and Philosophical Abilities, who sailed in the Various Ships, and now publishing under the Immediate Direction of... Assisted, Very Materially, by a Principal Officer who sailed in the Resolution Sloop, and by Many Other Gentlemen of the Royal Navy. 2 volumes, folio (395 × 260 mm). Contemporary calf-backed marbled boards with vellum corners, somewhat worn and with some stripping of the marble from the boards, rebacked with the original spine laid down, new labels. Contemporary ownership inscription of Mrs. Harris to both front pastedowns, bookplate of Sybil and Arthur Colefax. With engraved portrait frontispiece and 156 other plates, maps, and charts including one large folding map showing the track of Cook's voyages. Light browning, the title page very slightly cropped into the imprint details, otherwise an unusually clean and wide-margined copy. First edition of this "omnibus" compilation of Cook together with Byron, Wallis, Carteret, Mulgrave, Anson and Drake. Printed in double column in "large new Types, constructed on Purpose to comprise much Matter in a little Compass" and issued in 80 sixpenny parts with avowedly philanthropic intentions, Hogg's edition certainly did much to disseminate knowledge of Cook's discoveries; "Some other editions of these Works, unnecessarily extended to many large Volumes by loose Printing &c. and published by mercenary Persons… would cost the Purchaser the enormous Sum of upwards of Twenty Guineas; so that many Thousands of Persons who would wish to peruse the valuable Discoveries so partially communicated to the World… have hitherto been excluded from gratifying their eager Curiosity; but this Edition is published in only Eighty Numbers at 6d each, making when complete either One or Two Large Handsome Volumes in Folio… The Poor as well as the Rich will thus become familiarly acquainted with these extraordinary and important Voyages and Discoveries" (publisher's preface). "An important collection of English voyages... [which] sometimes gives the original accounts, others are edited or abridged versions, and frequently additional material from other sources are added to give scope and depth to the narratives" (Hill). George William Anderson is almost certainly a pseudonym.

Paris: Delamarche, 1784 [but circa 1791]. Engraved map, period hand- colouring in outline. Inset of the southern tip of Florida. 22 x 31 3/4 inches. A very rare copy of the first French map of the newly-created United States following the Treaty of Paris and "one of the most attractively designed and executed maps of the period" (Ristow). Lattré's famous map is held in a select group of the earliest maps of the nascent United States published immediately following the Treaty of Paris. Published in Paris, Lattré's map is believed to be the first to be printed following the final exchange of the ratification documents in May 1784. Cartographically, like the John Wallis and Abel Buell maps, Lattré relied on previous mappings of the United States. This appropriately included John Mitchell's famous map, which would also be used as the official map during the peace negotiations. Benjamin Franklin's beloved status in France and his importance to the negotiations which formally ended the Revolution are reflected in Lattré's dedication to the American patriot. The dedication, Cappon writes, "lends historical significance to the work," and Cappon further suggests that Lattré may have presented a copy of the map in person to Franklin at the minister's residence in Passy. The beautiful cartouche contains the title as well as the dedication to Franklin, both superimposed upon the great sail of a ship, upon which a seaman hangs emblems of the new United States. These include the earliest depiction of the Great Seal of the United States to appear on a map. The heraldic emblem in the seaman's hands above and to the left of the Great Seal are the arms of the Franklin family (a dolphin between two martlets flanked by lion's heads) and the third emblem is the seal of the Society of Cincinnati (a bald eagle with a central medallion depicting Cincinnatus with his sword). Previously, this separately-published map was thought to exist in but one state. However, three states have now been identified. The first issue includes flanking panels of text on either side of the map detailing the historic military events of the Revolution. In the cartouche, immediately below the date 1784, a single line reads "avec Privilege du Roi" and the lower right margin below the neat line includes Lattré's imprint with a Rue St. Jacques address. The second state is nearly identical to the first and was likely issued shortly after. The second issue has the same "avec Privilege du Roi" line in the cartouche and with Lattré's imprint in the lower margin; however, the engraved flanking panels of text are now absent and a table listing the thirteen states and their capitals now appears to the left of the Florida inset. In the third state, as this copy, Delamarche's imprint replaces the "privilege" line in the cartouche and Lattré's imprint in the lower margin has been removed. Additionally, Vermont appears in the list of states and Washington, D.C. is named on the map itself, both suggesting a date after 1791. All states are rare.         TO THE RIGHT HONOURABLE THE LORDS COMMISSIONERS FOR EXECUTING THE OFFICE OF LORD HIGH ADMIRAL OF GREAT BRITAIN, &c. THIS PLATE REPRESENTING THE DEATH OF CAPTAIN COOK IS HUMBLY INSCRIBED. BY THEIR LORDSHIP'S MOST OBEDIENT AND DEVOTED SERVANT, JOHN WEBBER

London: J. Webber and W. Byrne, January 1, 1784.. Engraving, the sheet measuring 19 1/2 x 24 1/4 inches; the engraved surface 16 3/4x 23 inches. Repaired closed tear in upper margin, extending 1 1/2 inches into the sky at the top of the image. Several expert repairs in margins, including some paper restoration. Good. Matted. The scarce separate printing of Webber's plate of the death of Captain James Cook at the hands of the Hawaiian natives. Dated January 1, 1784 in the imprint, it predates the publication of the account of Cook's third voyage later that same year. The plate was not formally part of the contents of the third voyage atlas, and is only occasionally found there. Beddie identifies this as the earliest state of the print. Webber was the son of a Swiss sculptor who emigrated to London, and he received artistic training in Berne and Paris. He was appointed as draughtsman to Cook's third voyage, and interviewed the eyewitnesses to the attack in order to create this image. Cook is shown trying to stop his men from firing on the Hawaiians, one of whom is about to stab him in the back. The figures were engraved by Bartolozzi, and the landscape engraved by Byrne. The Hill catalogue notes a scarce one-page folio description of the engraving, printed in English and French, which is not present here. Forbes does not list the present first printing of the plate, though he does list a 1785 printing. Scarce, and an iconic image of Pacific exploration. BEDDIE 2603. HILL 1835.         Royal Society Memorial Medal of Captain James Cook

London:. 1784.. Limited edition. A rare historic tribute medal in commemoration of Captain James Cook, commissioned by the fellow members of the Royal Society. James Cook twice circumnavigated the globe (1768- 1771 & 1772 - 1775), and was then elected a Fellow of the Royal Society. He discovered & charted the east coast of Australia; discovered the Hawaiian Islands; circumnavigated and charted New Zealand; surveyed coastline in Alaska; was the first to cross the Antarctic Circle. Cook performed a great deal of the scientific work on his voyages with the support of the Society. Word of Cook's death in Hawaii in 1779 reached the Society in 1780; the medal was then commissioned and completed in 1784. Engraved by Lewis Pingo (1743-1830) of the Royal Mint in London.& & The portrait of Cook shows him in full Naval uniform in profile with the legend "IAC COOK OCEANI INVESTIGATOR ACERRIMUS" (the most intrepid explorer of the seas), while the reverse has an emblematical figure of Britannia and the legend "NIL INTENTATUM NOSTRI LIQUERE" (our men have left nothing unattempted).         [Silver Royal Society medal, commemorating the life and accomplishments of Captain Cook]

[London: 1784]. Silver circular medal. (1 3/4 inches in diameter). Obverse with a bust profile portrait of Cook in high relief, with legend surround "Oceani Investigator Acerrimvs" [The Most Intrepid Investigator of the Seas], reverse with the personified figure of Fortune in high relief, standing with her left arm leaning on a column, and holding in her right hand a Naval rudder resting on top of a globe, with the legend "Nil Intentatvm Nostri Liquere" [Our Men Have Left Nothing Un-attempted]. A rare silver Royal Society medal commemorating the life and naval service of Captain Cook. The Royal Society issued this commemorative medal in 1784 to coincide with the publication of Cook's Third Voyage. The commissioning, minting and distribution of the medal was personally overseen by Sir Joseph Banks. Fellows of the Society received a bronze medal, with presentation copies in gold (the one presented to Cook's widow is now in the British Museum) and silver medals to subscribers. Recent scholarship has suggested that 22 gold medals were issued, 322 silver [as the present] and 577 bronze.         Poivre Noir du Malabar... (peppercorn tree)

Jacques ChartonIllustrated plate from Collection de plantes etrangeres en fleurs, fruits, corail et coquillagesParis: 1784Hand-colored copperplate engraving17? x 11?; 22 1/2? x 18? framedFramed in museum quality frame, mounted with archival materials with uv plexiglassIn the early 18th century, France turned away from imperial aspirations to focus on more personal and pleasurable pursuits. As political life and private morals relaxed, the change was mirrored by a new style in art, one that was more intimate, and decorative.Louis XIV?s desire to glorify his dignity and the magnificence of France had been well served by the monumental and formal qualities of most seventeenth-century French art. But members of the succeeding court began to decorate their elegant homes in a lighter, more delicate manner. This new style has been known since the last century as rococo, from the French word, rocaille, for rock and shell garden ornamentation. First emerging in the decorative arts, the rococo emphasized pastel colors, sinuous curves, and patterns based on flowers, vines, and shells. Painters turned to the sensual surface delights of color and light, and from weighty religious and historical subjects to more intimate scenes. These original hand-colored engravings from a collection of 59 from Jacques Charton?s, Collection de plantes etrangeres en fleurs, fruits, corail et coquillages are splendid examples of the French decorative arts produced in Paris in 1784, just previous to the French Revolution. These lovely engravings, most likely executed for porcelain designs, show a variety of exotic natural history subjects, mainly flowering plants and shells, accompanied by animals or insects, some with accompanying background vignettes.  The style of representation ranges from the mildly stylized but naturalistic to the intensely fantastical, verging on the surreal such as, a selection of ?fruits of the sea? hanging from the branches of a plant emerging from a seashell.  This style would soon give way to one that adhered to the austerity and democratic spirit of the revolutionaries at the end of the century.*Arader Galleries is never never knowingly undersold*
