      G. Robinson, London 1784 - 187 x 114 mm (7 3/8 x 4 1/2"). 2 p.l., ii, 225 pp. FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH. ORIGINAL PUBLISHER'S THIN BLUE BOARDS AND PAPER SPINE. In a modern blue cloth folding box with black morocco label. ESTC T-1128. The expected wear to the temporary binding: paper flaking from spine, front joint cracked and tender, boards somewhat soiled, but everything still intact. Faint browning and foxing right at edges, otherwise an excellent copy internally, the text fresh and clean, with all of its ample margins preserved. This is an unsophisticated copy in its original temporary binding of the first English edition of Voltaire's "Memoirs," published in the same year as the French version. Although he was one of the most influential leaders of the Enlightenment and a towering figure in French literature, in the present work Voltaire (1694-1778) writes a quiet, intimate account of the years 1733 to 1760, focusing on two of the most important relationships in his life--with the Marquise du Châtelet and with Frederick the Great of Prussia. Still, the book hardly escaped notice, being banned in Paris; the introductory letter here notes that seven booksellers had been jailed for distributing it. Most of the uproar was caused by Voltaire's unflattering portrait of the Prussian king and his criticism of the French monarchy. Émilie du Châtelet was arguably the most brilliant woman of her day; Voltaire declared that she was "a great man whose only fault was being a woman." In 1733, she and Voltaire retired to her chateau at Cirey, where they could study without the distractions of Paris. Together they tackled the works of Newton, which the Marquise translated into French for the first time, and accumulated a library of more than 21,000 volumes. Theirs was a calm, happy relationship, in contrast with the turbulent friendship between Voltaire and Frederick II, who made what the philosopher considered unreasonable demands on his time. The memoir ends while Voltaire was living in Switzerland, and he recounts with relish the freedom enjoyed in that republic. The "Memoirs" is not a common book to begin with, and is rare in a temporary publisher's binding, as here. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

A Voyage Towards the South Pole, and Round the World

London: W. Strahan and T. Cadell,, 1784. Performed in His Majesty's Ships the Resolution and Adventure, In the Years 1772, 1773, 1774, and 1775 … In which is included, Captain Furneaux's Narrative of his Proceedings in the Adventure during the Separation of the Ships. 2 volumes quarto (290 × 233 mm). Contemporary streaked calf, neatly rebacked, flat spine, red morocco lettering-piece to the second, and black morocco roundel numbering-piece to the fourth compartment, the others with a ship-device framed by wreathed rose tools, edges and turn-ins milled in blind, marbled endpapers. Portrait frontispiece and 49 other engraved plates, 24 of them folding, 14 maps, 6 of them folding, including the large chart of the Southern Hemisphere, and 1 folding table. A little rubbed and with some restoration to the corners, offsetting from the portrait, but internally clean, short tear with no loss to the large folding map, a very good set. Fourth edition, seven years after the first. The fame Cook had achieved by his first voyage allowed him to write the account of his second, and historically most important voyage, himself. The goal of this voyage was to circumnavigate the world as far south as possible in search of the as yet undiscovered great 'Southern Continent.'. The ships went east via the Cape of Good Hope, crossed the southern ocean south of Australia and actually crossed the Antarctic Circle, making Cook the first man to get so close to the South Pole. Whilst disproving the existence of an enormous land mass, Cook discovered, or revisited, many of the islands in the south Pacific, including New Caledonia, Palmerston and Norfolk, Easter Island, the Marquesas, New Hebrides, Tonga, the South Sandwich Islands and South Georgia. In addition to the detailed description of the geographical, botanical and cultural discoveries on their way towards the south pole, Cook also deals with the organizational problems on a ship on an expedition of such a large scale. "Cook was a brilliant navigator and hydrographer, an excellent administrator and planner, and probably the first sea captain to realize the important of preserving the health and well-being of his crew. He did everything possible to maintain their physical fitness and the cleanliness of both men and ships. He conquered the hitherto prevalent scurvy by cutting down the consumption of salt meat and by always having fresh vegetables and fruit on board; in particular limes (first suggested by James Lind in 1775), whence the terms 'lime-juicer' and 'limey' for a British ship and her sailors. On his second voyage, of 112 men on board the Resolution, which he commanded, Cook lost only one by disease - and that not scurvy - a unique achievement in his time" (PMM). Modern bookplates of William Binns Cowper to the front pastedowns, twentieth-century ownership inscription to the first blanks, and those of John A. Cowen, dated 18770, to the title pages.

        [Man of Mangea]

London,: circa, 1784.. Proof engraving, 315 x 250 mm, laid down on old backing with manuscript notes in ink at bottom right; in good condition, framed. Rare proof impression before letters of one of Webber's more striking portraits from Cook's third voyage, of the Cook Islands native Mou'rooa, who transferred into Cook's boat as the captain reconnoitred off Mangaia in March 1777. He was the only one to actually board the Resolution, 'tho not without evident signs of fear' (Beaglehole, Journals III, part 1, p. 79). As the ships did not land on Mangaia, the little information they gathered was derived from questions put to Mou'rooa by Omai. His ears were already pierced with the long slit in which he stuck a knife he was given as a gift or trade.Joppien and Smith note that this was one of the earliest from the series of engravings to be printed. They also note another proof impression of this plate in the National Library of Australia.Joppien & Smith, 3.31A.

circa 1784. Engraving. Proof before letters. Printed on laid paper with watermark. In excellent condition with the exception of some very light foxing in the right margin. Image size: 15 x 11 7/8 inches. 18 5/8 x 13 3/8 inches. 18 7/8 x 14 1/8 inches. A fantastic proof before letters of this decorative Rococo print of a happy couple the morning after their wedding. Genre painting came back into favor when the Academy admitted Watteau's "The Pilgrimage to Cythera" to its ranks in 1717. From that point on a fashion for decorative subjects swept the country influencing an entire generation of French artists. This craze for intimate boudoir scenes did not subside until after the onset of the Revolution when, the frivolous tastes of the aristocratic elite were dispelled and a more sober era descended upon French art. This print is a wonderful example of French Rococo tastes. The picture is set in a sumptuous bedroom the morning after a young, aristocratic couple's wedding. The young bride sits on her father's lap while he speaks with his new son-in-law. Two chambermaids ready her toiletries while another closes the curtains on the marriage bed. This beautiful print is the pendant picture to Pierre Antoine Baudouin's "Le Coucher de la Mariee" which depicts the young newlyweds retiring to bed on their wedding night. Baudouin's painting was engraved by Moreau le jeune and finished by F. P. Simonet. Dugoure's frivolous scene is beautifully engraved by Triere creating a truly captivating image, which epitomizes the grand era of French Rococo art.         Lommebog for Skuespilyndere. 3 bd. (Det udkomne).

Kbhvn.: J.H. Thiele 1784-86. 12mo. [Gyldendals Teaterleksikon]. DBL(3) XIII, 263. Bibl. Danica I, 1081.

Contemporary gray and beige paper boards over birch bark, printed paper labels. Some loss to paper on spines, costing most of third volume spine label. Front boards loosening on first and second volumes. Second and third volumes with occasional light staining and foxing. In original unsophisticated condition, untrimmed, a remarkable survival. In a cloth clamshell case, leather label. The first extensive history of New Hampshire, and "one of the most important eighteenth- century American histories," according to Streeter. The first two volumes trace the history of New Hampshire, while the third discusses the geography, natural history, society, laws, government, etc. The author was a determined antiquarian and founder of the first American historical association, the Massachusetts Historical Society. The publication of this work in different cities over an eight-year period has made complete sets difficult to obtain. Tocqueville praised Belknap's history, saying, "The reader of Belknap will find more general ideas and more strength of thought, than are to be met with in other American historians, even to the present day" (quoted in Larned). In the third volume of this set the publication date appears to read "1793" in Roman numerals, but this is a typographic error. Howes claims that a second edition of the third volume appeared in 1793, but this is not noted by Evans, ESTC, or BAL. EVANS 18344, 23166, 24088. STREETER SALE 715 (vol. 1 only). SABIN 18344.         A most interesting and important Autograph Letter written to the Lawyer Thomas Adams at Alnwick in which he discusses the Political Situation at the time expressing dismay and uncertainty on the outcome of the Coalition between Fox and Pitt.

Richmond. March 6 1784 - 4to., 5 pages, approx 750 words, entirely holograph, address page, dust line from fold, with postmark and seal. George Onslow, First Earl of Onslow (1731-1814). Onslow is seriously concerned for the outcome of the Political crisis. "I must be a paricide if I could patiently & without honour see the House of Commons in danger of being annihilated or lowered in the scale of the Constitution". He is also worried about the effect on the Crown: "On the other side I tremble at any Diminuation of the due Prerogative of the Crown . . . One great evil which shocks me is the appealing to the People at large against the Representative Body of them". Fox started this some "2 or 3 years ago & is now used as a weapon against him". He also refers to the judgement of Lord Mansfield's conduct on those matters. It is clear from the tone of this letter that Onslow and Adams are already well acquainted and even friends for the tone suggests that he is searching for Adams's opinion.
