Grenada: Printed by John Spahn, [?]. 1784 - [4]pp. on a folio sheet folded once to quarto size. Splitting along most of the fold, but the two leaves not detached. Stained along upper edge, lightly tanned. Good. In a half morocco box. A very rare Grenada imprint, printing extracts from the treaties which concluded the French and Indian War and the American Revolution, especially those portions pertaining to Grenada, and to Britain's guarantee of freedom of religion in her colonies. This proclamation was printed in Grenada by John Spahn, and although undated was likely produced in 1784, following the news of Britain's re-acquisition of Grenada after the Treaty of Paris concluding the American Revolution. Four articles are reprinted from the Treaty of 1763 ending the French and Indian War: Article 4, passing all of Canada over to the British, and ensuring freedom of religion to the former French subjects; Article 9, ceding Grenada, the Grenadines, St. Vincent, Dominica, and Tobago to the British and ensuring the same religious freedoms as those guaranteed to the former French subjects in Canada; and two articles pertaining to administrative matters. Four articles are also reprinted from the 1783 Treaty of Paris which ended the American Revolution: Article VII through which Britain ceded St. Lucia and Tobago to the French, and in which the French guaranteed religious freedom to the Protestant inhabitants of the islands; Article VIII, which gave Grenada, the Grenadines, St. Vincent's, Dominica, St. Christopher's, Nevis, and Montserrat, and under which the British guaranteed religious freedom; and two other articles addressing legal and administrative questions. The third item reprinted is a proclamation by George III, "given at Our Town of Fort Royal," in 1764 proclaims the sovereignty of British law on Grenada and the other recently acquired islands: "the laws of Great Britain are in force in this Island, as far as the Nature and Circumstances of the Colony will permit; and that all other Jurisdictions, Offices, Commissions and Proceedings for the future, not founded on those Our Laws of England, are hereby declared to be absolutely determined, utterly void, and totally abolished." The Proclamation authorizes the calling of a General Assembly for the islands, and gives the Governor General the power to institute laws and courts on the island until the legislature convenes. Printing on Grenada began as early as 1765 and continued through the French occupation of 1779-83. OCLC carries only one listing for John Spahn as a printer on Grenada - as publisher of the ST. GEORGE'S CHRONICLE AND GRENADA GAZETTE in 1800. Although the present extracts are undated, it is most likely that they were printed shortly after the British regained control of Grenada in 1784. This document is not listed on OCLC, nor are any Grenada imprints from the 1780s. A rare collection of treaty extracts carrying important information about the political and religious state of affairs in Grenada and the West Indies. Due to the humid climate in the area, 18th-century imprints from the West Indies are virtually unobtainable.

The State of the Prisons in England and Wales, with Preliminary Observations, and an Account of some Foreign Prisons and Hospitals. [Bound with]: Appendix to the State of the Prisons in England and Wales, &c. Containing a Farther Account of Foreign

Prisons and Hospitals with Additional Remarks on the Prisons of this Country Warrington: Printed by William Eyres; and Sold by T Cadell J Johnson and C Dilly in London; Third edition Appendix volume First edition 1784 - 2 volumes, large 4to., [viii, 508pp.] + [iv, 296pp.], half-titles present, illustrated with 39 finely engraved plates, many folding, (complete), some occasional old light waterstains to some leaves of Appendix volume, both volumes bound in later matching buckram with spines titled in gilt. A generally VG clean, large copy set of this scarce work, complete with the Appendix, which is usually lacking. (Printing and the Mind of Man, 224; Garrison and Morton 1598; Goldsmiths' 11625). John Howard (1726-90) - A philanthropist and social reformer, Howard was dedicated to prison reform and public health improvements. John Howard was born in Hackney, in east London in 1726, the son of a partner in an upholstery business. On his father's death in 1742, he inherited considerable wealth and settled on an estate in Bedfordshire. In 1773, he was appointed high sheriff of Bedfordshire and supervision of the county jail became of one his responsibilities. He was shocked by the conditions he found there and visited others in England, where the situation was no better. Jailers were not salaried but lived off fees paid by prisoners for food, bedding and other facilities. This system meant that poorer prisoners lived in terrible conditions. Many jailers demanded payment before prisoners were released, meaning that some stayed in jail even if they were innocent or had served their sentences. Howard's concerns led to two 1774 parliamentary acts - one abolished jailers' fees, the other enforced improvements in the system leading to better prisoner health. Howard, however, felt that the acts were not strictly obeyed. In 1775, he embarked on a tour of prisons in Europe visiting Scotland, Ireland, France, Holland, Flanders, some German states and Switzerland. He travelled on a similar route two years later, and in 1781 added Denmark, Sweden and Russia to the list. He visited Spain and Portugal in 1782. At a time when travel was uncomfortable and frequently dangerous, he travelled nearly 80,000 kilometres, making seven major journeys between 1775 and 1790, the first two of which are described in his book 'The State of Prisons in England and Wales. and an Account of Some Foreign Prisons'. While examining Russian military hospitals, Howard contracted typhus in Kherson, Ukraine, and died there on 20 January 1790. In 1866, the Howard League for Penal Reform was founded in his honour. De l'Administration des Finances de la France. 3-vol. set (Complete)

NP, n.p. 1784 - Octavo. VII, [1], CLIX, [1], 352, VII, [1], 536, VIII, 468pp. Original blond paper boards with gold lettering and borders on spines. Printer's device on each title page. Decorative head-, tailpieces. This work is Necker's attempt to defend his policy when he was Louis XVI's minister of finance. French statesman of Swiss birth, he sought to reduce public expenditures by such measures as abolishing unnecessary positions and by demanding larger payments from the private companies that had purchased the right to collect indirect taxes. He also attempted to introduce some reforms in the inequitable system of taxation. Because Necker financed French aid to the American colonies in their war of independence against England without raising taxes, he was regarded as a financial genius. As a result of Necker's loans, however, the public debt greatly increased. Necker anticipated one goal of the French Revolution by founding a number of provincial assemblies in which the three estates sat and voted together. These efforts aroused opposition from the privileged classes, who urged Louis XVI to dismiss his minister. As a result, he was dismissed from office on May 19, 1781. Necker retired to his Swiss estate, Coppet, where he wrote his famous treatise "De l'Administration des Finances de la France" in 1784. This treatise is complete with its large folding chart at rear of first volume. This work is a first edition, later issue, with an errata page in each volume. Some age wear on binding with shelf wear and rubbing along edges. Closed tears and minor chipping at head of spines. Slight abrasion along title labels. Minor rubbing on covers. Contemporary previous owner's name in ink on free front endpaper of first volume. Text in French. Binding in overall good, interior in very good to near fine condition. The Wreck of the Metta Catharina, Garbett G. & Skelton I. 1987 et The International Journal of Nautical Archaeology, Blackwell, Oxford 2010, vol. 39, no2, pp. 235-257 [23 pages (article)]). Very nice set. Complet set of the “best” editions. "Now, this book has quite an amazing story : In 1786, the Die Frau Metta Catherina brigantine left St. Petersbourg with a cargo of hemp and leather. The latter was no ordinary leather, but Russia leather its typical crosshatched grain, tanned with willow bark and curried with birch oil – what the New York Times magazine calls “a top-of-the-line luxury.” This leather was renown for its unique perfume, its resistance to water and, as it seems, for being insect-repellent. Captain Twedt who was the skipper of the Die Frau Metta Catherina back in 1786, was aiming to Genoa. But he never went beyond Plymouth Sound. Torn from her anchorage by a sudden storm, the Metta Catherina eventually sank to a depth of about 100 feet. “The vessel and cargo entirely lost, read a contemporary article; crew saved.” The cargo, including rolls of Russia leather, quietly remained underwater for the following 187 years, until some members of a local diving club discovered the ship. Brought to the surface, the rolls of leather proved to be somehow well preserved. Mr. Brown, who happened to commercialize them, stated : ''The hides on the outer edges of the rolls, as well as others that were disturbed as the vessel sank, had all deteriorated badly. The inner hides in most of the rolls were in a remarkable state of preservation, protected [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

A View of Karakakooa, in Owyhee

London:: W. and A. Strahan for G. Nicol,. 1784.. Very good overall. The attractive view of Karakakooa Bay on the island of Hawaii. The view depicts the Hawaiian paradise, the native settlements on the beach to the right, with the men rowing their canoes out to Cook's ships on the left. In the left foreground is a surfer paddling out on his board, the first engraving to show this. It is an idyllic, peaceful view, being Cook's first visit to the Island. On his return, forced by the necessity of repairs to the ships, he was perceived differently, and this was to be the site of his death. Plate mark 21 x 10 1/2", on folio paper (16 1/4 x 21 1/2"), plate 68 from the atlas accompanying Cook's third voyage, "A Voyage to the Pacific Ocean". Engraved by W. Byrne. A crisp impression, from the first edition of the book. Very slightly dusty.

An historical sketch of Goa, the metropolis of the Portuguese settlements in India. Madras (now Chennai), "printed for the Proprietor, by William Twigg, at the Gazette Press", 1831. Small narrow 4to in 2s (20 x 14 cm). With a folding engraved map of the city of Goa (23.5 x 26.5 cm). Contemporary half tree calf.

Graesse II, p. 286; Smith & Vining, American Geographers, 1784-1812, pp. 44-45. First (and only early English) edition of a detailed account of the city of Goa and its surroundings on the west coast of India, with a folding map of the city, engraved in Madras by W. Jervis. In addition to the general history and description of Goa, with an emphasis on the Portuguese colonists, the book includes a biography of the author; brief notes on the viceroys, governors, bishops and archbishops of Goa, from 1505 to the time of publication; information on the churches and religious orders; the islands and surroundings; and the people of various social classes. The book was printed for the proprietor of the Madras Gazette, apparently by subscription since it includes a list of about 250 subscribers. An essential reference for any study of the city and a primary source for the early 19th century. Cottineau de Kloguen was born in Nantes, probably before 1780, joined a Catholic religious order at an early age and spent most of his life abroad as a missionary. He lived in Baltimore, Maryland, for ten years and published a book there in 1806. He was in Bombay by 1827 and took charge of the Church of St Joseph in Colaba there when it was consecrated early in 1828. He died in 1830 at Madras, where the present book was published the following year. A Portuguese translation appeared in 1858.In very good condition and with generous margins, with a small tear in the folding map, the corner of one leaf torn off (not approaching the text) and a marginal stain in the last few leaves, with some damage at the foot of a few of those leaves. The binding is slightly rubbed and has a few chips along the edges, but is otherwise very good.

        [Man of Mangea]

London: circa, 1784. Proof engraving, 315 x 250 mm, laid down on old backing with manuscript notes in ink at bottom right; in good condition, framed. Proof before letters. Rare proof impression before letters of one of Webber's more striking portraits from Cook's third voyage, of the Cook Islands native Mou'rooa, who transferred into Cook's boat as the captain reconnoitred off Mangaia in March 1777. He was the only one to actually board the Resolution, 'tho not without evident signs of fear' (Beaglehole, Journals III, part 1, p. 79). As the ships did not land on Mangaia, the little information they gathered was derived from questions put to Mou'rooa by Omai. His ears were already pierced with the long slit in which he stuck a knife he was given as a gift or trade. Joppien and Smith note that this was one of the earliest from the series of engravings to be printed. They also note another proof impression of this plate in the National Library of Australia.

Hawkesworth was of course the writer who published Cook's first voyage (Cook was among many who disliked the results) In 1771 John Hawkesworth (c.1720-1773) was appointed by Lord Sandwich, then first Lord of the Admiralty, to revise and publish Cook's voyages to the Pacific. This was issued in three volumes, quarto, and covers narrative edited from Cook's journals of his first voyage, plus the voyages of several of his predecessors in the Southern oceans. James King (1750-1784) was the astronomer recommended by Dr Thomas Hornsby to accompany Cook's third voyage. He was appointed to the Resolution as second lieutenant and reportedly was ashore taking sights at the time of Cook's death in 1779. Following Cook's death he helped lead the ships on the remainder of the voyage, also completing Cook's account of the voyage prior to his early death from tuberculosis.

        Télephe en XII livres

Londres; et se trouve à Paris: Pissot, 1784. Octavo, woodcut vignette on title, early inscribed attribution 'Par Mr de Péméyea'; contemporary French quarter calf, paper boards a bit rubbed. First edition of this antiquarian utopia set in Minoan Crete, chronicling the reconciliation of all strata of society. The success of this novel by the Professeur d'éloquence at the Royal College at la Flèche led to several editions within a few years. Like so many books of the imaginary voyage tradition, this work takes Fénélon's Télémaque as its template, and has a similarly socialist distrust of private property and the evils of slavery.
