The Wreck of the Metta Catharina, Garbett G. & Skelton I. 1987 et The International Journal of Nautical Archaeology, Blackwell, Oxford 2010, vol. 39, no2, pp. 235-257 [23 pages (article)]). Very nice set. Complet set of the “best” editions. "Now, this book has quite an amazing story : In 1786, the Die Frau Metta Catherina brigantine left St. Petersbourg with a cargo of hemp and leather. The latter was no ordinary leather, but Russia leather its typical crosshatched grain, tanned with willow bark and curried with birch oil – what the New York Times magazine calls “a top-of-the-line luxury.” This leather was renown for its unique perfume, its resistance to water and, as it seems, for being insect-repellent. Captain Twedt who was the skipper of the Die Frau Metta Catherina back in 1786, was aiming to Genoa. But he never went beyond Plymouth Sound. Torn from her anchorage by a sudden storm, the Metta Catherina eventually sank to a depth of about 100 feet. “The vessel and cargo entirely lost, read a contemporary article; crew saved.” The cargo, including rolls of Russia leather, quietly remained underwater for the following 187 years, until some members of a local diving club discovered the ship. Brought to the surface, the rolls of leather proved to be somehow well preserved. Mr. Brown, who happened to commercialize them, stated : ''The hides on the outer edges of the rolls, as well as others that were disturbed as the vessel sank, had all deteriorated badly. The inner hides in most of the rolls were in a remarkable state of preservation, protected [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

A View of Karakakooa, in Owyhee

London:: W. and A. Strahan for G. Nicol,. 1784.. Very good overall. The attractive view of Karakakooa Bay on the island of Hawaii. The view depicts the Hawaiian paradise, the native settlements on the beach to the right, with the men rowing their canoes out to Cook's ships on the left. In the left foreground is a surfer paddling out on his board, the first engraving to show this. It is an idyllic, peaceful view, being Cook's first visit to the Island. On his return, forced by the necessity of repairs to the ships, he was perceived differently, and this was to be the site of his death. Plate mark 21 x 10 1/2", on folio paper (16 1/4 x 21 1/2"), plate 68 from the atlas accompanying Cook's third voyage, "A Voyage to the Pacific Ocean". Engraved by W. Byrne. A crisp impression, from the first edition of the book. Very slightly dusty.

An historical sketch of Goa, the metropolis of the Portuguese settlements in India. Madras (now Chennai), "printed for the Proprietor, by William Twigg, at the Gazette Press", 1831. Small narrow 4to in 2s (20 x 14 cm). With a folding engraved map of the city of Goa (23.5 x 26.5 cm). Contemporary half tree calf.

Graesse II, p. 286; Smith & Vining, American Geographers, 1784-1812, pp. 44-45. First (and only early English) edition of a detailed account of the city of Goa and its surroundings on the west coast of India, with a folding map of the city, engraved in Madras by W. Jervis. In addition to the general history and description of Goa, with an emphasis on the Portuguese colonists, the book includes a biography of the author; brief notes on the viceroys, governors, bishops and archbishops of Goa, from 1505 to the time of publication; information on the churches and religious orders; the islands and surroundings; and the people of various social classes. The book was printed for the proprietor of the Madras Gazette, apparently by subscription since it includes a list of about 250 subscribers. An essential reference for any study of the city and a primary source for the early 19th century. Cottineau de Kloguen was born in Nantes, probably before 1780, joined a Catholic religious order at an early age and spent most of his life abroad as a missionary. He lived in Baltimore, Maryland, for ten years and published a book there in 1806. He was in Bombay by 1827 and took charge of the Church of St Joseph in Colaba there when it was consecrated early in 1828. He died in 1830 at Madras, where the present book was published the following year. A Portuguese translation appeared in 1858.In very good condition and with generous margins, with a small tear in the folding map, the corner of one leaf torn off (not approaching the text) and a marginal stain in the last few leaves, with some damage at the foot of a few of those leaves. The binding is slightly rubbed and has a few chips along the edges, but is otherwise very good.

        [Man of Mangea]

London: circa, 1784. Proof engraving, 315 x 250 mm, laid down on old backing with manuscript notes in ink at bottom right; in good condition, framed. Proof before letters. Rare proof impression before letters of one of Webber's more striking portraits from Cook's third voyage, of the Cook Islands native Mou'rooa, who transferred into Cook's boat as the captain reconnoitred off Mangaia in March 1777. He was the only one to actually board the Resolution, 'tho not without evident signs of fear' (Beaglehole, Journals III, part 1, p. 79). As the ships did not land on Mangaia, the little information they gathered was derived from questions put to Mou'rooa by Omai. His ears were already pierced with the long slit in which he stuck a knife he was given as a gift or trade. Joppien and Smith note that this was one of the earliest from the series of engravings to be printed. They also note another proof impression of this plate in the National Library of Australia.

Portraits of Captain James King and Hawkesworth

London: Alex Hogg, n.d., but circa, 1784. Pair of engraved portraits on single sheet, 240 x 380 mm; in good condition. Cook's editors. Striking oval portraits of two men involved in the publication of Cook's voyages, from Anderson's Voyages of Captain Cook. Hawkesworth was of course the writer who published Cook's first voyage (Cook was among many who disliked the results) In 1771 John Hawkesworth (c.1720-1773) was appointed by Lord Sandwich, then first Lord of the Admiralty, to revise and publish Cook's voyages to the Pacific. This was issued in three volumes, quarto, and covers narrative edited from Cook's journals of his first voyage, plus the voyages of several of his predecessors in the Southern oceans. James King (1750-1784) was the astronomer recommended by Dr Thomas Hornsby to accompany Cook's third voyage. He was appointed to the Resolution as second lieutenant and reportedly was ashore taking sights at the time of Cook's death in 1779. Following Cook's death he helped lead the ships on the remainder of the voyage, also completing Cook's account of the voyage prior to his early death from tuberculosis.

        Télephe en XII livres

Londres; et se trouve à Paris: Pissot, 1784. Octavo, woodcut vignette on title, early inscribed attribution 'Par Mr de Péméyea'; contemporary French quarter calf, paper boards a bit rubbed. First edition of this antiquarian utopia set in Minoan Crete, chronicling the reconciliation of all strata of society. The success of this novel by the Professeur d'éloquence at the Royal College at la Flèche led to several editions within a few years. Like so many books of the imaginary voyage tradition, this work takes Fénélon's Télémaque as its template, and has a similarly socialist distrust of private property and the evils of slavery.

[Colour drawings of birds after Jacquin, Latham and Sparmann]. [Austria?], [ca. 1815]. Imperial 4to? (35×25.5 cm). 127 drawings of birds in black, white and colour gouaches on wove paper, each with the Latin name and occasionally also a brief note in German (in a German hand), each signed "E.G.F. fec." 19th-century grey half cloth.

Cf. Nissen, IVB 466 (Jacquin), 533 (Latham) and 889 (Sparmann). A series of colour bird drawings initialled by the unidentified artist, "E.G.F.", based on drawings in three published bird books: 14 after Joseph Franz von Jacquin, Beyträge zur Geschichte der Vögel (Vienna 1784); 69 after John Latham, Allgemeine Uebersicht der Vögel (Nürnberg 1792) and 44 after Anders Sparmann, Museum Carlsonianum (Stockholm 1786-1789). Below each drawing, the artist names the source he followed and gives the Latin name of the bird, usually the place of origin (in German) and occasionally an additional note in German. Most of the birds come from Africa, the Americas, the East Indies, New Guinea, Australia and New Zealand. Although nearly all the birds come from exotic lands, one has a note, "Augeblich in Oesterreich gevangen/Vielleicht ein bastard vom Lauarien Vogell und Grünling".Slightly browned, a few leaves with minor stains or foxing and a couple with small marginal tears, but still in good condition.

Le Roi Voyageur, ou Examen des Abus de l'Administration de la Lydie

T.P. Capel, Londres 1784 - Octavo, completely uncut, in fine condition except that the original marbled wrappers are loose and defective revealing French printed waste used in the binding. " First edition: the fictional discovery and translation of an ancient travel account used to mask a political satire. The London imprint is probably a disguise since the binding shows the use of French printed waste as strengthening. Published only five years before the revolution, the subterfuge is understandable. In one of the most disingenuous prefaces in the imaginary voyage tradition, the author proffers a wonderfully diverse raft of excuses as to the integrity of the edition, which apparently only exists as an imprecise manuscript in 'mauvais latin' - a problem which the eponymous editor gleefully compounds with his own revisions. The work itself turns out to be the history of Melés, King of Lydie, and chronicles his extensive travels through his own kingdom, which proved the happy notion that everything the king has learnt in the schools and salons is quite useless, and that it is only through travel and experience that the true nature of his realm will become apparent. Lydie is clearly France, and the catalogue of abuses that the king discovers have direct relevance to pre-revolutionary France: the impositions on trade, the systems of privilege and their rank abuse, and the censorship of dissent. [PRINTED CERTIFICATE, COMPLETED IN MANUSCRIPT, AUTHORIZING THE DISCHARGE OF A FRENCH COLONIAL SOLDIER]

[Mauritius. 1784].. Broadside, 10 x 13 inches. Old folds. Completed in manuscript, with wax seal and manuscript notations on verso. Worn and lightly soiled, with some minor separation and loss at folds. Good. Rare and ephemeral discharge paper for a French soldier serving on Ile de France - present-day Mauritius - in the Indian Ocean. The soldier's name in Jean Foutelle, and his age and physical description are given. The certificate is signed by the Lieutenant Colonel of the island's regiment, as well as the Lieutenant Governor. It is stamped with an official wax seal and several manuscript notations on the verso of the certificate describe later activities. The Dutch were the first Europeans to become interested in the island, taking possession in 1598. After exploiting the island's dense forests for a century and introducing the cultivation of sugar cane and cotton, in 1710 the Dutch abandoned the colony. The French soon claimed it as "Ile de France," and the island remained under the control of the French East India Company until 1767. During the long war between France and England at the beginning of the 19th century, Mauritius proved to be an important strategic naval base, and as a result the British took charge of the island in 1810, and the Treaty of Paris confirmed official British possession in 1814. It remained an important sugar producing colony, and in the 20th century agricultural production was expanded to include tea, rice, and other produce. Rare and interesting - a handsome piece of early Mauritius printing.

Mort Tragique du Capitaine Cook. le 15 Fevrier, 1779. Sur la cote d\'Owhy-hee l\'une des Isles Sandwich, decouverte par ce Navigateur. . . Dediee et Presentee a Monsieur De Bougainville Officier General de Terre et de Mer, de la Societe Royale de Londres et

Fine example of the rare Claude-Mathieu Fessard depiction of the death of Captain James Cook in Hawaii, during his third voyage. 1784. Paris. 350 mm x 300 mm. Separately issued. Minor foxing and overall toning. It includes a brief biography of Cook and description of his death engraved below the image as a caption, with a dedication to Bouganville. Cook\'s death in Hawaii is one of the iconic images of the 18th Century. Reproduced on numerous occasions, this is the original engraving from which most depictions of his death are taken. James Cook was killed in Hawaii on February 14, 1779. He and his men had spent the two months on the Big Island and been well received. They departed in early February 1779 but returned due to storms and the need for ship repairs. The second reception turned hostile, and tensions between the sailors and the natives increased. When Cook went ashore to investigate, a scuffle occurred and Cook was killed.Conflicting accounts regarding Cook\'s death circulated, as there was some confusion over whether Cook was facing the Hawaiians and whether he had ordered his men to shoot at the islanders. Lieutenant James King, who was on the voyage but did not witness the incident, reported that \"it was remarked that while he faced the natives, none of them had offered him any violence, but that having turned about, to give his orders to the boats, he was stabbed in the back, and fell with his face into the water.\"In the Webber view, Cook is situated slightly to the right of center and stands out as he is represented in lighter tones than the other sailors and natives. He faces his men and, while armed with a rifle, has his back to the islanders. Other views, such as the impressive work of George Carter, show Cook facing his attackers. The official French account of Cook\'s third voyage did not include an image of his death, although some copies did include an added \'Mort de Cook\' plate. The inclusion of Webber\'s scene in some English editions of the official account prompted Claude-Mathieu Fessard to create this fine example of the Webber view. The view is rare.References: Beddie 2615; Joppien & Smith 3.305A.

Les Voyages d'Amour, Fils de Venus

Paris: ches Theophile Barrois, 1784. Duodecimo; a fine copy in 19th-century French quarter red morocco, spine fading. First edition: a paradise on the Island of Venus. Evidently largely unknown to bibliographers, this charming work tells of the edenic Island of Venus, its natural beauty and exotic fauna completely unspoiled by any human influence. Using this as a backdrop, the work recounts the suitably idyllic adventures of Amour, the son of Venus, and his friends Morpheus, Eve and Zéphire. The short work ends with the parting wish: 'Si cette première Partie est reçue avec indulgence, on donnera la seconde.' The continuation, Voyages du Prince Amour followed in 1789 (although Barbier lists it as the second edition of this work).

Histoire de La Littérature D'Italie, Tirée De L'italien De Mr. Tiraboschi, et Abrégée Par Antoine Landi

1784. Berne, 1784. 5 volumes, uncut, in original printed wrappers. Good copies. pp. viii, 373 [374 blank]; 365 [366 blank]; 428; 536; 351 [352 blank], including half-title in each volume. (some discreet library stamps throughout). Tiraboschi (1731 - 1794) produced 13 volumes of his Storia della letterature italiana, covering the origin and development of literature and the sciences from Etruscan times to 1700; an erudite and learned scholar, he was a bit long-winded, and Landi"s abridgment has much to recommend it. See Bohn's Guinea Catalogue note to # 6452 "The Storia della Letteratura Italiana of the immortal Tiraboschi cannot fail to be admitted into every judicious library, however vast or confined. Italy boasts of few literary characters of a higher class, or of a more widely-diffused reputation than Tiraboschi. His diligence, his sagacity, his candour, his constant and patriotic exertions to do justice to the reputation of his countrymen, and to rescue departed worth from ill-merited oblivion, assign to him an exalted situation; a situation with the Poggios and Politians of former times, in the everlasting temple of Fame" (Dibdin) And: "In one country of Europe, and only in one, we find a national history so comprehensive as to leave uncommemorated no part of its literary labour. This was first executed by Tiraboschi, a Jesuit born at Bergamo, and in his later years, librarian of the Duke of Modena. It descends to the close of the seventeenth century. In full and clear exposition, in minute and exact investigation of facts, Tiraboschi has few superiors; and such is his good sense in criticism, that we must regret the sparing use he has made of it." The death of Captain James Cook by the Indians of O'Why'Ee one of the Sandwich Islands

London: printed by Sayer and Bennet for G. Carter, 1784. Original copperplate engraving measuring 465 x 600 mm. (plate size); very good copy of a strong impression, mounted and framed. George Carter's famous engraving of the death of Captain Cook. Although Webber's and Carter's depictions of the death scene are both scarce in the market place it is Carter's version that is especially notable for its rarity. Carter was not an eye-witness of the events in Hawaii, but his careful reconstruction is recognised as one of the finest depictions of the scene. He first painted the image in 1781, and helped to produce the engraving himself, in partnership with the print sellers Robert Sayer and George Bennett. The engraving was released a few weeks before the official voyage account, probably to capitalise on the fact that the official account did not include an image of Cook's death (although, if any, it is the Webber/Bartolozzi image that is more often seen actually bound into the Atlas volume). George Carter was an accomplished portrait and history painter and a regular exhibitor at the Royal Academy and the Society of Artists in London in the second half of the eighteenth century. The tragic events surrounding Cook's death on 14 February 1779 provided perfect material for this painter of historical subjects. His version, like Webber's, moved the scene of the massacre from the flat shoreline of Kaawaloa to the more dramatic setting of Kealakekua with the cliffs rising in the background. However, Carter's depiction is unlike Webber's in several significant ways. Most significantly, he shows Cook apparently ready to defend himself, his rifle raised like a club, but the image is also well known for its detailed portraiture, including several images of Hawaiians in the foreground and, especially, with beautifully realized images of the British sailors in their three boats. Carter's composition, as a result, not only has a heightened drama, but gives a visceral sense of conflict.

The Royal Society Medal (silver issue), in commemoration of Captain Cook

London: Royal Society, 1784. Silver medal, 43 mm. diameter; relief bust of Captain Cook on recto, full-length relief portrait of Fortune leaning on a column while resting her hand upon a rudder and globe on verso; very good ("extremely fine"). One of 322 silver specimens. The handsome silver issue of the Royal Society's formal memorial to the great navigator. Fellows of the Royal Society were entitled to a free bronze medal, while silver and gold issues were available by subscription only; some were reserved for presentation. L. Richard Smith (in The Royal Society Cook Medal, Sydney, 1982) has suggested a probable final minting figure of 22 gold, 322 silver and 577 bronze medals. An engraving of the medal was printed on the title-page of the second and third editions (and some copies of the first) of the official account. The commissioning of this medal was due above all else to the efforts of Sir Joseph Banks, who supervised 'the minting and distribution of the Royal Society Cook medal as a personal task coincident with the publication of the narrative of the tragic third voyage' (H.B. Carter, Sir Joseph Banks, 1988, p. 168). Cook's European reputation is borne out by several letters to Banks from the Continent requesting specimens of the medal, including one from Bougainville, who wrote in June 1785 to remind Banks that as a member since 1756 he felt entitled to one (see The Banks Letters, ed. W.R. Dawson, 1958, p. 122).
