De Necrosi Ossium adnotatio.

      - Moguntiae, Ex Typogr. Elect. Aul. Academ. priv. apud Joan. Jos. Alef. Haered. Haeffner, 1784, 8°, 20 pp., feiner Halbledereinband. Selten - Erste Ausgabe!

Paris 1784 - In the early 18th century, France turned away from imperial aspirations to focus on more personal and pleasurable pursuits. As political life and private morals relaxed, the change was mirrored by a new style in art, one that was more intimate, and decorative. Louis XIV's desire to glorify his dignity and the magnificence of France had been well served by the monumental and formal qualities of most seventeenth-century French art. But members of the succeeding court began to decorate their elegant homes in a lighter, more delicate manner. This new style has been known since the last century as "rococo," from the French word, rocaille, for rock and shell garden ornamentation. First emerging in the decorative arts, the rococo emphasized pastel colors, sinuous curves, and patterns based on flowers, vines, and shells. Painters turned to the sensual surface delights of color and light, and from weighty religious and historical subjects to more intimate scenes. The styles of representation range from the mildly stylized but naturalistic to the intensely fantastical, verging on the surreal. This style would soon give way to one that adhered to the austerity and democratic spirit of the revolutionaries at the end of the century. This original hand-colored engraving, “Plante de Volubilis” from the collection of fifty-nine engravings from Jacques Charton’s, “Collection de plantes etrangeres en fleurs, fruits, corail et coquillages” is a splendid example of the French decorative arts produced in Paris in 1784, just previous to the French Revolution. This engraving, most likely executed for porcelain designs, measures 17.25” x 11.25” and is in good condition with staining in the margins and corners and a light pencil marking on the left margin. This whimsical and dynamic engraving illustrates the Rhodochiton plant, also know as the Purple Bell Vine. Expertly detailed, this engraving shows the vine-like nature of the stems and the bell shape of the flowers. Finely colored, the vibrant green and pale purple create a delicate contrast against the cream colored background.

- - FIRST EDITION. An early monograph on bone necrosis, published the year before James Russell's treatise "A practical essay on a certain diseases of the bones termed necrosis" (1794) (Garrison & Morton No. 4307), which was one of the first attempts at a complete description of the condition. Weidmann was professor of surgery and obstetrics at Mainz. His book is remarkable for the splendid suite of copperplates with which it is illustrated. - - Blake 484; Engelmann 619; Hirsch/H. Bromatologia seu Doctrina de Esculentis et Potulentis.

      - Vienna, apud Rudolphum Graeffer, 1784, 8°, 428, (12) pp., gestochene Titelvignette, Portrait, marmorierter Kalbsledereinband der Zeit mit Buntpapiervorsätzen und reichlicher Rückenvergoldung; blasser St.a.Tit. Second Edition (first 1783) of what Simon considers: "An unusually interesting book of dietetics and cookery, describing the qualities of every possible kind of food and drink, plants, fungi, animals, fats and oils, condiments, wines and spirits, tea, coffee . etc." The text is in Latin, but the German nomenclature is included. Plenck is probably best remembered for his system of dermatological calssification (explained in his Doctrina de morbis cutaneis of 1776), but his talents were extensive, as can be witnessed in this less well-known work. - The portrait is of Giovanni Alessandro Brambilla, to whom the work is dedicated. This work was obviously also found unusually interesting when it was published, the second edition appearing just a year after the first and apparently being a direct reprint of the first with just the date changed - in effect a second issue, rather than a true second edition. Josephs Akademie in Wien. - Simon, Gastronomica 1204; Blake p. 355; Wellcome IV, p.402 (imperfect, portrait wanting); NUC records three locations. Hippopotame d'Afrique (hippo)

Paris 1784 - Jacques Charton Illustrated plate from Collection de plantes etrangeres en fleurs, fruits, corail et coquillages Paris: 1784 Hand-colored copperplate engraving 17” x 11”; 22 1/2” x 18” framed Framed in museum quality frame, mounted with archival materials with uv plexiglass In the early 18th century, France turned away from imperial aspirations to focus on more personal and pleasurable pursuits. These lovely engravings, most likely executed for porcelain designs, show a variety of exotic natural history subjects, mainly flowering plants and shells, accompanied by animals or insects, some with accompanying background vignettes. A MONSIEUR LE BAILLY DE SUFFREN QUE L'ON S'ATTENDOIT A VOIR A L'ISLE DE BOURBON AU RETOUR DE SE GLORIEUSE CAMPAGNE DE L'INDE [caption title]

Isle de France: Imprimerie Royale, 1784.. 4pp. on a single folded sheet. Quarto. Moderately worn with loss at fore edge and gutter margins, not affecting text. Lightly soiled and dampstained. Good. Early and unrecorded imprint from the colonial press at the French colony of Mauritius, also known as the Ile de France. The text comprises a poem in eleven stanzas by an anonymous soldier from the Regiment of the Isle de France, retired to the island of Bourbon. As most early imprints from Mauritius are official documents, this piece, as a work of local literature, is particularly interesting and desirable. The Dutch were the first Europeans to become interested in the island, taking possession in 1598. After exploiting the island's dense forests for a century and introducing the cultivation of sugar cane and cotton, in 1710 the Dutch abandoned the colony. The French soon claimed it as "Ile de France," and the island remained under the control of the French East India Company until 1767. During the long war between France and England at the beginning of the 19th century, Mauritius proved to be an important strategic naval base, and as a result the British took charge of the island in 1810, and the Treaty of Paris confirmed official British possession in 1814. It remained an important sugar producing colony, and in the 20th century agricultural production was expanded to include tea, rice, and other produce. Printing began on Mauritius in 1768. During the French period, until 1810, only about 400 imprints were produced, mostly in the form of official documents and newspapers, though there are also almanacs and a few other items. All are quite rare. No copies located in OCLC, and not recorded by Toussaint in his bibliography of Mauritius imprints.

OBSERVATIONS SUR LE GOUVERNEMENT ET LES LOIX DES ÉTATS-UNIS D'AMERIQUE.

Amsterdam: Chez J.F. Rosart, . 1784 - [2],213pp. [bound with:] [Jay, John]: EXTRAIT DU JOURNAL DE LECTURE, No. XXXVII. LETTRE CIRCULAIRE DU CONGRÈS DES ÉTATS UNIS D'AMÉRIQUE A SES CONSTITUANTS. [Paris. 1779?]. [2],26pp. [with:] [French Drama]: LA PAIX DE 1782 OU LE BOWL DE PUNCH DE MASTER OLIVER DREAMER. London. 1782. 47pp. First two titles 12mo., third title octavo. Contemporary calf, gilt, spine gilt with floral design. Binding rubbed and worn, chipped at head of spine. Internally fine. These three titles, printed in French but produced throughout Europe, all touch on the American Revolution and its aftermath. Mably's work consists of four letters written to John Adams, then the American Minister to Holland, on the government, laws, and political divisions in the United States. One of the letters deals specifically with Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, and Georgia. The second item is a circular letter from the Congress of the United States of America to their constituents on the subject of raising funds for the public debt, and is signed in print by John Jay, Sept. 13, 1779. Herein Jay outlines the fiscal state of the infant nation, in particular light of the growing war debt. In the United States the letter was ordered to be printed and distributed to the numerous parishes throughout the nation, to be read by the several ministers at the close of religious services. Jay implores the populace to maintain its resolve, and to be wary of insidious reports that the new government is failing. This French printing, likely produced to reassure the French shortly after they entered the Revolution on the American side, is extremely rare. OCLC locates only one copy, at the University of Pennsylvania. That copy, however, is printed in an octavo format, as opposed to the duodecimo format as in the present copy. The third title consists of a farcical French drama touching on the American Revolution. Mably: HOWES M5, "aa." SABIN 42923. Jay: SABIN 15515 (Philadelphia ed). OCLC 17381334. Drama: SABIN 58262.

        Beyträge zur Geschichte der Vögel.

Wien, C.F. Wappler, 1784. 4to (285 x 230mm). pp. (10), 45, (1), with 19 handcoloured engraved plates. 19th century cloth-backed marbled boards (spine a bit worn). An important work as it gives early descriptions of birds from the West Indies and the northern parts of South America. Emperor Franz Stephan, husband of Maria Theresia, founded the Imperial Zoological Gardens at the Schönbrunn Palace in 1752. In 1755 he sent an expedition to the West Indies and the northern parts of South America to collect plants and animals for the gardens at Schönbrunn and the menagerie. Nicolaus Joseph Jacquin was in charge of the expedition which lasted 4 years. During this trip he made notes on birds which were published by his son Joseph Franz Jacquin. 32 species are treated of which 25 come from the above mentioned regions. According to the descriptions in the book almost all the birds had been kept at the Schönbrunn menagerie. "Several new species are described. The plates are excellent for the period" (Zimmer I, 320). Only 2 plates are signed by the artist, one plate by A. Amon and one plate by J. Adam.//Anker 220.

Considerations on the Defects of Prisons and ... on a Plan of Reform

London, 1784. First Edition. Recent half leather. A very good copy; some dustiness to the half title. 8vo.,Paul was a philanthropist (DNB) who took a particular interest in prison reform. A fearsome epidemic of jail fever within his local jurisdiction - he had been appointed high sheriff of Gloucestershire in 1780 - drew his attention to the conditions prevailing in local jails. The book offered here is the result of his work as the head of a committee that had been appointed to seek the construction of a modern prison building. The DNB reports that he designed the new buildings for the penitentiary and work house according to theories set forth in the this book. Mindful of medical problems he saw to it that the new structure contained infirmaries and other improvements. It appears that Howard had the benefit of Paul's work for his masterpiece on prison reform that appeared some years later (DNB). DNB XV, 515 - 516.

Vache Marine. Et Peche avec la Varre (Marine Cow/Manatee)

This original hand-colored engraving, “Vache Marine. Et Peche avec la Varre” from the collection of fifty-nine engravings from Jacques Charton’s, “Collection de plantes etrangeres en fleurs, fruits, corail et coquillages” is a splendid example of the French decorative arts produced in Paris in 1784, just previous to the French Revolution. This engraving, most likely executed for porcelain designs, measures 17.25” x 11” and is in very good condition with light faint staining throughout. This engraving shows a marine cow or manatee resting on the banks in the foreground, while a boat with fishermen prepare to spear another in the water. This whimsical engraving is vibrantly colored with rich greens, light blue and pale orange-reds and is expertly detailed.

Isolated trivial spots of foxing, but A REALLY EXCELLENT SPECIMEN, with virtually no internal signs of use and in a very bright binding with only very superficial wear. This is a very uncommon and unusually large 18th century example of a double-book or "dos-à-dos" binding, a style that was particularly popular in England from about 1600-40, when it was used especially for small, embroidered devotional works. In a dos-à-dos (literally "back-to-back") binding, two volumes are joined so that they share a common back cover and so that the fore edge of one is adjacent to the spine of the other. The restrained decoration here does not attempt to replicate the typically more ornate 17th century embroidered designs. An especially lucky survival here is the original fragile cardboard pull-off case. It is not surprising that such an object comes from the illustrious library of Jean (also Hans) Fürstenberg, noted for fine bindings and excellent condition. (For more on Fürstenberg, see item #41.) Dos-à-dos bindings appear in the marketplace from time to time, but ABPC (back to 1975) and Americana Exchange (back to the 1930s) seem to list just one other German book bound this way, a 1768 Ulm Bible sold by Ketterer in 2010.

Bromatologia seu Doctrina de Esculentis et Potulentis.

. Vienna, apud Rudolphum Graeffer, 1784, 8°, 428, (12) pp., gestochene Titelvignette, Portrait, marmorierter Kalbsledereinband der Zeit mit Buntpapiervorsätzen und reichlicher Rückenvergoldung; blasser St.a.Tit.. Second Edition (first 1783) of what Simon considers: "An unusually interesting book of dietetics and cookery, describing the qualities of every possible kind of food and drink, plants, fungi, animals, fats and oils, condiments, wines and spirits, tea, coffee ... etc." The text is in Latin, but the German nomenclature is included.

Journal of the Senate of the State of New York, (Seventh Session, 1784)

New York: Printed by E. Holt, Printer to the State. 1784. First. First edition. Subtitle reads, "At their first Meeting of the Seventh Session, begun and holden at the City-Hall in the City of New York, on Tuesday, the sixth Day of January, 1784." Folio. Unbound and untrimmed as issued in folded sheets. Incomplete. Consists of pages 59-134, and pages 61-168: i.e., two distinct sets of separately paginated sheets, each set recording a unique account of the daily proceedings in March, April, and May of 1784. It thus appears that two printed accounts of the same proceedings: one "official," the other "secret," (not an uncommon practice at the time) are here mixed together. Scattered chipping to the page edges affecting the letterpress at the margins of only some of the outermost leaves of each set, else good or better. ESTC locates four copies of one edition only: "147,[1] pages." No variants are noted. Evans 18644, ESTC W33312. .
