"Antichita romane de'Tempi della Republica, ". Titelblatt : Römische Altertümer zu Zeiten der Republik.

Februari gegen 4.

Augsburg, Kaiserlich Franziskische Akademie, 1784.. Altkolorierter Kupferstich (Guckkasten), Bildausschnitt 25,5 x 41 cm, Blattgr. 31 x 43 cm..

De Walvischvangst met Veele Byzonderheden Daartoe Betrekkelyk (Many aspects of catching whales)

Petrus Conradi, 1784, Hardcover (Full Leather), Book Condition: Very Good Condition, Dust Jacket Condition: No Dust Jacket, First EditionAuthors uncredited, De Walvischvangst met Veele Byzonderheden Daartoe Betrekkelyk (Many aspects of catching whales), four volumes bound as one, Amsterdam and Harlingen: Petrus Conradi and Volkert van der Plaats, 1784-86. Quarto, first edition, pp. viii, 96; iv, 116; ii, 116; iv, 116, full brown calf with red morocco label on spine and blind-stamped decoration on both panels, 6 folding maps plus 15 engravings on copper plate. All text in Dutch. Originally issue in 4 wrappered parts, the present book comes in an attractive, later binding, leaves untrimmed with wide margins, with rubber stamps on all four title pages from a library in Antwerp. Plates include two sprawling views of high danger and excitement, painted by Hendrik Kobell and engraved by Mathias de Sallieth. Much of the artwork is uncredited. A plate by Didrik de Jong shows a polar-bear hunt gone horribly wrong, with the bear snacking on one of the hunters. Other plates depict natives of the north and their ways, as well as bird life. Maps show the Noordpool, Spitsbergen, a wildly inaccurate presentation of Greenland, the islands of Jan Mayen and Nova Zembla, and Iceland. Sabin 101231 quotes Barbier, to say the writing was based on the work of Cornelis Zordraker (or Zorgdrager), an early Dutch whaling commander, and edited by a Dr. Van der Plaats (see Barbier pp. 760-61 for a consideration of the later French edition of de Walvischvangst). The text gives the history of the industry, with charts on expenses and the catches. Volume 3 covers the people and wildlife of the northern latitudes, and Volume 4 deals with the herring fishery, with one of Kobell's frantically busy paintings offered on a folding plate. All in all this is an important primary documentation of northern whaling and fishing. Also see Tiele 104n and Allen 384. OCLC and KVK locate 6 copies in Europe, none in the U.S. Even the later editions rarely come to market, especially in complete form. Condition of this book: Covers lightly worn, sunned at spine; moderate soiling to edges, interior very good with only little foxing, inoffensive water stains to a few of the margins, images very good. Size: Quarto. Text is in Dutch. Text body is clean, and free from previous owner annotation, underlining and highlighting. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact. All edges clean, neat and free of foxing. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: 1-2 kilos. Category: Antiquarian & Rare; Holland; 18th century; Dutch Language; Fishing & Hunting. Papaya Tree

      - Daniel Carthidge The Figures of Several Plants both Exotic, & of British Produce England, 1784 Watercolor Pper size approximately 14 1/8” x 87/8”; 24” x 19” framed This exquisite botanical watercolor, from a collection of thirteen, by the British artist Daniel Carthidge were the original studies for a volume of engravings intended to illustrate the exotic crops including fruits, teas and spices cultivated in areas throughout the West Indies and American Colonies under British possession. This suite of watercolors, executed in 1784, depict trees and plants that the English used on a daily basis, most notably tea, coffee, cinnamon, pepper, and lemons. Yet while such things were imported and readily available in England, few citizens really had any notion of the actual appearance of such plants. Other watercolors represent species that were more obscure to the British, including papayas and pineapples, which generally could not last for the long trip to England from the colonies. Many of the imported spices were not only praised for flavor, but for medicinal attributes, such as cinnamon used as a stimulant and astringent, as well as a food preserver, and ginger for its digestive attributes and aiding in warding off colds. Even after England lost its most important colony, America, the British Empire remained vast in the last decades of the 18th century. Many English artists looked for inspiration in the exotic flora and fauna of the more distant colonies, and the British populace provided a ready and eagerly curious market for such images. Carthidge’s striking interpretations of these exotic images satisfied such public appetite for knowledge of the far away colonies, and won him great acclaim in the process. Representing a selection of the prototypes he personally created for an engraved publication, titled, The Figures of Several Plants both Exotics & of British Produce, this original watercolor renders abundantly clear the reasons for Carthidge’s success.

Geschichte des Fortgangs und Untergangs der Romischen Republik

Leipzig: M. G. Weidmanns,, 1784?-86. 4 volumes, octavo (204 × 116 mm). Contemporary German half tree calf, spines gilt banded at head and tail, red labels, marbled paper sides in emulation of tree calf, yellow edges, marbled endpapers. 6 folding engraved maps. Lengthy Latin inscription on preliminary blank of volume I (dated 1808). Remains of old library paper label on spine of volume I, bump to spine of volume II, otherwise an appealing set. First edition in German. "During 1782 and 1783 Ferguson helped found the Royal Society of Scotland. His three-volume History of the Progress and Termination of the Roman Republic, narrating the rise and fall of the republic as a story of civic virtue and its corruption, appeared in 1783. The book was warmly received in Scotland, where excerpts were published in the Caledonian Mercury and the Scots Magazine. It won praise from Edward Gibbon, and went through two more English-language editions in 1799 and 1813. In the mid-nineteenth century it was still favourably mentioned by John Stuart Mill and reissued in the United States, where Ferguson's spirited discussion of Rome's republican heyday appealed to two generations of readers. Two French translations appeared in Paris, in 1784?-91 and in 1803?-10. A German translation appeared in Leipzig in 1784?-6" (ODNB).

Paris, Imprimerie Royale, 1784.. (26,5 x 20,5 cm). (2) 66 S. Moderner Pappband im Stil der Zeit.. Erste Ausgabe. "This is the offical edition, printed at the King's private press in the Louvre" (D/K). - "In the spring of 1784 the King of France appointed this commission made up of members of the Academy of Sciences to investigate the claims of animal magnetism. He chose some of the most eminent men of science of his day. The chairman was Benjamin Franklin, a founding father of the United States of America, ambassador of that country to France, and a person highly knowledgeable in electricity and terrestrial magnetism. The commission's president was Antoine Laurent Lavoisier, a follower of Condillac and one of the most important chemists of the age. The secretary of the commission and editor of its report was the famous astronomer Jean Sylvain Bailly. The commission also included the director of the Academy of Sciences, Jean Baptiste Leroy, an investigator of electricity of some note.... The commission began its investigations on March 12, 1784, and published its report in August of that year. Both this commission and one made up of members of the Faculty of Medicine of Paris, appointed by the King at the same time, investigated animal magnetism as practiced by Charles D'Eslon, a disciple of Mesmer. D'Eslon wanted this official inquiry, while Mesmer strongly opposed it. By cooperating with the commissions, D'Eslon effectively removed himself from his teacher's fold. Although D'Eslon's theory of animal magnetism, as presented to the commission, was somewhat different from that of Mesmer, the commissioners did not seem to be bothered by that fact. They contended that theory made no difference to their mandate, which was to decide about the existence and utility of animal magnetism. Their conclusion was that they found no evidence for the existence of an animal magnetic fluid. They ascribed any cures or improvement of health that might occur through the application of animal magnetism to the action of 'imagination.' The report was very influential and became a center of a vigorous controversy which raged for a number of years, with pamphlets and books being written for and against its conclusions" (Crabtree). - Erstes und letztes Blatt etwas angestaubt, sonst sehr sauberes und breitrandiges Exemplar. - Crabtree 31; Duveen & Klickstein 223

1784. WINCKELMANN, Johann Joachim. Storia Delle Arti del Disegno. Translated by Carlo Fea. Three volumes. [4], xcvi, 451, [1]; 427, [1]; xii, 604 pp. With 128 plates, of which 1 is folding, 63 are full page and 64 are smaller engravings throughout the text. 4to., 265 x 186 mm, uniformly bound in contemporary Italian vellum over boards, gilt-lettering on tan title-labels on spines. Rome: Stamperia Pagliarini, 1783-1784. |~||~||~||~||~| Second Italian Edition, greatly enlarged textually and graphically. It was translated by Carlo Fea (1753-1834), with his interesting preface and extensive commentary. Fea's edition has become greatly esteemed for its precise and thoughtful notes, which were added contrary to the wishes of the author. In the preface, Fea states that he hopes Winckelmann, as a scholar, would understand his actions. This second edition adds Fea's personal essay Sulle Rovine di Roma ("Dissertation on the Ruins of Rome") in the third volume. The first Italian Edition was issued in two volumes of 762 pages and only18 full-page plates. This Italian edition of Winckelmann's masterpiece was an important publishing event; it was expanded to over 1600 pages and 128 illustrations. Fea's Italian edition made the conclusions reached by this formidable German art historian available to Italian scholars in their own language. A landmark in the study of Classical art, truly "an important book, sometimes called the first modern history of art" (Arntzen and Rainwater, H130). Carlo Fea (1752-1836) was an Italian archaeologist and librarian of the Biblioteca at the Villa Chigi. In 1800 he was appointed Commissario delle Antichità in 1800 by Pope Pius VII and in 1801 was appointed president of the Capitoline Museum. Fèa was responsible for the 1802 antiquities regulations that stimulated new archaeological investigations of major Roman monuments, including the Arch of Constintine, Arch of Septimus Severus and the Flavian ampitheater (Colosseum). He personally worked on the restoration of the Pantheon in 1804. He published a guide to the antiquities of Rome, Nouva descrizione de' monumenti antichi in 1819, which remains an important study of the time. His work on Etruscan vases, Storia dei vasi fittili, appeared in 1832. Occasional incidents of brown toning to leaves and/or insignificant spotting; overall a fine copy in attrractive contemporary Italian bindings. PROVENANCE: Marchese Giuseppe Arconati Visconti (1797-1883) with his crowned oval stamp at foot of title-page. Visconti was the owner of the famed Lombardian villa Castelazzo, designed by the Italian architect Giovanni Ruggeri and possessing the largest and most elaborate landscape gardens in Lombardy. (See: Egisto Bragaglia, Gli ex libris italiani, # 1835). Schlosser-Magnino 676. Cicognara 59. Vinet 1255.

The Royal Society Medal, in commemoration of Captain Cook.`

London: Royal Society, 1784. Silver medal, 43 mm. diameter; relief bust of Captain Cook on recto, full-length relief portrait of Fortune leaning on a column while resting her hand upon a rudder and globe on verso; very good ("extremely fine"). One of 322 silver specimens. The Royal Society's formal memorial to the great navigator. Fellows of the Royal Society were entitled to a free bronze medal, while silver and gold issues were available by subscription only; some were reserved for presentation. L. Richard Smith (in The Royal Society Cook Medal, Sydney, 1982) has suggested a probable final minting figure of 22 gold, 322 silver and 577 bronze medals. An engraving of the medal was printed on the title-page of the second and third editions (and some copies of the first) of the official account. The commissioning of this medal was due above all else to the efforts of Sir Joseph Banks, who supervised 'the minting and distribution of the Royal Society Cook medal as a personal task coincident with the publication of the narrative of the tragic third voyage' (H.B. Carter, Sir Joseph Banks, 1988, p. 168). Cook's European reputation is borne out by several letters to Banks from the Continent requesting specimens of the medal, including one from Bougainville, who wrote in June 1785 to remind Banks that as a member since 1756 he felt entitled to one (see The Banks Letters, ed. W.R. Dawson, 1958, p. 122).

[Gyldendals Teaterleksikon]. DBL(3) XIII, 263. Bibl. Danica I, 1081. Table Showing the Cubic Volume of all Varieties of Hewn Timber, with Dimension Calculations. & Royal Swedish Dimensions and Building Procedures for the year 1776

Sweden, 1784. [&] Kongel. Svenska Måtare och Wråkare Ordningen af år 1776. [Table Showing the Cubic Volume of all Varieties of Hewn Timber, with Dimension Calculations. & Royal Swedish Dimensions and Building Procedures for the year 1776.] Tryckt uti Kongl. Amiralitets-Tryckeriet, Carlscrona, 1783 & 1784 [Published by the Royal Admiralty Printing Office, Karlskrona, 1783 & 1784] 8vo. Two works in one purpose-made leather binding, five raised bands, label to spine, fold-over flap, hand sewn leather strap. 181 pages; 43 pages, respectively, plus 4 fold-out plates for illustration, printed on laid watermarked paper. Text is in Swedish. Ownership initials "J.H.D'A" to title page of Jakob Henrik d'Ailly (James Henry d'Ailly, 1789-1858), a leading shipbuilding engineer for the Swedish Royal Navy. Also the initials of his son, to front board and title page, "Aug. d'Ailly" Johan Christian August d'Ailly, (1822 Karlskrona - 1877 Stockholm). With an additional 23 page manuscript calculation table placed within, and manuscript calculations made to flyleaf. Age-toning and bowing to boards, otherwise very good condition, scarce eighteenth century shipbuilding directives. Owned and signed by two notable men, father and son, in the Swedish Navy, and accompanied by further manuscript timber measurement calculations, this volume provides a rare insight into early shipbuilding methods for galleons and sloops to be used in the mighty Swedish Navy then being augmented by Gustav III, King of Sweden. Both works are exceedingly scarce, with only a single copy of each known to be held by the National Library of Sweden. The first work consists of exacting timber calculations specific to shipbuilding, comprises 181 pages of charts, and concludes with a succinct explanation of the formulas used. The second work provides detailed instructions for shipbuilding, with sections on the keel, the prow, masts, crooked logs, how to bend timber, making beams, making knees for a galleon, straight timber, anchor logs, oak planks, brief notes on sloops and nails, so forth. The latter is 43 pages plus 3 charts unpaginated, and 4 folding illustrations showing how to cut and bend timber. The ownership inscription to the front board and to the title page "Aug. d'Ailly" are that of Major Johan Christian August d'Ailly (1822-1877) a naval engineer involved in the construction and design of vessels for the Swedish Navy. Fascinated by the early steam engine, he was sent away for three years, first to the Motala shipyard in 1846 where he studied machinery made at Gefle [the port of Gavle], then to Norrköping to study steam engines and iron ship construction. In 1848 he was granted an engineer officer's salary and was posted at the iron and metal workshop in Carlscrona. From 1857 to 1866 he was an instructor at the Navy's Fleet Engineering school, then at the Navy's Shipbuilding Institute. From 1862 to 1863 he was selected to travel to the United States to study 'Monitor' style ship design and construction under Swedish born John Ericsson. D'Ailly toured rolling mills, gun foundries, and several different ironclads under construction. He returned to Sweden in 1863 having completed the drawings of a Monitor-type ship. He became Director of marine engineering in 1867. The Danish Navy Ministry solicited his expertise in 1869 to make proposals for larger armored gunboats. d'Ailly became a member of the Naval Society in 1858, the a knight of the Royal Norwegian Order of St. Olav in 1864, a member of the Academy of War Sciences in 1866, a knight in the Order of the Polar Star in 1868, member of a few other chivalric orders, including several foreign orders. Johan Christian August was born in Karlskrona, the son of Colonel Jakob Henrik D'Ailly. The title page also bears the initials "J.H.D'A" - Colonel Jakob Henrik d'Ailly (1789-1858) [James Henry D'Ailly] - the original owner of the Swedish naval shipbuilding books, and father to the latter. The Colonel was made second-in-command of the engineering and construction for the Swedish Navy by the Admiralty. In the late seventeenth century, at the behest of Charles XI, the Swedish Royal Navy was entirely restructured; and, the recent war having demonstrated the unsuitability of Stockholm as a naval station, the construction of a new arsenal was begun at Karlskrona. After seventeen years of financial difficulties, the twofold enterprise was completed. At the death of Charles XI, Sweden could boast of a fleet of forty-three three-deckers, manned by 11,000 men and armed with 2,648 guns, and one of the finest arsenals in the world. Under the reign of King Gustav III, from 1771 to 1792, the Swedish Navy was enlarged to become one of the most formidable in Europe, and a grand naval victory was made. In 1790, with the Battle of Svensksund, Swedish naval forces defeated and devastated the Russian fleet, ending the Russo-Swedish War. Gustav III was personally leading his navy in the battle at sea, which is regarded as the greatest naval victory ever gained by the Swedish Navy. Karlskrona (Carlscrona) is a locality and the seat of Karlskrona Municipality, Blekinge County. It is Sweden's only baroque city and is host to Sweden's only remaining naval base and the headquarters of the Swedish Coast Guard. The city was founded in 1680 when the Royal Swedish Navy was relocated from the Stockholm area to the Trossö island, chosen for its strategic position and short sailing distances to the German and Baltic provinces. At the time Sweden was the dominant military power in the Baltic sea region, but needed a better strategic location against Denmark, since southern parts of Sweden had been conquered only a few decades before. The city grew quickly and by 1750 Karlskrona had about 10,000 inhabitants. The shipyard in Karlskrona was established almost at the same time as the city. It was a necessity because of the heavy losses the Swedish navy had suffered in 1659. In 1711, the shipyard was Sweden's largest industrial employer with 1,100 workers. The islet of Stumholmen was formerly property of the Navy and today it houses the National Naval Museum (Marinmuseum).. Very Good.

        Indian Fig
