Living in London a little more than a year after he signed the preliminary Treaty of Paris, Henry Laurens signs an interesting document relating to a suit filed against him in the South Carolina Court of Chancery

n.p., January 27, 1784. 7.25" x 9". "Manuscript Document Signed ""Henry Laurens,"" half-page, 7.25"" x 9"". [London], January 27, 1784. On watermarked laid paper. Light stains in blank lower portion. Docketed on verso. Fine condition. In full, ""Henry Laurens being duly sworn maketh Oath that his health still continues so very infirm that he has not been able to inspect & adjust his Accounts as Executor to the Estate of Elias Ball deceased, so far as to get ready to put in answer to the Bill filed against him in the Court of Chancery by, Joseph Sealy & Beulah his Wife. Henry Laurens. Sworn before ne this 27. Jany 1784. J. Mitchell J.P.""Henry Laurens was the Executor of the Estate of Elias Ball who had died in 1758. Ball's will directed that his estate be divided among his four children. When the division of the Estate finally took place in 1769, only two of Elias's children, Ann and Samuel, were alive. Laurens retained half of Ball's Estate for Samuel Ball who was still a minor. Samuel Ball, still a minor, married and shortly after. His widow Beulah Ball married Joseph Sealey and they claimed Samuel's half of the Estate. Laurens declined saying that according to Elias Ball's will, the whole Estate would now go to his sole surviving child, Mrs. Ann Ball Hunt. In December 1787, the South Carolina Court of Chancery decided in the case of Sealy & Wife, Executrix of Samuel Ball vs. Henry Laurens, Executor of Elias Ball, that Laurens ""pay over to the complainants, the one half of the estate of Elias Ball, to which hos son Samuel was, at the time of his death, and under the will of the said Elias Ball, his father, entitled..."" On verso of this document is the notation ""Filed 30th March 1787.""In a letter written by Laurens just four days earlier, to his friend John Delagaye dated, London, January 23, 1784, Laurens wrote ""I returned from Bath three Days ago in a very indifferent State of health, a violent Cold, & the Gout in my head..."" Hence, Laurens states in this document that ""his health still continues so very infirm...""Elected Minister to Holland by the Continental Congress on October 21, 1779, Henry Laurens sailed for his post early in 1780. He was captured on the voyage and held a prisoner in the Tower of London for 15 months. He was released on December 31, 1781, in exchange for Lord Cornwallis. Appointed one of the Peace Commissioners, Laurens signed the preliminary Treaty of Paris on November 30, 1782. He returned to the United States in August 1784. "

Geschichte meines Freundes Bernhard Ambrosius Rund. Von Christoph Bachmann.

Hamburg, Benjamin Gottlob Hoffmann 1784.. 3 Tle. in 1 Band. Mit gest. Frontispiz und gest. Titelvign. 172 S., 1 Bl., 156 S., 1 Bl., 110 S. HLdr. d. Zt. mit reicher Rückenverg. ADB XXX, 347; Hergemöller, Mann für Mann I, 1021. - Einband etwas wurmspurig, sonst recht gutes Exemplar!

        Flora Rossica.

      - Petropoli (St. Petersburg) 1784-1788. 2 volumes (bound in 1). Folio (286 x 451mm). pp. (6), viii, 80; (2),114, with handcoloured engraved frontispiece and 101 beautifully handcoloured engraved plates. Contemporary tree calf, gilt ornamented spine skilfully rebacked with red and green gilt lettered label, covers with Russian imperial arms gilt. The first great illustrated flora of Russia, initiated by Empress Catherine the Great. "Among many publications Flora Rossica was Pallas's most ambitious work, intended to reach 500 or 600 plates. Catherine II underwrote the costs of publication; but a change of ministers dried up the funds, and a second volume was abandoned" (Hunt, 672)."In 1767 Pallas was invited to work at the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences. He was elected ordinary academician and had the rank of acting state councilor. For more than forty years Pallas was associated exclusively with the development of Russian science. During his first years he studied nature and the peoples of the Russian empire, participating in the Academic expeditions of 1768-1774" (DSB).The beautifully handcoloured engraved frontispiece shows Catherine the Great seated on clouds surrounded by cherubs, one of whom is presenting a copy of the book. In her right hand Catherine is holding flowers. The 101 beautifully handcoloured engravings of flowering plants are by Karl Friederich Knappe. The nomenclature of the plants are in Latin and Russian. An exceptionally fine, large copy without any foxing.Hunt 672; Nissen BBI, 1482., [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Rudolf Gleichauf (1826 Hüfingen (Baden) - Karsruhe 1896). Pokal, nach Goethe,Rad

      - Raphael Winter (1784 München 1852). Der Löwe und der Affe. 1816 . Lithographie auf Papier. -- Technik: -- Lithographie auf Papier. unten rechts signiert: "R. Wintter fecit. -- [Attributes: Signed Copy]

[PRINTED CERTIFICATE, COMPLETED IN MANUSCRIPT, AUTHORIZING THE DISCHARGE OF A FRENCH COLONIAL SOLDIER]

[Mauritius, 1784. Old folds. Completed in manuscript, with wax seal and manuscript notations on verso. Worn and lightly soiled, with some minor separation and loss at folds. Good. Rare and ephemeral discharge paper for a French soldier serving on Ile de France - present-day Mauritius - in the Indian Ocean. The soldier's name in Jean Foutelle, and his age and physical description are given. The certificate is signed by the Lieutenant Colonel of the island's regiment, as well as the Lieutenant Governor. It is stamped with an official wax seal and several manuscript notations on the verso of the certificate describe later activities. The Dutch were the first Europeans to become interested in the island, taking possession in 1598. After exploiting the island's dense forests for a century and introducing the cultivation of sugar cane and cotton, in 1710 the Dutch abandoned the colony. The French soon claimed it as "Ile de France," and the island remained under the control of the French East India Company until 1767. During the long war between France and England at the beginning of the 19th century, Mauritius proved to be an important strategic naval base, and as a result the British took charge of the island in 1810, and the Treaty of Paris confirmed official British possession in 1814. It remained an important sugar producing colony, and in the 20th century agricultural production was expanded to include tea, rice, and other produce. Rare and interesting - a handsome piece of early Mauritius printing.

ACTS AND LAWS OF THE STATE OF CONNECTICUT, IN AMERICA

New London: Printed by Timothy Green: 1784-1786.. [2],6,8,265,266-311,309-346pp. Folio. Contemporary sheep. Hinges expertly repaired. Minor marginal worming in first two leaves, not affecting images or text, light scattered foxing, contents otherwise very good. Contemporary ink annotations throughout; early 19th-century inscriptions on front endpapers. About very good. Early acts and laws of the state of Connecticut, printed with Connecticut's colonial charter and the Articles of Confederation. The first section (through page 265), issued with a separate titlepage, is the second edition of the text, printed by Timothy Green in New London, and may have been printed in 1785 or later, according to Evans. The final three sections, of which the first and third were printed in Hartford by Hudson and Goodwin, are the first and official issues. ^The present copy of ACTS... comes first from the collection Samuel Huntington, signer of the Declaration of Independence and governor of Connecticut (1786-1796); and later John Turner Wait (1811-99), a prominent attorney from Norwich who served as a Republican representative from Connecticut in Congress from 1876 to 1887. The front free endpaper bears the following inscriptions: "Sam. Huntington (former Governor of the State) Statute Law Book. John Turner Waite [sic] June 24. 1837. Norwich Conn." Only Huntington's name would seem to be in his hand. Huntington (1731-1796) was a signer of the Declaration of Independence and the popular third governor of the state of Connecticut. His narrative provides an interesting and personal perspective on the embassy to Beijing.De Guignes was the son of the distinguished sinologist Joseph de Guignes, and a correspondent for the Académie des Sciences and the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres. He authored the important dictionary Dictionnaire Chinois-Français et Latin (1813).Spine of atlas volume slightly damaged. Very good set.

1784 - 4pp. on a single folded sheet. Quarto. Moderately worn with loss at fore edge and gutter margins, not affecting text. Lightly soiled and dampstained. Early and unrecorded imprint from the colonial press at the French colony of Mauritius, also known as the Ile de France. The text comprises a poem in eleven stanzas by an anonymous soldier from the Regiment of the Isle de France, retired to the island of Bourbon. As most early imprints from Mauritius are official documents, this piece, as a work of local literature, is particularly interesting and desirable. The Dutch were the first Europeans to become interested in the island, taking possession in 1598. After exploiting the island's dense forests for a century and introducing the cultivation of sugar cane and cotton, the Dutch abandoned the colony in 1710. Printing began on Mauritius in 1768. During the French period, until 1810, only about 400 imprints were produced, mostly in the form of official documents and newspapers, though there are also almanacs and a few other items. All are quite rare. No copies located in OCLC, and not recorded by Toussaint in his bibliography of Mauritius imprints.

Fine. S.n., à Amsterdam 1784, 4 parties en 2 Vol. in-8 (12,5x25cm), LVI, 274pp. ; 301pp. et 252pp. ; 208pp., relié. - First Edition. Each part has its special title page. Full brown calf marbled time. Smooth back wheels with ornate tail and head. Piece of red morocco, and volume number of black morocco. Head cover of Volume I partly missing, with a hitch; that of Volume II with a lack in upper joint. Upper joint of Volume I open; that of Volume II opened the first three boxes. Friction. Corners bumped. Baron de Tott, a French officer stationed in Turkey (attache at Constantinople, then ambassador in Crimea general inpecteur Levant) lived 23 years among the Turks. This book is the testimony, and made his memoirs, he tells both the board of the Baron de Tott and is undoubtedly the first book to give an objective picture of the Turkish nation and Turkish. From his preface, the author, after considerations on the influence of climate on the psychology of peoples (reference to Montesquieu) affirms the importance of knowing and speaking the language of a people, and the need to keep its European bias to describe the manners and institutions of the Turks, which had never been done; that is why we find in this book a wealth of knowledge and new information on the Turks and Tartars; in particular, the many dialogues between the Baron and some lords are particularly relevant for understanding the psychology and the Ottoman culture. Buffer Chateau de la Roche-Guyon. Library. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate. Contact us for any information! - [FRENCH VERSION FOLLOWS] Edition originale.

First Edition. Pechmeja's best-selling prose poem, published anonymously under the patronage of one Madame de Beauvau, presumably the Marquise de Boufflers. The work enjoyed both enthusiastic and scathing reviews from the most celebrated literary figures of the time. Readers admired the work's literary beauty and its touching description of friendship, while others found fault with the moral message (socialist in the modern sense). Among the most notable Télephe detractors was the author Jean-François de la Harpe, who wrote "[The author] seems, like Rousseau, to make a crime out of private property, without which no society could exist. He doesn't want children to inherit their fathers' fortunes, as if inheritance wasn't a natural right, and as if the fathers themselves didn't work for the sake of their children" (my translation). Others, including the relatively enthusiastic reviewer the Baron von Grimm, were nonplussed by Pechmeja's dour description of the fate of man and the injustices of oppression, maintaining that while virtue must always be exercised, little happiness can ultimately be experienced even with the purest intentions (my paraphrase of Michaud and Grimm). Grimm rejects comparisons made to Fénelon's novel Les Aventures de Télemaque (1699), saying that if Marmontel's Les Incas (1747) is the Télemaque for the age of the encyclopedia, then Télephe is the Télemaque for economists. Within three weeks of publication, sales had dropped dramatically and while the book was reprinted once in the 1790s and subsequently translated into English and German, Télephe never re-experienced its initial popularity. Santos M.
