The Royal Society Medal, in commemoration of Captain Cook. Obverse: Uniformed bust of James Cook. Reverse: Fortune leaning upon a column, holding a rudder on a globe

London: Royal Society, 1784. Bronze medal, 43 mm. diameter, relief bust of Captain Cook on recto, full-length relief portrait of Fortune leaning on a column while resting her hand upon a rudder which is affixed to a globe on verso; in excellent condition ("about extremely fine"). The Royal Society's formal memorial to the great navigator: one of 577 bronze specimens. Fellows of the Royal Society were entitled to a free bronze medal, while silver and gold issues were available by subscription only; some were reserved for presentation. L. Richard Smith (The Royal Society Cook Medal, Sydney, 1982) has suggested a probable final minting figure of 22 gold, 322 silver and 577 bronze medals. An engraving of the medal was printed on the title-page of the second and third editions (and some copies of the first) of the official account. The commissioning of this medal was due above all else to the efforts of Sir Joseph Banks, who supervised 'the minting and distribution of the Royal Society Cook medal as a personal task coincident with the publication of the narrative of the tragic third voyage' (H.B. Carter, Sir Joseph Banks, 1988, p. 168). Cook's European reputation is borne out by several letters to Banks from the Continent requesting specimens of the medal, including one from Bougainville, who wrote in June 1785 to remind Banks that as a member since 1756 he felt entitled to one (see The Banks Letters, ed. W.R. Dawson, 1958, p. 122).         Annals of Agriculture, and other useful Arts. Collected and Published by Arthur Young, Esq. F.R.S. [A consecutive run from vol. 1-39; 1784-1803]

Bury St. Edmunds: Printed for the Editor, by J. Rackham, 1784-1803. 39 vols., numerous engraved plates, from the library of the Royal Agricultural Society of England with their bookplate, uniformly bound in brown buckram, a couple loose gatherings but overall a very good set. Young wrote many of the articles in the Annals himself, it was a labour of love and exhibited his belief in the importance of agriculture and the benefits of pursuing improvements. "It was intended, among other things, to put before the public the views and experience of the foremost agriculturists, but Young was bitterly disappointed in its sales." (ODNB). Contributors included King George III, writing under the name of "Ralph Robinson", and he had extensive correspondences with George Washington, who's library contained thirty-one volumes of the periodical ranging from 1784 to 1798. This periodical was continued until 1815 when Young's eyesight failed.

An Authentic Narrative of a Voyage performed by Captain Cook and Captain Clerke, in His Majesty's Ships Resolution and Discovery. including a faithful Account of all their Discoveries, and the unfortunate Death of Captain Cook. The Third Edition

      G. Robinson, J. Sewell; and J. Debrett, London 1784 - Two volumes, octavo, with a folding chart and 21 engraved plates, bound with half-titles and directions for placing the cuts; a very good copy in twentieth-century red morocco, gilt. A most attractive set of this uncommon third edition of an important account of Cook's third voyage written by the assistant surgeon Ellis: 'an important supplement to the official account' (Forbes).Ellis, surgeon's mate and talented amateur artist, sailed first on the Discovery and later on the Resolution. During the voyage he was esteemed by Captain Clerke as a 'very worthy young man'. On his return he was in financial straits and, despite the prohibition by the Admiralty of the publication of any unauthorised account of the voyage, sold his narrative to a London publisher for fifty guineas. It was published over his name, and was thus the first account of the expedition to acknowledge its authorship, earning the condemnation of Sir Joseph Banks, who wrote to him in January 1782 that 'I fear it will not in future be in my power to do what it might have been, had you asked and followed my advice'. Ellis died in 1785 after a fall from the main mast of a ship lying at Ostend.Ellis' narrative includes a chapter devoted to their visit to Van Diemen's Land in January 1777, in the course of which Ellis painted a famous watercolour view of Adventure Bay, now in the National Library of Australia. There is much valuable information on Alaska, the Northwest Coast, and Hawaii, and the attractive engraved plates, after the author's drawings, include eight of Hawaii, two of Alaska, and three of the Northwest Coast. The plates show Ellis to have been a talented amateur artist, and represent a significant and very early contribution to the graphic record of the voyage. This third edition is quite rare, and Forbes was only able to locate some six copies internationally. Testament to its rarity is the fact that it is in neither of the catalogues of the Hill nor the Kroepelien collections of voyage books. London: J. Scatchard and J. Whitaker; and J. Fielding. 1784. 8vo., engraved portrait frontispiece, 12 engraved plates of 'bills of fare', xx + 459 + (1)pp., with advertisements on verso of final leaf, portrait slightly offset, contemporary sheep, neatly and sympathetically rebacked with gilt lines and old label. A very good copy. Cagle 676. Maclean p.50. Oxford p.114n. This edition not in Vicaire or Bitting. First published in 1783, this seems to have become a popular work for at least 30 years. (It was reprinted regularly until 1811). John Farley (1755/6 - 1827) was the principal cook at the famous London Tavern in Bishopsgate, which had been rebuilt by William Jupp and William Newton following its destruction by fire in 1765. It was renowned for the excellent meals provided in its dining-room, which could accommodate 355 people. The East India Company used to give its dinners there. Farley's book starts off with freshness and enthusiasm, suggesting that it was filling a cookery lacuna. 'Cookery, like every other art, has been moving forward to perfection by slow degrees;' suggests the author, 'and, though the cooks of the last century boasted of having brought it to the highest pitch it could bear, yet we find that daily improvements are still making therein, which must be the case of every art depending on fancy and taste: and though there are so many books of this kind already published, that one would hardly think there could be occasion for another; yet we flatter ourselves, that the readers of this work will find, from a candid perusal, and an impartial comparison, that our pretensions to the favours of the public are not ill founded'. [Preface]. In fact The London Art of Cookery> was largely fraudulent. It was written by a hack and plagiarised from the well known books of Hannah Glasse and Elizabeth Raffald. 'Farley's claim to fame has rested solely on his cookery book, although this is now known to be the work of a hack writer, Richard Johnson. Ninety per cent of The London Art of Cookery> was compiled from the two culinary best-sellers of the eighteenth century, without ever acknowledging his female sources. These were Hannah Glasse's The Art of Cookery Made Plain and Easy> (first published 1747) and Elizabeth Raffald's The Experienced English Housekeeper> (first published 1769). The remaining 10 per cent of Farley's book came from several other eighteenth-century cookery books. Copyright laws did not cover the field at that time and other contemporary cookery writers borrowed material. Johnson appears not only to have used two-thirds of Glasse's book and half of Raffald's to compile Farley's book, but his copying technique involved changing the first and last lines of each recipe without seemingly improving the original text to any marked degree. His selection of excellent and often workable recipes, however, may well account for the book's popularity'. [Fiona Lucraft in ODNB].

First Edition. Boards. Near Fine. First Edition. 480 pages. 4to. (7 3/5 inches x 10 inches) Recent 3/4 leather over marbled boards. Bright and clean internally, with very occasional spotting. We offer the entire Volume XXV [25] (July-December 1784) of Observations sur La Physique, Sur L'Histoire Naturelle et sur les Arts, Avec des Planches en Taille-Douce Dediees A Mgr. Le Comte D'Artois; Par M. l'Abbe Rozier, M. J. A. Mongez. The article by Meusnier is on pp. 39-47. INCLUDES a followup-article pages 48-69. Text in French. Boards. In 1783 Joseph Michel and Jacques Etienne Montgolfier constructed a full sized hot air balloon and demonstrated it for King Louis XVI - one of the very first balloon ascensions. A detailed report was made 'immediately after the attempt with the aerostatic machine' and signed by members of the Academie de Sciences Francaise. The machine was 70 feet high, and stayed up for twenty to twenty five minutes. "This first passenger flight was a spectacular success." Other Frenchmen Jacques Alexandre Cesar Charles and Pilatre de Rozier quickly built variations - some successful, some tragic. The only real control these pioneering balloonists had was buoyancy - how far up or down they soared. Steering was a mighty wish, but the wind was the real master without active steering control coupled with propulsion. Propulsion and control experiments quickly became the rage, including gunpowder charges, movable wings, riggings of sails, rotating screws, and oarsmen with silk covered oars. None worked very well. Enter Jean Baptiste Meusnier, who on leave of absence from his work as a military engineer at the Cherbourg harborworks was fascinated by this new field, "aerostation". After some study, on December 1783 he read before the Academy the paper offered here, the first published on these "machines", and the next month was elected a full member, immediately appointed to a committee on aerostation along with Lavoisier, Berthollet, and Codorcet. The results of his work on this committee were presented ina follow-on report read in November 1784 which included a theory and detailed construction plans for dirigible balloons. Although it "led to no practical results at the time", the new work was important and pioneering. Some of his ideas were tested by the Roberts brothers who flew a dirigible shaped balloon for seven hours during 1784, but the real test of the designs really required a means of propulsion that wouldn't exist for nearly 100 years - a small, lightweight engine. As with many innovators and futurists, Meusnier was well ahead of the technology his time afforded. Meusnier unfortunately died before he could test out his own theories. Other articles in the volume include work by Franz Karl Achard ("sur les altérations que le feu de fusion fait éprouver à la terre des végétaux, mêlée avec les autres terres pures" and "sur la vitrification de la terre alumineuse mêlée en proportions differentes & connues avec des sels" and one other), chemist M. Pelletier on salts, an article by Cavallo on an air pump, de Fouchy on measuring densities of the atmosphere, an article by Woulfe "nouveau procede pour faire l'ether nitreux", experiments on the air by cavendish, etc. etc. Beautifully engraved plates accompany some articles. The title of this paper translates to: "On the balance of aerostatic machines, on different ways to move them up and down, and especially on that of executing these maneuvers without throwing ballast and without losing inflammable air, providing in particular the ball capacity , for containing atmospheric air" and is a pioneering work on the subject. See "The Zeppelin Story" by W. Robert Nitske (A.S. Barnes & Company, 1977) and DSB IX, pp. 342-44 for more details.

Tablas Modernas, de la situacion que tienen

Barcelona: En la Imprenta de Bernardo Pla, 1784. Hardcover. Very Good. 4to [20 x 14.5 cm]. (3) ff., 80 pp., 31 pp., (1) p. errata. Quarter bound in vellum, marbled paper over boards, title stamped in black on spine. Minor staining, soiling and scuffing to spine and boards, minor staining on a few leaves, contemporary ownership inscription on front flyleaf ('Benedictus Villar'), internally quite clean. Very rare first complete edition (after the 1781 Havana edition) of an early Spanish-language pilot guide on the navigation of the Antilles, Caribbean, Tierra Firme, and Gulf of Mexico, including detailed information on the location of the reefs, sounds, bays, channels, ports, and inlets of the southern United States ranging from south Texas, to New Orleans, along the entire Florida peninsula, and as far north as Charleston. For his Tablas Modernas José de San Martín Suárez collected from the best published and unpublished sources latitude and longitude data for nearly 2000 precise locations across the Spanish Main with the expectation that such information might lead to safer piloting and to the construction of more accurate charts and maps of the region. That the volume was conceived as a military aid seems clear: As Naval Lieutenant and Piloto Mayór de Derotas of the Havana fleet, San Martín Suárez was helped by his First and Second Pilots and directed in this cartographic task by José Solano y Bote (1726-1806), Lieutenant General of the Royal Armada in Havana. Solano distinguished himself at the Siege of Pensacola in March of 1781 - the year that these Tablas Modernas were first published - by coming to the aid of Bernardo de Gálvez (1746-86) in the Spanish push to take British West Florida. The book is a fascinating record of the breadth of Spanish navigational intelligence at the time of this offensive, and the volume's rarity is perhaps best explained by the imperative to keep such information secret from British and other naval powers. Indeed, by the time this 1784 expanded Barcelona edition was published, Spanish control of the Gulf Coast had been formalized by the Treaty of Paris (1783), and new hostilities in the region were developing between The Untied States and Spain, this enmity only subsiding with Pinckney's Treaty in 1795. The Tablas Modernas, quite apart from its status as state secret, is fascinating as a record of the early Spanish and Native American toponyms of the American South (and elsewhere), many now vanished from memory: For every 'Misisipi' there is a 'Rio Cebet', for every 'Tampa' a 'Queynak'. San Martín Suárez's reckoning of longitude is technologically up to date, with some measurement apparently having been taken using a marine chronometer ('relox marino'). Sinibaldo Mas (1735-1806), a pilot and naval officer in Barcelona, praising the work's usefulness and lamenting its rarity (he could find but one copy of the 1781 Havana edition), expanded the text by the addition of extensive tables showing the length in nautical miles for degrees of latitude. In 1787 San Martín Suárez published a map ("Mapa y Plano del Seno Mexicano") incorporating many of the measurements from his Tablas Modernas. In 1826 Alexander von Humbolt remarked in this Essai politique sûr l'île de Cuba that in this map San Martín Suárez had provided an incorrect longitude for Havana, causing "a great number of shipwrecks" (p. xvii). OCLC locates just one U.S. copy of this 1784 edition, at the John Carter Brown Library. We have found only copy of the 1781 Havana copy: Universidad de la Laguna in Tenerife. *Medina BHA 5101; Palau 293078

"Prima edizione". Cfr. Boffito, p. 96 - Brockett, 2482 cita solo l?'edizione in francese. Esempl. su carta distinta, ben conservato.

I: [8], clx, 116, xiv, [2], 264 pp. II: viii, [2], 268, xxxii, [2], 242 (pp. 241/42 misbound), [16] pp. III: xvi, 144 pp.. 1784?-88 First edition of a landmark collection of variant readings of the Old Testament, assembled by an Italian Christian Hebraist who taught Oriental languages at the University of Parma. Synthesizing typographical, bibliographical, and textual scholarship, De Rossi brought together more findings from both Masoretic manuscripts and old printed editions than anyone had before him; and the result was printed by Bodoni in double columns within wide margins using Hebrew, roman, and italic types. The first four books close with Specimen ineditae et hexaplaris Bibliorum versionis Syro-Estranghelae cum Simplici atque utriusque fontibus Graeco et Hebraeo collatae cum duplici lat. vers. ac notis, and the final volume adds the Scholia critica in V.T. libros seu supplementa ad varias sacri textus lectiones. Provenance: Bookplate of the Rev. Dr. Samuel Farmar Jarvis, historian and author of A Discourse on the Religion of the Indian Tribes of North America, The Colonies of Heaven, and A Chronological Introduction to the History of the Church. Binding on vols. I?-IV: Contemporary calf, covers framed and panelled in blind rolls with original leather cracked, chipping, and darkened (III?-IV especially severely); rebacked, spines with gilt-stamped title, gilt-dotted raised bands, and gilt-stamped compartment decorations. Hinges (inside) reinforced. Binding on the Scholia: Recent, full period-style calf framed and panelled in blind rolls; spine with gilt-stamped title, gilt-dotted raised bands, and gilt-stamped compartment decorations. All title-pages with very old institutional rubber-stamps; early portions of vol. I with lightly pencilled annotations and bracketing, and vol. II with small pencilled marks of emphasis. Old soft corner creases or mild cockling variously throughout to vols. I?-IV and, where these things (or a natural paper flaw) are most notable, a grey soil has entered at the loose or open places to mark the margins at their edges. Otherwise, scattered light foxing, golden, not brown, and the occasional old spill (e.g., I Samuel) or smudge only. Not "fresh" — but substantial, impressive, wide-margined, and with its lovely typography still lovely.
