        [PRINTED CERTIFICATE, COMPLETED IN MANUSCRIPT, AUTHORIZING THE DISCHARGE OF A FRENCH COLONIAL SOLDIER]

      [Mauritius, 1784. Old folds. Completed in manuscript, with wax seal and manuscript notations on verso. Worn and lightly soiled, with some minor separation and loss at folds. Good. Rare and ephemeral discharge paper for a French soldier serving on Ile de France - present-day Mauritius - in the Indian Ocean. The soldier's name in Jean Foutelle, and his age and physical description are given. The certificate is signed by the Lieutenant Colonel of the island's regiment, as well as the Lieutenant Governor. It is stamped with an official wax seal and several manuscript notations on the verso of the certificate describe later activities. The Dutch were the first Europeans to become interested in the island, taking possession in 1598. After exploiting the island's dense forests for a century and introducing the cultivation of sugar cane and cotton, in 1710 the Dutch abandoned the colony. The French soon claimed it as "Ile de France," and the island remained under the control of the French East India Company until 1767. During the long war between France and England at the beginning of the 19th century, Mauritius proved to be an important strategic naval base, and as a result the British took charge of the island in 1810, and the Treaty of Paris confirmed official British possession in 1814. It remained an important sugar producing colony, and in the 20th century agricultural production was expanded to include tea, rice, and other produce. Rare and interesting - a handsome piece of early Mauritius printing.

He gathered them from manuscripts in the homes of the gentry and tune books of harpers and fiddlers; some were sent to him by his numerous correspondents and some he noted from oral tradition... Jones was also the first to print Welsh words to Welsh folksongs." Owain Edwards/Phyllis Kinney in Grove Music Online.

        ACTS AND LAWS OF THE STATE OF CONNECTICUT, IN AMERICA

      New London: Printed by Timothy Green: 1784-1786.. [2],6,8,265,266-311,309-346pp. Folio. Contemporary sheep. Hinges expertly repaired. Minor marginal worming in first two leaves, not affecting images or text, light scattered foxing, contents otherwise very good. Contemporary ink annotations throughout; early 19th-century inscriptions on front endpapers. About very good. Early acts and laws of the state of Connecticut, printed with Connecticut's colonial charter and the Articles of Confederation. The first section (through page 265), issued with a separate titlepage, is the second edition of the text, printed by Timothy Green in New London, and may have been printed in 1785 or later, according to Evans. The final three sections, of which the first and third were printed in Hartford by Hudson and Goodwin, are the first and official issues. ^The present copy of ACTS... comes first from the collection Samuel Huntington, signer of the Declaration of Independence and governor of Connecticut (1786-1796); and later John Turner Wait (1811-99), a prominent attorney from Norwich who served as a Republican representative from Connecticut in Congress from 1876 to 1887. The front free endpaper bears the following inscriptions: "Sam. Huntington (former Governor of the State) Statute Law Book. John Turner Waite [sic] June 24. 1837. Norwich Conn." Only Huntington's name would seem to be in his hand. Huntington (1731-1796) was a signer of the Declaration of Independence and the popular third governor of the state of Connecticut. Wagenschön schuf dieses Bildthema in zwei Varianten. Über Wagenschöns erste Ausbildung ist nichts bekannt. Stilistisch verband er den österreichischen Spätbarock mit flämischen Einflüssen, insbesondere auf Rubens griff er häufig zurück. Besonders zahlreiche Werke schuf er in Ungarn: Altarblätter, Genrebilder und Porträts. In seinen sieben Radierungen, die von ihm bekannt sind und die Nagler „geistreich" nennt, finden sich Anklänge an den Radierstil des Antwerpeners Cornelis Schut (1597-1655).

      s.t., s.l. 1784 - Belle legature coeve in vitello maculato con cinque nervi e titolo oro su doppio tassello in pelle al dorso (assente un tassello al primo vol.). Lievi tracce di usura e marginali ingialliture alle prime carte del secondo vol., altrimenti ottimo esemplare. Ex libris Aldo Maffey. In quest opera, l A. si intrattiene su vari aspetti delle imposizioni sia dirette che indirette, sul loro rapporto con il reddito e con i patrimoni, sulla organizzazione incaricata della riscossione delle imposte. Si occupa anche della moneta in circolazione e dei rapporti con la finanza pubblica e affronta molteplici altri temi specifici, quali ad esempio, le contribuzioni ecclesiastiche, il lusso, il commercio dei grani. L opera, subito di grande successo, fu pubblicata più volte nello stesso anno e ristampata in 12mo nel 1785 ma le critiche alla politica del successore al ministero delle finanze e le teorie neo-mercantiliste, ivi esposte, contrarie alle posizioni sostenute dalla scuola fisiocratica allora in auge, portarono a vietare il libro in Francia poco dopo la sua pubblicazione. 8vo (cm. 20), 3 Voll., VI-CLIX-352 pp. con una tabella rip. alla pag. 306; VI-536 pp.; VII-468 pp., 1 c.nn.         Mémoires du Baron de Tott sur les Turcs et les tartares EDITION ORIGINALE

      à Amsterdam: S.n., 1784. Fine. S.n., à Amsterdam 1784, 4 parties en 2 Vol. in-8 (12,5x25cm), LVI, 274pp. ; 301pp. et 252pp. ; 208pp., relié. - First Edition. Each part has its special title page. Full brown calf marbled time. Smooth back wheels with ornate tail and head. Piece of red morocco, and volume number of black morocco. Head cover of Volume I partly missing, with a hitch; that of Volume II with a lack in upper joint. Upper joint of Volume I open; that of Volume II opened the first three boxes. Friction. Corners bumped. Baron de Tott, a French officer stationed in Turkey (attache at Constantinople, then ambassador in Crimea general inpecteur Levant) lived 23 years among the Turks. This book is the testimony, and made his memoirs, he tells both the board of the Baron de Tott and is undoubtedly the first book to give an objective picture of the Turkish nation and Turkish. From his preface, the author, after considerations on the influence of climate on the psychology of peoples (reference to Montesquieu) affirms the importance of knowing and speaking the language of a people, and the need to keep its European bias to describe the manners and institutions of the Turks, which had never been done; that is why we find in this book a wealth of knowledge and new information on the Turks and Tartars; in particular, the many dialogues between the Baron and some lords are particularly relevant for understanding the psychology and the Ottoman culture. Buffer Chateau de la Roche-Guyon. Library. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate. Coiffe de tête du tome I en partie manquante, avec un accroc ; celle du tome II avec un manque au mors supérieur. Le Baron de Tott, officier français en poste en Turquie (attaché d'ambassade à Constantinople, ambassadeur en Crimée puis inpecteur général du Levant) vécut 23 ans parmi les Turcs. Ce livre en est le témoignage et compose ses mémoires, il conte à la fois le parcours du baron de Tott et se trouve sans nul doute le premier ouvrage qui donne un tableau objectif de la nation ottomane et des Turcs. Dès sa préface, l'auteur, après des considérations sur l'influence du climat sur la psychologie des peuples (référence à Montesquieu) affirme l'importance de connaître et de parler la langue d'un peuple, et la nécessité de se garder de ses préjugés européens pour décrire les moeurs et les institutions des Turcs, ce qui n'avait jamais encore été fait ; c'est pourquoi on trouvera dans ce livre de nombreuses connaissances et renseignements nouveaux sur les Turcs et les Tartares ; notamment, les nombreux dialogues entre le Baron et certains seigneurs sont particulièrement pertinents pour appréhender la psychologie et la culture ottomane.         Télephe en XII livres

      Londres [i.e. Paris]: Et se trouve à Paris, chez Pissot, 1784. First Edition. Pechmeja's best-selling prose poem, published anonymously under the patronage of one Madame de Beauvau, presumably the Marquise de Boufflers. The work enjoyed both enthusiastic and scathing reviews from the most celebrated literary figures of the time. Readers admired the work's literary beauty and its touching description of friendship, while others found fault with the moral message (socialist in the modern sense). Among the most notable Télephe detractors was the author Jean-François de la Harpe, who wrote "[The author] seems, like Rousseau, to make a crime out of private property, without which no society could exist. He doesn't want children to inherit their fathers' fortunes, as if inheritance wasn't a natural right, and as if the fathers themselves didn't work for the sake of their children" (my translation). Others, including the relatively enthusiastic reviewer the Baron von Grimm, were nonplussed by Pechmeja's dour description of the fate of man and the injustices of oppression, maintaining that while virtue must always be exercised, little happiness can ultimately be experienced even with the purest intentions (my paraphrase of Michaud and Grimm). Grimm rejects comparisons made to Fénelon's novel Les Aventures de Télemaque (1699), saying that if Marmontel's Les Incas (1747) is the Télemaque for the age of the encyclopedia, then Télephe is the Télemaque for economists. Within three weeks of publication, sales had dropped dramatically and while the book was reprinted once in the 1790s and subsequently translated into English and German, Télephe never re-experienced its initial popularity. ESTC T132203.   References:   Baron von Grimm and Denis Diderot's Correspondance Littéraire, Philosophique et Economique, Vol. XII, mars, 1794, pp. 80-3.    Joseph Fr. Sr. Duque de Almodóvar, director de la Real Academia de la Historia, leido en junta el 11 de julio de 1794 por . Nicolás Rodríguez Laso.- [2],XXI p., sign.: A-C4.- Encuadernación original en plena piel, nervios dorados a rueda, numeración grabada y tejuelo; guardas de aguas y cortes tintados en rojo, conservando cofias, pies y puntas, sin más defecto que algunas pérdidas por rozaduras, unos mínimos puntos de taladro casi imperceptibles en los lomos y una rasgadura del mapa de v. 5, p. 193, recompuesta con cello por detrás hace varias decenas de años. Magnífico papel verjurado alcoyano de Vicente Valor.- Proc.: Diminuto tampón con dos M cruzadas dentro de un círculo -Michael Mathes-, y una firma ilegible en punta superior de portada.- // Pedro Luján y Suárez de Góngora, duque de Almodovar del Río, comenzó a publicar en 1784, bajo el seudónimo de Eduardo Malo de Luque, esta versión inconclusa de la que consideraba la obra ?más buena y más mala de quantas se han escrito en estos tiempos?, la "Historie philosophique." de Raynal. Al ir a traducirla decidió que convenía resumirla, modificar algunas partes (especialmente lo referido a España y a la Iglesia católica) y actualizarla con información de los últimos 20 años, para lo que fue añadiendo suculentos apéndices de mano propia, fruto de su experiencia como embajador en San Petersburgo, Lisboa y Londres. Así, "La Constitución de Inglaterra" y la "Continuación de los asuntos de la Compañía Inglesa de las Indias Orientales" (v. 2), "El Estado político-económico de la Francia" (v. 3), "Memorias analíticas relativas á la historia y actual estado de la Rusia" (caps. 9 a 24 de v. 4), o "El estado de la Compañía de Filipinas hasta 1790" (v. 5). Si la obra comezó a publicarse gracias a la censura positiva que Jovellanos (entonces censor de la literatura indiana para el Consejo de Castilla) emitió en la Academia de la Historia en 1783(1), no se sabe por qué se suspendió su publicación: si fue una reacción contra la Revolución francesa, una prohibición de Floridablanca, el convencimiento de que cada vez era menos traducción y más versión, o que se acercaba el momento de abordar el delicado asunto de los establecimientos de España en la conquista de América. En todo caso, el quinto volumen, que debía haber aparecido en 1789, se demoró hasta 1790. Hay quien dice, pensamos que erróneamente, que en el volumen 1 debe figurar un retrato grabado del duque de Almodovar, algo imposible en la primera edición de la obra publicada bajo seudónimo. El retrato, que efectivamente se imprimió, corresponde a la venta como un suelto, a partir de 1795, del "Elogio histórico" que cierra el quinto volumen de la "Historia política".- Refs.: Refs.: Aguilar Piñal, 5, 1855; Medina, BA, 1542; Medina, BHA, 5072; Palau, 147891. - // (1) Sobre Jovellanos y la censura previa exigida en el s.         Experimentum anatomicum quo arteriolarum lymphaticarum existentia probabiliter adstruitur, institutum, descriptum, et icone illustratum.

      Leiden, Abraham and Jan Honkoop, 1784 - 4to (277 x 215 mm), pp [iv] 36, with one colour-printed engraved plate; a fine copy on large and thick paper, uncut in original paper boards. £2500First edition of Bleuland's histological investigation of lymphatic vessels. This is one of a series of Bleuland's anatomical monographs, illustrated with his pioneering method of tissue fixing and dyeing and colour-printing. These are among the first such illustrations, and established the basis of histological illustration. Bleuland perfected a technique of injecting tissue structures with fixatives and dyes to reveal anatomical details, especially under magnification. His plates, mostly drawn by I. van der Jagt and engraved by I. Kobell, are remarkable for their precision in depicting microscopic detail. Goldschmid considered them pieces of exemplary printing, unusual in subject and make-up for the period. They are probably the first examples of colour-printing of microscopical subjects.Bleuland (1756-1838) was professor of anatomy, surgery, and obstetrics at Harderwyck and later Utrecht. He prepared more than two thousand anatomical specimens, which were bought in 1825 by King William I of Holland for the University of Utrecht.Anatomie de la couleur 124; Goldschmid, Entwicklung und Bibliographie der pathologisch-anatomischen Abbildung 86; Blake p 50; not in Waller or Wellcome;

        An Authentic Narrative of a Voyage performed by Captain Cook and Captain Clerke, in His Majesty's Ships Resolution and Discovery... including a faithful Account of all their Discoveries, and the unfortunate Death of Captain Cook... The Third Edition

      London: G. Robinson, J. Sewell; and J. Debrett, 1784. Two volumes, octavo, with a folding chart and 21 engraved plates, bound with half-titles and directions for placing the cuts; a very good copy in twentieth-century red morocco, gilt. A most attractive set of this uncommon third edition of an important account of Cook's third voyage written by the assistant surgeon Ellis: 'an important supplement to the official account' (Forbes).Ellis, surgeon's mate and talented amateur artist, sailed first on the Discovery and later on the Resolution. During the voyage he was esteemed by Captain Clerke as a 'very worthy young man'. On his return he was in financial straits and, despite the prohibition by the Admiralty of the publication of any unauthorised account of the voyage, sold his narrative to a London publisher for fifty guineas. It was published over his name, and was thus the first account of the expedition to acknowledge its authorship, earning the condemnation of Sir Joseph Banks, who wrote to him in January 1782 that 'I fear it will not in future be in my power to do what it might have been, had you asked and followed my advice'. Ellis died in 1785 after a fall from the main mast of a ship lying at Ostend.Ellis' narrative includes a chapter devoted to their visit to Van Diemen's Land in January 1777, in the course of which Ellis painted a famous watercolour view of Adventure Bay, now in the National Library of Australia. There is much valuable information on Alaska, the Northwest Coast, and Hawaii, and the attractive engraved plates, after the author's drawings, include eight of Hawaii, two of Alaska, and three of the Northwest Coast. The plates show Ellis to have been a talented amateur artist, and represent a significant and very early contribution to the graphic record of the voyage.This third edition is quite rare, and Forbes was only able to locate some six copies internationally. Testament to its rarity is the fact that it is in neither of the catalogues of the Hill nor the Kroepelien collections of voyage books. Beaglehole, III, p. ccvii; Beddie, 1601; Forbes, 'Hawaiian National Bibliography', 41; Hawaii One Hundred, 3 (first edition); O'Reilly & Reitman, 429.

        Schreckenvolle Wassers Noth in den Vorsta dten der Stadt Wienn, A. 1784, den 28. Februari gegen 4. Uhr Abends, wuchse der Donau Fluss so sichtbar an, das eine Stunde nachhero, alle an der Donau liegende Vorsta dte, mit Wasser angefu llet wurde. Durch den Rothen Thurn liefe das Waßer sogar in die Stadt und machte den Kirchgraben und andere niedrige Straßen voll mit Waßer. In der Leopold Stadt war das Unglück noch weit größer, das Waßer stieg so hoch, daß man nicht anders als mit Kahnen oder kleinen Schiffleins zu samen komen u: sich retten konte. Dießes wurde noch betrübter, weil die anhaltende Kälte die größte Eißscholle auf einander häufete, u: die Hoffnung zu einem baldige Ablauf des Waßers vereitelte.

      Augsburg, Kaiserlich Franziskische Akademie, 1784.. Altkolorierter Kupferstich (Guckkasten), Bildausschnitt 25,5 x 41 cm, Blattgr. 30 x 44 cm.. Als Vorlage für dieses seltene Blatt diente mit Sicherheit "Prospect der Leopold-Stadt"(Nebehay-Wagner 306/II/30) von Salomon Kleiner, es ist seitenverkehrt und teilweise stark verändert, so wurden sämtliche Straßen verbreitert und die Reste der Brücke perspektivisch angehoben; "Das Hochwasserereignis wird als eine der größten Naturkatastrophen der frühen Neuzeit in Mitteleuropa angesehen. Das Hochwasser verwüstete ganze Talzüge, unzählige Brücken wurden zerstört." (Wikipedia); die anlassbezogenen Blätter von der Kaiserlich Franziskischen Akademie sind durchwegs selten da sie nur über einen kurzen Zeitraum gedruckt wurden; etwas schmalrandig, einige Randläsuren, die Ränder alt verstärkt.

The Cardon family moved to Paris in 1761, and by 1780 Jean- Baptiste had developed a reputation as a harp virtuoso and teacher... After the outbreak of the Revolution he went to Russia, where he was harpist to the royal family and their theatres (1790?-93)... Cardon composed duos, trios, airs with variations, two concertos and over 30 sonatas for the harp. He also wrote L?'art de jouer de la harpe (Paris, 1785), a tutor for the single-action pedal harp tuned to the key of E- flat, that includes preludes as chord and arpeggio exercises in the keys of E-flat, B-flat, [F], C, G, D, A and E. "Krumpholtz was the most gifted and acclaimed harp virtuoso of the late 18th century and a prolific composer for the instrument. He is no less important for his efforts to perfect the harp... Krumpholtz's concertos, sonatas and variations for harp, which appeared in Paris from about 1775 (many were later reprinted in London), became staples of the repertory and are still highly respected. They contributed to the instrument's rapidly evolving technique, taking increasing advantage of the modulatory possibilities of the new pedal harp at the same time as he was perfecting its mechanism. The variations combine idiomatic harp writing with fertile invention." Anna Tuhá ková in Grove Music Online. The same share of grace and attractions is not possessed by all of them', he tactfully acknowledges; 'but while the improvement of their persons is the indispensable duty of those who have been little favoured by nature, it should not be neglected even by the few who have received the largest proportion of her gifts. .....'.

        The Royal Society Medal, in commemoration of Captain Cook. Obverse: Uniformed bust of James Cook. Reverse: Fortune leaning upon a column, holding a rudder on a globe

      London: Royal Society, 1784. Bronze medal, 43 mm. diameter, relief bust of Captain Cook on recto, full-length relief portrait of Fortune leaning on a column while resting her hand upon a rudder which is affixed to a globe on verso; in excellent condition ("about extremely fine"). The Royal Society's formal memorial to the great navigator: one of 577 bronze specimens. Fellows of the Royal Society were entitled to a free bronze medal, while silver and gold issues were available by subscription only; some were reserved for presentation. L. Richard Smith (The Royal Society Cook Medal, Sydney, 1982) has suggested a probable final minting figure of 22 gold, 322 silver and 577 bronze medals. An engraving of the medal was printed on the title-page of the second and third editions (and some copies of the first) of the official account.The commissioning of this medal was due above all else to the efforts of Sir Joseph Banks, who supervised 'the minting and distribution of the Royal Society Cook medal as a personal task coincident with the publication of the narrative of the tragic third voyage' (H.B. Carter, Sir Joseph Banks, 1988, p. 168). Cook's European reputation is borne out by several letters to Banks from the Continent requesting specimens of the medal, including one from Bougainville, who wrote in June 1785 to remind Banks that as a member since 1756 he felt entitled to one (see The Banks Letters, ed. W.R. Dawson, 1958, p. 122). Beddie, 2795; Betts, American Colonial History Illustrated by Contemporary Medals, 553; Klenman, K5; Marquess of Milford Haven, 'British and Foreign Naval Medals', 734; Mira, Captain Cook: his coins & medals, pp. 35-7; Nan Kivell and Spence, p. 72.
