Ornamenti diversi [Ensemble] Alcune decorazioni di nobili sale ed altri ornamenti [Ensemble] 36 planches détails architecture Rome (Ca 1800)

s.n.. First edition of these two works, of which the first appeared in 1782 and the second in 1787. Ornamenti has an engraved title and dedication and 24 illustrations on 22 plates; Alcune decorazioni has 24 plates. This set is followed by 36 lithographed plates published around 1800 of architectural details from the buildings of ancient Rome, based on the famous book by Desgodetz on the ancient buildings of Rome. All the engravings are on thick paper.Modern marbled paper boards, black morocco title-piece. Scattered foxing, dampstain to second title and in the margin of initial leaves of first volume. Paper good throughout. The son of an architect, Giocondo Albertolli specialized in stucco decoration - it was he who came up with the decoration of the Royal Palace in Milan and the Offices in the Palazzo Pitti in Florence. The publication of his works on ornament came under the aegis of his teaching. Most of the plates comes from work carried out by the architect-decorator, whose style can probably generally be described as Neo-Classical and whose published works make up a sort of breviary of Neo-Classical ornament and decoration.  s.n. s.l. 1782 in-plano (36,5x52cm) (4) 22pl. ; (6) 23pl.

Paris: Moutard, 1782. Two volumes, octavo, with ten folding engraved maps and plates; in later half calf over original papered boards. First edition: the rare original account of Pagès's extensive narrative of travel and exploration, of most interest for the second volume which recounts his voyage towards the South Pole in search of a Southern Continent under Kerguelen in 1773-74. The ten fine engravings all relate to this part of the work. This was Kerguelen's second voyage, and a disastrous one: Pagès was to be an important witness in the subsequent court-martial of the commander for the events surrounding the dismasting of the Rolland during a storm. Kerguelen was dismissed from the service, and his printed account of the voyage, which was officially suppressed, is today very rare. This second volume also describes Pagès's experiences on a whaling voyage north of Spitzbergen in 1776, which includes much information on whaling and the natural history of the whale. Some scattered spots, small tear to first title-page, but a very good copy.

Chez Moutard. First edition, illustrated with 10 boards inset, including 7 large folding maps, a dismemberment of sea whales. All boards are found in the second volume in fine except for the folding plate of whale dismemberment. The book includes the relationship of three trips. Volume 1 describes the travel Circumnavigation qu'effectua Pagès by the west for 4 years. After Louisiana, Texas Pagès crossed in leaving his ship in Santo Domingo, he traveled on the Mississippi. This is the earliest known description of Texas in an English-language book (when the book was translated). Pagès crossed Mexico, then went to the Phillipine and Java, in Mumbai and Surat, finally in Arabia, dating back to Saint John of Acre. Travel is also made by land and by sea, and the author has gleaned number of observations about the customs and manners of the people he has rubbed. The second volume is dedicated to two trips to the south pole (considerations of the Hottentots, the meeting) then north.

Wien: Joseph Herold, 1782. 1st Edition. Hardcover. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. 8vo. 472 pp. Contemporary grey cardboard. ----First Edition, very scarce. GÜSSMANN, Franz (1741-1806), a Jesuit physician in Lemberg and Professor of Natural History at University of Vienna, published a couple of interesting books on astronomical and mineralogical themes. He had been the first to suggest (in 1785) that meteorites actually fell from the sky. He was supported in this hypothesis by the German scientist Franz Chladni (1756-1827), but it was nevertheless well over 100 years before the theory was finally accepted, following the impact of the Tunguska metorite in 1908. This work deals with creation and the age of the earth and its inhabitants. Very Good.

VIII. 83 - Howes R361 - Sabin 72032 - Monaghan 124 "Robin was, upon Franklin's recommendation, attached to the army of Rochambeau as chaplain where, in the regiment of the Vicomte de Noailles, he established a kind of welfare center.

Octavo; a fine and very clean copy in an excellent modern French binding in the eighteenth-century style of grained dark blue calf, ornately gilt. The first and best French edition, and a most attractive copy. This edition contains, in addition to Zimmermann's narrative account, a life of Captain Cook adapted from material that had appeared in the Göttingisches Magazin, the work of either Georg Forster or Georg Lichtenberg (or both). First appearing in German in 1781, Zimmermann's was the first description of the third voyage to appear on the continent. Along with Rickman, it was one of two accounts published a full three years before the official account, and may well in fact be the earliest full description of the voyage to be published. Furthermore, in any early edition, Zimmermann's first-hand account of Cook's third voyage is one of the scarcest of all the Cook voyage accounts (there is, for example, no copy of any of the eighteenth-century editions in the catalogue of the Hill collection).Second French and German editions followed in 1783. "Both French editions are of great rarity and are of interest not only on that account but because of the additional matter which they contain... " (Holmes). Then followed Dutch editions in 1784 and 1791, and Russian versions were published at St. Petersburg in 1786 and 1788. These seem to have been all the appearances of the narrative until 1926, when the first version in English was published. As Rodney Davidson wrote of the early printings, "all these editions are exceedingly rare... It is hard to predict the realisation price for a copy if one were to come into the open market, as competition between collectors would be very keen... "."Zimmermann, a native of Speyer, was coxswain in the Discovery. From the start of the voyage he determined to keep a shorthand journal of the voyage and to retain it, despite the instructions... demanding the surrender of all logs and journals... His account is by no means free from errors, but it has an ingenuousness and charm which differentiate it from the other accounts. His appreciation of Cook's character deserves to rank with that of Samwell" (Holmes). Pp. 7 to 11 of this edition contain Zimmermann's long description of the Tasmanian Aborigines, with an interesting note in passing suggesting how many copies of the "Resolution and Adventure" medal, minted for distribution on the second voyage, were actually still available for distribution during the third voyage: on one day alone, Cook gave examples to eight or nine Aborigines, "which had such a good effect that the next day 49 more came to visit... some of whom received the same presents as their earlier compatriots, but none of whom was willing to come aboard the ships... ".Beddie records only the Mitchell and National Library copies in Australia.

Les Jardins, ou l'Art d'Embellir les Paysages.

Paris: Philippe-Denys Pierres, 1782. Duodecimo, engraved title, engraved plate, half-title, single page approbation at rear, a lovely copy in contemporary tan calf, flat spine gilt with red morocco label, bumped. A rare work and a very attractive copy of the most celebrated and influential poem of Delille, in which the author celebrated the virtues of the natural garden or jardin anglais, rather than the fashion for neoclassical symmetry. The work includes a famous cameo appearance by "Poutaveri", that is the Tahitian Autourou, who returned to France with Bougainville. In the poem, Poutaveri glimpses a mulberry tree - the plant most commonly used in the manufacture of tapa cloth - and is overwhelmed with homesickness for Tahiti. The name Poutaveri is interesting as it was actually Autourou's rendering of the name "Bougainville", a name he took in honour of his former captain and Parisian host.Jacques Montanier de Lille (1738-1813) was one of the great eighteenth-century French poets, and his works were much reprinted and translated: his influence on taste in gardening was significant, and he is also known for his translations into French of Virgil's Georgics and Milton's Paradise Lost, two great works with gardening themes.Les Jardins was first published the same year in in a limited and now very rare large format edition by Didot, and this attractive smaller format edition immediately followed. The poem was a great success throughout Europe with English and German translations appearing quickly. A few early and late pages with some browning at head and foot.

Paris: Knapen & fils, 1782. Octavo, with a folding map; contemporary French mottled calf, spine gilt in compartments; a good copy. The only edition, and very rare: the bulk of the edition was suppressed by the French Government, supposedly because of the book's dedication "A la Patrie". This is an important account, by their commander, of two significant voyages which set out from France with the highest hopes. Kerguelen was instructed to find and report on the southern continent: French ambitions rested on the sixteenth-century reports by Paulmier de Gonneville of a land in the same latitude as the Cape of Good Hope on which he had wintered in 1504. The "Gonneville Land" mystery persisted for centuries: historians now believe that he had in fact been in South America. On his first voyage, Kerguelen found and charted instead the inhospitable Kerguelen Island, four years before Cook's visit there. His irresponsible reporting of the value of his discovery assured him of his second command, a circumnavigation with emphasis on scientific as well as geographical discovery - it ended in disaster, with Kerguelen dismissed from the service and imprisoned for six years as a result of a series of episodes at sea all of which demonstrated gross negligence.Kerguelen's two voyages finally proved to the French what Cook had already generally demonstrated - that the southern continent was a fiction - but more importantly, their disastrous result ensured that promotion in the French navy was henceforth based on merit rather than breeding. 'La Pérouse may not have been a well-connected courtier, but he was honest and capable: that he was given the opportunity to lead the most comprehensive French expedition of the eighteenth century was a direct result of the Kerguelen episode... ' (J. Dunmore, French Explorers in the Pacific, p. 249; pp. 196-249 give a full history of Kerguelen and his significance in the history of French exploration).

Smooth back adorned with grotesque. Part of title in red morocco. Upper joint cracked the top 8 cm. Lower joint split into head and tail. Although this work is the most famous of the author, because of its title which many churches have taken the symbolic name, it is not the first of its kind and is even be a reduction of the heavenly arcana, but while Arcane is an exegesis of Genesis, The New Jerusalem is one of the verses of the Apocalypse of St. John, in which Swedenborg, as in his other works book an ultra rational view of metaphysics and spirituality. Renowned scientist, Swedenborg knows a mystical attack at age 55. God speaks to him and allows him to communicate with the angels: "I am the Lord, the Creator and Redeemer, I chose you to make known to men the inner spiritual meaning of the Holy Scriptures I dictate to you everything you should. write. " The author know several visions he transcribed in his books. Swedenborg no breaks with the doctrines of Luther which it is derived but the relationship with God based on love, and it gives great importance to the angels who are the foundation of the existence of good and evil and the soul is an emanation of divinity.

Fine late 18th Century map of Russia, published in Venice by Francois Santini and engraved by Remondini. The map is based upon the work of Johann Treskot and Johann Schmidt, whose 23 sheet survey of Russia, completed in 1776 for the Imperial Academy of Sciences, represented an important leap forward in the modern scientific mapping of Russia. From Lithuania and Poland in the west to the Pacific Ocean and the Aleutian Islands in the east, the Russian Empire sprawls across this map with great detail and refinement. Treskot & Schmidt's survey of Russia was the next major survey following the work of Joseph Nicolas De L'Isle. Almost immediately after the publication of De l'Isle's atlas of Russia in 1745, the Geographical Department of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences began planning for a new atlas of Russia. For various reasons, however, an updated work would not appear for several decades. As noted by Leo Bagrow There are frequent references to atlases of the Russian Empire published during the decades of the 1750's and 1760's...Actually, these atlases were simply loose collections of maps published the years following 1754, primarily during the period of Lomonosov and Rumovskiy...Copies of such atlases were individual collections of maps, sometimes provided with a title page which, it would seem, was usually printed in one copy only. The most prolific of these mapmakers were Johann Schmidt and Johann Treskot. Bagrow notes that these mapmakers were actively revising De L'Isle's work in the 1750s and 1760s, with Schmidt focused on the Baltic Regions and Treskot on Siberia. Engraving, printed on three sheets joined, outiles in original colors, in very good condition. Venezia Venice 1400 640

Sabin 58168.

Twenty handwritten lines in five four lines stanzas with autograph revisions rewriting parts of 6 lines, 1 page, quarto, trimmed at the head, Cowper's name written in pencil and subsequently inked over in another hand in an otherwise blank area at the foot, undated.Cowper translated the works of Madame Jeanne Marie Bouvier de la Motte Guyon, the pupil of the French Quietist Fenelon, at the suggestion in 1782 of his friend The Rev. William Bull, Independent Minister at Newport Pagnell and later his biographer. Cowper considered her verse to be the best French work he had ever read.         George Washington, Outraged over Continued Native American and Loyalist Attacks on the New York Frontier, Wishes "to chastise the insolence of the enemy in any future incursion," But Cannot Provide Much Direct Aid

Newburgh, NY 1782 - Letter Signed as Commander in Chief, to Governor George Clinton. Newburgh, N.Y., July 30, 1782. 4 pp., 7 x 11 3/4 in. "I have learnt with great concern the repeated depredations that have been committed on your Western frontier . notwithstanding the order . for the buildings necessary at the posts on the Mohawk, I fear he will not have it in his power to do it for want of money."Between victory at Yorktown and recognition of American independence, British forces, Loyalists, and native tribes all continued raids on American outposts and settlers, especially on the New York frontier. Washington had to maintain the army's strength in order to force favorable negotiations, but here defers to the local governor. Fortunately for both General and Governor, Colonel Marinus Willett was one of the Revolution's most capable leaders with decades of familiarity with Western New York's peoples, places, and potential problems. Transcript"Sir, I have been honored with your Excellency's favor of the 24th inclosing the Copy of a Letter From Col. Willet-From which I have learnt with great concern the repeated depredations that have been committed on your Western frontier, and should be extremely happy (were it in my power consistent with the general state of affairs) to afford a sufficient Detachment from this Army to cover the whole country; but I dare say you must be sensible this is not the case. How far it may therefore be expedient to call forth an additional aid of Militia, I shall submit to your Excellencys judgment, as you are better acquainted with the circumstances of the frontier, the strength of Willets command, and probably the state of the Enemy at Oswego, than I am. In the mean time, I wish to be informed as far as may be in your power, of the force of Willet's Corps now assembled on the Mohawk, also of the strength of the Enemy at Oswego, of which I have as yet had only vague and unsatisfactory accounts. Since the date of Col. Willet's Letter, he has, I suppose, received four hundred cartridge Boxes, in which Article his most essential deficiency consisted. In consequence of which I cannot but hope, that corps in conjunction with the Continental regiment stationed in that quarter will be able to give a better protection to the Country than has lately been the case, and to chastise the insolence of the enemy in any future incursion, especially since they are now likely to be supplied with hard bread and salted meat-Of which articles, however, I apprehend there will not at present be such quantities accumulated, but that they may be preserved from spoiling by temporary sheds, or cellars covered with good thatch, or substantial well-wrought shade of boughs, which may be constructed by a little care and attention of the officers and labour of the soldiers. This is upon a supposition that the public will not be enabled to erect stores for the purpose; for notwithstanding the order I have sometime since given to the Quarter Master to furnish materials for the buildings necessary at the posts on the Mohawk, I fear he will not have it in his power to do it for want of money. I have the Honor to be, with great respect, Your Excellency's most obedient Servant Go: Washington"Historical Background Despite Washington's victory over Cornwallis at the Battle of Yorktown in October 1781, the war lasted another year. The British had left Savannah, Georgia, only three weeks before Washington wrote this letter, and they still occupied Charleston, South Carolina, and New York City. Washington believed that the United States had to be robustly prepared for another campaign. Nathanael Greene, one of his most respected generals, agreed that the British would continue to prosecute the war. King George III wanted to fight on, and debates in Parliament left the option open. Even after a string of American victories had convinced the British to negotiate for peace, the British naval victory over French Admiral de G. (See website for full description)
