        Six Pamphlets... Catholicism

1782. BURKE, Edmund, LA MARCHE, Jean Francois de, et al. [Six Pamphlets on Catholic Emancipation.]. London and Dublin: 1782-1793. Octavo, contemporary half brown calf, burgundy morocco spine label, marbled boards: pp. (5), 2-163, (1); (2), 3-20; (3), 2-72; (3), 2-47, (1); (3), 4-88; (3), ii-xxvii, (2), 2-191. $2200.First edition, a scarce collection of major essays (1782-1793) on Catholic emancipation in a period of revolution, featuring BurkeÂ’s powerful essay declaring Catholic exclusion from constitutional rights “a serious evil” and numerous additional writings, including the influential works of Irish leaders such as Napper Tandy and Wolf Tone, scarce in contemporary marbled boards. In the late 1780s the governments of Ireland and England “steadily regained confidence following the end of the American warÂ… [but] after the collapse of the ancien regime in France, nothing would ever be the sameÂ… The controversy over the new French regime provided the central dividing issue in Irish politics” (McBride, Scripture Politics, 165-7). With Britain entering a long war with France, “the American Revolution, and especially the Declaration of Independence, had made an impact upon IrelandÂ… [as] Irish leaders began to acquire popular support for their attempts to widen the sphere of toleration” (OÂ’Gorman, Edmund Burke, 82). This major contemporary collection of influential writings on religious freedom and, specifically, on the rights of Roman Catholics, contains a seminal essay by Edmund Burke, essays by Thomas Potts and Jean Francois de La Marche, several anonymous writings, and a key series of Tracts that speak to progress signaled by the ParliamentÂ’s Quebec and Catholic Relief Acts of 1774 and 1778, and the Catholic Relief Act of 1829.BurkeÂ’s Letter to Sir Hercules Langrishe offers one of his finest writings in its argument for the enfranchisement of Roman Catholics. He firmly states that their exclusion from constitutional rights “seems to me a serious evilÂ… This way of proscribing men by whole nationsÂ… I can never believe to be politic or expedient, much less necessary for the existence of any state or church in the world” (19, 37). Interestingly, just as “Burke was preaching with unrivalled power the danger of tampering with the framework of the existing British Constitution, he argued that the Constitution of Ireland could not but be better strengthened by introducing gradually and carefully a Catholic element of property and education into political life” (Lercky, 135). As his biographer Cruise OÂ’Brien notes, Burke “did more than anyone else to secure legislative redress for the benefit of Irishmen.” BurkeÂ’s essay is aided here by an especially scarce assemblage of Tracts that includes writings by James Napper Tandy, colorful leader of the United Irishmen, together with Theobold Wolf ToneÂ’s 1791 Argument on Behalf of the Catholics of Ireland, which “made many converts to the Catholic cause (McBride, 169).The collection includes:*[POTTS, Thomas]. An Inquiry into the Moral and Political Tendency of the Religion Called Roman Catholic. London: Printed for G.G.J. and J. RobinsonÂ… and R. Faulder, 1790. *[LA MARCHE, Jean Francois de]. Lettre de M. LÂ’Evêque de Leon aux Ecclesiastiques Francois Réfugiés en Angleterre. Londres: J.P. Cochlan, 1793. *Anonymous. An Address to the President of the Protestant AssociationÂ… On the State and Behavior of English Catholics. London: Printed for R. Faulder, 1782. *Anonymous. Reflections on the Oaths Which Are Tendered to the Subject in this Country. London: Printed for J. Debrett, 1787. *BURKE, Edmund. A LetterÂ… To Sir Hercules Langrishe, Bart. MrP. On the Subject of Roman Catholics in Ireland, And the Propriety of Admitting Them to the Elective Franchise. London: Printed for J. Debrett, 1792. *(NAPPER TANDY, James, et al.). Tracts on Catholic Affairs. Viz. Presbyterio Catholicon &cÂ…. Dublin / London: Richard White / John Stockdale, 1792. This scarce collection of largely first editions features the first London edition, first printing, of BurkeÂ’s Letter, the preferred edition with BurkeÂ’s corrections of errors in the Dublin edition printed several weeks earlier. Lettre (1793) with title-page vignette displaying the badge of the Order of the Garter. Address to the President (1782) and Tracts (1792) without half titles. Goldsmith I:15432. ESTC T90019, T123892, N29418, T037951, T210850. Armorial bookplate. Contemporary marginalia.Text fresh with light foxing, mainly to preliminaries, slight edge-wear and rubbing to contemporary marbled boards, contemporary calf expertly restored. An extremely good copy of this historic collection.

Fautoribus patronis atque amicis offert A. Barthold.

Stettin, Berlin, Hamburg and other places, 1767-1782. - Large oblong 8vo. 53 written and ca. 50 blank ff. with a total of ca. 50 entries. Coloured title page on vellum, 4 armorial miniatures and 5 coloured illustrations; one pen drawing in red ink. Contemporary calf binding with spine label, covers and spine elaborately gilt, all edges gilt. A very charming album. The owner, Andreas Barthold, was born in 1752 into a wealthy merchant family from Stettin. He attended the school of mathematics established by pastor Johann Julius Hecker in 1747, which he left at the age of about 16 years, and was further educated at the Hamburg Academy of Commerce, founded in 1768. In 1773 he returned to Stettin, where he worked as a merchant, became a citizen in 1778, and married the following year. After this, his trail disappears. - Most of the entries in this album are from teachers and classmates at the Realschule in Berlin; another group of entries is by Hamburg merchants. Apart from the identifiable contributions (some 15 entries), the importance of this album lies in its very appealing colour illustrations, some of which are by known artists: this includes a view of a channel with ships by Christian Gottfried Mathes (1738-ca 1805), dated 1768, and a coastal landscape by Johann Carl Wilhelm Rosenberg (1737-1810), dated Stettin 1781. - Slight chipping to spine label; lower cover rubbed; bumped and chafed. Several leaves have been removed. Occasional slight staining and browning; very attractively bound. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

In original boards, entirely uncut—a lovely, clean, large copy.Moses Harris (1731-1785?) became “one of the most outstanding authors of entomological literature during the 18th century” after studying under his uncle and earning his appointment as secretary of an Aurelian society—entomologists who took their name from the gold color of the chrysalids of the silkworm (Lisney, Bibliography of British Lepidoptera). “A beautiful work in great estimation,” each of this scarce edition’s beautifully detailed plates was drawn and colored by Harris, who was considered “the best painter and engraver of insects of his day” (Quaritch 2557). Harris’ text closely follows “the outlines of the system of Linnaeus,” and the volume features a preface and index, along with an engraved title page, one diagram plate and 51 hand-colored copper-engraved plates (including scarce frontispiece). Text in English and French. Preceded by 1776 and 1781 editions. Nissen ZBI 1838. See Benezit, 412. Bookplate of John Thomas Stanley, First Baron Stanley of Alderly (1766-1850). Bookseller ticket.         De la Nouvelle Jérusalem et de sa doctrine céleste ; d'après ce qu'on entendu au ciel. Précédé d'une breve dissertation touchant le nouveau ciel et la nouvelle terre

Original French edition, rare, after the first published in London in Latin in 1758. Blond Full calf and marbled glossy contemporary. Smooth back adorned with grotesque. Part of title in red morocco. Upper joint cracked the top 8 cm. Lower joint split into head and tail. Although this work is the most famous of the author, because of its title which many churches have taken the symbolic name, it is not the first of its kind and is even be a reduction of the heavenly arcana, but while Arcane is an exegesis of Genesis, The New Jerusalem is one of the verses of the Apocalypse of St. John, in which Swedenborg, as in his other works book an ultra rational view of metaphysics and spirituality. Renowned scientist, Swedenborg knows a mystical attack at age 55. God speaks to him and allows him to communicate with the angels: "I am the Lord, the Creator and Redeemer, I chose you to make known to men the inner spiritual meaning of the Holy Scriptures I dictate to you everything you should. write. " The author know several visions he transcribed in his books. Swedenborg no breaks with the doctrines of Luther which it is derived but the relationship with God based on love, and it gives great importance to the angels who are the foundation of the existence of good and evil and the soul is an emanation of divinity. He was soon regarded as a universal genius, evidenced by the considerable influence he had, particularly in France on the writers of the Romantic generation, Balzac, who is quoted extensively, and draw him boards to his theory of desire Baudelaire, Cazotte and elsewhere in William Blake, Jung ... and even in Japan, in the book: The Buddha in the north. Bookplates. Ernest Chausson buffer. Great composer and self-taught, died at age 40 and left imperishable works in the field including chamber music, in the wake of the French Wagnerian, imbued with deep shagreen and melancholy. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate.       Berlin, und Stettin, 1782, pet. in 8°, de 2ff.-II-215pp., ill. d'un beau frontispice gravé représentant pentacles et baphomet, cart. papier crème époque, bon exemplaire. (ex-libris 19e Fr. First edition of these two works, of which the first appeared in 1782 and the second in 1787. Ornamenti has an engraved title and dedication and 24 illustrations on 22 plates; Alcune decorazioni has 24 plates. This set is followed by 36 lithographed plates published around 1800 of architectural details from the buildings of ancient Rome, based on the famous book by Desgodetz on the ancient buildings of Rome. All the engravings are on thick paper.Modern marbled paper boards, black morocco title-piece. Scattered foxing, dampstain to second title and in the margin of initial leaves of first volume. Paper good throughout. The son of an architect, Giocondo Albertolli specialized in stucco decoration - it was he who came up with the decoration of the Royal Palace in Milan and the Offices in the Palazzo Pitti in Florence.         Voyages autour du monde, et vers les deux Pôles par terre et par mer...

Paris: Moutard, 1782. Two volumes, octavo, with ten folding engraved maps and plates; in later half calf over original papered boards. First edition: the rare original account of Pagès's extensive narrative of travel and exploration, of most interest for the second volume which recounts his voyage towards the South Pole in search of a Southern Continent under Kerguelen in 1773-74. The ten fine engravings all relate to this part of the work. This was Kerguelen's second voyage, and a disastrous one: Pagès was to be an important witness in the subsequent court-martial of the commander for the events surrounding the dismasting of the Rolland during a storm. Kerguelen was dismissed from the service, and his printed account of the voyage, which was officially suppressed, is today very rare. This second volume also describes Pagès's experiences on a whaling voyage north of Spitzbergen in 1776, which includes much information on whaling and the natural history of the whale. Some scattered spots, small tear to first title-page, but a very good copy.

This is the earliest known description of Texas in an English-language book (when the book was translated). Pagès crossed Mexico, then went to the Phillipine and Java, in Mumbai and Surat, finally in Arabia, dating back to Saint John of Acre. Travel is also made by land and by sea, and the author has gleaned number of observations about the customs and manners of the people he has rubbed.       Wien: Joseph Herold, 1782. 1st Edition. Hardcover. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. 8vo. 472 pp. Contemporary grey cardboard. ----First Edition, very scarce. GÜSSMANN, Franz (1741-1806), a Jesuit physician in Lemberg and Professor of Natural History at University of Vienna, published a couple of interesting books on astronomical and mineralogical themes. He had been the first to suggest (in 1785) that meteorites actually fell from the sky. He was supported in this hypothesis by the German scientist Franz Chladni (1756-1827), but it was nevertheless well over 100 years before the theory was finally accepted, following the impact of the Tunguska metorite in 1908. This work deals with creation and the age of the earth and its inhabitants. Very Good.

Octavo; a fine and very clean copy in an excellent modern French binding in the eighteenth-century style of grained dark blue calf, ornately gilt. The first and best French edition, and a most attractive copy. This edition contains, in addition to Zimmermann's narrative account, a life of Captain Cook adapted from material that had appeared in the Göttingisches Magazin, the work of either Georg Forster or Georg Lichtenberg (or both). First appearing in German in 1781, Zimmermann's was the first description of the third voyage to appear on the continent. Along with Rickman, it was one of two accounts published a full three years before the official account, and may well in fact be the earliest full description of the voyage to be published. Furthermore, in any early edition, Zimmermann's first-hand account of Cook's third voyage is one of the scarcest of all the Cook voyage accounts (there is, for example, no copy of any of the eighteenth-century editions in the catalogue of the Hill collection).Second French and German editions followed in 1783. "Both French editions are of great rarity and are of interest not only on that account but because of the additional matter which they contain... " (Holmes). Then followed Dutch editions in 1784 and 1791, and Russian versions were published at St. Petersburg in 1786 and 1788. These seem to have been all the appearances of the narrative until 1926, when the first version in English was published. As Rodney Davidson wrote of the early printings, "all these editions are exceedingly rare... It is hard to predict the realisation price for a copy if one were to come into the open market, as competition between collectors would be very keen... "."Zimmermann, a native of Speyer, was coxswain in the Discovery. From the start of the voyage he determined to keep a shorthand journal of the voyage and to retain it, despite the instructions... demanding the surrender of all logs and journals... His account is by no means free from errors, but it has an ingenuousness and charm which differentiate it from the other accounts. His appreciation of Cook's character deserves to rank with that of Samwell" (Holmes). Pp. 7 to 11 of this edition contain Zimmermann's long description of the Tasmanian Aborigines, with an interesting note in passing suggesting how many copies of the "Resolution and Adventure" medal, minted for distribution on the second voyage, were actually still available for distribution during the third voyage: on one day alone, Cook gave examples to eight or nine Aborigines, "which had such a good effect that the next day 49 more came to visit... some of whom received the same presents as their earlier compatriots, but none of whom was willing to come aboard the ships... ".Beddie records only the Mitchell and National Library copies in Australia.

Les Jardins, ou l'Art d'Embellir les Paysages.

Paris: Philippe-Denys Pierres, 1782. Duodecimo, engraved title, engraved plate, half-title, single page approbation at rear, a lovely copy in contemporary tan calf, flat spine gilt with red morocco label, bumped. A rare work and a very attractive copy of the most celebrated and influential poem of Delille, in which the author celebrated the virtues of the natural garden or jardin anglais, rather than the fashion for neoclassical symmetry. The work includes a famous cameo appearance by "Poutaveri", that is the Tahitian Autourou, who returned to France with Bougainville. In the poem, Poutaveri glimpses a mulberry tree - the plant most commonly used in the manufacture of tapa cloth - and is overwhelmed with homesickness for Tahiti. The name Poutaveri is interesting as it was actually Autourou's rendering of the name "Bougainville", a name he took in honour of his former captain and Parisian host.Jacques Montanier de Lille (1738-1813) was one of the great eighteenth-century French poets, and his works were much reprinted and translated: his influence on taste in gardening was significant, and he is also known for his translations into French of Virgil's Georgics and Milton's Paradise Lost, two great works with gardening themes.Les Jardins was first published the same year in in a limited and now very rare large format edition by Didot, and this attractive smaller format edition immediately followed. The poem was a great success throughout Europe with English and German translations appearing quickly. A few early and late pages with some browning at head and foot.
