1782. Incisione in rame, mm 325x420, colorata d'epoca ai confini. In alto a sinistra bel cartiglio figurato e dipinto.

Enchiridion. Curante J.B. Lefebvre de Villebrune.

Paris: Typis Philippi-Dionysii Pierres 1782 - ONE OF A FEW COPIES PRINTED ON VELLUM, some natural discolouration to the vellum (particularly the final leaf), pp. [vi], 8, 96, 16mo, contemporary red straight-grained morocco, boards bordered with a gilt roll, spine divided by another thin gilt roll, green morocco lettering piece, other compartments with central gilt tools, edges gilt, green watered silk flyleaves and doublures, blue silk page-marker, preserved in a coordinated red morocco pull-off case (this with a spot of damage at base), fine. A finely bound example of one of the very few copies printed on vellum of the larger, annotated issue of Lefebvre de Villebrune's edition of Epictetus. Determining its exact limitation (and rarity) is complicated by the printer's habit of variations - there are two issues, with and without notes, both printed on vellum and on paper. (Included with this vellum copy is a paper copy of the printing without notes, pp. 46, in original blue wrappers, for comparison. The two have identical title-pages but the type is otherwise in completely different settings.) ABPC lists a copy sold at Christie's, 1978, described as 'One of 12 ptd on vellum' (making $1,600), but the limitation and the French title given there suggest that it may actually have been the French translation issued by Pierres in 1783, which Van Praet says was produced in a dozen copies. For this edition, Van Praet records both issues and under the issue without notes concludes that only four copies have ever been sold, while about this issue with notes he mentions only one (the dedication copy). There is a vellum copy of the 1783 French translation in the BL (and apparently copies of both the Greek issues on paper), while another sold at Sotheby's in 2008, but aside from the BL's holdings there appear to be no other copies of any version of the Pierre's 1782 Enchiridion in the UK. Worldcat locates the issue with notes in Gottingen, Erfurt/Gotha, and (possibly - no pagination given) Fribourg; the issue without is only slightly more common. Apart from the dedication copy, then, this may be the only other recorded copy on vellum. (Van Praet, III.31)

Beyträge zur Bestimmung des Alters unserer Erde, und ihrer Bewohner der Menschen

Wien: Joseph Herold, 1782. 1st Edition. Hardcover. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. 8vo. 472 pp. Contemporary grey cardboard. ----First Edition, very scarce. GÜSSMANN, Franz (1741-1806), a Jesuit physician in Lemberg and Professor of Natural History at University of Vienna, published a couple of interesting books on astronomical and mineralogical themes. He had been the first to suggest (in 1785) that meteorites actually fell from the sky. He was supported in this hypothesis by the German scientist Franz Chladni (1756-1827), but it was nevertheless well over 100 years before the theory was finally accepted, following the impact of the Tunguska metorite in 1908. This work deals with creation and the age of the earth and its inhabitants. Very Good.

He is considered one of the founders of modern chemistry by his contributions to experimentation. Priestley (1733-1804), pastor, theologian and chemist, was encouraged to publish his history of electricity by the Scientific and statesman Benjamin Franklin, whom he met in 1766 Priestley discovered among other things that the coal wood conducts electricity. In 1767, he realized that the electrification of the conductors is superficial. The same year he became pastor in Leeds, Yorkshire, where he became interested in research in the field of gas. With its innovative experimental work he was elected to the Academy of Sciences in 1772, when he published his observations on different air species.         Voyages autour du monde, et vers les deux Pôles par terre et par mer, pendant les années 1767 1776

Paris: Moutard, 1782. Discreet small stamps on half-titles, bindings slightly rubbed.. Two volumes, octavo, with ten folding engraved maps and plates; contemporary French marbled calf gilt; an excellent copy. First edition: the rare original account of Pagès's extensive narrative of travel and exploration, of most interest for the second volume which recounts his voyage towards the South Pole in search of a Southern Continent under Kerguelen in 1773-74. The ten fine engravings all relate to this part of the work. This was Kerguelen's second voyage, and a disastrous one: Pagès was to be an important witness in the subsequent court-martial of the commander for the events surrounding the dismasting of the Rolland during a storm. Kerguelen was dismissed from the service, and his printed account of the voyage, which was officially suppressed, is today very rare. This second volume also describes Pagès's experiences on a whaling voyage north of Spitzbergen in 1776, which includes much information on whaling and the natural history of the whale.Kerguelen's voyages finally proved to the French what Cook had already generally demonstrated - that the southern continent was a fiction - but more importantly, their disastrous result ensured that promotion in the French navy was henceforth based on merit rather than breeding. "La Pérouse may not have been a well-connected courtier, but he was honest and capable: that he was given the opportunity to lead the most comprehensive French expedition of the eighteenth century was a direct result of the Kerguelen episode…" (J. Dunmore, French Explorers in the Pacific, p. 249; pp. 196-249 give a full history of Kerguelen and his significance in the history of French exploration). Provenance: Private collection (Australia).

Beautifully bound.""This masterpiece of historical penetration and literary style has remained one of the ageless historical worksÂ… Gibbon brought a width of vision and a critical mastery of the available sources which have not been equaled to this day; and the result was clothed in an inimitable prose"" (PMM 222). ""For 22 years Gibbon was a prodigy of steady and arduous application. His investigations extended over almost the whole range of intellectual activity for nearly 1500 years. And so thorough were his methods that the laborious investigations of German scholarship, the keen criticisms of theological zeal, and the steady researches of (two) centuries have brought to light very few important errors in the results of his labors. But it is not merely the learning of his work, learned as it is, that gives it character as a history. It is also that ingenious skill by which the vast erudition, the boundless range, the infinite variety, and the gorgeous magnificence of the details are all wrought together in a symmetrical wholeÂ… It is still entitled to be esteemed as the greatest historical work ever written"" (Adams, Manual of Historical Literature, 146-7).         Six Pamphlets... Catholicism

1782. BURKE, Edmund, LA MARCHE, Jean Francois de, et al. [Six Pamphlets on Catholic Emancipation.]. London and Dublin: 1782-1793. Octavo, contemporary half brown calf, burgundy morocco spine label, marbled boards: pp. (5), 2-163, (1); (2), 3-20; (3), 2-72; (3), 2-47, (1); (3), 4-88; (3), ii-xxvii, (2), 2-191. $2200.First edition, a scarce collection of major essays (1782-1793) on Catholic emancipation in a period of revolution, featuring BurkeÂ’s powerful essay declaring Catholic exclusion from constitutional rights “a serious evil” and numerous additional writings, including the influential works of Irish leaders such as Napper Tandy and Wolf Tone, scarce in contemporary marbled boards. In the late 1780s the governments of Ireland and England “steadily regained confidence following the end of the American warÂ… [but] after the collapse of the ancien regime in France, nothing would ever be the sameÂ… The controversy over the new French regime provided the central dividing issue in Irish politics” (McBride, Scripture Politics, 165-7). With Britain entering a long war with France, “the American Revolution, and especially the Declaration of Independence, had made an impact upon IrelandÂ… [as] Irish leaders began to acquire popular support for their attempts to widen the sphere of toleration” (OÂ’Gorman, Edmund Burke, 82). This major contemporary collection of influential writings on religious freedom and, specifically, on the rights of Roman Catholics, contains a seminal essay by Edmund Burke, essays by Thomas Potts and Jean Francois de La Marche, several anonymous writings, and a key series of Tracts that speak to progress signaled by the ParliamentÂ’s Quebec and Catholic Relief Acts of 1774 and 1778, and the Catholic Relief Act of 1829.BurkeÂ’s Letter to Sir Hercules Langrishe offers one of his finest writings in its argument for the enfranchisement of Roman Catholics. He firmly states that their exclusion from constitutional rights “seems to me a serious evilÂ… This way of proscribing men by whole nationsÂ… I can never believe to be politic or expedient, much less necessary for the existence of any state or church in the world” (19, 37). Interestingly, just as “Burke was preaching with unrivalled power the danger of tampering with the framework of the existing British Constitution, he argued that the Constitution of Ireland could not but be better strengthened by introducing gradually and carefully a Catholic element of property and education into political life” (Lercky, 135). As his biographer Cruise OÂ’Brien notes, Burke “did more than anyone else to secure legislative redress for the benefit of Irishmen.” BurkeÂ’s essay is aided here by an especially scarce assemblage of Tracts that includes writings by James Napper Tandy, colorful leader of the United Irishmen, together with Theobold Wolf ToneÂ’s 1791 Argument on Behalf of the Catholics of Ireland, which “made many converts to the Catholic cause (McBride, 169).The collection includes:*[POTTS, Thomas]. An Inquiry into the Moral and Political Tendency of the Religion Called Roman Catholic. London: Printed for G.G.J. and J. RobinsonÂ… and R. Faulder, 1790. *[LA MARCHE, Jean Francois de]. Lettre de M. LÂ’Evêque de Leon aux Ecclesiastiques Francois Réfugiés en Angleterre. Londres: J.P. Cochlan, 1793. *Anonymous. An Address to the President of the Protestant AssociationÂ… On the State and Behavior of English Catholics. London: Printed for R. Faulder, 1782. *Anonymous. Reflections on the Oaths Which Are Tendered to the Subject in this Country. London: Printed for J. Debrett, 1787. *BURKE, Edmund. A LetterÂ… To Sir Hercules Langrishe, Bart. MrP. Tracts on Catholic Affairs. Viz. Presbyterio Catholicon &cÂ…. Dublin / London: Richard White / John Stockdale, 1792. This scarce collection of largely first editions features the first London edition, first printing, of BurkeÂ’s Letter, the preferred edition with BurkeÂ’s corrections of errors in the Dublin edition printed several weeks earlier. Lettre (1793) with title-page vignette displaying the badge of the Order of the Garter. Address to the President (1782) and Tracts (1792) without half titles. Goldsmith I:15432. After this, his trail disappears. - Most of the entries in this album are from teachers and classmates at the Realschule in Berlin; another group of entries is by Hamburg merchants. Apart from the identifiable contributions (some 15 entries), the importance of this album lies in its very appealing colour illustrations, some of which are by known artists: this includes a view of a channel with ships by Christian Gottfried Mathes (1738-ca 1805), dated 1768, and a coastal landscape by Johann Carl Wilhelm Rosenberg (1737-1810), dated Stettin 1781. - Slight chipping to spine label; lower cover rubbed; bumped and chafed. Several leaves have been removed. Occasional slight staining and browning; very attractively bound. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
