The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire.

London Strahan; and T. Cadell in the Strand -1788 1782 - Six volumes, 4to. First edition of volumes 4-6, new edition of volumes 1-3, engraved frontispiece portrait by Hall after Reynolds, 3 maps (2 folding), half titles to volumes 2-6, errata leaf in volume 6, small water stain to lower blank margin of volume 1, a few spots to endpapers otherwise exceptionally clean internally, contemporary diced russia gilt, volume 6 unnumbered (assume, quirky binder's error), natural age-wear making a very handsome set. Decline and Fall ranks as a "masterpiece of historical penetration and literary style and has remained one of the ageless historical works which. maintain their hold upon the layman and continue to stimulate the scholar" (PMM). Spanning a period of nearly 1500 years, this monumental work of history tracks the orbit of one of the greatest Empires of all time. The sheer scale and sweep of the narrative is breathtaking in its ambitious scope and brings to vivid life the collapse of a magnificent military, political and administrative structure. Proceeding at a brisk pace, the original fourteen volumes describe debauched emperors, corrupt practices, usurpers and murderers, bloody battles, plunder and loot, barbarian hordes, tumultuous events like the Crusades and invaders like Genghis Khan and many more. Later, it was condensed by various editors to make it available to more readers. Much of it seems like a modern battle epic or a gory scary movie with endless passages depicting power struggles, blood-drenched paths to the throne, ruthless killing of innocent women and children and the final disappearance of a mighty empire. The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire was written by an English historian who was inspired to write it when he undertook the Grand Tour and visited Rome as a young man in 1762. The book eventually took more than 20 years to complete and was received with both bouquets and brickbats. The Church banned it quite a few times as it was considered to have blasphemous passages about the Church. Gibbon was attacked by many devout Christians as a "paganist." Setting the starting point with the Emperor Augustus in 27 BC, Gibbon pursues the Romans relentlessly on to their final defeat in Constantinople in the 15th Century AD with the rise of the Turkish Ottomans. Stretching across North Africa, Europe and the Middle East as well as some parts of modern-day Asia, the Roman Empire was a tremendous human enterprise. Successively added to by emperor after emperor, it finally disintegrated and ceased being the "empire without end." Gibbon initially planned to write a history of the city of Rome but found himself so immersed in the subject that it gradually grew into a work about the empire itself. He provides interesting theories for the collapse of the Empire. The rise of Christianity, Islam and the attacks of various wild and brutal hordes contributed to the fall of this mighty Colossus.         Voyage pittoresque de la Grece.

Paris J.J. Blaise -1809-1824 1782 - First edition, third issue of first volume, 2 volumes in 3, large folio. Portrait, 3 engraved titles, 2 maps, 285 engraved plates, table, contemporary calf-backed marbled boards, vellum tips, rebacked, scattered light foxing, a very good set. Very good example of the first edition of one of the most celebrated Voyages pittoresques. Choiseul-Gouffier's masterpiece is the first publication of a travel voyage that is composed mainly of illustrations of places which are complementary to a narrative and descriptive text. This work established the model for later "Voyages pittoresques" not only in format but also by the employment of different artists. Notable artists used in this work include Saint-Aubin and Moreau le Jeune. Volume 1 contains a discourse on Greek history and the struggle for liberty. Primarily, though, it is an account of the author's travels through Greece and is heavily illustrated with maps, views of natural wonders and classical ruins. The first part of the second volume is a reconstruction of the Troad, that area of the Mediterranean associated with the "Iliad". It reflects the author's reduced circumstances and is sparsely illustrated. The second part, published after Choiseul-Gouffier's death by his friends from notes left by him, is a much more luxurious effort, probably as the result of subsidy, and is again heavily illustrated.         Meshech Weare LS involving Declaration Signer Matthew Thornton

New Hampshire, January 18, 1782. 7.625" x 6". "Single page document, handwritten on both sides by different hands featuring signatures of Chief Justice Meshech Weare (1713-1786) and Deputy Sheriff Simeon Ladd, as well as partial seal located in upper left corner of first page. In good condition with expected wear including minor creases and isolated stains. Most of this letter measuring 7.625"" x 6"" is inscribed in beautiful, flowing script. The front of this letter, dated January 18, 1782, instructs Simeon Ladd, the Deputy Sheriff of Rockingham County, NH, to bring the prisoner William Page to the Exeter chambers of Chief Justice Meshech Weare. Below the justice's signature "M. Weare", Simeon Ladd diligently notes that he duly delivered the prisoner as instructed on the same day. On the reverse, an anonymous court commentator notes that the prisoner's bail was set by Justice Mathew Thornton, who represented New Hampshire when he signed the Declaration of Independence seven years earlier. Our letter seems to be in response to a letter now archived in the collection of Keene State College. Dated January 7, 1782 and written from Exeter Gaol, prisoner Page implores Judge Weare to consider releasing him on bail. It is not known why Page was imprisoned or what Chief Justice Weare's final ruling was. Meshech Weare, lovingly referred to as the "Father" of New Hampshire, began his political life in local assemblies and militias. He graduated from Harvard College in 1735 and was likely a self-taught lawyer. After several positions held in the New Hampshire House of Representatives, Weare represented the colony at the 1754 Albany Congress. Weare was instrumental in crafting New Hampshire's first constitution in January 1776, and supported the American rebels. From 1776 to 1782--as we already know from this letter--Weare served as Chief Justice of the "Superior Court of Judicature" in New Hampshire. "

Viage desde Buenos Aires hasta la Asuncion, Corrientes, con observaciones astronómicas

Exceptional journal of the voyage of exploration performed by Felix de Azara from Buenos Aires to Paraguay, evidently the field work used to write his opus magnum Voyages dans l'Amérique Méridionale depuis 1781 jusqu'en 1801, to-date a foundation book to any library with an interest in the region; unique, we were unable to find any other manuscripts of this text in any public institution. Azara (1746 - 1811) was a Spanish military engineer, explorer, anthropologist, and cartographer. Following the signing of the Treaty of San Idelfonso (1777) between Spain and Portugal some trouble ensued over the Rio de la Plata; two delegations were appointed to solve the matter: Azara was commissioned for the Spanish. In 1781 Azara travelled to South America, first Brazil and then Uruguay, under the commission of surveying the boundaries. A Portuguese delegation never arrived, and Azara ended up staying in the region until 1801. He decided to make good use of his time there studying and exploring, he decided to accurantely map the region, state of previous Jesuit missions, population, ehtonography, etc., he also studied the natural history, and wrote observations on the flora and fauna along the border of Argentina, Brazil, and Paraguay. To this effect he travelled extensively, the manuscript here offered being a most valuable record of his expeditions. Arguably his most valued work was the Voyages dans l'Amérique Méridionale depuis 1781 jusqu'en 1801 (1809), which contains a geographic, political, and historical description of Paraguay and of the River Plate countries, the Jesuit establishments in the region, and the ethnography of the people who inhabit them. Azara was very interested in the role played by the Jesuits, their influence, foundations of towns, Reductions, and teaching of the natives. Overall, he is considered the most qualified writer on the history, costumes, manners and history of Argentina and Paraguay up to that date. This manuscript constitutes a valuable link to his observations and experiences, as well as to the history of the limits between Portuguese and Spanish possessions in South America. The manuscript begins with a note of presentation to the other comissaries appointed for the demarcation of limits "Traslado a V.S. antecedente resolucion para su inteligencia y de los demas Comisarios de la Demarcacion de Limites... Montevideo 14 de Oct[ubre] de 1782. Don Juan Jph de Vertiz. Al Capitan de Navio Don Jsp Varela". It offers a broad survey of the region between Buenos Aires and Asuncion. His observations were of great geographical value at the time - distance travelled by horse and foot, etc.-, also his notes on the indigenous population, wildlife and natural history. His observations also relate to the defense against the frequent attacks of the Indians: "Santa Fe and Vera Cruz have two parishes, one Spanish and one of natural castes. From the priest I know that there are 1,500 souls of Spanish descent and that Santa Fe could have 5,000 souls. In my review and inspection of the militia, this year there were 270 armed men, as part of the troops that fought against the frequent invasion of Indians from El Chaco" (p.15). And way of life: "On the ravine, past the river, sits the well situated town of Santa Lucia with a brick church, which has a good position in the town. There are thirty five indian families mainly 'Avipones', the women spin the thread and the men weave. The town has three estancias (ranches) with twelve thousand cattle heads; those that they do not consume are sold to the Paraguayan and Guarani missions. They live as a community and a Franciscan helps on the spiritual aspects of life. He has requested that the Indians be distributed so they might live like the Spanish." (p.29). Although no date of completion of the manuscript is given, one part -relating to the boundaries- is dated October 1782; and on pp. 45, Azara refers to a happening in 1784, allowing us to date it after that. It is a working manuscript, containing different types of paper, sizes, and ink; thus very likely his working manuscript during the journey. Provenance: the manuscript was sold in Sotheby´s, 1964, for 392 u$s, The Celebrated collection of Latin Americana, The property of Señor Alberto Dodero, to Maggs "The author describes his daily experiences, the terrain passed through, the vegetation, insect pests, villages, larger centres such as Santa Fé and Corrientes, and his reception by the inhabitants or local officials. Writing from Asuncion 27 February 1784 he reports the completion of his mission, to settle the Spanish-Portuguese frontier between the Parana and Paraguay rivers. The astronomical observations are made from a number of points between 5 May 1784 and 23 May 1787" (auction catalogue description). Palau, 20990, (Azara, Felix de, Viajes ineditos de D. Felix de Azara desde Santa Fe a la Asuncion, al interior del Paraguay; Buenos Aires, 1873). Descripcion o historia del Paraguay (Madrid, 1847), earlier published as Voyages dans l´Amerique meridionale, 1809 (Palau, 20975).

Paris in miniature: taken from the French picture at full length, entituled Tableau de Paris. Interspersed with remarks and anecdotes. Together with a preface and a postface. By an English Limner.

London: printed for G. Kearsly. 1782. 8vo., (6) + 170 + (2)pp., including the final advertisement leaf, a very little foxing at beginning and end, well bound in 19th century half calf over marbled boards, skilfully rebacked to match, spine gilt with raised bands and label. A very good copy. First edition in English. A translation by J.P. Macmahon of the French text by Louis Sébastien Mercier (1740-1814), the French dramatist, writer and author of his famous Utopian novel, L'an 2440> (1770). His portrait of pre-Revolutionary Paris is a marvellous collection of observations on Parisian society, both high and low. Mercier's keen observations on his surroundings and the journalistic feel of his writing meant that his work remained riveting despite the nature of its composition. 'There is no better writer to consult if one wants to get some idea of how Paris looked, sounded, smelled, and felt on the eve of the Revolution.' [Robert Darnton, The forbidden best-sellers of Pre-Revolutionary France.> New York, 1996.]. And so, here there are vivid vignettes of such subjects as chimneys, furnished apartments, hackney coaches, police runners, prisons, executioner, retailers of news, coffee houses, filles de joye, marriageable girls, Sundays and holidays, beggars, charitable donations, physicians, theatres, opera girls, &c. &c.

An appeal to the public, by George Robert Fitzgerald, Esq. In which is occasionally introduced the constitutional doctrine of indictments at common law, in contradistinction to those of statute law.

Dublin: printed in the year 1782 - 8vo., (2) + 2 + 3 - 463 + (1)pp., including the errata leaf, the text with numerous neat contemporary ink amendments, contemporary tree calf gilt, flat spine fully gilt in compartments, but the spine rather dull, with a patch of old worm damage to corner of upper cover. In spite of this a good, sound, copy. First edition: scarce outside Ireland. Not in Bradshaw. George Robert Fitzgerald (ca. 1746-1786), 'Fighting Fitzgerald', notorious for his duels, gallantries, and extravagances, was eventually hanged on 12 June 1786 outside the new gaol, Castlebar, for his part in the murder of Patrick McDonnell. Following his marriage to a rich heiress in 1770, Fitzgerald led a self-indulgent life in London, Paris and Dublin during the 1770s, punctuated by a catalogue of disputes, duels and escapades. By the time his first wife died in October 1779, 'he was chronically short of money, and since his only source of income was his father, who had promised to pay him £1000 annually in return for a capital sum of £8000 in the early 1770s, he returned to Mayo, accompanied by a bear, to secure the money owed. His father did not have it, so George Robert had him legally ousted from the family estate, and when his father sought the payment of the allowance to which he was entitled, George Robert first manacled him to his bear, then to a dray, and later imprisoned him in a ‘cave’. Such behaviour, combined with his accoutring of a set of local desperadoes as his personal volunteer corps, disturbed local gentlemen and contributed to the precipitation of a sequence of encounters with Caesar French, Hyacinth Martin, and Denis Browne, in none of which did Fitzgerald conduct himself according to the rules of duelling. Indeed, his reign of terror was halted, and then temporarily, only by the intervention of his younger brother, Charles, who prosecuted him to conviction for mistreatment of their father at Castlebar assizes in 1781. George Robert managed to frustrate the efforts of the authorities to imprison him for a time, but he was eventually incarcerated following a retrial.' [James Kelly in ODNB]. The present Appeal> is Fitzgerald's detailed explanation and justification of not only the family dispute but also of his encounters with Caesar French, Hyacinth Martin, and Denis Browne.       104; 56 pp. Two parts in one vol. 8vo, cont. half-calf & speckled boards, flat spine, red leather lettering piece on spine. St. Petersburg: 1782. First edition and a rare and fascinating document. The first and far larger part lists the goods entering Russia and the taxes imposed upon them. The variety of merchandise is enormous: from foodstuffs to medicines to textiles to Chinese export porcelain to iron to dyeing materials to feathers to various kinds of papers to varieties of salts to shoes to many kinds of wines (and I could go on and on and on). The taxation tariffs were promulgated by Catherine II on 27 September 1782. The smaller second part lists Russia's exports; they are mainly agricultural products and leave the country mostly duty free. This copy has been interleaved throughout. A contemporary hand has added many notes regarding the imports. Fine copy. WorldCat lists no copy in North America.
