An Authentic Narrative of a Voyage performed by Captain Cook and Captain Clerke, in His Majesty's Ships Resolution and Discovery during the years 1776, 1777, 1778, 1779 and 1780

London: G. Robinson, 1782. 2 volumes in one, 8vo. (8 1/4 x 5 1/4 inches). Half-titles lacking. Engraved folding map, 21 engraved plates. Modern antique calf, spine with raised bands in 5 compartments, red morocco lettering piece in the second, others with a repeat decoration in gilt. First edition of a rare account of Cook's third voyage, preceding the official account by two years and containing "among the earliest published [illustrations] on the Hawaiian Islands, Alaska and the Northwest" (Hill). Ellis, the surgeon's mate aboard the Discovery and later the Resolution, here gives the second published account in English of Captain Cook's monumental third voyage (preceded by only Rickman). Although the publication of journals from the voyage was prohibited by the Admiralty, Ellis upon his return sold his narrative to a bookseller for fifty guineas who printed the account using Ellis's name, much to the disappointment of Joseph Banks and others who had considered Ellis a promising young officer. Ellis was a keen observer and gives an accurate account of the voyage, with many details on Hawaii, Alaska and the Northwest coast of America published here for the first time. The author was also a talented artist, and the fine plates are engraved after Ellis's own drawings, including among the earliest views of Hawaii. "His descriptions reflect his artist's eye and form an important supplement to the official account" (Forbes). Ellis died in 1785 after a fall from the main mast of a ship lying at Ostend. Beaglehole, III, p. ccvii; Beddie, 1599; Davidson, 'A Book Collector's Notes', p. 66; Hill, 555; Hocken, pp. 20-21; Holmes, 42; Judd, 59; Kroepelien, 399; Lada-Mocarski, 35; Forbes 41.

WEDGWOOD (Josiah) An Attempt to Make a Thermometer for Measuring the Higher Degrees of Heat, from a Red Heat up to the Strongest That Vessels Made of Clay can Support,

pp.305-326. Presented within the complete volume of the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society, Vol 77, Parts I and II (complete), for 1782 bound in one volume, comprising, vii, 463pp small quarto, with 16 engraved plates (mostly extending), a very good copy, late 19thC library cloth with a neat unlinked library name stamp on general title and foot of last leaves, London, Locker Davis and Peter Elmsly, printers to the Royal Society,1782. A FULL LIST OF CONTENTS OF THIS VOLUME SENT ON REQUEST. * . Josiah Wedgwood (1730-1795) master potter. Starting with a very small capital, Wedgwood wanted clean, efficient factories. There he implemented the then revolutionary system of division of labour and inaugurated a mode of working which anticipated mass production. His success was meteoric and within just seven years he had purchased an estate for 3,000 which he named "Etruria" on which he sited his factories and built his mansion Etruria Hall. Although he had had very little formal education he was elected a fellow of the Royal Society in 1783. On May 9th 1782 he communicated this paper to the Royal Society. Here Wedgwood describes the construction and use of a pyrometer, an ingenious invention for determining and registering high temperatures by the measurement of the shrinkage suffered by cylinders of prepared clay in the furnace or kiln. In the opening paragraph Wedgwood sets out the nature of the problem: "A measure for the higher degrees of heat, such as the common Thermometers afford for the lower ones, has ever been a desideratum, both to the philosopher and the practical artist. Most of those productions of art, which owe their existence to the action of fire, have their beauty and value essentially influenced by minute deficiencies or excesses of heat; and the artist is frequently precluded from availing himself of the advantages which might result even from his own experiments, where the heat has passed under his own eye, by not being able to ascertain the degree of such heat; much more so from those of others, who have no means of communicating to him even the imperfect ideas which they have themselves of the heat made use of in their operations. The common distinctions of red, bright red, and white heat are, as will appear hereafter, totally inadequate to the purpose; they are by far too indeterminate, and of too great latitude; the brightness or luminousness of fire increasing, with its force, through numerous gradations, which can neither be expressed in words nor discriminated by the eye." Wedgwood published very little and almost all of his handful of publications are very rare. This paper, revealing his principles of experimentation and combining scientific knowledge with his practical experience as a potter, provides valuable insight into the mind and way of working of one of the most influential figures of the industrial revolution. Other papers in this volume include: FITZGERALD (Keane) Experiments with Chinese Hemp Seed, pp.46-49; WILSON (Patrick) An Experiment Proposed for Determining, by the Aberration of the Fixed Stars, Whether the Rays of Light, in Pervading Different Media, Change Their Velocity according to the Law Which Results from Sir Isaac Newton's Ideas concerning the Cause of Refraction; And for Ascertaining Their Velocity in Every Medium Whose Refractive Density is Known, pp.58-70; HERSCHEL: On the Parallax of the Fixed Stars, pp.82-111; AND: Catalogue of Double Stars.         Tulipes [Pl. 22]

Paris: chez Bance et Schroth, editeurs, rue du Mail, No. 5., Beautifully hand-coloured lithograph. Printed on wove paper. In excellent condition. A tiny tear in the bottom right corner of the sheet. 20 1/8 x 15 5/8 inches. A rare lithograph of a bouquet of tulips after a painting by Pierre- Joseph Redouté. Pierre-Joseph Redouté was one of the world's great flower painters. Born into a family that had been painters for at least two generations, Redouté went to Paris in 1782 with his brother where they worked as scene painters for the Théâtre italien. Redouté painted flowers in his spare time. The search for subjects led him to the Jardin du Roi and eventually Gerard van Spaendonck who made him an assistant. While at the Jardin du Roi, Redouté came to know Charles-Louis L'Heritier, an amateur botanist and writer of independent means. He gave Redouté a full time job as an illustrator, instructing him in plant anatomy. Redouté's "functional" understanding of plants contributed greatly to the clarity of his depictions. But it was Redouté's work in stipple engraving and colour printing that was to be of the greatest importance. Stippling and the application of two or three colour inks to one plate were engraving innovations that Redouté brought to French printmaking, and which he perfected in his masterpiece Les Liliacées. Redouté's talents as a flower painter are magnificently exemplified in this stunning bouquet of tulips. Since the majority of Redouté's work was executed in stipple, this superb lithograph is a fascinating and rare print. It is not only a lovely example of early lithography but also a magnificent example of Redouté's delicate painting.

He later joined the court of the Elector of Bavaria and rose to become head of the elector's army. "Professionally, Thompson was a soldier of fortune. His first serious scientific study was to determine the optimal position of firing vents in cannon and to measure the velocity of the shot as a function of the composition of gunpowder. He used a ballistic pendulum method first introduced by Benjamin Robins. Thompson's long paper on this subject, published in 1781, won him fellowship in The Royal Society of London... It was during his investigations of cannon that he was impressed by the large amount of heat generated in cannon barrels by the explosion of gunpowder even when no ball was being fired. He was thus led to accept the vibratory theory of heat, which he championed actively all his life." [DSB].       [1] (title), [2]-[8] pp. Folio (ca. 300 x 230 mm.). Unbound. Notated in ink on 16-stave music manuscript paper. The work is in three movements, the first, marked "Allegro," in 82 measures; the second 70 measures; and the third, marked "Rondeau Allegretto," in 210 measures. 14 measures cancelled. Overpaste corrections to a total of 10 measures, with several additional corrections. . The present manuscript is Viotti's arrangement of his Sonata for Violin and Bass (Giazotto no. 36), composed in Paris in 1782. While there are published editions of the version for violin and bass (see RISM V1940-V1946), there do not appear to be any published editions of this version for keyboard. A highly distinguished Italian violinist and composer, Viotti is regarded as "the most influential violinist between Tartini and Paganini and the last great representative of the Italian tradition stemming from Corelli. He is considered the founder of the ‘modern’ (19th-century) French school of violin playing, and his compositions, among the finest examples of Classical violin music, exerted a strong influence on 19th-century violin style."
