A COLLECTION OF POEMS . . . BY SEVERAL HANDS

London: for J. Dodsley, 1782. Hardcover. A Pretty Common Title, but inUncommonly Pretty Contemporary Condition. 171 x 114 mm (6 3/4 x 4 1/2"). With half titles. Six volumes. SUPERB CONTEMPORARY SPRINKLED CALF, flat spines, wide gilt bands forming elegantly gilt compartments with scrolling cornerpieces and large sunburst centerpiece, red and green morocco labels. Engraved vignette title page, engraved and woodcut headpieces and tailpieces, two engraved plates. Perhaps 20 leaves with moderate foxing, small dent and puncture in the fore edge of four gatherings of the first volume (text unaffected), frequent offsetting in the text, otherwise only insignificant defects internally, the leaves quite fresh and clean. Covers with only trivial imperfections, THE ESPECIALLY ATTRACTIVE BINDINGS REMARKABLY WELL PRESERVED. This is about as fine a copy as one could ever hope to find of this famous collection of 18th century verse (first printed 1748-58), the work for which Dodsley (1703-64) is best remembered. Dodsley began his career as a footman with literary aspirations. According to DNB, he was in service with "Charles Dartiquenave, a well-known London epicure, friend of Swift and Pope, member of the Kitcat Club, and contributor to 'The Tatler.'" Pope became a friend and patron of Dodsley, and helped provide funds for him to leave service and become a bookseller. DNB tells us that our editor's purpose in compiling the present work was "to preserve to the public those poetical performances, which seemed to merit a longer remembrance than what would probably be secured to them by the manner wherein they were originally published." Dodsley took great pains to obtain contributions from nearly every important poet of the day, and the book became perhaps the most popular poetic miscellany ever produced. Our copy comes from a newly corrected edition with notes by Isaac Reed. While it is certainly not of great rarity, the work could not be found in contemporary condition appreciably better than what is seen here.

[AUTOGRAPH LETTER, SIGNED, FROM JONATHAN DAYTON TO HIS FATHER, ELIAS DAYTON, REGARDING THE CATTLE TRADE AND OTHER TRADE, PROBABLY SMUGGLING, AROUND NEW YORK AT THE END OF THE REVOLUTION]

Elizabethtown. June 8, 1782.. [2]pp. plus integral address leaf. Folio. Old fold lines. Lightly soiled, slight separation at some folds. Outer edge portion of address leaf (about an inch wide) lacking, not affecting text. Small repairs to fold of address leaf. Very good. In a blue half morocco and cloth clamshell case, spine gilt. Jonathan Dayton writes to his father, Col. Elias Dayton, regarding the trading and movement of cattle during final days of the American Revolution. Jonathan Dayton, politician from New Jersey and namesake of the town in Ohio, was the youngest delegate to the Constitutional Convention and the youngest signer of the Constitution, being only twenty-six at the time. He was elected to several terms in Congress and held important political offices, in addition to dabbling in land and securities speculation. There seems to be no question that Dayton played a significant, albeit minor, role in the Burr Conspiracy, a plot to encourage the western states to secede and together invade Texas, thereby carving out an independent nation in the west. Though he was acquitted, this and other incidents led to poor public perception of Dayton in the later years of his life. In this letter, Dayton describes the way in which some of the militia are asserting themselves on behalf of a local farmer, Aaron Winant, serving as a guard for his cattle. In fact, there seems to have been a good deal of trade between the lines, with the war effectively over; and Dayton's statements about the New York trade and goods as well as cattle moving back and forth suggest Dayton was running a neat little black market operation. The letter was sent by way of William Shute (mentioned in the text), who served with Jonathan Dayton in the New Jersey militia. Dayton writes: "Dear Sir, I have some reason to expect dispatches from the other side for Gordon & Asgill tomorrow morning if any one can go for them. The twelve month men, a few of whom are now here, will suffer no one to pass but whom they all are pleased with & act rather as a guard & cover to Aaron Winant, in sending over cattle than in any other capacity. When cattle are to be sent, they either place a guard at the point or send an arm'd boat by way of cover; if a party goes down to catch Winant's oxen, the years men immediately secure their boat & say they have orders from Capt. Craig to seize & collect them all. By this means the trade is very effectually guarded & every one who wishes, prevented from checking it. "Hendrix has formed a plan to take in the New York trade & those interested with them on this side. The goods are getting ready in New York & will come out with in five or six days. He has been here this day to acquaint me with it. Cannot a party of about 15 men be sent down on Tuesday morning under Billy Shute? It will be necessary for the execution of Hendrix's plan for preventing the impositions before mentioned as well as for other good reasons. The expectation of an attempt from the enemy to carry off the cattle from the pastures along the different points should likewise have its weight. Shute wishes to come & I should prefer him to any one else. He carries this letter, & will deliver you a paper of yesterday. They seem to be of opinion on Staaten [sic] Island that Lippenent will be hanged in the city. The refugee news corps are all ordered from Staaten Island to Powles Hook & it is expected will move tomorrow. Two British regts. are to be added to the one now there for the protection of the Island. This will contribute much to the safety of the people situated along the lines."

Reflexiones Imparciales sobre la Humanidad de los Españoles en las Indias, contra los pretendidos filósofos y políticos

In contemporary morocco with the arms of the King of Spain; rebating the writings of Las Casas, Raynal and Robertson. En marroquín de época con las armas del Rey de España; primera edición española de la obra de Nuix, rebatiendo la ?Leyenda Negra?. 1782. Madrid. Joaquín de Ibarra. In 4to (284 mm x 200 mm). lii + 315. Contemporary red morocco, boards with interlacing gilt fillet and centre with arms of the King of Spain, raised bands to spine, rolled and tooled in gilt, green morocco lettering piece; soiled, heavier to back board, gently rubbed. Beautiful copy in large paper, much taller than virtually every copy, last folio with dampstain, else very fresh and crisp.A large paper copy, bound in red morocco with the arms of the King of Spain. Translated and annotated by Pedro Varela y Ulloa. The work was first printed in Italian, this being the first Spanish edition. A significant piece of Americana; the work rebates the writings of Raynal, Robertson and Las Casas, and reestablishes the memory of the Spanish conquistadors and settlers in America. Shortly after the discovery, the first cities were built and the evangelization and colonization of the natives began; a Bishop stationed in Cuba, Bartolome de las Casas and a colleague, Montesinos, complained harshly and vigorously on the treatment of the Indians by the Spanish. In 1552, las Casas? Treatise was published in Seville, thus giving birth to what was later known as the ?black legend? of America; Las Casas? allegations were discussed and argued, Nuix?s is arguably the most representative literature of this nature. Nuix had reason enough to be disenchanted with Spanish and Ecclesiastical policy, having been a refugee after the 1767 expulsion of the Jesuits. TO HIS EXCELLENCY GENL. WASHINGTON COMMANDER IN CHIEF OF THE ARMIES OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. THIS PLAN OF THE INVESTMENT OF YORK AND GLOUCESTER HAS BEEN SURVEYED AND LAID DOWN, AND IS MOST HUMBLY DEDICATED BY HIS EXCELLENCY'S OBEDIENT AND VERY HUMBLE SERVANT, SEBASTN. BAUMAN, MAJOR OF THE NEW YORK OR 2nd REGT OF ARTILLERY

Philadelphia. 1782.. Copper engraving, with original hand- coloring. A "References to the British Lines" is set within a scroll in the upper right corner. At lower center is a Lengthy key or "Explanation" of the battlefield, which identifies and describes eighteen key locations on the battlefield. The explanation is set within a rococo frame, which in turn is enclosed by the flags of the United States and France, cannon, arms, and other spoils of battle. Image size (including text): 25 1/2 x 17 7/16 inches. Sheet size: 27 x 18 7/8 inches. Some minor creases on verso from previous folding, restoration to margins beyond plate mark. Else very good. Within three days of the British surrender on October 19, 1781, Major Sebastian Bauman, an American artillery officer, took the field and carefully surveyed the terrain and battle positions at Yorktown. A native of Germany, Bauman had emigrated to America after service in the Austrian army. During the Revolution he served in the campaigns in New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania, and was in command of the artillery at West Point, before joining Washington at the siege of Yorktown. Bauman spent six days surveying the battlefield at Yorktown. His manuscript draft was quickly sent to Philadelphia, where it was engraved by Robert Scot to be sold by subscription. The map was advertised in THE NEW YORK PACKET and the AMERICAN ADVERTISER in March 1782: "Major Bauman of the New York, or Second Regiment of Artillery, Has Drawn a Map of the Investment of York and Gloucester, in Virginia. Shewing how those posts were besieged in form, by the Allied army of America and France; the British lines of defence, and the American and French lines of approach, with part of York River, and the British ships as they then appeared sunken in it before Yorktown; and the whole encampment in its vicinity. / This Map, by desire of many gentlemen, will shortly be published in Philadelphia, in order that the public may form an idea of that memorable siege. Those gentlemen who incline to become subscribers will apply to the printer hereof; where the conditions will be shewn, and subscription money be received." This was the only detailed battle plan of Yorktown published in America. As a participant for the winning side, Bauman was able to spend more time surveying the field than the British engineers who were bottled up in Yorktown. Thus he was able to include an extensive area to the south of the town that does not appear on the best British plans, such as those published by Faden and Des Barres. The location of the French and American positions is necessarily more detailed and informed. As it appeared in print before the British plans, it was the first survey of the Siege of Yorktown made available to the American public. Margaret Pritchard notes that the plan was also an effective piece of propaganda: "In addition to providing substantial detailed military information, this map is also interesting for its artistic composition. Yorktown, Gloucester Point, and troop positions are confined primarily to the top half of the map. The lower half is dominated by the explanation that is embellished with ornaments of war. The shape of the scrollwork cartouche surrounding the explanation, with flags and banners that thrust upward from both sides, force the eye to the center of the image. Here, in an open space, is the very heart of the map, 'The field where the British laid down their Arms.' It is this field that is omitted from all of the British battle plans of Yorktown." Bauman's plan is a legendary rarity which almost never appears on the market. Its scarcity is due to the fact that it was separately published by subscription only. Relatively few sheets were printed, and very few of those survived. Wheat & Brun locate eight institutional copies, but not one in Virginia. To these we can add four copies known to us in private American collections. Perhaps Nebenzahl best summarized the importance of the map: "Bauman's splendid map, dedicated to General Washington, reflects his formal European training in topographical engineering. It is the only American survey of the culmination of the great struggle for independence and a cornerstone document of our national heritage." Alexander O. Vietor, THE BAUMAN MAP OF THE SIEGE OF YORKTOWN. SCHWARTZ & EHRENBERG, p.199. DEGREES OF LATITUDE 68. NEBENZAHL, PRINTED BATTLE PLANS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION 189.         LETTERS FROM AN AMERICAN FARMER; DESCRIBING CERTAIN PROVINCIAL SITUATIONS, MANNERS, AND CUSTOMS, NOT GENERALLY KNOWN; AND CONVEYING SOME IDEA OF THE LATE AND PRESENT INTERIOR CIRCUMSTANCES OF THE BRITISH COLONIES IN NORTH AMERICA

London. 1782.. [16],318pp. plus two folding maps and [2]pp. of ads. Half title. Contemporary calf; rebacked, leather label. Corners worn, boards rubbed. Modern bookplate on front pastedown; contemporary inscriptions on front fly leaf. Modern library ink stamp on half title. Light scattered foxing and dampstaining. Good. First printing of this important and greatly influential work. Crèvecoeur came to America during the French and Indian War and served with the French forces. Afterwards he settled in the British colonies, becoming a farmer. This work, which describes his experiences in America, is justly famous for its vivid picture of a colonial world slipping into the chaos of war, revolution, and nationhood. Two of the essays, "What is an American?" and "Distresses of a Frontier Man," particularly address the confusion of the times. Crèvecoeur gives a negative assessment of slavery in his section on South Carolina, and one of the "letters" is written from Culpeper County, Virginia. There is also much on the natural history of British North America, and ethnographic information on American Indians. Also notable are Crèvecoeur's account of Nantucket, and the excellent maps of that island and Martha's Vineyard. "As literature unexcelled by any American work of the eighteenth century" - Howes. Certainly one of the chief works of literature, and one of the most important observations on America during the era of the Revolution. HOWES C883, "b." CLARK I:218. STREETER SALE 711. SABIN 17496.

North West View of Windsor Castle, In the County of Berks

London: Published by John Boydell, 1782. Engraving, printed on fine laid paper. Very good condition apart from some overall light soiling, minor creasing in the bottom margin, and a few mild surface abrasions in the margins. Some faint writing in black pen is visible in the top right corner of the sheet. One of a pair of views of Windsor Castle engraved by Fittler after the celebrated landscape painter George Robertson. Towards the middle of the eighteenth century, a trend developed among English artists and printmakers who sought to visually record the natural beauties of England and Wales. Sparked by a sense of national confidence and patriotism, English printmakers began to publish topographical prints of the important sights in the British Isles. In addition to being a visual record of the countryside, they were meant to encourage public recognition of the beauty and history of England. They were aimed at English and foreign tourists who desired a memento of their travels, or at those armchair travelers who collected topographical prints instead of traveling. Trained at the schools of the Royal Academy, James Fittler was a skilled etcher and engraver, who established his reputation with the numerous plates he executed, many of them portraits, after artists such as Delamotte, de Loutherbourg, and Lorraine. In addition to his engravings, he contributed copious book illustrations to publications such as Dibdin's Aeds Althorpianae (1822). In 1800, Fittler became an associate at the Royal Academy, where he regularly exhibited throughout his life. Cf. Dictionary of National Biography; cf.         An Authentic Narrative of a Voyage performed by Captain Cook

London,: G. Robinson,, 1782.. Two volumes, octavo, with a folding chart and 21 engraved plates; a fine copy in contemporary gilt calf, expertly rebacked original spines laid down. First edition: an attractive set of this rare account - the second account to appear in English - of Cook's third voyage: 'an important supplement to the official account, which it preceded by two years' (Forbes).Ellis, surgeon's mate and talented amateur artist, sailed first on the Discovery and later on the Resolution. During the voyage he was esteemed by Captain Clerke as a 'very worthy young man'. On his return he was in financial straits and, despite the prohibition by the Admiralty of the publication of any unauthorised account of the voyage, sold his narrative to a London publisher for fifty guineas. It was published over his name, and was thus the first account of the expedition to acknowledge its authorship, earning the condemnation of Sir Joseph Banks, who wrote to him in January 1782 that 'I fear it will not in future be in my power to do what it might have been, had you asked and followed my advice'.Ellis' narrative contains much valuable information on Alaska, the Northwest Coast, and Hawaii, and the attractive engraved plates, after the author's drawings, include eight of Hawaii, two of Alaska, and three of the Northwest Coast. The plates show Ellis to have been a talented amateur artist, and represent a significant contribution to the graphic record of the voyage. They 'are among the earliest published on the Hawaiian Islands, Alaska, and the Northwest' (Hill). Choris' famous views did not appear until almost forty years later. Ellis' views of Hawaii provide the first general depictions of the islands, as Rickman's book, published in the previous year, showed only the death of Cook while Zimmermann's account was not illustrated. There is a chapter devoted to their visit to Van Diemen's Land in January 1777, in the course of which Ellis painted a famous watercolour view of Adventure Bay, now in the National Library of Australia.Ellis died in 1785 after a fall from the main mast of a ship lying at Ostend.Beaglehole, III, p. ccvii; Beddie, 1599; Davidson, 'A Book Collector's Notes', p. 66; Hill, 555; Hocken, pp. 20-21; Holmes, 42; Judd, 59; Kroepelien, 399; Lada-Mocarski, 35.

        Salmo Thymallus Latus

      - A very detailed hand colored copperplate engraving of a fish by Marcus Elieser Bloch from his series "Ichtyologie, ou Histoire Naturelle, Generale et Particuliere des Poissons", published in Berlin: 1782-85; and Paris: 1785-97. Some of these prints were embellished with silver and gold . This print measures approximately 11” x 18 1/4". Bloch’s ambitious work is the most famous, and certainly the most remarkable of all books on fish. Published in twelve volumes, each of the 432 hand-colored illustrations is identified in several languages. Many of the plates bear dedications to the patrons who paid to have a particular plate engraved and included in the collection. Bloch made every effort to be comprehensive in this study, searching out species from “the four corners of the globe.” He attributes his success in this undertaking to the help of many individuals, including the Emperor Frederick the Great, who ordered all of his regional finance departments to send Bloch “.all the types of fish of their provinces and to include instructive remarks.” Bloch’s introduction goes on to thank numerous individuals for the fish that they sent him from Denmark, England, Guinea, Surinam, New York, the Malabar coast in India, and other locations. Bloch’s monumental work reflects the growing interest in fishing as a leisure activity in the 18th century. But the lavishness and sheer magnitude of this work transcend mere trend to reveal an artist who was passionately involved with his subject matter. The silver and gold touches Bloch employed to mimic the reflective qualities of fish scales lend a dramatic sparkle to many of these impressive and richly colored images. Bloch’s Ichthyologie is a highly important work, and one of the most engaging of all 18th-century natural history works. Overall this print is in very good condition with some light foxing and staining.
