CARACCIOLI, Louis-Antoine de;
S.n., s.l. (Circa 1776), Cadre : 40x50cm ; dessin : 18x24cm, une feuille encadrée. - Italian scene: animated seaside with square tower Original pencil drawing showing an animated seaside scene. Modern black wooden frame. A drawing done during the journey the artist undertook with Sade in 1776. Jean-Baptiste Tierce (1737-1794), who studied at the School of Fine Arts in Rouen and subsequently at the Academy of Painting and Sculpture in Paris, quickly built a reputation as a landscapist for his views of the South of France and Italy. His paintings are in the Uffizi in Florence and several French museums. When, in December 1775, Sade left Rome for Naples, he was welcomed by the son-in-law of his friend Dr. Mesny, Jean-Baptiste Tierce, who at the time was working on commissions for Cardinal de Bernis. He found lodgings for the Marquis who "intends to see everything [of the region], learn everything, judge, admire, critique, love, hate, in short give himself over to the insatiable and passionate curiosity that takes him to museums, galleries, churches, palaces and libraries as well as grottoes, caves, catacombs, and right down to the very innards of volcanoes. He was not content merely to look at the various works of art and ancient and modern monuments; he also set out to observe the local mores, politics, religion, administration, and social life. The beauty of the women, the local traditions, the quality of plays, table manners, and the way people drank, dressed, prayed, and made their way in the world all interested him. He wanted to take in both the present and the past of t … [Click Below for Full Description]

[PENNANT]
Benj. White, 1776. With 280 engraved plates (3 folding & 1 folding page of sheet music) and 1 text illustration. Each volume with engraved title and second printed title, volume 4 with engraved title only, as issued. Contemporary mottled calf, re-backed. Several pencil notes in margins of volume 1. Some faint offset from plates, otherwise a handsome copy with an engraved bookplate in volume 4. Fourth edition of Pennant's meticulous study of British fauna, covering quadrupeds, birds, fish, reptiles and crustaceans. With over one hundred more plates than the first edition, Pennant's passion for careful classification and depiction of the natural world is clearly evident in this work. Written at a time when the study of exotic natural history was very popular in Europe, Pennant wished to show the beauty of England: "we are desirous of diverting the astonishment of our countrymen at the gifts of nature bestowed on other kingdoms, to a contemplation of those with which . . . she has enriched our own." (Preface). Though this work covers all sorts of animals found in England, it is especially valuable for is extensive coverage of both land and sea birds, with over 98 of the plates being dedicated thereto; 56 of the plates depict 163 different figures of sea-shells. Pennant (1726-98) was a distinguished English naturalist and traveler who wrote numerous books on natural history and travel, including two on the zoology of India and the Arctic. Elected a fellow of the Royal Society, he corresponded regularly with all of the leading naturalists of the day, including Linnaeus, Sir Jose … [Click Below for Full Description]

Amiot, Joseph Marie and others.
1776. 4to. 15 vols. Half-titles in vols. I-II and IX-XIV; two engraved portrait frontispieces: Qianlong Emperor (vol. 1) and M. Amiot (vol. 15), 151 (of 158) engraved plates (some folding), maps and tables (lacking 7 plates in vol. 2). Contemp. French mottled calf. Spines gilt. First edition of this monumental survey of Chinese life in the 18th century as witnessed by the Jesuit missionaries. This work by missionaries including Cibot, Bourgeois, Poirot, Ko and Yang comprises translations of classic Chinese works of law, maxims and proverbs, as well as essays on Chinese linguistics, current affairs and scientific observation. Volume VII is a reprint of Amiot's "Art militaire des Chinois" (Paris 1772), the first translation into a European language of the ancient Chinese military strategy, while volume XII, the "Vie de Confucius", was more complete and accurate than any previous text on the subject. - Amiot, the main contributor, went to China in 1740 and soon won the confidence of the Qianlong Emperor, remaining for the rest of his life in Beijing after the suppression of the Jesuits in 1773. Fluent in both Chinese and Tartar, his works were amongst the first to bring the philosophy and life of the East to the western world, and his "Dictionnaire tatare-mantchou-français" (Paris 1789) was the first to introduce these languages to Europe. Many of the engravings are based on Chinese designs sent by Amiot to Henri Bertin, minister in charge of Chinese affairs under Louis XVI. - Volumes 16 and 17 were published much later in 1814 and under a different imprint, and complete sets … [Click Below for Full Description]

(Sister of the late John Castaing)
London: Peter Smithson (And the Sister of the late John Castaing), 1776. Very good condition. An invaluable resource for economic and financial historians for the history of the London stock exchange. This scarce early broadsheet still carries the name of the man who first issued a list of stock and commodity prices in 1698-- John Castaing. His list, which he began in 1698, is the earliest evidence of trading in an organized form in London in marketable securities. After his death, his sister was allowed to continue publishing the list along with Peter Smithson. The broadsheet was published shortly after a group of London stock brokers erected their own building to buy and sell shares, in Sweeting's Alley (1773). The building, with coffee room above the dealing room, was called "the stock exchange". The reports, published twice a week on Tuesdays and Fridays, lists the values for 16 exchanges from Amsterdam to Dublin; the price of gold, cochineal (comodity used for dye), grain, and stocks for the preceding three days, the first three being Bank Stock, India Stock and South Sea Stock (the collapse of the South Sea Company bubble occurred in 1720, but the company remained in existence until 1853). The broadsheet measures 4 1/2 x 11", laid down, with irregular tear at top edge where it has been pulled down after being posted.

Hermes, Johann Timotheus).
Leipzig, Junius, 1774-1776. VOLTA, Alessandro.
[Colophon:] In Milano: da Giuseppe Marelli, [probably December]. FIRST EDITION. The scientific discovery of methane. Prior to 1776, there was virtually no distinction between the various inflammable gases, and chemists were in confusion over them. The discovery and identification of natural gas (marsh-gas, or methane) by Volta was the first step in their clarification. "The collection of inflammable marsh gas is described by Volta in some letters to Carlo Giuseppe Campi..." (Partington). He collected it by stirring the mud with a stick and letting the bubbles pass into an inverted bottle filled with water. He distinguished it from hydrogen by its azure blue flame and slower combustion. "The testing of his new gas -- new in source, flame, color and combustibility -- led him into the faddish field of eudiometry" (DSB). Volta's research led to his invention of an effective eudiometer, which provided the groundwork for one of the most important discoveries of the eighteenth century, the composition of water. This undated edition contains two letters from Volta to Campi, dated from Como the 14th and 21st November 1776. It is exceedingly rare, known in only a handful copies. Another edition, dated 1777 and containing five further letters, was published by Marelli a few weeks later. See Partington III, p. 814, Duveen 606, Neville p. 593, and Cole 1321, all describing the dated edition as the first, and presumably unaware of the present edition.Small 8vo, 16 pages. Caption title. Philadelphia: Joseph Crukshank, 1776. First edition. Pamphlet. Very Good. First printing. Scarce. OCLC locates only six examples in book format, one of which rests in the Library Of Congress. 28 pp. intact and complete but apparently disbound from a larger volume. Small chip top corner of p. 25/26 not affecting any text and a somewhat larger chip top corner of p.27/28 in the same area affecting one or two words. Eulogy delivered before the Continental Congress on the occasion of the passing from smallpox in Philadelphia of Samuel Ward of Rhode Island. In addition to serving in the First Continental Congress, Ward had been Governor of Rhode Island and was a founder of Brown College. He was governor at the time of the passing of the Stamp Act in 1765 and was the only colonial Royal Governor to openly oppose it. A stunch patriot, he undoubtedly would have been a signer of the Declaration of Independence but died some three months before it was adopted.
