Three of his other hymns: "A Debtor to Mercy Alone," "Deathless Principle, Arise" and "Object of My First Desire" - are still occasionally sung today, though all three are far less popular than his "Rock of Ages"

David MacBride
T. Becket and T. Cadell, in the Strand, T. Lowndes, Fleet-Street, W. Woodfall. 1776 - 1776 third (final) edition. Book has condition issues. There is good news and bad news. Bad news first. Sometime in last 60 years this volume was bound in black buckram and blank end papers removed. NOTE: Missing title page. Text block resewn too tightly causing plate 4 and page 244/45 to be partially cut at hinge. Pencil marks on half title of essay 1. Now the good news. All else complete; 6 plates; 296 pages; minor foxing; no other torn hinges. More good news: I am including modern paperback reprints (Ecco) of both the second and third editions. MacBride is famously known for his very wrong call on scurvy. His thinking represented the majority medical opinion of his time. See "Scurvy" by Stephen Bown for the full story. A scarce historically important item. Please inquire if you have any questions. See scans of the books you will receive. Note: Included in Ships & Islands catalog for the critical role scurvy had in maritime history. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

RECKITT, William.
London, James Phillips, 1776. Small 8vo. Contemporary sheep, spine with raised bands; pp. 204; rebacked, retaining the original spine, new morocco lettering-piece, light wear to extremities, apart from light spotting to title a rather clean and fresh copy. First edition. William Reckitt (1706-1769), member of a Quaker family based in Lincolnshire and Yorkshire 'was apprenticed by a Friend for a while and then set up as a weaver in the Wainfleet district and married Ellen Maw in 1731. They went on to have nine children though several of them did not survive childhood. In 1744 William Reckitt began a travelling ministry and in 1756 he embarked on a long journey across France and out to visit Friends in America and the West Indies before returning in 1760. From his experiences he wrote Some Account of the Life and Gospel Labours of William Reckitt and editions of this contain printed copies of his letters home. The text contains detailed descriptions of the American colonies and is interesting for its anti-slavery content. In the West Indies he saw such cruelty that "it raised such a just indignation in my heart, that I used great freedom of speech sometimes in conversation. Any contrition he encountered he took as a sign that `the Lord is rising ... in judgement in the hearts of those negro keepers, shewing them the practice is evil" (Reckitt, William Reckitt, pp.9-49; Reckitt, Some account of the Life...of William Reckitt, pp. 176-7). William Reckitt made a second trip in 1764 during which his wife died. He returned to Lincolnshire and died himself in 1769' (Records of Isaac … [Click Below for Full Description]

HAMILTON WILLIAM.
Ottimo esemplare.Gouaches napoletane..., cat. Della mostra, Napoli 1985, pagg. 224-225; G. Pane - V. V … [Click Below for Full Description]

NUMAN, Alexander.
KVK & WorldCat (3 separately listed copies apparently taken from the proceedings); not in BMC NH; Cole Library; Landwehr, Cooured Plates; Nissen, ZBI. Rare separate issue of Numan's study of pregnant horses, sheep and especially cows that fail to give birth after the normal gestation period, either as a result of or causing the death of the fetus. He also discusses the dangers to the mother. The illustrations show calf and lamb fetuses taken from slaughtered animals or naturally aborted, as well as the uterus and kidneys of a sheep with a long dead lamb fetus. The illustrations are very finely engraved, most with a note indicating the scale, by Daniel Veelwaard, probably the elder (1776-1851), and the whole luxuriously produced on excellent paper (the plates on wove paper by Jan Kool & Co.) with generous margins. The present essay appeared both in the Nieuwe Verhandelingen der eerste klasse van het Koninklijk-Nederlandse Instituut van Wetenschappen , vol. 3 (1831), pp. 27-71, and in the present much rarer separate publication, where only the plates refer to the journal. It appears to have been overlooked in the medical and zoological literature. In fine condition and virtually untrimmed. The wrappers are slightly damaged at the spine, but still very good. A beautiful copy of a rare and well-illustrated essay by a pioneering veterinary researcher.
