Edición de D. Felipe Zuñiga y Ontiveros, Reimpresa en México, 1776. "Large Sections Devoted To The Indians Of Michoacan". 8vo., modern vellum. A COMPREHENSIVE ACCOUNT OF THE ORGANIZATION OF THE BISHOPRIC OF MICHOACAN are provided by these Ordenanzas, originally published in 1685 and brought up to date in this revised edition by Casillas y Cabrera, Oficial mayor de la Secretaría del Obispado. They contain both the Ordenanzas issued in 1642 by Fr. Marcos Ramirez de Prado, bishop of Michoacan 1639-1666, and the much more extensive and detailed Ordenanzas issued by Juan de Ortega Montañez, bishop of Michoacan, Inquisitor of the Tribunal del Santo Oficio de México and Viceroy of New Spain (27/02/1696 a 18/12/1696). Both Ramirez and Ortega Montañez were concerned with the relationship between the clergy and the secular authorities, the reform of abuses and the need for the clergy to be above reproach, specially in their dealings with the Indians. Both bishops devote special sections to the natives: "De los naturales y como se han de tratar" (Ramírez, 36-40 pp.) and "Indios, su enseñanza de doctrina, y otros puntos a ellos pertenecientes (Ortega Montañez 164-194 pp.). Their instructions were designed both to provide protection for the Indians - Ramirez for example prohibits the purchase of land from Indians so there could be no question of the clergy having intimidated them - and to ensure their spiritual welfare. Procedures were laid down for dealing with natives who failed to fulfil their religious obligations or resisted indoctrination for themselves or their children. Francis Noel Clarke Mundy
Lichfield - John Jackson 1776 - The very scarce, privatelyissued first edition of Francis Noel Clarke Mundy's poem, Needwood Forest. The text finishes on page 48 though this seems to have always been the case for this printing. This appears to be an alternate and unrecorded printing of the first edition. A slight mystery. In verse, with other poems in reply by Anna Seward, Erasmus Darwin, and others. Francis Noel Clarke Mundy 1739 1815 was a poet who published with Anna Seward and Erasmus Darwin. His most noted work was written to defend Needwood Forest which was enclosed at the beginning of the 19th century. Condition: In a contemporary calf binding. Externally, rather worn, with rubbing, marks, and slight loss to the extremities. Rear joint has failed, and board is detached; front joint is tender, and held by one cord only. Internally, generally firmly bound although strained in places. Pages are bright, though with some foxing to the first and last few pages. Overall: FAIR. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

BOUGAINVILLE, Louis Antoine de (1729-1811)

Bougainville's voyage - the first French circumnavigation - was of immense importance in terms of the impetus it provided to a renewal of France's colonial empire following territorial losses suffered to Britain in the Seven Years' War: it opened up the Pacific for French expansion. Yet what cannot be overstated is the impact that Bougainville's own vivid and romanticised descriptions of the Pacific - specifically Tahiti - had on the French public imagination, her writers, artists and thinkers. The utopian ideal of the noble savage living in an Earthly Paradise owes much to Bougainville's response to his encounter with the Tahitian culture and landscape. Even though he was not the first European to reach Tahiti - the Englishman Samuel Wallis had done so one year earlier - Bougainville's account is fundamental to the formation of the European romantic vision of the South Seas. Bougainville had the imprimatur of the French government to undertake a voyage of exploration which would seek to gather scientific, geographical and cultural information. For example, his narrative includes the firs … [Click Below for Full Description]

Plate : This plate shows a portrait of William Knighton (1776 - 1836), private secretary to King George IV. Mezzotint engraving on a vellin type paper. Description: This antique print was published by Charles Turner in London, 1823.Artists and Engravers: This plate by Charles Turner after Thomas Lawrence. Charles Turner (1773-1857) was an English mezzotint engraver and draughtsman. Through his mother's influence he had access to the famous gallery at Blenheim Palace. Turner moved to London in about 1789, was apprenticed to the engraver John Jones, enrolled in the Royal Academy Schools and worked for Alderman John Boydell, the important print publisher. Turner was skilled in stipple and aquatint as well as mezzotint, his diverse talents producing a large range of subjects covering topography and genre. His main interest, though, was portraiture, and the greater part of the more than six hundred plates he created during his career, were portraits. His close friendship with J.M.W. Turner, led to his engraving much of the artist's work, and to his engraving twenty-four of the plates for Liber Studiorum. He engraved many of the finest Henry Raeburn portraits, including Sir Walter Scott. A remarkable set of his engravings, "The Rivers of England", published between 1823 and 1827, confirmed his great ability as a landscape artist. He was elected an associate of the Royal Academy in 1828. Condition: Good. General age-related toning. Please study scan carefully. MABLY (BONNOT, ABBÉ DE) GABRIEL
A Amsterdam, s.e, 1776.

[Click Below for Full Description]

Modern black wooden frame. A drawing done during the journey the artist undertook with Sade in 1776. Jean-Baptiste Tierce (1737-1794), who studied at the School of Fine Arts in Rouen and subsequently at the Academy of Painting and Sculpture in Paris, quickly built a reputation as a landscapist for his views of the South of France and Italy. His paintings are in the Uffizi in Florence and several French museums. When, in December 1775, Sade left Rome for Naples, he was welcomed by the son-in-law of his friend Dr. Mesny, Jean-Baptiste Tierce, who at the time was working on commissions for Cardinal de Bernis. He found lodgings for the Marquis who "intends to see everything [of the region], learn everything, judge, admire, critique, love, hate, in short give himself over to the insatiable and passionate curiosity that takes him to museums, galleries, churches, palaces and libraries as well as grottoes, caves, catacombs, and right down to the very innards of volcanoes. He was not content merely to look at the various works of art and ancient and modern monuments; he also set out to observe the local mores, politics, religion, administration, and social life. CHASTELLUX, F.J. DE.)

Second edition, the work had been first launched in Amsterdam in 1772 before a French publisher dared to bring it on the market in France. That French publication was simultaneously with the present publication. 'Chastellux's analysis of American society was both more searching and influential. A member of the French Academy, one of the founders of the social sciences, and major general on Rochambeau's staff, he was easily the foremost intellectual in the French forces in America. In an earlier work, De la Félicité, he had sought to determine whether "society is susceptible, if not of perfection, at least amelioration," that is, of an increase in human felicity. (.) The only possible answer was in social reform. The function of government, he posited, was to achieve "the greatest hapiness of the greatest number." Man must create through the free and enlightened use of his reason a liberal government midway between the extremes of pure democracy and pure absolutism, based upon a true understanding of economic principles (Physiocracy), which would guarantee a high standard of living, adequate leisure, and the right to private property. In this earlier work Chastellux had cited America as an example of man's ability to progress through liberty, reason, equ … [Click Below for Full Description]

Bassompierre, 1776. First edition: Treatise on ancient dress among the Egyptians, Greeks, Persians, Jews, Romans, and other people. The author, a Flemish artist also known as Andries Cornelis Lens, came to the study of antiquarian clothing by way of his classically inspired focus in painting. Illustrated with 51 copper-engraved plates done by Pitre Martenasie, this is an "Ouvrage estimé" according to Brunet (who seemingly mistakenly cites 57 engravings as opposed to the 51 given by von Lipperheide, described in institutional holdings, and present here).

PIERIE, William (fl. late 18th century) - NEWTON, James (1748-1804).
[London]: J. F. W. des Barres, 1776. Single sheet, float mounted and framed, (21 ¼ x 32 inches). Fine copper engraving. First edition. Engraved by Newton after the drawing by British soldier and artist Pierie. "Some sense of Boston's early geography as a peninsula is gained from a British officer's rendering of it not long before the outbreak of hostilities with England. The view, taken from Dorchester to the southwest, embraces a wide ring of the town's bucolic surroundings while clearly showing its peninsular formation. It was connected to the mainland by a narrow neck that just prevented it from being and island. By the end of the next century, the insular quality of this strategic spit of land had already begun to erode when new routes of access by land were created. As the population increased and space grew scarce on the peninsula, not only were landfill projects steadily undertaken, but Boston's three large hills were cut down to provide the landfill. The hills formed a high rugged mass extending through the center of the peninsula, known as the Trimountain In this carefully drawn 'Atlantic Neptune' engraving, an image of the Trimountain has been nicely preserved. Visible on one of its hills (originally called Sentry Hill) is the beacon erected by order of the General Court in 1634 to warn the inhabitants of any danger. Known as Beacon Hill today, this topographic elevation, massively cut down, serves as a pale reminder of Boston's earlier humped formation. "In 1773, English drawings and engravings focused on Boston for several reasons. Boston was not only one of Engl … [Click Below for Full Description]
