HENLEY, David (1749-1823)
1776. Most famous as George Washington's spymaster, this famously hot-tempered Massachusetts Regiment colonel set fire to Charleston in 1776 when it was occupied by the British, stabbed an unarmed prisoner of war in 1777 while commander of a POW camp in Cambridge (acquitted in court martial) and was challenged to a duel by British General Burgoyne and failed to show up (though others claim Henley challenged Burgoyne); chosen by General Washington as spymaster in 1778, he successfully gathered hush-hush data about British troop movements, their numbers, arms and such; in 1793 President Washington named him Department of War Agent for the Southwest Territory, charged with controlling the Native Americans of that region as Superintendent of Indian Affairs. ADS, 1p, 7 3/4" X 4½", Knoxville, TN, 1797 January 25. Very good. Light age toning. "Borrowed Sergt. Throp three Bushls Corn which I promise to return," penned large and bold in brown ink and signed with "Dept. War" added beneath. As Agent for the Department of War, Henley also served as paymaster and quartermaster for local troops and militia, in which capacity he authorized purchase of supplies such as corn ("return" here meaning "replace"). An attractive example of this uncommon autograph. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

HAWKINS (Sir John):
London: Printed for T. Payne and Son..., 1776, 1776. FIRST EDITION. 5 volumes bound in 10. 4to (235 x 195 mms.), pp. [x], lxxxiv, 259, 251 - 465 [466 blank]; [ii], 250, 251 - 544; [ii], 234, 235 - 535 [536 blank]; [ii], 254, 255 - 548; [ii], 258, 259 - 483 [483 - 511 Index, 512 Errata], engraved frontispiece (off-setting onto title-page), engraved portrait of Hawkins and 5 other engraved plates in volume 1, numerous musical illustrations and engravings as part of registration throughout all 5 volumes, contemporary half calf, spines richly gilt, red and black morocco labels, marbled boards (slightly rubbed); some slight wear to bindings, but generally a very good and attractive set, somewhat curiously bound and with less than generous margins (a large-paper copy is 280 x 255 mms.). From the Easton Neston Library, with library label for shelf mark and the armorial bookplate of Sir Thomas Hesketh, Bart., Rufford Hall Lancashire on the front paste-down end-paper. Sir John Hawkins (1719 - 1789) was famously dubbed, according to Fanny Burney as a "most unclubbable man"; in the same conversation Johnson said that he believed Hawkins to be "an honest man at the bottom; but to be sure he is penurious, and he is mean, and it must be owned he has a degree of brutality, and a tendency to savageness, that cannot easily be defended...." Nevertheless, he admired Hawkins' history of music, though Johnson himself seems to have had cloth ears. Much of the research for this work was done in the British Museum, and Hawkins had an extensive collection of manuscripts as well. The work attracted … [Click Below for Full Description]

[PENNANT]
Warrington: Benj. White, 1776. With 280 engraved plates (3 folding & 1 folding page of sheet music) and 1 text illustration. Each volume with engraved title and second printed title, volume 4 with engraved title only, as issued. Contemporary mottled calf, re-backed. Several pencil notes in margins of volume 1. Some faint offset from plates, otherwise a handsome copy with an engraved bookplate in volume 4. Fourth edition of Pennant's meticulous study of British fauna, covering quadrupeds, birds, fish, reptiles and crustaceans. With over one hundred more plates than the first edition, Pennant's passion for careful classification and depiction of the natural world is clearly evident in this work. Written at a time when the study of exotic natural history was very popular in Europe, Pennant wished to show the beauty of England: "we are desirous of diverting the astonishment of our countrymen at the gifts of nature bestowed on other kingdoms, to a contemplation of those with which . . . she has enriched our own." (Preface). Though this work covers all sorts of animals found in England, it is especially valuable for is extensive coverage of both land and sea birds, with over 98 of the plates being dedicated thereto; 56 of the plates depict 163 different figures of sea-shells. Pennant (1726-98) was a distinguished English naturalist and traveler who wrote numerous books on natural history and travel, including two on the zoology of India and the Arctic. Elected a fellow of the Royal Society, he corresponded regularly with all of the leading naturalists of the day, inclu … [Click Below for Full Description]

Steyr, Abraham Wimmer, 1776. (20), 280 SS. Mit gestochener Titelvignette (Sternwarte des Stifts Kremsmünster) und 4 gest. Tafeln. 4to-Druck auf halbbrüchig gefalteten, ungefalzten Rohbögen. Ca. 390:260 mm. Erste Ausgabe. [Click Below for Full Description]

DES BARRES, JOSEPH FREDERICK WALLET (1721-1824) and SAMUEL HOLLAND
London: J. F. W. Des Barres for The Atlantic Neptune, 1776. Large engraved chart from Des Barres' Atlantic Neptune on two sheets of laid paper, joined, each bearing "J Bates" watermark. 43x31 inches sheet size, nice margins; contemporary hand-color in outline; slightest offsetting, a superior copy. State 4 of 7. Fine chart depicting the waters between New Bedford and Martha's Vineyard. Buzzards Bay and the Vineyard Sound including the Elizabeth Islands and the western half of Martha's Vineyard. Showing much more on-shore information than is typical for a Des Barres chart, there are details of property boundaries, structures, even a road from Menemshaw Pond to Tisbury. Native names throughout remain largely unchanged today. Joseph Des Barres was born in Switzerland in 1721 and educated in Basel before emigrating to England and entering the Royal Military College where he learned engineering and the art of surveying. In 1756, Des Barres was commissioned a Lieutenant in the Royal American Regiment and dispatched to North America. He served in America during the Seven Years War under Colonel Bouquet, Lord Howe and General Amherst, and participated in the Quebec campaign as General Wolfe's engineer. Though Des Barres was responsible for the surveys done of Nova Scotia and the Isle of Sable, the surveying of the coastline of what became the United States was undertaken by Major Samuel Holland, a Dutchman, who joined the British army during the French and Indian War as an engineer, and became ultimately Surveyor General for North America. Firenze, nella stamperia di Francesco Moucke, 1776. In-folio; 2 cc., 122 pp. e 15 tavole incise in rame. Legatura coeva in mezza pelle. Bell'esemplare. Rara prima edizione italiana. Opera di Giacomo Paolo Lelorgne, questa traduzione si colloca nel contesto del vasto e profondo dibattito sviluppatosi in Toscana in quegli anni sul rilancio di arti e manifatture, favorito anche dalle riforme leopoldine. Lotter, Tobias (Conrad)
THE MOST IMPORTANT AND INFLUENTIAL MAP OF NEW ENGLAND PUBLISHED DURING THE BRITISH COLONIAL PERIOD "A Map Of The Most Inhabited Part Of New England Containing The Provinces Of Massachusets Bay and New Hampshire. With the Colonies of Conecticut and Rhode Island." Copper engraving in four joined sheets, published by Tobias Lotter of Augsburg in 1776. With original hand colouring. Size: 97,5 x 101,7 cm. Fine example of the large format map of New England and Long Island by the 18th century cartographer Bradock Mead (aka John Green). Bradock Mead's map of New England is generally considered the single most important and influential map of New England published during the British Colonial period. Its importance was such that it was revised and reissued well into the 1790s, and over this period it served as a primary source for leading European and American mapmakers. First issued in 1755, the map provided the largest-scale and most detailed and accurate portrait of the region to date. The map was significantly revised in the 1760s, including a complete re-engraving of much of northern New England and New York and addition of the inset map of Boston. These changes are so extensive that the map, viewed in its proper context, needs to be viewed for historical purposes as a new map. The changes included major improvements to the natural geography of the region (changes to the New Hampshire Lakes Region are particularly striking) , the introduction of settlements in central and northern New Hampshire, and the division of Vermont into dozens of "Wentworth Grant" towns. The map depicts … [Click Below for Full Description]
