Lotter, Tobias (Conrad)
THE MOST IMPORTANT AND INFLUENTIAL MAP OF NEW ENGLAND PUBLISHED DURING THE BRITISH COLONIAL PERIOD "A Map Of The Most Inhabited Part Of New England Containing The Provinces Of Massachusets Bay and New Hampshire. With the Colonies of Conecticut and Rhode Island." Copper engraving in four joined sheets, published by Tobias Lotter of Augsburg in 1776. With original hand colouring. Size: 97,5 x 101,7 cm. Fine example of the large format map of New England and Long Island by the 18th century cartographer Bradock Mead (aka John Green). Bradock Mead's map of New England is generally considered the single most important and influential map of New England published during the British Colonial period. Its importance was such that it was revised and reissued well into the 1790s, and over this period it served as a primary source for leading European and American mapmakers. First issued in 1755, the map provided the largest-scale and most detailed and accurate portrait of the region to date. The map was significantly revised in the 1760s, including a complete re-engraving of much of northern New England and New York and addition of the inset map of Boston. These changes are so extensive that the map, viewed in its proper context, needs to be viewed for historical purposes as a new map. The changes included major improvements to the natural geography of the region (changes to the New Hampshire Lakes Region are particularly striking) , the introduction of settlements in central and northern New Hampshire, and the division of Vermont into dozens of "Wentworth Grant" towns. The map depicts … [Click Below for Full Description]

Disbound, inserted into marbled wrappers, bookplate “Knoll Ex Libris”. § Third edition printed in the same year as the first (and first American) edition. A pamphlet of considerable interest and importance: Reese notes “Price was a well-known British Presbyterian minister and the author of several notable books about moral philosophy and economics. He was particularly friendly with a number of Americans, and vigorously argued their part in the British debate over colonial taxation and government. This is one of the most influential political pamphlets written by an Englishman who sympathized with the American colonies. "It is said that the encouragement derived from this book had no inconsiderable share in determining the Americans to declare their independence" - DNB. PARADISI (AGOSTINO):
Bologna Dalla Stamperia di Lelio dalla Volpe, 1776. FIRST EDITION. 8vo, 186 x 114 mms., pp. [5] 6 - 85 [86 blank, 87 errata, 88 - 90 blank], engraved portrait of Montecuccoli as frontispiece, text within borders, contemporary sheepskin, gilt borders to a Greek key design on covers; bookplate crudely removed from front paste-down end-paper, top and base of spine slightly worn, some slight general wear to binding, but a very good copy. The Italian poet and economist Agostino Paradisi (1736 - 1783) was a prolific author, and this tribute to Count Raimondo Montecuccoli (1609 - 1780) is very finely printed and was frequently reprinted. The preface is by the publisher, and the work includes Lettre du comte Paradisi à sa majesté le roi de Prusse, en lui envoyant son éloge du prince Montecuccoli. - Réponse de sa majesté. Montecuccoli was himself a distinguished military general: "Unequalled as a master of 17th-century warfare, Montecuccoli excelled in the art of fortification and siege, march and countermarch, and cutting his enemy's lines of communications. In advocating standing armies, he clearly foresaw future trends in the military field" (Wikiepedia).

BURNEY, Charles
London: Printed for the Author. 1776, 1782, 1789, 1789. First edition. Four volumes. 4to (275x215mm). pp. Vol. I. xx, [xii], 522, [1] errata, 9 plates some folding; Vol. II. [iv], 598, [1] corrections and additions, 2 plates; Vol. III. xii, 622, [12] index and errata; Vol. IV. [iv], 688, [14] index and errata. Full contemporary mottled calf with double gilt fillet borders to upper and lower covers. Expertly rebacked in the 20th century, five raised bands, six compartments decorated with simple flower pattern in gilt. Contrasting red morocco label, title in gilt. Gilt dentelles. Bookplate of Kennet of the Dene to the front pastedown. Rubbing to joints and to the corners and to the head and foot of the spine and some slight scuffing to the edges of the boards. The contents are in excellent condition, clean and tight with a little browning in places. Overall a very nice set of one of the most detailed, scholarly and exhaustive studies of the history and theory of western music from the Ancient Greeks to the eighteenth century. The plates are particularly good: three of them are engravings by Bartolozzi after G.B. Cipriani. There are extensive and beautifully printed musical examples throughout all four volumes allowing the musical reader to hear the works which Burney describes with such enthusiasm. This study was a huge undertaking. As Burney himself says in his conclusion: "a work that has been thirty years in meditation, and more than twenty in writing and printing". Winckelmann, Johann Joachim.
Vienna, Academy of Arts, 1776. 4to (29 : 22 cm). (12), LXXII, 881, (56) p. and an individual title-leaf to the second part. (Bound up c. 1814 without 1 leaf of privilege expired in 1786.) With 2 engraved title vignettes and 20 large text engravings executed by students of the academy. Second edition of Winckelmann?s masterpiece (PMM no. 210), the first to combine the main work of 1764, the Anmerkungen of 1767, and numerous emendations observed until his death. He was writing down instructions for the printer of the new edition (preface, p. XXII), when the murderer?s knife hit him in Trieste on 8 June 1768. His last complete sentence read: Es darf im Texte nichts verändert werden, auch sollen keine fremden Anmerkungen hinzukommen (The text must remain unchanged, with no additions by others). The editor of the manuscript, Friedrich Just Riedel, has much been blamed for strictly obeying Winckelmann?s last will, even in the case of apparent mistakes. Actually the splendidly printed academy edition remained the only to reflect the author?s final working steps. - According to an autograph note on front fly-leaf, the present copy was purchased in Vienna by the medievalist and bibliophile Joseph von Lassberg (1770-1855) on 29 October 1814, presumably from the academy?s unsold stock. The Imperial privilege granted for ten years had become invalid for long and needed to be removed from copies bound up and sold thus late. - Ruppert, Winckelmann-Bibliographie, p. 16. - Spine with crease marks. Some soiling by printer?s ink to first title-page and to p. 879, else a crisp, uncut and of c … [Click Below for Full Description]

London: J. Almon [vols. I-III] & G. Corral [vol. IV], 1772 & 1776. 4 volumes, octavo (205 x 126 mm). Contemporary sprinkled calf for vols. I-III, red morocco labels, direct numbered gilt, volume IV in contemporary sprinkled sheep to match, slightly smaller lettering and numbering gilt, all volumes with red sprinkled edges. Contemporary ink ownership inscription to front free endpaper of vol. II. Foot of spines soiled, volume 3 with single wormhole to head, extremities lightly rubbed, a little surface wear and light marking to covers, front free endpaper of vol. I loosening; a very attractive set. First editions of the complete set of Joseph Marshall's Travels, with the fourth volume, originally unplanned, following four years after the initial publication. The work is based on the author's purported travels through the respective countries. The Monthly Review, a contemporary literary journal, strongly implied the work to be a fraudulent concoction, with Joseph Marshall an invented person, and his account plagiarised from other printed sources. John Almon, the publisher, stated that he received the manuscript from the author's friend, the author himself being serendipitously out of the country. Sometime afterwards a notice appeared in the newspapers that Joseph Marshall had died, and he has since not been traced. It remains unknown whether the author and his writings were genuine or an invention. If fraudulent, it was one of many similarly false travels books written in the 18th century, with literary hacks able to earn a few pounds by writing bogus travel accounts with mate … [Click Below for Full Description]

London: B. White, 1776. First edition. pp. (8), 1-136, 50 hand-colored lithograph plates + Pp. (8), 50 monochrome lithograph plates, pp. 1-136. Early 20th century full calf leather, spine with five raised bands, lettered in gilt in one compartment on a red morocco title label and with elaborate gilt decorations in the other five compartments, base of spine of each volume has gilt-lettered date of publication, 1776, the word PROOF appears in gilt on the uncolored copy at the spine base, front and rear boards with gilt decorations around the borders and with central gilt motif, lg 4to (12 x 10 inches; 310 x 252 mm). The text of both volumes in simultaneously presented in parallel in French and in English. The page edges are deckled (untrimmed) in the monochrome proof copy. Zimmer (p. 102), states: "Although the book was published in London, the French text and title is given precedence over the English text and title." Brown's work, a kind of supplement to George Edward's A Natural History of Uncommon Birds, was based on specimens in the natural history collections of Marmaduke Tunstall, Thomas Pennant, and others. Pennant himself wrote of the text and supplied many of the drawings belonging to Gideon Loten, the former Dutch governor of Ceylon, a significant contribution that he felt was not properly acknowledged by Brown in the preface of the work. Pennant had previously employed Brown for two of the plates in his British Zoology. A Dane by birth, Brown was also known as a flower painter, exhibiting at the Royal Academy from 1770 to 1791. First edition. A treatise on social organization and political economy which shows a remarkable resemblance to the theories of the Physiocrats. Schmid(t) (1720-1805) was born in Avenstein, Switzerland, and long served as councillor to the Duke of Saxe-Weimar. He was in contact with many of the French enlightened philosophers of his time, including Voltaire, Diderot and d'Alembert. In the present book the author states that a flourishing agriculture is a distinguishing mark for the prosperity of a nation, as is an abundant population whose every member feels at ease. He favours private property and inequality of wealth as inherent to the natural order, but rejects luxury and pleads for direct rather than indirect taxation. Moreover, he argues for the promotion of the arts and sciences, for education for all classes of society, which entails freedom of thought, speech and writing, and for the establishment of a lasting peace. - Slight flaw to vellum at foot of front hinge, otherwise fine. London, B. White, T. Cadell, & P. Elmsly, 1776. First Edition; Demy 4to; pp. xd, [ii], vii, [ii], 150, [2], with 78 engraved plates; modern period style full leather binding, the spine with raised bands, with blue gilt lettered labels, occasional pale spots, small piece lost at one plate margin, text in Latin, good copy. The Ivo Hammet copy with his name stamp on front endpaper. The First Botanical Work Relating To Australia. When Sir Joseph Banks withdrew from Cook's second voyage, the Admiralty appointed a German scientist of English descent, Johann Reinhold Forster, as naturalist. He took with him his son, Georg Adam Forster, as assistant and later engaged the Swedish naturalist, Anders Sparrman, at the Cape. The Forsters were difficult and unpopular members of the expedition and on their return a dispute arose concerning the publication of the official account of the voyage. J.R. Forster claimed that he had been promised the writing of the account, whereas Lord Sandwich, First Lord of the Admiralty, determined that Cook should write it. Despite Sandwich's attempts at compromise, Forster was eventually barred from any part in the official account and there ensured a series of books and publications from and against Forster, over all of which hung the angry shadow of that dispute. Although the "Characteres.." has not been highly regarded for its science, it is "Important to the history and science of botany, as it contains a large number of new generic and specific names relating to the plants of Australia and Polynesia vegetation" (Hill). (Louis XVI of France).
4to. 287, (1) pp. With fine vignette on title-page and at the head of p. 3. Contemporary full marbled calf, spine attractively gilt, gilt triple-fillets on both covers. All edges red. First and only edition. A collection of official documents relating to Turgot's dissolution of the craft guilds and their partial revival after Turgot's fall as minister of finance. The famous preamble has been recognized as among the most important statements in political economy: here, Turgot declares man's fundamental right to work: "God, by giving to man wants, and making his recourse to work necessary to supply them, has made the right to work the property of every man; and this property is the first, the most sacred and the most imprescriptible of all". It has been noted that this preamble includes arguments against trade corporations similar to those used in the same year by Adam Smith in the tenth chapter of the first book of his "Wealth of Nations". The function of the guilds or jurandes was to maintain the interests of their members by limiting the admission of new members, regulating the length of apprenticeship and the issue of "lettres de maitrises" to those who qualified for membership. Though the system did offer some guarantees of consistent quality, they also prevented free competition and caused increases in prices. In early 1776 Turgot presented his famous six edicts to the King. The first contained the abolishment of the corvees, the second, third, fifth and sixth the suppression of various taxes and tolls. The important fourth edict contains the suppression of the guilds. … [Click Below for Full Description]
