Political tracts. Containing, The False Alarm. Falkland Islands. The Patriot; and, Taxation No Tyranny

      W. Strahan & T. Cadell, London 1776 - Octavo; early repair to front hinge and spine, in contemporary sheep. First collected edition of these political pamphlets, published anonymously.Probably the most famous of the four is the last, 'Taxation no Tyranny; An Answer to the Resolutions and Address of the American Congress', a scathing attack on those 'zealots of anarchy' who have 'denied to the Parliament of Britain the right of taxing the American Colonies'. Bitterly opposed to the War of Independence, Johnson inveighs with a sustained denunciation which includes his famous quip 'If slavery be thus fatally contagious, how is it that we hear the loudest yelps for liberty among the drivers of negroes?'.         Nuove osservazioni microscopiche.

      - Napoli, con Licenza de'Superiori, 1776. 4to (210 x 165mm). pp. viii, 135, (1), with 14 folded engraved plates. Contemporary half calf (ends of spine worn). First edition of an important and rare work on microscopy. Giovanni Maria della Torre (1710-1782) was an Italian scientist and corresponding member of the academies of Paris, Berlin and the Royal Society of London. He perfectioned the oculars of telescopes and succeeded, like Toricelli, in constructing powerful miscroscopes by using small glass globes. "Della Torre was a man of wide culture and of wide scientific curiosity. His studies led him into the history of philosophy, optics, and microscopy (he made several new histological identifications with an excellent compound microscope that he himself had built)". (DSB). The first 44 pages deal with the construction of different kinds of microscopes, illustrated with 2 detailed plates. The rest of the work deals with objects observed through the microscope.Provenance: Small oval stamp of Marcel Bekus on verso of title.Poggendorff II, 1118. [Attributes: First Edition]

Mayer states in the introduction to the Pomona Franconica that he had first intended to produce only a catalogue raisonné of the different fruit cultivated in the court garden and to illustrate it with 'illuminated' copper-engravings, but that he was then persuaded by 'lovers of gardening' to write a systematic treatise on the cultivation of fruit trees.

A Paris De l'Imprimerie Royale, 1776.       Oxford: 'Printed at The Clarendon Press . Sold by J. Dodsley, J. Robson, T. Cadell, P. Elmsley, and G. Robinson, London; and by D. Prince, Oxford', 1776. - 4to (261 x 219mm), pp. 4 (title, verso blank, plates and references to plan), xiv (contents), [2 (errata and advertisement)], 304; 7 engraved maps and plans by J. Barber and T. Kitchin, 2 folding; occasional light spotting or marking, light offsetting from engravings onto text, one folding map with skilfully repaired tears; contemporary speckled half roan over marbled boards, spine gilt in compartments, gilt morocco lettering-piece in one, red-sprinkled edges; slightly rubbed and scuffed, traces of bookplate on upper pastedown, nonetheless very good, clean copy; provenance: David Rhys-Phillips (20th-century booklabel on upper pastedown).First edition. The classical scholar, traveller, and author Chandler (bap. 1737, d. 1810) was educated at Winchester College and Queen's College, Oxford, and awarded a demyship at Magdalen College in 1757. Following the publication of an annotated collection of fragments by Tyrtaeus, Simonides, Theognis, Alcaeus, Sappho, and other Greek poets in 1759, Chandler published a catalogue of the Arundel marbles in 1763 as Marmora Oxoniensis. 'In 1764 Chandler was introduced to the Society of Dilettanti by Robert Wood, editor of The Ruins of Palmyra, and was commissioned by the society to undertake a tour of exploration in Asia Minor and Greece in the first independent mission funded by the society. As treasurer he was given command of the expedition, and was accompanied by Nicholas Revett [.] and by the watercolour painter William Edmund Pars. They were instructed to make Smyrna their headquarters and thence "to make excursions to the several remains of antiquity in that neighbourhood"; to make exact plans and measurements; to make "accurate drawings of the bas-reliefs and ornaments"; and to copy all inscriptions, all the while keeping "minute diaries". Having embarked from Gravesend on 9 June 1764 the party spent about a year in Asia Minor [.]. On 20 August 1765 they left Smyrna for Athens, where Chandler gloomily noted that the Parthenon was in danger of being completely destroyed. He bought two fragments of the Parthenon frieze that had been built into houses in the town and was presented with a trunk that had fallen from one of the metopes and lay neglected in a garden. Although the party visited other parts of the Greek mainland their plans to visit Ithaca, Cephallonia, and Corfu were abandoned, principally because of the group's poor health' (ODNB).The party returned to England in November 1766, and the first work to be derived from the expedition was Ionian Antiquities, or, Ruins of Magnificent and Famous Buildings in Ionia, which was written by Chandler and illustrated with the architectural drawings of Revett and the topographical views of Pars, and published by the Society of Dilettanti in 1769. Chandler then published the epigraphy of the monuments, with a Latin translation, as Inscriptiones antiquae, pleraeque nondum editae, in Asia Minore et Graecia (Oxford: 1774), followed by his travel journals: Travels in Asia Minor (Oxford: 1775) and the present work. Blackmer states that, 'the account of Athens is very important; it was the most detailed that had yet appeared, and Chandler also made the first public announcement of the discovery of the temple of Apollo Epikourios at Bassae', based on information provided by the French architect Joachim Bocher, who had discovered it. BAL comments that 'Chandler's two travel books proved popular' (p. 2547), and a pirated Dublin edition also appeared in 1776 (without maps), followed by a German edition in 1777 and a French translation in 1803. In his A History of the Oxford University Press (Oxford: 1975), Carter records that 500 copies of the first edition of Travels in Greece were printed (I, p. 602), of which a significant proportion are held institutionally (ESTC records some 73 such copies worldwide).Blackmer 319; ESTC T63359; Lowndes p. 408; Weber II, 554.         The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire.

London: W. Strahan; and T. Cadell, 1776-88 - 6 volumes, quarto (273 × 212 mm). Recently rebound to style in speckled half calf, decorative gilt spines, red morocco labels and numberings roundels, marbled sides. Scattered foxing and marginal dampstaining, marginal worming to first gathering of volume III. An attractive set. Engraved portrait frontispiece of Gibbon by Hall after Reynolds, 3 folding engraved maps. First editions (volume I in the second state) of Gibbon's magisterial history, handsomely bound and with all half-titles and errata leaves present. "This masterpiece of historical penetration and literary style has remained one of the ageless historical works which. maintain their hold upon the layman and continue to stimulate the scholar although they have been superseded in many, if nor most, details by subsequent advances of research and changes in the climate of opinion. Strahan [Gibbon's co-publisher] was the first to appreciate the importance of Gibbon's work: having read the manuscript of the first volume in manuscript, he immediately doubled the printing order - and the first edition of one thousand copies was sold within a fortnight. Gibbon brought a width of vision and a critical mastery of the available sources which have not been equalled to this day; and the result was clothed in an inimitable prose" (Printing and the Mind of Man). [AUTOMATIC ENGLISH TRANSLATION FOLLOWS] the most comprehensive collective edition works of Alexis Piron, given by Rigoley Juvigny. Portrait of the author leads the first book, engraved on copper by Augustin de Saint-Aubin from Caffieri. As so often, the eighth volume, including the playful works, is not attached here. Copy with large margins. Pages in red and black tracks. Binders half blond calf iced mid nineteenth century. spine smooth ornate urn irons and rollers. parts of title and volume number in red shagreen. Light rubbing on some volumes in headdresses, borders. All very fresh. Very nice copy. Piron together theater, stories, and plays in verse and prose. The author began his career by epigrams and witticisms (talent that is found in the Tales), then poured into comedy working for comic opera and theâtre Fair. His tragedies, although they try to renew a genre dying at the time were not his best attempts. Piron gave the piece remains as his masterpiece in 1738: The Metromanie, which Grimm said she would stay as long as there is a theater and taste in France.         America, New England - Tobias Lotter, 1776.

THE MOST IMPORTANT AND INFLUENTIAL MAP OF NEW ENGLAND PUBLISHED DURING THE BRITISH COLONIAL PERIOD"A Map Of The Most Inhabited Part Of New England Containing The Provinces Of Massachusets Bay and New Hampshire. With the Colonies of Conecticut and Rhode Island.' Copper engraving in four joined sheets, published by Tobias Lotter of Augsburg in 1776. With original hand colouring. Size: 97,5 x 101,7 cm.Fine example of the large format map of New England and Long Island by the 18th century cartographer Bradock Mead (aka John Green). Bradock Mead"s map of New England is generally considered the single most important and influential map of New England published during the British Colonial period. Its importance was such that it was revised and reissued well into the 1790s, and over this period it served as a primary source for leading European and American mapmakers.First issued in 1755, the map provided the largest-scale and most detailed and accurate portrait of the region to date. The map was significantly revised in the 1760s, including a complete re-engraving of much of northern New England and New York and addition of the inset map of Boston. These changes are so extensive that the map, viewed in its proper context, needs to be viewed for historical purposes as a new map. The changes included major improvements to the natural geography of the region (changes to the New Hampshire Lakes Region are particularly striking) , the introduction of settlements in central and northern New Hampshire, and the division of Vermont into dozens of "Wentworth Grant' towns. The map depicts New England to 44°30" North as well as Long Island and the Hudson River Valley. Township, county and provincial boundaries are shown, as are roads, forts, and meetinghouses. Rivers and streams are depicted with relative care, while the many mountain ranges are indicated haphazardly with archaic "molehill' symbols. The contrast between southern and northern New England is striking: Connecticut, Rhode Island and Massachusetts east of the Connecticut River are entirely laid out in a grid of counties and townships; whereas much of New Hampshire and almost all of Vermont are denominated "Wildernes [sic] lands of the crown not yet appropriated.' Further, the geography of the north country is but poorly understood, as evidenced by the sketchy detail and distended outlines of New Hampshire"s Lakes Region. Present-day Vermont is shown under the aegis of New Hampshire, though the ambiguity of its status at the time is indicated by the absence of a border with New York.Adding to the informational value and decorative appeal of the map are an early chart of Boston Harbor at bottom center, an inset plan of Fort Frederik at upper left, and a decorative cartouche portarying an idealized version of the Pilgrims" landing at Plymouth.A table of notes at the right lists Mead"s sources for the map, and in doing so makes clear how much care and effort went into its compilation.Price: € 6.850,-.

Napoli, 1776 - Incisione in rame, foglio: mm. 330x460, battuta: mm. 215x395. Acquerellata d'epoca. Ottime condizioni. Tratta da: HAMILTON WILLIAM. Napoli, Pietro Fabris, 1776-1779.Campi phlegraei. Observations on the volcanos of the two Sicilies Supplement to the Campi Phlegraei being an account to the grat eruption of the mount Vesuvius in the month of August 1779 L'opera costituisce un caso unico nella storia del libro illustrato settecentesco, in quanto riunisce un testo di grande interesse scientifico a una serie di 54 tavole di grande valore artistico disegnate dal vero, eseguite all'acquaforte su lastra di rame e dipinte all'acquerello dal grande vedutista Pietro Fabris (attivo tra 1763 e 1779).
