Nella stamperia vescovile Monauniana, Trento, 1776. 68 LXXII p. [1] ritr. [1] c. di tav. ripieg. 4° (23 cm) cart. A c. Bella legatura in cartoncino semirigido dorato coeva. Opera molto rara.         View of a part of the Island of Ischia called Lacco (tav. XXXII).

1776 - 79. Incisione in rame, foglio: mm. 330x460, battuta: mm. 215x395. Acquerellata d'epoca. Ottime condizioni. Tratta da: HAMILTON WILLIAM. Napoli, Pietro Fabris, 1776 - 1779. Campi phlegraei. Observations on the volcanos of the two Sicilies... Supplement to the Campi Phlegraei being an account to the grat eruption of the mount Vesuvius in the month of August 1779...

Three volumes. Paris, Henri Dupuy, 1835.

Pp. (ii), 484; (iv), 496; (ii), 508. With 25 engraved plates and many vignettes in the text. Partly with some staining. Contemporary red paperboards, red morocco spines with four raised bands, lettered and decorated in gilt, lightly rubbed. A collection of fables in the same genre as the Arabian Nights translated into French from an Arabic manuscript by Marcel. Jean Josephe Marcel (1776-1854) was a French orientalist and pupil of Silvestre de Sacy. He was commissioned by Napoleon to manage the national printing press in Egypt during the French expedition in 1798-9. After his return he was placed in charge of the l'Imprimerie Impériale in Paris. During his stay in Egypt Marcel received the manuscript of these tales from his friend Al-Mahdi, the secretary general of the Divan of Cairo, who Marcel beleived to be the author. However this has not been proven and some people beleive that Marcel might be the author himself. The collection comprises two parts: I. "Les dix Soirées malheureuses d'Abd-errahman êl-Iskanderany" (volume one) appeared first in 1829; II. "Séances du Moristan, ou les Révélations de l'Hôpital des Fous du Kaire" (volumes 2 and 3) appeared in 1832-3. Cf Gay 132, 1835.

Villa Panfili fuori di Porta S. Pancrazio

Dimensioni 680 x 490. A scarce and finely engraved scientific double hemisphere world map, constructed with the prime meridian through Paris . The hemispheres are rotated on their axis through 45 degrees in order to define one watery, the other land. This effect creates the 'Hemisphere Terrestre' with the countries of the northern hemisphere, Africa and most of South America, while the 'Hemisphere Maritime' shows the East Indies, Australasia and the Pacific, and the southern tip of South America. Not surprisingly, as a consequence of this experiment from France's school of theoretical cartographers, Paris appears "precisement au centre de tous les continents du monde." This unusual projection, based on the work of the French Academie Royale des Sciences, also emphasises the continuity of the continents. This is a theme in keeping with the earlier work by French scientific map - makers, including Philippe Buache, and repeats typical theoretical concepts such as the 'Mer De L'Ouest' and the other fanciful water systems apparent in north - west America. The map was first published in Paris by Julien in 1753. This particular example is a later Italian edition published in Venice by Santini and Remondini. The map, set within an elaborate framework design, sits above paragraphs of French text explaining the projection. Thus Santini could name the two halves 'Hemisphere Maritime' and 'Hemisphere Terrestre'. Australia and New Zealand are only shown partially (despite Cook a decade before); the erroneous 'Mer de L'Ouest' appears in northwest America , with a large 'I. Nouvelle' just south of the Bering Straits; and Jesso is part of mainland Asia. Dimensioni 680 x 490 Venezia Venice

Document signed on parchment, in English. "Exemplification of a common recovery with double vouchers of the messuage & plantation in Blockley late the estate of Morton Garrett.".

Philadelphia Folio (51.5 cm, 20.5"). [1] p.. 1776 Document relating to strife between John Ord and Gunning Bedford (probably not the Constitution signer but rather his cousin; both Bedfords were born in Philadelphia, a few years apart) over a Philadelphia-area property and its rents. Written in March of the "sixteenth year of the reign of" George III and the year of the Revolution, this was filed before Samuel Ashmead, justice of the Court of Common Pleas; the document is indited in a fine, light hand, and signed by Samuel Mifflin, a merchant and landowner who in 1761 had refused election as mayor of the city. All the names involved here have powerful Philadelphia associations. A seal is affixed to the sheet, intended to be removed and used "for sealing of Writs in our Court." Blockley, in which the land in question was located, was a township located in West Philadelphia from about 1677 until its consolidation with the city in 1854. The name has lingered, although it has been superceded in general usage by the broader term "University City. Parchment crisp and untorn, with outermost folded portions lightly spotted; front with early inked title as given above, plus pencilled numerals. An evocative document connected to some very prominent names, in excellent condition, with its seal protected for its intended reuse by a diamond-shaped paper covering.

Jahrhunderts.

The Declaration of Independence Gentleman?s Magazine August 1776

London: Printed for D. Henry. Very Good. (September) 1776. Hardcover. 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 8 3/8? x 5 1/8?. Disbound. Pp. [337-339] 340-387 [388]. Very good plus: leaves clean and bright with just a hint of foxing, tiny spot of repaired loss to upper corner of first leaf. Housed in a custom full calf folder with morocco label, gilt. Folder a bit bowed. The most important issue of this British magazine, containing an early British printing of The Declaration of Independence which is also one of the earliest magazine printings. News of the Declaration reached London by sea the second week of August, and the story broke with a short note of the August 10th issue of The London Gazette. The full text first appeared in England in two different newspapers on August 16th. This issue of Gentleman?s Magazine was likely printed the first or second day of September, as there is mention of an event that occurred August 31st. The Declaration is printed on pages 361 and 362 and is broadcast to its readers with little fanfare; no introduction or commentary, just ?Declaration of American Independency? signed in type by both John Hancock and Charles Thompson. The Revolution is discussed elsewhere in the magazine with a member of Parliament commenting, ?the Colonies, as if animated with one soul, are determined to perish or be free. ? Several pages are devoted to an article entitled Proceedings of the American Colonists which makes brief mention of the Declaration??the ball is now struck, and time only can shew where it will rest. ? A lovely copy of a special magazine, containing an early printing of one of the most important documents in the history of man.         An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations

London: for W. Strahan and T. Cadell,, 1776. In two Volumes. 2 volumes, quarto (283 × 225mm). Early 20th century calf spines and marbled boards, spines ruled and stamped gilt in compartments, red leather labels. Head of spine to volume 2 chipped, inner hinges split but joints very firm, corners slightly bumped. Without the half-title to volume two and final blank in volume one. Marginal pale semi-circular oil stain (presumably from a lamp) to the first 40 pages in volume two, dimishing from 6cm to 1 cm. A few leaves in volume two bound in unevenly with slightly shorter fore-margins. Leaf P2 verso (page 107) in volume two lightly inked, affecting fourteen lines. Occasional light spotting as usual and the odd stain. A very good set. First edition of "the first and greatest classic of modern economic thought" (PMM). In his Wealth of Nations, Smith "begins with the thought that labour is the source from which a nation derives what is necessary to it. The improvement of the division of labour is the measure of productivity and in it lies the human propensity to barter and exchange ? The Wealth of Nations ends with a history of economic development, a definitive onslaught on the mercantile system, and some prophetic speculations on the limits of economic control" (PMM). "The Wealth of Nations had no rival in scope or depth when published and is still one of the few works in its field to have achieved classic status, meaning simply that it has sustained yet survived repeated reading, critical and adulatory, long after the circumstances which prompted it have become the object of historical enquiry" (ODNB).

Augsburg 1776 - Copper engraved map, period hand-colouring. Lotter's attractive map of the British Colonies at the start of the Revoloutionary War, here with beautiful contemporary hand colouring Each of the thirteen Colonies is identified by name both on the map, and in the title. The title is placed within an attractive decorative border surmounted by the British Royal arms. The French title and nomenclature indicates that Lotter, a leading German mapmaker, intended this for the French market, as does the fact that he limits the claims of the British to the regions east of the Appalachian Mountains. The delineation of the thirteen "Provinces unies" is generally well done (although Maryland and Georgia are both strangely shaped): a number of locations are named in the Ohio Valley, including Logs Town, Twictwees, Ft. Du Quesne, Allegheny, Vinango, Buffaloons, Sandoski and Mingos. Some interesting details are also shown in the region of the Great Lakes. McCorkle, New England in Early Printed Maps 776.19; cf.
