The 1776 condemning and sale of the Schooner Woodbridge; George Washington requests a calls for action

Boston, Massachusetts, January 26, 1776. 6" x 7.75". "A memo of a Bill of Sale, ADS, on laid paper, 6"" x 7.75"". Dated ""Boston, Jan 26, 1776"". Edges lightly chipped, expertly restored by a paper conservator with a few imperceptible touch ups to ink. Light creasing and expected folds. Signed by Job Prince ""Job Prince"", a wealthy shipmaster of Boston.A important bill of sale which was noted in a documented letter from George Washington to Peter Van Brugh Livingston of the Massachusetts Court in August 30, 1775. The Schooner Woodbridge had been carrying a cargo of flour, bread, bran, and corn from Philadelphia to Newburyport when it was captured off Cape Ann on July 31st by the British sloop of war Merlin. The Woodbridge was subsequently condemned and sold at Boston (this document representing the bill of sale). At the time of the capture of the schooner, George Washington's letter addressed his concerns to the court about the capture of this schooner, in addition to others, repeatedly occuring by the British and was requesting a call for action. George Washington's letter in full is shown below: GEORGE WASHINGTON TO THE MASSACHUSETTS GENERAL COURTSir: Camp at Cambridge, July 31, 1775. I have considered the Application made me yesterday from the General Court, with all the attention due to the Situation of the People, in whose behalf it is made, and the Respect due to such a Recommendation. Upon referring to my Instructions and Consulting with those Members of Congress who are Present, as well as the General Officers, they all agree that it would not be consistent with my Duty to detach any Part of the Army now here on any Particular Provincial Service. It has been debated in Congress and Settled, that the Militia, or other Internal Strength of each Province, is to be applied for Defence against those Small and Particular Depredations which were to be expected, and to which they were Supposed to be competent. This will appear the more Proper, when it is considered that every Town and, indeed, every Part of our Sea Coast, which is exposed to these Depredations, would have an equal claim upon this Army; It is the Misfortune of our Situation which exposes us to these Ravages, against which, in my Judgement, no such Temporary Relief would possibly secure us. The great advantage the Enemy has, of Transporting Troops, by being Master of the Sea, will enable them to harrass us by Diversions of this kinds; and should we be tempted to pursue them upon every Alarm; The Army must either be so weaken'd as to expose it to Destruction, or a great part of the Coast be still left unprotected. Nor, indeed, does it appear to me, that such a pursuit would be attended with the least Effect; The first Notice of such an Incursion would be its actual Execution; and long before any Troops could reach the Scene of Action, the Enemy would have an Opportunity to accomplish their purpose and retire. It would give me great pleasure to have it in my power, to extend Protection and Safety to every Individual; but the wisdom of the General Court will anticipate me in the necessity of conducting our Operations on a General and impartial Scale, so as to exclude any first cause of Complaint and Jealousy. I beg, Sir, you will do me the Honor to Communicate these Sentiments to the General Court, and to apologize for my involuntary Delay. As we were alrm'd this Morning by the Enemy, and my Time taken up with giving the necessary Directions. I shall be happy in every Opportunity of shewing my very great Respect and Regard for the General Court of Massachusetts Bay, and am, Sir,1. Fitzpatrick, ed., Writings of Washington, 111, 379-381. In total 86 descriptive text pages, 73 beautifully engraved hand-coloured plates containing 409 figures of marble. Contemporary full mottled calf; spine with five raised bands, richly gilt ornamented compartments and one red morocco label with gilt title. All edges red.= Second edition of this magnificent and outstanding colour plate book, depicting an almost infinitely-varied series of marbles and allied ornamental stones from deposits in Germany and nearby countries, including Belgium, Switzerland, and Italy. Apparently each of the rectangular panels represents the appearance of a polished slab, with most plates depicting six such pieces, but others two, four, and as many as nine. While one is immediately captivated by the richness and depth of the watercolour painting, often heightened by the application of opaque white for veinlets, it can be seen that under each painting lies a complex, lightly-incised network of lines, almost like rouletting, over which the colours have been laid. Only a few copies of this second edition are known to possess a maximum of 98 plates, of which this copy has the vast majority. Only one copy with 98 plates has ever been auctioned, and one truly exceptional copy with 100 plates has recently been made known. Auction records from for the past 50 years are very scarce and demonstrate a large variety in the number of plates (i.e. 23, 30, 42, 68 and only one with 73, like ours). We believe this proves that the work was issued in parts by subscription, and accounts for all copies containing less than the maximum number of plates. The maximum number is listed in the British Museum Catalogue and in Brunet only. The few other copies recorded all lack 20 or more plates, usually towards the end of the book. This copy is remarkable for having a part of the Italian section, with six plates. The text appears in four modern languages in rectangular columns and the Latin text at the bottom. The Latin and German descriptive text is by Casimir Christoph Schmidel (1718-1792). Each section has its own title and preface; the accompanying text ends with plate 73. The next section "Florentinische Marmer" is only denoted by the caption of plate 74. Brunet IV may be in error listing text up to plate 75. Most plates, except a few, are tissue guarded. All pages clean and plates with colouring very fresh and vivid. A fine copy. Brunet IV, col. 1243; V, col. 1465 (with 98 plates). Cat BM(NH), pp. 1243, 2340 (with 98 plates); Landwehr, 1; Sinkankas, 7281 (with 54 plates). [Attributes: Hard Cover]

The Death of General Wolfe London: Boydell John and Ryland William, 1776.

LONDON: BOYDELL JOHN AND RYLAND WILLIAM, 1776. Incisione all'acquaforte di mm 590 x 425 incollata su cartoncino, a brevissimi margini. Ottima impressione.

The original German edition was published in Copenhagen in 1744-1778 under the title "Reisebeschreibung nach Arabien und anderen umliegenden Ländern". - ''In volume II, p. 317 he [Niebuhr] begins his description of the journey from Beit el Fakih in the coffee mountains. This is accompanied by three engravings'' (Hünersdorff). There are some 40 other references to coffee in this work, including the journey from Sana'a to Mocha. The plates, the same as used for the first German language edition, include many views of cities, antiquities and statues, natives in traditional dress, hieroglyphs, Arabic script, musical instruments, a reception with the Iman of Sana'a (Yemen), and views of the mosque in Meshed Ali. The 31 maps and plans are of Constantinople, the Nile, Jeddah in the province of Mecca, Bombay, the palace of Persepolis, Muscat, the Arabian ("Persian") Gulf, Baghdad, Mosul, etc. Niebuhr's map of Yemen, the first exact map of the area ever, remained the standard for the next 200 years. - "The expedition had been proposed by the Hebrew scholar Johann David Michäelis of Göttingen for the purpose of illustrating certain passages of the Old Testament, and initially envisaged only a single traveller, possible an Arabic scholar. However, the idea rapidly blossomed into a fully-fledged scientific expedition. The team eventually assembled, for which there was no appointed leader, included Niebuhr as surveyor, along with Friedrich Christian von Haven, Peter Forskall, Christian Carl Kramer, Georg Baurenfeind, and a Swedish ex-soldier named Berggren" (Howgego). Carsten Niebuhr (1733-1815) was the sole survivor, and his work represents an important contribution to the study of the Middle East. - Bindings used. Large-margined copy of this famous account of the Middle East, Egypt, Persia, and India in fine condition. Howgego I, N24. Hünersdorff, Coffee, p. 1081. Van Hulthem 15024. Nyon 21018.

A night view of a current of lava that ran from Mount Vesuvius towards Resina (tav. XXXVIII).

Napoli, 1776 - Incisione in rame, foglio: mm. 330x460, battuta: mm. 215x395. Acquerellata d'epoca. Napoli, Pietro Fabris, 1776-1779.Campi phlegraei. Observations on the volcanos of the two Sicilies Supplement to the Campi Phlegraei being an account to the grat eruption of the mount Vesuvius in the month of August 1779 L'opera costituisce un caso unico nella storia del libro illustrato settecentesco, in quanto riunisce un testo di grande interesse scientifico a una serie di 54 tavole di grande valore artistico disegnate dal vero, eseguite all'acquaforte su lastra di rame e dipinte all'acquerello dal grande vedutista Pietro Fabris (attivo tra 1763 e 1779). The Wealth of Nations

Volume II only (of two). The binding, or what remains of it, would appear to be early nineteenth century, the front board is detached, but present, much of the spine is lacking, though the middle section with the labels remains, the rear board is present and attached. It is bound without the half-title, three sections of text have been neatly replaced in manuscript facsimile, presumably at the same time as the book was re-bound to judge by the uniform marbling to all edges of the text block. It is slightly foxed and age toned, not to mention being a little musty. The sections replaced are pages: 203-206, 267-270 and 507-510. There is a charming note, presumably from the original owner, tucked into the book, which reads: "Torn out I know not when I never lent the book except to Mr Webster". This plaintive protest echoes down the ages, striking a chord with any bibliophile who has ever lent a treasured volume and lived to rue it, a curse on "Mr Webster" and all his kind! One of the most important works ever committed to print, this single volume from the first edition is somewhat of a historical relic or a spare part, depending upon your point of view. It would be lovely to think that the missing volume I may at some point come to light, perhaps from one of Mr Webster's descendants, atoning for the sins of his ancestor, but it is quite a forlorn hope.

Paris: (Jean-Baptiste) Gogue & (Jean-François) Nee de La Rochelle, 1776 (22 January et seq.). First Edition. Very good antiquarian condition. 8vo. iv, 8 [Ordre des livres], xxxii [Avertissement + Table systematique], 382 pp., 4542 lots [livres] + 51 lots [estampes], of which 3059 lots are PRICED in a contemporary hand. French calf (ca. 1830), worn, triple gilt fillet around sides, rebacked with original smooth spine laid down, two red leather labels ("Catalogue Perrot" and "1776"), blue sprinkled edges, blue marbled pastedowns and endleaves. Old stamp of the Archief der Provincie Antwerpen on title-page and final page ("Afgevoerd" i.e. withdrawn). The Perrot sale catalogue was a milestone in the classification of knowledge, "remarkable because it adopted a new system of bibliography which, with good reason, had no imitators" (G. Brunet, who wrongly attributed the catalogue to Gogue). R. Blum, "Bibliographia," 1980, correctly attributes the cataloguing and classification to Nee. "His catalogue of the Perrot Library attracted attention because of its organization of the five classes, with some sections differing from the "Systeme des Libraires de Paris": Theology, Sciences, Art, History, Jurisprudence. [However] the modified system was not successful. In it Nee had placed bibliography together with polygraphy under the heading "Prolegomenes" at the beginning of the second class of sciences immediately behind theology, since it indicated the sources for the fields of learning." Perrot's was a vast library by any description, containing not less than 20,000 volumes. See Taylor, Book Catalogues. Pollard & Ehrman 294; North 243; Brunet, Dict. Bibliologie Catholique, col. 509.         Travels in Greece: or an Account of a Tour made at the Expense of the Society of Dilettanti.

4to (261 x 219mm), pp. 4 (title, verso blank, plates and references to plan), xiv (contents), [2 (errata and advertisement)], 304; 7 engraved maps and plans by J. Barber and T. Kitchin, 2 folding; occasional light spotting or marking, light offsetting from engravings onto text, one folding map with skilfully repaired tears; contemporary speckled half roan over marbled boards, spine gilt in compartments, gilt morocco lettering-piece in one, red-sprinkled edges; slightly rubbed and scuffed, traces of bookplate on upper pastedown, nonetheless very good, clean copy. First edition. The classical scholar, traveller, and author Chandler (bap. 1737, d. 1810) was educated at Winchester College and Queen's College, Oxford, and awarded a demyship at Magdalen College in 1757. Following the publication of an annotated collection of fragments by Tyrtaeus, Simonides, Theognis, Alcaeus, Sappho, and other Greek poets in 1759, Chandler published a catalogue of the Arundel marbles in 1763 as Marmora Oxoniensis. 'In 1764 Chandler was introduced to the Society of Dilettanti by Robert Wood, editor of The Ruins of Palmyra, and was commissioned by the society to undertake a tour of exploration in Asia Minor and Greece in the first independent mission funded by the society. As treasurer he was given command of the expedition, and was accompanied by Nicholas Revett [...] and by the watercolour painter William Edmund Pars. They were instructed to make Smyrna their headquarters and thence "to make excursions to the several remains of antiquity in that neighbourhood"; to make exact plans and measurements; to make "accurate drawings of the bas-reliefs and ornaments"; and to copy all inscriptions, all the while keeping "minute diaries". Having embarked from Gravesend on 9 June 1764 the party spent about a year in Asia Minor [...]. On 20 August 1765 they left Smyrna for Athens, where Chandler gloomily noted that the Parthenon was in danger of being completely destroyed. He bought two fragments of the Parthenon frieze that had been built into houses in the town and was presented with a trunk that had fallen from one of the metopes and lay neglected in a garden. Although the party visited other parts of the Greek mainland their plans to visit Ithaca, Cephallonia, and Corfu were abandoned, principally because of the group's poor health' (ODNB). The party returned to England in November 1766, and the first work to be derived from the expedition was Ionian Antiquities, or, Ruins of Magnificent and Famous Buildings in Ionia, which was written by Chandler and illustrated with the architectural drawings of Revett and the topographical views of Pars, and published by the Society of Dilettanti in 1769. Chandler then published the epigraphy of the monuments, with a Latin translation, as Inscriptiones antiquae, pleraeque nondum editae, in Asia Minore et Graecia (Oxford: 1774), followed by his travel journals: Travels in Asia Minor (Oxford: 1775) and the present work. Blackmer states that, 'the account of Athens is very important; it was the most detailed that had yet appeared, and Chandler also made the first public announcement of the discovery of the temple of Apollo Epikourios at Bassae', based on information provided by the French architect Joachim Bocher, who had discovered it. BAL comments that 'Chandler's two travel books proved popular' (p. 2547), and a pirated Dublin edition also appeared in 1776 (without maps), followed by a German edition in 1777 and a French translation in 1803. In his A History of the Oxford University Press (Oxford: 1975), Carter records that 500 copies of the first edition of Travels in Greece were printed (I, p. 602), of which a significant proportion are held institutionally (ESTC records some 73 such copies worldwide).

Paris, Nyon, 1776[-1791].

1776. 4to. 15 vols. Half-titles in vols. I-II and IX-XIV; two engraved portrait frontispieces: Qianlong Emperor (vol. 1) and M. Amiot (vol. 15), 151 (of 158) engraved plates (some folding), maps and tables (lacking 7 plates in vol. 2). Contemp. French mottled calf. Spines gilt. First edition of the first fifteen volumes of this monumental survey of Chinese life in the 18th century as witnessed by the Jesuit missionaries. This work by missionaries including Cibot, Bourgeois, Poirot, Ko and Yang comprises translations of classic Chinese works of law, maxims and proverbs, as well as essays on Chinese linguistics, current affairs and scientific observation. Volume VII is a reprint of Amiot's "Art militaire des Chinois" (Paris 1772), the first translation into a European language of the ancient Chinese military strategy, while volume XII, the "Vie de Confucius", was more complete and accurate than any previous text on the subject. - Amiot, the main contributor, went to China in 1740 and soon won the confidence of the Qianlong Emperor, remaining for the rest of his life in Beijing after the suppression of the Jesuits in 1773. Fluent in both Chinese and Tartar, his works were amongst the first to bring the philosophy and life of the East to the western world, and his "Dictionnaire tatare-mantchou-français" (Paris 1789) was the first to introduce these languages to Europe. Many of the engravings are based on Chinese designs sent by Amiot to Henri Bertin, minister in charge of Chinese affairs under Louis XVI. - Volumes 16 and 17 were published much later in 1814 and under a different imprint, and complete sets are infrequently found on the market. - Some wear to spine ends and at edges. Provenance: from the library of Jean R. Perrette with his bookplate on the pastedown. Barbier III, 182. Brunet III, 1596. Cordier (Sinica) I, 54f. Lust 96 (vols. 1-16 only).         Autograph letter signed ("Gluck"). Vienna, 29. XI. 1776.

1776. 4to. 1 p. on bifolium. To his friend Franz Kruthoffer (1740-1815?), secretary at the Imperial Embassy in Paris and Gluck's de facto private secretary: a fine document of Gluck's shrewd business sense as well as of the high demand among librettists for music by the foremost composer of his age. For Kruthoffer's sake, Gluck promises to accomodate his publisher Peters with regard to royalties, but he makes it clear that in turn he will be asking extra voucher copies and will not let this one-off concession establish a precedent for future negotiations. - Folded horizontally, without an address: as mentioned in the text, the thrifty Gluck sent this letter - as most of his communications with Kruthoffer - by way of the diplomatic courier service just leaving Vienna for Paris. Kruthoffer has noted his response in the upper margin: "Beant. Paris am 18ten Dezember 1776". Extremely rare, especially when signed (as Gluck, using the diplomatic mail, usually omitted his signature from his letters to Kruthoffer). Kinsky's 1927 edition of Gluck's correspondence with Kruthoffer noted the loss of a letter of this date; it was not published until 1932. - Provenance: in the "autograph collection of Mrs E[milie] Sch[aup] in Vienna" (cf. Komorn, p. 674) in 1932; in an unidentified "private collection" (cf. Badura-Skoda) in 1963. Includes old collection folder. Not in Kinsky (but cf. note p. 26). Not in Müller v. Asow (ed.), The Collected Correspondence and Papers of Christoph Willibald Gluck (1962). First published: Maria Komorn, Ein ungedruckter Brief Glucks, in: Zeitschrift für Musik 99 (1932), p. 672-675, at p. 674. Facsimile: Eva Badura-Skoda, "Eine private Briefsammlung", in: Festschrift Otto Erich Deutsch (Kassel 1963), p. 280-290, at fig. 5 and p. 282f.

(Bound with) II: Niebuhr, Carsten. Amsterdam, Steven Jacobus Baalde; Utrecht, Johannes van Schoonhoven & Co. (colophon: printed by Johan Joseph Besseling), 1774. With engraved title-page with an engraved vignette by N. van der Meer (2 female figures with a globe and other instruments) and 25 engraved plates numbered I-XXIV, (XXV), including 7 folding showing 1 view of military exercises, 2 Kufic inscriptions (coloured by hand) and 4 maps. The unnumbered map of Yemen (plate size 58.5 x 39 cm) is coloured by hand in outline. The full-page plates include maps, topographic views, costumes, coins, Arabic inscriptions, etc. All by C. J. de Huyser, N. van der Meer, Th. Koning and C. Philips. 2 works in 3 volumes. 4to. Contemporary half tree calf, sides covered with paste paper; rebacked, with original gold-tooled backstrip laid down. One of the very rare large paper copies of the first and only editions of the Dutch translation by Jacob van Ekers of Niebuhr's famous account of a voyage to Arabia and surrounding countries (ad 1) and his description of Arabia, Egypt and the Middle East (ad 2). Both works were originally written by the Danish traveller and surveyor Carsten Niebuhr (1733-1815) and published in German, in Copenhagen in 1772 under the titles, "Beschreibung von Arabien" and "Reisebeschreibung nach Arabien und anderen umliegenden Ländern". Both works were also translated in French and English. - In 1760 Niebuhr was invited to join a scientific expedition to Egypt. Other members of the expedition were Friedrich Christian von Haven (a Danish linguist and orientalist), Christian Carl Kramer (a Danish physician and zoologist), Georg Baurenfeind (an artist from southern Germany), Berggren (a Swedish ex-soldier) and Pehr Forrskal (a Swedish botanist). In January 1761, the expedition sailed from Copenhagen, Denmark to Alexandria, Egypt. The members of the expedition spent a year in Egypt, visiting Suez and Mount Sinai. They left Suez in October 1762 and sailed to Yemen. In May 1763 they reached Mocha where Von Haven and Forrskal died from malaria. In August 1763 Baurenfeind and Berggren died, followed by Kramer in February 1764. Niebuhr was the only one left to continue the expedition. In 1764, he explored India, sailing from Bombay to Muscat, as well as Shiraz, Babylon, Baghdad, Mosul, and Aleppo. He spent some time in Persepolis in 1765 where he has made very detailed drawings and maps, which were used for more than a hundred years. In 1766, he explored Palestine before finally returning to Copenhagen on 20 November 1767, after a journey of seven years. When he returned to Copenhagen the Swedish government warmly welcomed him and paid the costs of engraving the plates to illustrate his accounts of the voyage. Both works are lavishly illustrated, having together 2 large maps of Yemen and 148 beautifully engraved maps, plans and views of all the regions Niebuhr visited. - The present set has both works printed on the same large paper watermarked: Strasburg bend above VDL and is only slightly trimmed, measuring: 296 x 242 mm. with the tranchefiles still visible. While regular copies are printed on unwatermarked paper measuring 275 x 217 mm. Not even Tiele mentions the existence of copies on large paper. - Binding slightly rubbed on the sides and rebacked as noted; otherwise good. With a few occasional spots, the half-titles slightly thumbed and a few mm. of minor browning in the upper margins; a very good large paper copy, only slightly trimmed. Howgego, to 1800, N24. Tiele, Bibl. 795f. Cf. Atabey 873f. Cox I, 237f. Gay 3589. Hamilton, Europe and the Arab world 48.

Including: Schutte, Rutger. Utrecht, Rotterdam and Amsterdam, Gijsbert Tieme and Abraham van Paddenburg; Jacobus Bosch and Reinier Arrenberg; Martinus de Bruyn, 1776-1786.

1776. 3 vols. (in 6 parts) bound as 6. 4to. XXXVI, 219, (1), (11), 224-491, (1) pp. (12), 262 pp., (1 blank f.), VIII, (3), 268-376, 397-519, (1) pp. VIII, 262 pp., (1 blank f.), VIII, (3), 268-403, (1) pp. (4), 115, (1), 124 pp. With 205 engraved folding plates (irregularly numbered I-CIII), including maps, plans, views and other illustrations, depicting temples, antiquities, plants, animals, etc. Contemporary half calf, gold fillets and two title-labels on spines, sprinkled paper sides. First edition of the Dutch translation of Pococke's celebrated monograph on the Near and Middle East, praised by Gibbon as a work of "superior learning and dignity" (Decline and Fall, ch. 11, n. 69). This Dutch edition was augmented with 27 plates, an essay by the minister Rutger Schutte on the travels of the Israelites, and a index to Biblical locations found in the main work. - "Pococke travelled extensively in Europe from 1733 to 1736 and continued on to the Levant, reaching Alexandria in September 1737. He remained three years in the Eastern Mediterranean, visiting Egypt, Palestine, Asia Minor and Greece. His book describes these journeys but not necessarily in chronological order. The plates of antiquities are after drawings by Pococke himself ... Pococke achieved a great reputation with this publication; the work was very popular during his lifetime and was praised by Gibbon" (Blackmer). "The quality and particularly the earliness of his observations and their record in prose, maps, and diagrams make him one of the most important near eastern travellers, ranking with Frederik Ludvig Norden and Carsten Niebuhr, in stimulating an Egyptian revival in European art and architecture, and recording much that has subsequently been lost" (ODNB). - A couple plates in the last volume slightly browned and a few spots on the first few leaves of the first volume, otherwise a very good copy, with the leaves nearly untrimmed. The bindings somewhat rubbed along the extremities (primarily the spines), but otherwise good. Cox I, 224. Tiele, Bibl. 869. Cf. Blackmer 1323 (English ed.); for the author: Baigent, "Pococke, Richard (1704-1765"; in: ODNB (online ed.).

        Kitab al-Injil as-sharif at-tahir wa-al-misbah al-munir al-zahir. Al-Shuwayr, Kisrawan, Lebanon, Kloster des Heiligen Johannes des Täufers, [1776].

1776. Folio (213 x 322 mm). (4), 316 pp. Parts printed in red and black. With numerous ornamental lines and several woodcut tailpieces. Modern half calf. "The Evangelion of the Greek Church, containing the Gospels arranged for liturgical reading throughout the year" (Darlow/M.). From the printing office of the monastery of St. John the Baptist at Shuwair in the Lebanon, which was operative between 1734 and 1899 (cf. Silvestre de Sacy I, pp. 412-414; Middle Eastern Languages and the Print Revolution. A Cross-Cultural Encounter, Westhofen 2002, pp. 179-181). Particularly remarkable in this present publication is the typographic decor: all pages are framed by double rules; new sections of text are headed with an ornamental line of floral elements across the entire page width, and numerous pages show smaller figural endpieces (roses, baskets, crosses, as well as the Virgin with the Child Jesus) - a charming juxtaposition of simple woodcuts showing floral and geometrical decor familiar from the Hebrew prints produced in 19th-century Palestine with the more elaborate products "à la italienne". - Some occasional worming, browning and brownstaining. Schnurrer 360. Darlow/Moule 1661.
