        Eruption Vesuvius 1767.

Venezia: Francesco Santini, a Santa Giustina, 1776

Bella vergata veneziana. Filigrana trelune. Foglio a larghi margini. Una gora leggera nella parte centrale. Titolo entro ricco cartiglio in alto a destra. Robert (Jean) Janvier: working in Paris in the second half of the eighteenth century, Jean Janvier (1746 ? 1776) produced a series of maps in the later half of the century. While there is some confusion about his Christian name, his maps usually were inscribed ?Le Sieur Janvier?. He is best known for his collaboration with engraver Jean Lattre for an Atlas Moderne first released in 1762 and in several later editions some by C. F. Delamarche and by Chez Remondini. He also produced several maps used in general atlases by William Fadan and P. Santini.

Requete au Conseil de Roi, Pour M. Linguet, Avocat. Contre

1776. Linguet, [Simon Nicolas Henri] [1736-1794]. Requete au Conseil de Roi, Pour M. Linguet, Avocat. Contre les Arrets du Parlement de Paris, Des 29 Mars & 4 Fevrier 1775. Amsterdam: Chez Marc-Michel Rey, 1776. 12mo. [ii], 260 pp. 12mo (6-1/2" x 4"). Contemporary mottled sheep, gilt spine, marbled endpapers. Light rubbing to boards, moderate rubbing to extremities. Some toning to text, internally clean. A nice copy. * First edition. (Also issued the same year in Geneva.) This book concerns the sanctioning of Linguet's disbarment by the Order of Barristers by the Parlement. The complicated circumstances had to do with competition within the Order of Barristers and tensions between the Order and the Parlement. Linguet, admitted to the bar in 1764, was a formidable advocate. The immediate cause of his disbarment was "a tirade in which the author seems to have lost his temper and denounced the Order. This convoluted affair is described in Michael P. Fitzsimmons, The Parisian Order of Barristers and the French Revolution, 24ff. OCLC locates 4 copies in North America, 1 in a law library (UC-Berkeley). Another copy located at George Washington University Law School. Not in the British Museum Catalogue.

Anthologia Meriana CXV. continens plantarum, florum maxime, egregie sculptas tabulas, addito indice, in quo tum antiquiora illarum, tum etiam Linnaeana occurrunt nomina. Editio nova.

Francofurti et Lipsaie, apud Joann. Georg. Fleischer, 1776. Folio (353 x 227mm). pp. 6, with 115 (4 folded) engraved plates. Contemporary vellum, spine with gilt lettering. A well preserved and spotless copy of one of the most beautiful German florilegia illustrating numerous exotic and unusual plants. It is the last edition of de Bry's famous florilegium. The first edition appeared 1612-14 with 87 plates. The florilegium was very popular and considerably expanded in later editions. Johann Theodor de Bry belonged to a noted family of engravers from Frankfurt. "In 1641, twenty-one years after the death of Johann Theodor de Bry, Matthaeus Merian the elder published an amplified version of the 'opus magnus' of his father-in-law 'Florelegium novum', entitling it 'Florilegium renovatum'. Merian was born in Basel in 1593... he settled in Frankfurt, where he married de Bry's daughter. A versatile artist, Merian not only continued the work of his father-in-law as an engraver, he also painted landscapes, portraits and historical scenes. His children, Matthaeus the younger and Maria Sibylla, followed in his footsteps: both became artists." (Tomasi, An Oak Spring Flora p. 74). This last edition has 115 plates portraying the most beautiful plants of the 'Florilegium Renovatum et Auctum' published in 1641 (-1647). Nissen BBI, 276.

Strängnäs, L. A. Collin, 1776. 4:o. 63 s.

Binden enkelt markerade i guld.

While Marra's Journal provided Europe with descriptions of the indigenous peoples of a number of Pacific societies, the voyage also proved that no southern continent existed in the temperate zone, and had the Resolution making the first crossing by ship over the Antarctic circle. Ref. Beddie-1270,1271; Sabin-16247; Cox, vol. 1, p. 59.

Bassompierre, 1776. Contemporary calf, rebacked in complementary style, spine with gilt-stamped leather title and author labels and gilt-stamped compartment decorations; original leather acid-pitted and cracked over edges and extremities. First edition: Treatise on ancient dress among the Egyptians, Greeks, Persians, Jews, Romans, and other people. The author, a Flemish artist also known as Andries Cornelis Lens, came to the study of antiquarian clothing by way of his classically inspired focus in painting. Illustrated with 51 copper-engraved plates done by Pitre Martenasie, this is an "Ouvrage estimé" according to Brunet (who seemingly mistakenly cites 57 engravings as opposed to the 51 given by von Lipperheide, described in institutional holdings, and present here).

A General Map of the Middle British Colonies

London, 1776. No Binding. Very Good. 19 x 26 inches. Original outline color; reinforced fold separation & wear, slight losses due to abrasion, mended split into surface; nice, dark printing impression; overall very good, especially for a map originally issued folded. A scarce, handsomely engraved edition of the great Evans map intended for use by British officers serving in the American Revolution. This edition appeared as both a separate and in a work called the American Military Pocket Atlas, styled the "Holster Atlas," as it was intended to provide a geographic overview for British officers being shipped off to battle the rebellious colonists. This was a new state, second issue, of the often-used Kitchin-Jefferys-Sayer plate but with significant changes (".so strangely altered as to be almost unrecognizable,"). An important improvement in this state was the expansion of the inset at upper left to contain all of the Great Lakes not already shown on the map proper. The shapes of Lake Ontario and Erie have also been updated, and the map was expanded to include some of Canada north of the lakes. Many of the other changes, especially in the Ohio area, reintroduced Evans' original delineations that were distorted in the earlier states of the present plate. Forts are shown in abundance in New York, especially in the Lake Champlain region, and in Pennsylvania. Roads and trails are also shown throughout.Stevens Map XV, see also XIV.
