Amsterdam, 1774 - First edition of the chevalier's massive treatise on public administration largely composed in 1769 at the seat of his friend the fifth Earl Ferrers at Staunton Harald. As Louis XV's controversial and secret foreign correspondent in England, D'Eon was a consistently colourful figure; his celebrity as a high-living transvestite sometimes obscuring his military, political and literary achievements. Throughout the 1770s doubts were expressed about D'Éon's sex, and wagers were made, although he himself professed to be indignant at the suggestion that he was not a man. Les Loisirs includes large dissertations on ecclesiastical history, Russian commerce (a subject on which he was expert), British affairs (including lengthy considerations of Scotland and America) and (of course) French politics. 13 vols, 8vo (205 × 107 mm). Complete with half-titles. Contemporary half calf. Rubbed and slightly dry, with occasional chipping to spine ends, some joints cracked but secure. Later armorial bookplates of the Earls of Bradford (Weston Library). [Attributes: First Edition]

        [HISTORIES]

Birminghamiae: Typis Johannis Baskerville, 1774. n. This is the ducodecimo version of the Baskerville Classics edition of these Roman histories, offered here in an especially attractive binding. The only extant historical works of Sallust (86-34 B.C.), both included here, are his history of the conspiracy of Catiline against the senate in the year Cicero was consul, and his history of the Roman war against the Numidian (Algerian) chieftain Jugurtha, brought to its conclusion by the great soldier and populist politician Marius. As a stylist Sallust has enjoyed great fame for his artistic and epigrammatic speeches with their vividly delineated characters. Florus, who lived at the beginning of the second century A.D., wrote a summary history of Rome from earliest times to the reign of Augustus. It still merits consultation, since it rests on a tradition independent of Livy, and was a popular school text in the Middle Ages.. 180 x 114 mm. (7 1/8 x 4 1/2"). 1 p.l., 275 [i.e., 274] pp. Handsome contemporary hunter green morocco, covers with border of decorative gilt rolls, flat spines gilt in compartments with medallion centerpiece inside a dotted-rule lozenge, volute cornerpieces, gilt titling, turn-ins with decorative gilt roll, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt (small spot of green paint to front joint). Gaskell 55. Head of front joint a little rubbed, spine slightly darkened, title page lightly browned, other trivial imperfections, otherwise an excellent copy in a lustrous binding, with clean, fresh text that shows no signs of having been read.         Considerations on the measures carrying on with respect to the British colonies in North-America.

London printed; Hartford reprinted: Eben. Watson 8vo (21.6 cm, 8.5"). 63, [1] pp.. 1774 One of five American editions appearing in 1774, following the London first of the same year, of this important polemic. The second Baron Rokeby was a politician and champion of civil liberties who published several pamphlets opposing Lord North's American policy; Appletons' Cyclopaedia of American Biography notes that "the measures for the coercion of the American colonies were especially repugnant to his sense of justice" (V, 287). As supportive as he was of the American cause, Robinson-Morris was also critical of Dr. Franklin, whose inflammatory writings are here compared to Fawkes's gunpowder. Period-style quarter calf with marbled paper–covered sides, leather edges tooled in blind, spine with gilt-stamped title and elegant small decorations at head and foot. Pages age-toned; three leaves with minor staining. Title-page with repaired chip to outer margin, traces of early inked inscriptions in center of page, and partially shaved inscription in upper margin. Last text page with inked inscription in lower margin, partially shaved at beginning of inscription.

Amer. Didot aîné 1774 - One volume in small 8vo ; pp. 324 ; contemporary speckled calf, re-backed using the original spine strip, spine richly gilt with red gilt lettering-piece, red edges, marbled endpapers, endpapers a bit browned, top margin with clear signs of humidity, else clean and crisp, a good copy. A new edition, first published 1768. Nicolas Baudeau (1739-1792) was the founder of the periodical Éphémérides du citoyen. Dupont de Nemours converted him to Physiocracy in 1766 and in the following years he became an important promoter of the physiocratic doctrine.

[4 (including initial blank)] ff., 182 pp.. [1774] There were two 1774 editions of this manual for the Spanish cavalry and dragoons: one was a quarto with folding plates, the other this pocket, unillustrated octavo — clearly, the more personal, portable production and the one more vulnerable to destruction. It begins with general trumpet and drum calls for field, camp, and battle and proceeds to those specific for certain maneuvers, for the dragoons, etc. It then moves on to formations, and ends with instructions for movements on foot and for the use of carbines. Searches of NUC, WorldCat, and CCPBE locate => only two copies of this octavo edition worldwide, in the national libraries of Spain and Chile. Contemporary mottled sheep with gilt spine extra and marbled endpapers; spine chipped, binding lightly abraded. Front hinge (inside) open; text block firmly attached to binding. Some very light waterstaining and one short marginal note; a nice, clean copy.

A Paris, 1774. 4 vol. in 16° (170 x 105 mm), pp. n XII, 4 cc. geo. rip., 1 tav. rip.; 360, 8 cc. rip.; 463; 437, (3).

"L'Admiral's work originally appeared in 1740 with twenty-five plates (an exact reprint appeared in 1762); this 1774 edition, the first complete, was published with an additional eight plates which had been given to Houttuyn by the artist".         Letters Written by the Late Right Honourable Philip Dormer Stanhope, Earl of Chesterfield, to His Son, Philip Stanhope, Esq; Late Envoy Extraordinary at the Court of Dresden (2 Vols. + Supplement)

London: Printed for J. Dodsley in Pall-Mall, 1774. Full leather. Very Good +. A very handsome example of the 1774 1st edition, 1st issue ("quia uroit" on pg. 55, line 16) of Chesterfield's letters, complete in 2 volumes. And including the uncommon 1787 supplement. All 3 volumes uniform quartos, bound in a full contemporary calf and very skillfully rebacked, with raised bands and lovely gilt-titling and ornamentation at the compartments. Boards lightly-bumped at corners and additional very light surface wear, with minimal cracking. The binding is firm, the pages bright and quite clean and the set overall merits a solid VG+. These 395 letters were prepapred for publication by his widow, Lady Chesterfield, within a year of his death. When Lord Chesterfield's illegitimate son turned 5, the Earl began to write a series of letters of advice and wisdom to him. These letters were never intended for publication but when Lord Chesterfield died, his son's widow (his son had died at age 36) realized that his letters to her late husband were a valuable property. Both Edward Gibbon and Horace Walpole declined an invitation to edit the letters for publication. Shortly after their refusal, Mrs. Stanhope signed a contract with James Dodsley. He agreed to pay her 1,500 guineas for the right to publish the letters and immediately advertised in London newspapers (November 1773) that they would be "speedily published"; the forthcoing book was advertised for the following February and March (1774). Angry at Chesterfield's refusal to patronize his "Dictionary", Samuel Johnson censured the Letters for "teaching the morals of a whore, and the manners of a dancing master" but even he admitted that they "might be made a very pretty book. Take out the immorality, and it should be put into the hands of every young gentleman". (Rothschild 596; Gulick 2; Aresty p. 310; not in Heltzel {which lists a 20th century reprint}).

Blackstone's great achievement was to popularize the law and the traditions which had influenced its formation. He did for the English what the imperial publication of Roman law did for the people of Rome... The Commentaries are not only a statement of the law of Blackstone's day, but the best history of English law as a whole which had yet appeared... the skillful manner in which Blackstone uses his authorities new and old, and the analogy of other systems of law, to illustrate the evolution of the law of his day, had a vast influence both in England and America, in implanting in the profession a sound tradition of the historical development of the law..."
