The history of the bucaniers of America

London: Printed for T. Evans, near York-Buildings; and W. Otridge, opposite the New Church in the Strand 12mo (17.3 cm; 6.875"). 2 vols. I: [4], 318 pp. II: [2], 360, [12] pp.. 1774 Influential and very readable English translation of De Americaanse zeerovers, here in the fifth edition. As noted on the title-page, the work contains "I. The exploits and adventures of Le Grand, Lolonois, Roche Brasiliano, Bat the Portuguese, Sir H. Morgan, &c. II. The dangerous voyage and bold attempts of Capt. Sharp, Watlin, Sawkins, Coxon, and others, in the South Sea. III. A journal of a voyage into the South Sea by the Free-booters of America, from 1684 to 1689. IV. A relation of a voyage of the Sieur de Montauban, captain of the free-booters, in Guinea, in the year 1695." Exquemeling served some 20 years as a barber-surgeon among the pirates until 1674. He has much to say about the social and political situation in Mexico, Central America (especially Panama), and the Caribbean islands, with considerable attention being paid to the situation of slaves and free blacks as well as the Native American populations. This work was first published in 1678 in Dutch and later translated, with varying degrees of accuracy, into Spanish, French, and English. Of this edition Sabin writes: "This second fifth edition is that of 1771 with a new date." Provenance: Signature of G.W. Phipps on title-page of each volume. Recent quarter calf over marbled paper–covered boards and spine with raised bands, black leather labels, and gilt decorations/lettering, edges a faded speckled red; glue action on first and last few leaves from a previous binding. Signatures as above, some dog-ears, a few small spots; one very short marginal tear, another margin lacking some paper, light age-toning. => An engaging history of piracy in a neat, sound pair of books.

        Institutionum Oratorium [Institutes of Oratory]

1774 - QUINTILIAN. Institutionum Oratoriarum Libri XII. Basel: Joannis Bebelii, 1529. Folio (8 by 12-1/2 inches), early 20th-century half vellum, manuscript title in ink on spine. $1800.Early Latin edition of Quintilian's Institutes of Oratory, an encyclopedia of Roman rhetorical and educational practices, detailing the proper training of an orator."This work gives a complete course of instruction in rhetoric, including all that is necessary for training in practical elocution, from the preliminary education of boyhood and earliest youth to the time of appearance in public. It describes a perfect orator, who, according to Quintilian, should be not only skillful in rhetoric, but also of good moral character, and concludes with practical advice. Especially interesting is the first book, which gives the principles of training and instruction, and the tenth book, for its criticisms on the Greek and Latin prose authors and poets recommended to the orator for special study" (Peck, 1356). Nearly forgotten during the Middle Ages, the Institutionum Oratoriarum was rediscovered during the Renaissance and exerted a strong influence on Renaissance and 17th-century prose style and literary criticism. First published in 1470. Publisher's woodcut device on title page and verso of final (errata) leaf. Numerous woodcut initials. Text in Latin. Small bookseller's label.Text generally quite clean. Quarto, contemporary full dark brown calf rebacked with original spine laid down, red morocco spine label. $7500.First edition of the official account of Phipps' polar voyage, with three folding maps, 12 engraved folding or double-page plates, and numerous charts and tables, 11 of which are folding.Commodore Phipps, later Lord Mulgrave, led this expedition in June 1773 "for the purpose of discovering a route to India through the North Polar regions. North of Spitzbergen the sea was absolutely blocked with ice and the vessels had to return. Although unsuccessful the voyage was an important addition to nautical science, and the account of it contains a descriptive catalogue of the natural productions of Spitzbergen. The expedition is also of interest from the fact that Lord Nelson, then 14, accompanied it as a midshipman, and distinguished himself by his encounter with a bear" (Maggs II:870). The account includes "the valuable appendix to the work [which] gives geographical and meteorological observations, zoological and botanical records, accounts of the distillation of fresh water from the sea, and astronomical observations" (Hill, 206-7).         Instruçoens Com que El Rey Meu Senhor manda passar ao Estado da India o Reverendo Arcebispo de Goa, Primaz do Oriente

      - Instructions from the Marquis de Pombal to the Archbishop of Goa, on the ruling of Goa. N.d. [ca. 1774]. N.p. [Lisbon?]. In folio (344 mm x 215 mm). 2 [blanks] + 3 ff. + 1 [blank] + 49 ff. + 2 [blanks]; complete. Contemporary calf, boards tooled in gilt with a heavy interlacing pattern, raised bands to spine, also tooled in gilt, minor losses of leather to head and foot of spine, and some wormholes. Excellent condition, very fresh and clean; contemporary manuscript on paper, possibly a secretarial copy, executed in a clear and very legible handwriting. Interesting manuscript, compiling the instructions sent by Sebastiao de Carvalho e Mello (1699 – 1782) to Francisco da Assuncao e Brito, Archbishop of Goa from 1774 until 1783, one of the most significant Portuguese colonies overseas. Carvalho, better know as the Marquis de Pombal, was one of the most prominent Portuguese statesmen of the 18th century, having performed as Prime Minister to Jose I of Portugal; it is under him that the Autos de Fe (and thus undermining the Inquisition´s power in Portugal) were terminated, and the discrimination to new Christians ended, tolerance to Jews –requesting Nobles to marry with Jewish families- as part of the modernization of the country, and abolished slavery in India –not in Brazil. The measures adopted by the Marquis de Pombal affecting the Church did not end there; his term as Minister ended with the death of the King, succeeded by Pedro III and Maria I, who detested him.         An Essay on the Constitutional Power of Great-Britain Over the Colonies in America; With the Resolves of the Committee for the Province of Pennsylvania, and Their Instructions to Their Representatives in Assembly.

Philadelphia: Bradford, 1774. First. hardcover. very good. vii, 128 pages. Short slim 8vo, handsomely bound in modern 3/4 brown morocco (some light foxing, otherwise very good). Philadelphia: William and Thomas Bradford, 1774. A very good copy. John Dickinson was a brillant lawyer who wrote his first patriotic tract, against the Stamp Act, in 1765. He became a leading patriot with the 1768 publication of his Letters from a Farmer in Pennsylvania. In 1774, he became chairman of the Philadelphia Commitee of Correspondence. This pamphlet consists of three papers he wrote which were adopted by that committee in July, 1774. "They state the principles upon which the colonies based their claim to redress; instructions to the Congressional delegates to be chosen by the Assembly; and a treatise on the consitutional power of Great Britain to tax the colonies." Dictionary of American Biography V, p. 300. Dickinson always hoped for peaceful reconciliation with Great Britain. He voted against sending aid to Boston in 1774 and later voted against the Declaration of Independence. Howes D-326. Evans 13247. Sabin 20040. Adams, American Controversy, 74-28a.         Open Rebellion: Defying the Tyranny of the Intolerable Acts: “Resolved that it is the Indispensable duty of the Inhabitants of this County … to prevent the sitting of the Respective court…the Inhabitants of this County will attend in person the next inferior court of common pleas and general session…properly Armed to repel any hostile force which may be employed…”

Grafton MA, Aug 31 1774/Sept 5, 1774. "[Captain Luke Drury.] Manuscript Document. Grafton, Mass. September 5, 1774. 4 pp. This document embodies one of the first instances of open rebellion against the Crown, and records a critical step in the formation of an independent government. The manuscript starts with a copy of resolves issued on August 31, 1774, in response to one of the Intolerable Acts, by a convention of the Worcester County Committees of Correspondence. The Intolerable Act barred the commonwealth from holding town meetings. Delegates conclude that the act rendered the royal charter “null and void,” and they resolve that the various towns should take over the function of the British-run court system. They ask citizens to select their own town officials, choose representatives for a Provincial Convention, and take action to prevent the courts from sitting under the new system. One resolve specifies that citizens attend the upcoming court session “properly Armed to repel any hostile force” sent by the governor, and another votes to send “Letters by Post to other Committees” should an invasion appear imminent.Remarkably, the document not only shows a key step in separation between the Crown and the colony, but also shows the chain of action; county and town. The Worcester resolve is followed by a record of the Grafton town meeting held to consider those measures. It’s a fascinating look at the grassroots nature of independence, uniting citizens of the smaller towns to take over their own governmental functions. This pivotal step helps explain why the towns were ready to send militia the day they received word of the Lexington alarm. On September 5, 1774, Captain Luke Drury moderated a Grafton town meeting held to consider the resolves. By a unanimous vote, the townspeople agreed. More than 15 town officers and militia leaders were elected, as recorded here. The notes authorize the new officials to “inflict punishment” on disorderly individuals – essentially, to substitute for the now invalid court system. In response to the resolution, the next day, when the court met, more than 5,000 Worcester men, “properly Armed,” leading to the courthouse. The royal justices were quickly persuaded that it was in their best interest to stay the proceedings.Partial Transcript:“Whereas this Charter…as well as laws enacted by virtue of the same…by the Parliament of Great Britain without the least coler of right or justice…Declared in part null and void… forming a Complete System of Tyranny and whereas no Power on Earth hath a right without the Consent of this Province to alter the minutest tittle of the Charter…as the sitting of said Court, may have a Tendency to Effect the good people of this county in such manner as may Insensibly lead them to submit to the Chains of Slavery…Therefore Resolved that it is the Indispensable duty of the Inhabitants of this County … to prevent the sitting of the Respective court…the Inhabitants of this County will attend in person the next inferior court of common pleas and general session…properly Armed to repel any hostile force which may be employed…”Luke Drury (1734-1811) of Grafton, Massachusetts joined the militia in 1757 during the French and Indian Wars. As captain of a company of Minutemen, he responded to the Lexington Alarm, and later joined Colonel Jonathan Ward's regiment to fight at Bunker Hill. Drury and his men served in different areas during the war, from West Point to Grafton, where his company guided military stores. He also supported the Continentals financially, at one point giving £50 fifty pounds to enlist soldiers in Grafton. In 1786-1787, Drury became deeply involved in Shays' Rebellion, a tax revolt led by farmers in western Massachusetts. The uprising was quashed, and Drury imprisoned as “a person dangerous to the state.” He was eventually released on good behavior. Drury remained active in state and local politics, serving terms as a constable, deputy sheriff, tax collector, assessor, selectman, and state legislator."

        Angeli che portano un libro

1774. Acquaforte, 1774 - 75 circa, firmata in lastra in basso a destra "Io Dominicus Filius delin. et sculp." ; a sinistra l'iscrizione 'Io. Bapta Tiepolo pinx, in Sacello B.M. de Monte Carmelo Venetijs". "Etching, 1774 - 75, lettered along bottom 'Io. Bapta Tiepolo pinx, in Sacello B.M. de Monte Carmelo Venetijs" and "Io Dominicus Filius delin. et sculp." After G.B. Tiepolo. Only state. A fine impression, printed on contemporary laid paper, trimmed to the platemark, light trace of ink in the middle, otherwise very good condition. This etching reproduces one of the nine ceiling canvanes paintend by G. B. Tiepolo for Sala del Capitolo of the Scuola Grande dei Carmini, in Venice, between 1739 and 1749. The scene depicts Angels bearing the book containing the rules of the confraternity. This sheet is dating from the 1774 - 75. Along with three other sheets, depicting the scenes of the side compartments of the ceiling, they were not included in the first edition of the ""Catalogue"" to G.B. Tiepolo, 1774, which are only announced by whitespace with numbers 1 and 2, whereas they were included in the second edition, 1775. Unrecorded by De Vesme."

– Goed. IV 1, 820, 44 alpha; Bibelsammlung Württemberg. LB, E 1586. Kosch I 239; Jacob/Majewski 343.

Amsterdam, Johannes Sluyter, 1774.

1774. Large folio (430 x 270 mm). (4), 34, (2) pp. With etched and engr. vignette on title page (2 people in a woods, in a decorative cartouche including 2 butterflies), and 33 numbered etched and engr. plates showing 70 kinds of insects (numbered in the text), vignette and all plates in original colour. Contemp. boards covered with sprinkled paper, sewn on 4 vellum tapes. The second, greatly enlarged edition of a set of finely etched and engraved plates depicting the metamorphosis of 70 sorts of butterflies, moths and other flying insects in their natural surroundings, the specimens collected, drawn, etched and engraved, and the descriptions written by Jacob l'Admiral (1700-70), first published in 1740 with only 25 plates. The present edition adds 8 plates prepared (along with their descriptive text) by l'Admiral but not previously published, along with a 2-page foreword by the editor, Martinus Houttuyn (1720-98). Most plates show the species as egg, larva, pupa and adult, both male and female, placed on the plants they frequent in their natural habitat. Scientifically it was a great advance over all that went before, including the pioneering work of Maria Sibylla Merian. The present foreword tells us that l'Admiral began studying butterflies at the age of ten and gives Houttuyn's personal recollections of l'Admiral and his work. He collected the specimens during thirty years of travel and intended the first edition with 25 plates to be one of four parts for a total of 100 plates. He finished only 8 additional plates before his death in 1770 and had not yet published them or his descriptions. After l'Admiral's death the bookseller Sluyter bought all the copperplates at auction and Houttuyn prepared the new descriptions from l'Admiral's manuscript. A few plates were revised after the first edition, probably by l'Admiral himself. Plate XII depicts a tulip. - With the 1896 bookplate (signed "TM") of "Tine. v. H", the artist and former prostitute Martina Hogervorst (1865-1928) who married the lithographer Theo van Hoytema in 1891 (divorced 1902), with a bird, insects and plants.         Legal Manuscript Document about ""Slave Stealing" in Colonial North Carolina. John Collson. "The King against Jas. Wishart."

North Carolina: 1774. Legal document, single leaf, about 8vo size (6" 7 1/4"), 2 pp., text on both sides. Paper very browned, some ink smudging, a few tiny holes at old folds; otherwise about very good. This is a somewhat scarce colonial southern slave document where it appears that a David Smith had one of his slaves swiped from him. "…David Smith… made oath that…Wishart came to his house and with force did fraudentaly take and cary away a Negroe Boy Named James the property of…Smith greatly to his damage and agt the peace of his sovn lord the king his Crown and Dignity…" An order of arrest for both Smith and the slave, signed also by the law enforcement officer who made the arrests. Interestingly, years latter, "slave stealing" was typically the work of abolitionists trying to help slaves escape .While it is not totally clear, the judge in this case was a wealthy businessman and land-owner and may have been a British Loyalist fleeing to England after the war.

Antwerp: A Anvers, Chez J. Grangé Imprimeur de la Ville, Chez qui le Catalogue se distribue pour le prix de deux Escalins & demi, ou 30 sols de France., 1774. First Edition. Very good antiquarian condition. 8vo; [10], 428 pp. 202 lots of paintings, 88 lots of miniatures, 535 lots of drawings, 1249 lots of engravings, 695 additional lots of engravings by Rubens and imitators, 311 lots of medals, and 421 lots of sculptures, faience, crystal, etc; PRICED THROUGHOUT by a contemporary hand, including buyer's names for all the paintings (certain portfolios of prints were withdrawn from the sale and are therefore unpriced). Recent sympathetic wrappers. Intermittent waterstains, but the paper stock is strong and crisp. Priced copy of the very important sale catalogue of the astounding art collection of van Schorel - one of the finest in the Low Countries at that time - which included masterpieces by Rubens, Van Dyck, Rembrandt, Teniers, Jordaens, Rembrandt, as well as hundreds of drawings, engravings, print portfolios, ancient and modern medals, sculptures, curiosities, optical instruments, an amber collection from Queen Christina of Sweden, artifacts from the Holy Land and Italy, Turkish firearms, and even Japanese and Chinese porcelain. The sale was organized in 3,501 lots (sic). The arrangement of the catalogue fosters scholarly inquiry: the lots are classed according to school and artist: in a number of instances there are good descriptions of the properties which include dimensions and other identifying information. Van Schorel (1716-1778) was First Mayor and first Director of the Royal Academy of the City of Antwerp. With more than 3,500 lots at auction, it is not surprising that artwork and other property from his great collections has been acquired by the foremost museums in the world (e.g. the fine Otto van Veen drawing of the Martyrdom of Saint Anthony now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Accession Number: 2012.279). Our attention is drawn to two digital surrogates of the van Schorel art sale catalogue online, the first issued by the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the second by the Institut Nationale d'histoire d'Art, Paris. Simply stated: these digitized versions are grossly incomplete: only about 20% of the PMA copy is actually priced (the INHA copy is only about 5% priced), compared to ours which is priced throughout. More importantly, our copy was bears unique contemporary annotations that call into question attributions made to a number of important paintings, including the three Rubens paintings which appeared as Lot 1 ("Ce tableaux a des bonnes parties mais il est trop maniere pour etre de Rubens"), Lot 2 ("Ce tableaux merite les eloges qu'on lui donne cependant il est douteux s'il est de Rubens"), and Lots 3, 29, 88, etc. That the PMA / INHA copies make no reference to the van Schorel's collection of 3,200 Rembrandt etchings (pp. 266-267) - the most comprehensive ever formed by a single individual - and the price paid for it (4000 fl. - an astronomical sum in those days) does not support an argument that the digital surrogates in question are "acceptable" when so much critical information is completely absent. The PMA / INHA copies fail to reference the five Jacob Jordaens tapestry cartoons of the Life of Charlemagne that were not in the sale, but are described in the Avertissement: Jordaens' Charlemagne series is justly considered to be one of his most important, for which see K. Nelson, "Jacob Jordaens: Design for Tapestry" (1996). The cartoon of the "Envoys of Kalif Harun-al-Rashid bearing Presents to Charlemagne," which is practically a finished painting, is now at the Louvre. Lugt 2299.
