Giuseppe VASI (Corleone, 27 Agosto 1710 - Roma, 16 Aprile 1782)
[Click Below for Full Description]

Vaillant, 1752. 2nd ed. corrected and considerably improved. xl,[8, contents],451,[12, contents];xvi,483,[1, advertisement], [46, index], [2, advertisements]pp. Contemporary full calf, raised gilt- ruled spine bands, gilt-ornamented compartments, red morocco spine labels, housed in custom cloth slipcase. Hinges tender, some wear to spine ends and corners, calf rubbed, some worming to lower free corner of preliminary leaves of Vol. One, else a very good copy. "In many ways one of the most remarkable works of the eighteenth century, `The Spirit of Law', owing in the main to the high plane of generalization on which it is written, defies easy classification and for that reason has never enjoyed a great popularity . The most distinctive aspect of this immense syllabus is its moderation: a quality not designed to achieve official approval in 1748. It is an always original survey which is neither doctrinaire, visionary, eccentric, nor over-systematic"-Printing and the Mind of Man, 197. Thomas Nugent's translation of the 1748 French edition was first published in 1750, Montesquieu wrote in a letter dated 18 October 1750: "I cannot help myself, Sir, in giving you my thanks. I gave them to you already, because you translated for me. I give them to you now because you translated so well. Your translation has no other fault than that of the original; and I must remain indebted to you for disguising them so well." [Attr … [Click Below for Full Description]

Your translation has no other fault than that of the original; and I must remain indebted to you for disguising them so well."
