CALLIGRAPHY - HUNTSMAN’S CERTIFICATE: DESS DURCHLEUCHTIGEN FÜRSTEN UND HERRN HERRN CARL HERZOGEN ZU WÜRTEMBERG U: TECK.

Ink and gouache on parchment, with two wax seals in the lower part (Very Good, soft folds, small smeared sports, tiny holes in parchment) 35,5 x 51,5 cm (14 x 20.3 inches). - Cleebronn, Germany, 1752. A magnificent huntsman’s certificate, with unique elaborate calligraphy in the title was issued in 1752 in Baden Württemberg, Germany, by an office of Charles Eugene, Duke of Württemberg. This highly decorative document on parchment, with an elaborate calligraphic ornament in the upper part, was made by the hunting administration of Charles Eugene (Carl Eugen), Duke of Württemberg (1728-1793), as a hunting permit for Johann Friedrich Hesselt from the Württemberg region of Zabergäu. The permit was signed and sealed at the bottom by a court head of the hunting office August Ernst von Rieben and Georg Adam Schoch. The images in the upper part, made by a skilful calligraphic hand, showcase hunting scenes with hunters on horses on deer. A deer was a heraldic animal of the house of Württemberg and from 15th century on also the most desirable animal in regional hunting. Deer’s parts were used as trophies and for medical purposes.         Antique Print-JAPAN-JAPON-JAPANESE EMPIRE-Bellin-c. 1752

      - Antique print, titled: 'Carte de L'Empire de Japon ( ).' - Map of the Empire of Japan. Centered on the Bay of Osaka, this map covers from Hirado (here identified as I. Firando) and Nagasaki to Akita (Aquita), to include most of Tokugawa (Edo) Era Japan. The island of Hokkaido is not included in this map. Various towns, harbors, bays, provinces, mountains and daimyo are noted, although many are speculative. Engraving / etching on hand laid (verge) paper. Made by 'Jacques-Nicolas Bellin' after an anonymous artist. Jacques-Nicolas Bellin (1703 - 1772) was one of the most important cartographers of the 18th century. With a career spanning some 50 years, Bellin is best understood as geographe de cabinet and transitional mapmaker spanning the gap between 18th and early 19th century cartographic styles. His long career as Hydrographer and Ingénieur Hydrographe at the French Dépôt des cartes et plans de la Marine resulted in hundreds of high quality nautical charts of practically everywhere in the world. A true child of the Enlightenment Era, Bellin's work focuses on function and accuracy tending in the process to be less decorative than the earlier 17th and 18th century cartographic work. Unlike many of his contemporaries, Bellin was always careful to cite his references and his scholarly corpus consists of over 1400 articles on geography prepared for Diderot's Encyclopedie. Bellin, despite his extraordinary success, may not have enjoyed his work, which is described as "long, unpleasant, and hard." In addition to numerous maps and charts published during his lifetime, many of Bellin's maps were updated (or not) and published posthumously. He was succeeded as Ingénieur Hydrographe by his student, also a prolific and influential cartographer, Rigobert Bonne. Condition: Very good, given age. Irregular bottom edge as issued. Original folds as issued. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully. The overall size is ca. 15.4 x 10.6 inch. The image size is ca. 12.2 x 8.8 inch. The overall size is ca. 39 x 27 cm. The image size is ca. 31 x 22.3 cm.

        Poems,

[1752?] 1752 - on various Subjects and Occasions. First Edition 8vo., [4], 360 pp. Slight staining around the edges of the title-page and final leaf caused by the turn-ins, dark ink stain in the blank fore-margin of B3, single crease across the centre of the first few quires probably due to the sheets being too tightly sewn. Contemporary sheep, spine ruled in gilt with a single small tool in each panel (spine label missing, covers a little scuffed and stained, edges and corners bumped and rubbed, headcaps a little ragged single small hole in the second band on the spine). Edinburgh, for Ch. Alexander, and are sold at his House in Geddes's Close; where Subscribers may call for their Copies, Foxon p.681. The title-page appears to be a cancel. The title-page is undated but the book is usually thought to have been published between 1751 and 1752. A copy at the British Library has a manuscript date of 1752 on the title-page (according to Foxon this copy is now missing). Alexander Robertson (c.1670-1749) was the thirteenth holder of the barony of Struan and chief of clan Robertson. Robertson took part in a number of Jacobite rebellions but was only punished lightly. Known for his reckless, savage and misogynistic ways, he is said to have composed many of his poems whilst drunk. His portrait, now in the National Gallery of Scotland, shows him holding a glass of wine aloft. The book is common institutionally but according to ABPC the last (and only) copy of this book to appear at auction was at Lawrence's, Feb 15, 1979 (lot 379). 1. W Burgh, small neat signature on the title-page. 2. Henry Fanshawe Davies (1837-1914) of Elmley Castle, Worcestershire; Late 19th-century engraved armorial bookplate on the front pastedown. 3. James. O. Edwards, book collector, small modern book label on the front pastedown. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Rare edition of this classic in Obstetrics and Gynecology. Justine Siegemundin was the most celebrated German midwife of the 17th century. In 1672 she obtained a copy of De Graff's book of generation, which started her on her career as a really scientific midwife. Basically self-taught she developed her skills to the degree that she was made Court Midwife by Frederic III and the royal family of Prussia. The book, a result of her own experience, is of major interest and importance for its original obstetrical illustrations not copied from Roesslin or Rueff. The fact that the work was written in German instead of Latin aroused a great deal of criticism. The major portion of the book consists of a dialogue between Justine and her pupil Christina. Generously illustrated with instructive copperplates, the "Siegemundin" had a great influence and new editions appeared up to 1756.cf. Garrison & Morton 6149 (1st. An interesting essay by the London merchant and director of the East India Company, Sir Matthew Decker (1679-1749), whose reputation as an economic and trade writer, according to Palgrave, rests on just two papers, of which this is one. "The great scheme developed in this treatise consists in the replacement of all custom duties by an excise on houses. This he would impose in proportion to the rating, with total exemption for the poor. Its chief advantages are, he urges, (1) just and certain incidence, (2) convenience in time of collection, (3) economy. He thus forestalls the four canons of taxation enunciated by Adam Smith".

Bergamo: Pietro Lancellotti, 1752. Good. 12mo., 145 x 85 (binding). Contemporary Italian vellum (worn and unsympathetically repaired along joints). Profusely annotated throughout in a microscopic hand. This copy is noteworthy for the profusion of tiny but very neat annotations throughout the text (mostly in the "Purgatory" section), much of which is underlined for emphasis by an early reader. The annotations were written in red ink and pencil, not only in the margins but in between verses, within the Arguments, and at the ends of the Cantos. This edition by Pierantonio Serassi is considered to be both elegant and accurate; the editor adds a biography of Dante Alighieri and a vocabulary of "obscure words," and two very useful indexes (Proper Names and "Rimario") at the end. Provenance: inscription of "G.G. Burkhard" on first blank.

First published in 1719, Heister's work on surgery became a standard text book and went through many editions. It was translated into Latin, English, Dutch, French, Italian, Spanish, and Japanese. Heister was the leading surgeon of the time and the founder of scientific surgery in Germany.W.

Amsterdam ; Leipzig: Chez Arkste'e & Merkus, 1752. First French ed. Hardcover. A fair copy only. Several plates lacking but many technical and some pictorial plates and maps remain. Both frontispieces present. Mild wear and numerous superficial insect nibbles to spine cloth and boards of both volumes (mostly spines). A one-pass albeit careful collation (with room for minor error!) shows illustration to page "(a)" of Tome 1 neatly cut out; ten plates and fold-out illustrations also lacking to Tome I: vi, vii, xiv, xvi, xix-xxv (of 25 total); and eight lacking to Tome 2: xxvi-xxvii, xxx-xxxiii, xxxv-xxvi (of 21 "planches" total); pages 417-424 of Tome 1 loose and laid in; same for Tome II, pages 49-56; small tear to outer margin p363, Tome 1. Other minor flaws typical of a work of this age may be present. Some folding maps intact. Both volumes' text block clean with very sparse to light foxing throughout both volumes, chiefly to margins. Appears to lack large folding map of the Pacific Coast. All plates of Tome II, Part 2 "Observations astronomicas y physicas..." appear present. This copy has survived the hands of a breaker and, while lacking plates, remains a tight, clean and quite functional copy of a monumnetal work. Worthy of care and restoration.. Two large quarto volumes rebound in 20th century beige quarter cloth and pale green paper-backed boards; modern endpapers and paste-downs; frontispieces to both volumes, [28 of original 46] leaves of plates (some folded): illustrations, maps, plans, diagrams.

Many similar descriptions were repeated in detail in the middle of the nineteenth century by anatomists who were apparently not aware that Weitbrecht was the first to describe them. Ligaments in the knee joint that bear the eponyms of Wrisberg, Humphry, Robert, and perhaps others, were originally well described by Weitbrecht" (Hagelin, Kinetic Jottings, p. 84).

Political discourses. ...... The second edition.

Edinburgh, printed by R. Fleming, for A. Kincaid and A. Donaldson. 1752. 12mo., (6) + 304pp., contemporary calf, spine gilt with raised bands and original gilt lettered label, a very good copy indeed. First published earlier in 1752, this was Hume's principal collection of essays on political economy, including commerce, luxury, money, interest, balance of trade, taxes, public credit and so on. It is not, in fact, a 'second edition' but a reimpression of the first, revised and then reimposed in the new (smaller) format. [See Chuo]. Oft quoted by booksellers is Hume's rather sad observation that Political Discourses> was 'the only work of mine that was successful on the first publication: it was well received abroad and at home'.
