[DAMOURS, Louis.]
Amsterdam: François Joly, 1750. Two vols in one, 12mo (166 × 95 mm), pp. xii, 184; 200, plus engraved portrait and 2 engraved titles. Slightly browned throughout, with occasional stains. Twentienth-century red three-quarter morocco, spine attractively gilt. A good copy First edition of a bestselling epistolary novel. It purports to be a collection of letters by the famous courtesan, Anne 'Ninon' de Lenclos (1620-1705, friend of Boileau, La Fontaine, Racine and Molière) to Madame de Sevigné. Voltaire (and others) wrongly assumed the author to be Crébillon fils. It was frequently reprinted and translated into several European languages (including the English translation by Elizabeth Griffith, who assumed them to be genuine). Cioranescu 22167; Gay II, 828.

Leipzig Jacob Schuster 1750 - Titel, [6 Bl.], 478 S.; Titel, 491 S.; Titel, 604 S. Mit 4 Frontispizen von Benigeroth (wiederholt ) u. zus. 29 Kupfertafeln (u.a. von Brühl). Kl.-8vo (17,5). HLdr d.

Bible. Psalms. German. Metrical Versions. Ambrosius Lobwasser. 1750.
Zu finden bey Joh. Henrich Stocks ältesten Tochter, 1750. An eye-catching and physically pleasing copy of the 1750 printing of the Marburger Gesang-buch with the final section being a printing the text of the Heidelberg catechism, printed in Fraktur (i.e, black letter) as is the rest of the volume. The melodies are sporadically indicated in diamond-shaped notation. => Overall, this is an important text in the liturgies of the Calvinistic and Zwinglian Churches. Binding: Vellum over light wood boards with bevelled edges; round hollow-back spine with false bands created by tooling in black; endpapers of a stencilled gilt leaf -design on orange "wallpaper;" all edges gilt and gauffered. Covers => elaborately tooled all over in black (not embossed with a plaque as was another style of this type of painted vellum binding), and then => painted in red and black. Such bindings as this are known in Germany as "Bauern Einbände," or "Peasant Bindings" -- but, though betraying a strong influence of folk art, they were certainly not for peasants! The style almost certainly developed in Hungary with early examples first appearing in southern Germany, and it was to gain greatest favor in northern Germany and Holland during the 18th century. Provenance: Kovel family to at least 1779; front and rear blank pages filled with family birth and death information in German and English for the Kovel and related families, 1729-79. In the 20th century in the collection of Estelle Doheny with her red morocco bookplate.
