MONTESQUIEU, Charles de Secondat, Baron de.
London: for J. Nourse, and P. Vaillant,, 1750. Translated from the French … With Corrections and Additions communicated by the Author. 2 volumes, octavo (198 x 122 mm). Rebound to style in brown quarter calf, red and green calf labels to spine, compartments ruled and decorated in gilt, marbled paper boards, decorative rule to boards in blind. Contents evenly toned and some minor foxing, a very good copy. First English edition. One of the central texts in the history of 18th-century thought, L'Esprit des Loix was a huge influence both on English law, especially as mediated by William Blackstone, and on those who framed the American Constitution. Blackstone's Commentaries, Hamilton's Federalist Papers and Tocqueville's Democracy in America are all thoroughly imbued with Montesquieu's theories. In particular, Montesquieu is credited with the idea that the powers of government should be separated and balanced in order to guarantee the freedom of the individual, a key concept in the creation of the US Constitution. No English language edition was published in America until 1802. The translation is by the prolific Irish-born author and skilful translator of works mostly from the French Thomas Nugent (c.1700–1772).

COSTUMES - CARNIVAL].
Baumgärtel, Die Almanache, Kalender und Taschenbücher 1750-1860 der Landesbibliothek Coburg, p. 32; Köhring 111; WorldCat (3 copies). Very rare, first and only published part of a series of hand-coloured carnival costume plates, each of the 12 with a letterpress description in German and French. Only plates 9 and 10 bear the name of the German draughtsman and engraver Friedrich Wilhelm Nettling, best known for his portrait of Bach, but all may have been engraved by him. The mostly comical or farcical plates illustrate a fairy with her ??entourage, a Chinese man, Don Quixote and Sancho Panza, a group of beast people and many other extraordinary figures. Two figures in one plate wear funnels as hats, like the Tin Man in The Wizard of Oz. Besides the 12 plates in the booklet itself, the engravings on the boards show two male figures (gymnasts?, one in a clown-like costume) on the front and a dancing woman with a tambourine on the back. With some minor stains and the front of the binding slightly damaged in the lower margin and lower right corner, spine cracked. Good copy. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Bell'esemplare. Samuel Johnson definì la presente traduzione a performance which no age or nation could hope to equal. Precede un lungo Essay on the life, writings and learning of Homer. BOSOLINI STEFANO.
Ottavio Puccinelli, 1750. In 8vo (18), perg. coeva (con 2 disegni floreali coevi a penna sui piatti), pp. 255. Ottima copia. Etimologia.., III. Sintassi.., IV. Prosodia..). Da pp. 16-22 riassume i trattati cittadineschi sull'e e l'o aperti e chiusi.. (Trabalza, St. della grammatica it., 1908, pp. 391-392).
