1750. Antique print, titled: 'La Place publique a Mannheim. Der Markt zu Mannheim. ' - A view of the market at Mannheim. Vues d'Optique, also known as "perspective views" or "prospects," were popular in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. These hand-colored engravings of picturesque views such as town scenes, landscapes, and foreign and exotic architectural delights were widely collected, and viewing them was all the rage among the upper-classes as after-dinner entertainment. They were meant to be viewed through a zograscope (or "perspective glass"), a simple device comprised of a curved lens and a mirror, resulting in almost three-dimensional images. Similar prints were produced to be viewed though "peep show boxes" (also called "raree boxes"). Prints were inserted into these enclosed boxes, then viewed through a convex lens placed in a hole (or holes) in the box. As many of these prints had cut-out areas which were covered by colored paper or textured cloth on the verso, candles were necessary to provide a light source behind the prints; when viewed, it appeared as if colored lights were emanating from the almost three-dimensional prints. Some optical prints were also used to be turned into night view scenes: parts of the image were cut out, perforated, the opening sometimes replaced by a transparent image, to be illuminated from behind, creating an exiting light scene. The popularity of these delightful prints was widespread, and these are examples of a fascinating cultural phenomenon that is now almost completely unknown. NEEDHAM, John Turberville
Eight folding engraved plates. xviii, 524, [4], 29 pp. Small 8vo, cont. polished calf, spine gilt, red morocco lettering piece on spine. Paris: L.E. Ganeau, 1750. First edition, a translation by Louis Anne Lavirotte, of Needham's Account of some New Microscopical Discoveries (1745) and his Observations upon the General Composition and Decomposition of Animal and Vegetable Substances (1749). This edition contains substantial additions by Needham which appear here for the first time, including his "forward-looking theory of reproduction"-D.S.B., X, p. 9. The first English Catholic priest to be elected to the Royal Society of London, Needham (1713-81), developed a theory of generation in this work which placed him in the vitalist camp through its reliance on principles peculiar to living things and its assignment of self-patterning powers to matter. It differed from Buffon's in its denial of chance combinations of mathematically countable genetic traits. The final 29 pages - "Description et Usage du Microscope" - discuss a Cuff-style microscope developed by Passement. Its parts are illustrated on one of the plates. Fine copy with the bookplate of Etienne François Dutour de Salvert (1711-89), experimental physicist, geologist, and botanist from Riom. He wrote several monographs on electricity and natural history and corresponded with a wide range of scientists, including Nollet, Lavoisier, d'Alembert, and Buffon. ? A nice and charming copy.ESTC T120326: "The imprint is false; possibly printed in Germany". Several editions with somewhat diverging titles, some without imprint, were published the same year. There are several later reprints and a number of translations. Bibliotheca Walleriana 4470 for the first Swedish edition from 1819, translated from C. F. X. Mercier's French adaptation from 1799. The author, the Englishman John Hill (1714-75), had, among other things, received the Swedish Order of Vasa and flaunted a degree in medicine from the University of St. Andrews. He published a number of pamphlets with hilarious content, and, after having failed to become a member of Royal Society, he wrote "Lucina sine concubitu", which can be loosely translated as "Pregancy witout intercourse". In this text, Hill claims that women can become pregnant without engaging in any kind of sexual activity. According to Hill, microscopic "animalcula" were present in the air, which at any time could find their way into a womans body and make her pregnant. These "animalcula" could be studied under microscope and already at this early stage of development they bore the shapes of men or women. Ref … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

Ellis, Henry
Gottingen, 1750. [24],19,[4],364,[10]pp. plus two folding maps and nine engraved plates. Antique-style full calf, elaborately blindstamped, spine gilt. Light foxing. Very good. Untrimmed and unopened. The first German edition, and perhaps the rarest of the translations of this important work. The English title, published two years earlier, is A VOYAGE TO HUDSON'S BAY, BY THE DOBBS GALLEY AND CALIFORNIA, IN THE YEARS 1746 AND 1747, FOR DISCOVERING A NORTH WEST PASSAGE.... The first part contains a synopsis of twenty-three English voyages to discover the Northwest Passage and the history of the rise of the Hudson's Bay Company. The second part gives an account of a voyage under Capt. Moor and Francis Smith, on which Ellis served as hydrographer, that finally proved that there was no Northwest Passage from Hudson's Bay. Of prime importance in this work are the many observations on the customs of the Eskimos, which were then practically unknown. HARMSWORTH 19:6447. SABIN 22314.

Bound in contemporary red morocco, spine with raised bands, compartments with elaborate gilt patterns, and paper label with title; boards richly decorated with intricate gilt dentelles. Marbled endpapers. All edges gilt.= A rare originally hand-coloured large paper copy. Only about a fifth of the thousand subscribers purchased this edition, all the others bought the smaller, uncoloured edition which, therefore, is much more common. It is the only major work by the Welsh naturalist, Fellow of the Royal Society, and cleric Griffith Hughes (1707-1758?). It ".included the first description of the grapefruit (also known as "The Forbidden Fruit"). His work was praised by Linnaeus." (Wikipedia). Hughes spent most of his career in Barbados, and this is one of the finest and most important early works on the natural history of the island. This copy has contemporary hand-colouring, which is very rare. Most plates depict the various palm trees from Barbados, drawn by the famous plant artist G. Dionysius Egret. Others show useful crops, and the zoology of Barbados, which has a c … [Click Below for Full Description]

HUME, David.) MONTESQUIEU, Charles de Secondat, Baron de.
Edinburgh: chez G. Hamilton & J. Balfour, 1750. Two volumes, octavo (195 x 120 mm). Contemporary sprinkled calf, raised bands ruled in gilt, lozenge tool to compartments, edges speckled red. Early ownership signatures, red wax seal, and 19th-century armorial bookplate to each front pastedown. Spine labels lacking but titles readable, joints cracked, boards and spines rubbed, small insect damage to left-hand bottom corner of front pastedown and lower margin of first 9 leaves of Volume 1, front free endpaper of Volume 2 partially detached, endleaves lightly spotted. First Edinburgh edition of "one of the most remarkable works of the eighteenth century" (PMM) - Montesquieu's classification of political structures and his comparative and historical political sociology. This edition is particularly appealing as David Hume was closely involved with seeing it through the press. "Later in 1749 Hume helped to put through the press at Edinburgh a translation of some sections of the Esprit des Loix, for which Montesquieu had supplied his final corrections" (Mossner, p. 229). These final corrections are found in the present work as errata leaves at the end of each volume, as well as an "Avis au Lecteur", in which the editor describes the work as "un ouvrage aussi original, où le génie de l'Auteur répond si parfaitement à la grandeur du sujet [.] [Click Below for Full Description]

Before returning home, he had arranged for the leading artist George Dionysius Ehret to prepare plates for his book.
