CALMET, Antoine Augustin.
Circa, 1750. Copper engraving, mounted. Overall dimensions: 48.5 x 60.5 cm. Image size: 30 x 43.4 cm. Detailed engraved view of the interior of the synagogue from Calmet's renowned work. Antoine Augustin Calmet (1672 – 1757), a French Benedictine monk, was one of the most renowned Bible scholars of his day. He taught philosophy and theology at the abbey at Moyenmoutier and during the early years of his career worked on a massive 23-volume commentary of the Bible, which was first published in Paris between 1707 and 1716. By 1726, due to high demand, two further editions of this work had been published, followed by several editions of Latin translation. Calmet's biblical writings established him as a leading scholar, and he spent many years trying to popularize his work of biblical exegesis in the church. This engraving comes from a copy of a later edition of Calmet's commentary.

ca. 1750-1800 265 x 431 mm Etching/engraving/watercolour Pasted onto cardboard. Edges are painted black (for illumination). Good state. An illuminated optical view of the Royal Palace in Paris, with the statue of Louis XIII situated in the middle of the square. The windows and light sources of the buildings are perforated (dots and cut outs). At the back of the print we see that the holes are covered with see-through paper. Some of the holes are covered with red, green and blue paint. This gives the illusion of lights when the print is held in front of a light source. The print itself is coloured in very vibrant colours. Note in pencil on the back, identifying the scene as the Louvre. This is not the case. (Parijs)

LE BRUN, Charles.
I. Tinny, London., N.D. circa 1750. First U.K. edition. Folio. 21 pages printed on rectos only. Title-page engraved cartouche, 19 plates engraved by John Tinny. Original plain grey wrappers. Described by Louis XIV as "the greatest French artist of all time", Le Brun's posthumously published treatise, Méthode pour apprendre à dessiner les passions (1698) in which he promoted the expression of the emotions in painting, had immense influence on art theory for the next two centuries. The passions illustrated, with explanatory notes, are: attention, admiration, admiration with astonishment, veneration, rapture, desire, joy with tranquility, laughter, acute pain, simple bodily pain, sadness, weeping, compassion, scorn, horror, terror or fright, anger, hatred or jealousy and despair. ".... Passion is a Motion of the Soul, residing in the sensitive Part, and makes it follow what it thinks good, and fly from what it thinks hurtful. [Le Brun] says also, that what causes any Passion in Soul, causes particular Motions of the Body, the chief of which he describes. Then, he supposes that the Soul receives the Impression of the Passions in the Brain, and feels the Effects of it at the Heart; and that as the Brain is the Part of the Body where the Soul more immediately exercises its Functions, so the Face is that where it more particularly shews what it feels; for this Reason it is called the Mirror of the Soul." Covers stained and partially defective at inside lower corner of top panel and at spine. Title-page stained at lower margin. Edges a little dusty … [Click Below for Full Description]
