BUFFON. Georges-Louis LECLERC, comte de.
Paris. Imprimerie royale. (16), 286, (6); (10), 158 pp. titles printed in red & black, engr. front. 5 (2 fold. with whales) plates and fold. map. (Nieuwe kaart van Groenland, Ysland en de Straat Davis, 37x31 cm) The rare first edition of 2 works on Iceland, Greenland and whaling. Johann Anderson (1674-1743) was a German lawyer, mayor of Hamburg as well as natural and linguist. He was the son of the Hamburg merchant and whaling ship owner Ammon Anderson. Anderson's work was posthumously published in 1746 as "Nachrichten von Island, Grönland und der Strasse Davis". It deals with the living conditions in Iceland and Greenland and was translated into several languages. This is the rare first Dutch edition. It gives detailed descriptions of Iceland and Greenland/Davis Strait, with sections on whaling and a Danish-Dutch-Greenlandic dictionary as appendix. Niels Horrebow (1712-1760) was a Danish author and scientist. In 1749 he went to Iceland and stayed there for three years. He worked for the Academy of Sciences and did mathematical and physical observations. He also explored the local conditions for the institute. Horrebow's work was originally published in 1752 as "Tilforladelige Efterretninger om Island". It provides corrections to Anderson's work and gives detailed descriptions of Iceland, its geography, people and natural history. Very … [Click Below for Full Description]

Quianlong's reign lasted from 1735 to 1796 and this is considered the most prosperous era of Imperial China, characterized by territorial expansion, good administration and the strengthening of Confucian culture, preservation of Manchu heritage and integration of non-Chinese peoples. One of the primary functions of the Board of Rites was that of a Foreign Ministry, in Western terms. A seal similar to this might have been used during the admission of an audience of the British Macartney Embassy to China in 1793. The embassy did not achieve much (the Emperor was simply not interested to give the British more trade concession and access to markets), but George Cawthorn's 1798 Complete View of the Chinese Empire ... Account of Earl Macartney's Embassy is the best Western source on that period and the organisation of the Imperial Court. The Ashmolean Museum in holds a very similar seal with exactly the same measurements.

LOTTER, Tobias Conrad.
Augsburg, Jakobervorstadt, Lotter, [c. 1750]. 12mo (112 x 72 mm). Contemporary Augsburg binding of polished calf, ornamented in gilt (oxidized); double-page allegorical title, double-page frontispiece, both engraved by Tobias Lobeck after Gottfried Eichler, and 30 hand-coloured double-page engraved maps, light wear to both spine ends; light cropping to uper margins, as often the case; otherwise a very good copy of a charming miniature atlas; provenance: late 18th-century ownership inscription Selina Melga on front fly-leaf. Slightly later issue (first, 1747 with 29 maps) of a miniature highlight of Aussburg book production, charmingly bound in the capital of German Rococo. Tobias Lotter was Mattheus Seutter's son-in-law and one of the leading map engravers of the period. Tobias Lobeck was active in Vienna and Southern Germany as engraver of Saints and theatre decorations, as can clearly be seen in the the title and frontispiece, which is not often found in this atlas. The first issue contained 29 maps, as indicated on the title, later issues increased the mumber of maps. The title however, was never changed.

[British?]: np, nd [18th century]. Broadside verse printed on laid paper, 15 x 5 1/8 inches, 10 stanzas. At the head of the broadside is a small woodcut (2 1/2 x 1 7/8 inches) picturing a man and woman in 18th-century dress; below the text is a second small woodcut (1 x 1 1/8 inches) picturing a shoe and other domestic items. The verse is full of the laments of a newly married young woman who is worried she "marry'd a man and he's but half a blade." Some unconventional advice from her mother and an old woman results in the husband's display of his "sufficient and able" self before a jury of old women. Apparently not recorded in OCLC or ESTC. Some shallow chipping at edges, faint old tidelines and scattered foxing, a few typographical errors, including one or two letters printed upside down, but overall an attractive copy.

1750. Uncoloured. 530 x 305 mm. 20 large engraved sea charts, pasted back to back, nineteenth-century half calf. A rare maritime atlas for V.O.C. ships bound for the Far East, published by Johannes van Keulen II, the Dutch East India Company's official map maker and hydrographer during the years 1726-55. This atlas is a fine and rare example to be used on board, including 20 large engraved sea charts, pasted back to back, as typical for on-board use, making them more durable. This atlas also includes the most important celestial chart of the period, the "Stellatum Planisphaerium" of Louis Vlasbloem. The small spheres show the geocentric and heliocentric configurations of the solar system. The expansion of Dutch maritime trade in the Far East provided new astronomical knowledge of the southern hemisphere: twelve new constellations were added to the Ptolemaic canon, making a total of 60. The newly discovered southern constellations include: Pavo, Phoenix, Indus, and others, and Coma Berenices in the north. Celestial navigation was practiced by Chinese and western sailors, and a celestial chart was of the highest importance for navigation. The volume also includes an important and scarce world map, here in its second state with additional privilege. It is on Mercator's projection with only a relatively small number of coastal place names and no interior features or localities at all. After 1682 other general maps were used by Van Keulen, possibly because of the unfamiliarity of Mercator's projection. Shows California as an island and no further coastlines to the north. Include … [Click Below for Full Description]
