[Archconfraternity of Our Lady of Consolation] [Manila printing]
Extremely rare, perhaps the only known copy of this illustrated work printed in Manila, containing a compendium of the miracles worked by the Sacred Correa; the devotion to the Sagrada Correa began when Saint Monica received a black leather belt in a vision from the Blessed Virgin, who assured the widow that she would take under special protection all those who wore it in her honor; Saint Monica in turn passed it on to her son, Saint Augustine. In the 15thcentury two confraternities were founded: Our Lady of the Consolation and the Cincture of St. Augustine, later merged into one. Manila became the seat of this devotion in Asia. Printed on heavy rag paper. Not in Medina, Manila or Manila Adiciones, Retana Adiciones, Pérez-Güemes, Palau, CCPBE, or OCLC.

YOU, Yi
Tokyo,: Suharaya, [1750]. DescriptionThree vols. 8vo, 21 double-page and three full-page woodcut astronomical illustrations and maps, three with volvelles, 68; 40; 45 folding leaves, original wrappers, original block printed title label to each upper cover, new stitching. NotesThe first edition in Japanese of this astronomical and geographical work, the Chinese text most influential in Japan (Sugimoto and Swain). The original Chinese text, the Tien-ching huo-wen, combined ancient Chinese theories with the writings of the natural philosopher Zhu Xi and philosopher Fang Yizhi, and information from Jesuit scholars. The author, You Yi, studied under the prominent scholar Hsiung Ming-yü, a close friend of the Portuguese Jesuit Father Manuel Dias.It was first printed in China in either 1672 or 1675, but no copies remain in China and it is extremely rare. The first edition to be printed in Japan, in 1730, was issued in four volumes of which the first three were in Chinese and the supplementary fourth was in Japanese. This edition, the first to be issued wholly in Japanese, was translated, revised, and added to by Irie Osamu (1699-1773), and published in 1750. The Tien-ching huo-wen was very popular in Japan, where works concerning Western astronomy were often banned for their Christian content during the Tokugawa shogunate: everyone with an interest in astronomy read it (Nakayama). Luckily, it was free from religious overtones, and quickly became a classic in astronomy partly because of the scarcity of such works. (Sugimoto and Swain).Irie reprinted the eight maps from the origin … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Innsbruck Ursulines].
1750. Small folio (242 x 304 mm). Latin ms. in red and black ink on sturdy paper. (2), XIII, 117, (5) pp. (and several blanks). With 12 full-page washed and mounted ink drawings. Ruled throughout, with black and red borders surrounding text and illustrations. Contemp. brown calf, covers and spine elaborately giltstamped. Gilt brocade endpapers. All edges gilt. Illustrated late Baroque book of hours, written in clean and regular characters. Apart from its magnificent binding, the volume boasts a remarkable cycle of mariological illustrations. The washed ink drawings are evidently the work of a trained artist whose workmanship were fully abreast with contemporary style and technique (including the occasional Rocaille touches). Especially the elegant treatment of the figures and the fine execution of landscape and details of clothing and interiors suggest one of the more significant mid-18th century Tyrolean painters; the characteristic faces with their pronounced eye areas are so similar to those known from the work of Joseph Adam Ritter von Mölk (1718-94) and his circle that an attribution appears justified. - The dated ms. ownership at the beginning ("Soc. Stae. Ursulae oenipontani 1751") locates this manuscript with the Ursuline monastery at Innsbruck, for whom it was probably drawn up in the first place. The Baroque décor of the monastery and church, founded in 1691, was entirely destroyed in the 19th century. - The magnificent binding shows a double ornamental border and corner fleurons on the covers. Splendid brocade endpapers with large curved scrollwork, blossoms and … [Click Below for Full Description]

'The most important result of this voyage was that it definitely put an end to the idea that the North West Passage lay through Hudson's Bay.' Giovan Battista PIRANESI (Mogliano Veneto 1720 - Roma 1778)
Acquaforte, bulino, tinta allo zolfo e puntasecca, firmata in lastra in basso a sinistra. [Click Below for Full Description]

COWPER WILLIAM.
apud Nicolaum Muntendam, 1750. In-folio (cm. 52), cc. (70).
