After receiving a fairly good education in his native city, he was sent to Edinburgh University to study medicine, but he took to the stage instead. He first appeared at the Edinburgh Theatre as Oroonoko, but with small success, and consequently joined an inferior strolling company, with which he remained for some years. He finally drifted to London, where Griffin the bookseller employed him on the Morning Post. After Griffin's death had deprived him of this position, he seems to have worked as an obscure literary hack until he began to write for the stage. He was soon employed with some regularity at Covent Garden Theatre. There, on 4 Nov. 1778, The Invasion, or a Trip to Brighthelmstonea moderate farce, according to Genestwas performed, with Lee Lewis in the chief part (Cameleon) on 4 Nov. 1778. It was repeated twenty-four times during the season, and was several times revived. The Liverpool Prize followed at the same theatre on 22 Feb. 1779, with Quick in the chief part. Illumination, or the Glazier's Conspiracy, a prelude, suggested by the illuminations on Admiral Keppel's acquittal, was acted on 12 April 1779 for Lee Lewis's benefit. The Device, or the Deaf Doctor, when first produced on 27 Sept. 1779, met with great opposition, but, revived with alteration as The Deaf Lover, on 2 Feb. 1780, it achieved some success The Siege of Gibraltar, a musical farce (25 April 1780), celebrated Rodney's victory The Humours of an Election, a farce (19 Oct. 1780), satirised electoral corruption Thelyphthora, or more Wives than One, a farce, satirising the work of the name by Martin Madan [q. v.], was produced on 8 March 1781, and was damned the second night Aerostation, or the Templar's Stratagem (29 Oct. 1784), dealt with the rage of the day for balloons Barataria, or Sancho turned Governor (29 March 1785), was adapted from D'Urfey. Meanwhile Pilon deserted Covent Garden for Drury Lane, where he produced, on 18 May 1782, The Fair American, a comic opera, which was not very skilfully plagiarised from the Adventures of Five Hours. Pilon's last piece, a comedy, He would be a Soldier, after being rejected by Colman, was performed at Covent Garden on 18 Nov. 1786, and achieved considerable success. In 1787 Pilon married a Miss Drury of Kingston, Surrey he died at Lambeth on 17 Jan. 1788. His pieces were clever, if of ephemeral interest. Besides the plays mentioned, all of which he published, Pilon issued The Drama, an anonymous poem, 1775, and An Essay on the Character of Hamlet as performed by Mr. Henderson (anonymous), 8vo, London, 1785 ? An edition of G. A. Stevens's Essay on Heads appeared in 1785, with additions by Pilon. (DNB - Dictionary of National Biography - Article by David James O'Donoghue) __________________________________________ John O'Keeffe (June 24, 1747 February 4, 1833) was an Irish actor and dramatist. He wrote a number of farces and amusing dramatic pieces, many of which had great success. Among these are Tony Lumpkin in Town (1778), Wild Oats (1791), Love in a Camp, and Omai (1785), an account of the voyages of the Tahitian explorer Omai. O'Keeffe was born in Dublin in 1747 to Roman Catholic parents and was educated by the Jesuits. After showing a talent for drawing he studied art at an Academy in Dublin, but grew increasingly more interested in the theatre. After a two-year trip to London, where he became an admirer of David Garrick, he settled on a career as an actor and playwright. O'Keeffe wrote his first play The She Gallant when he was twenty, and it was performed in Dublin at the Smock Alley Theatre. In 1774 O'Keeffe was married to Mary Heaphy. In 1777 O'Keefe moved to London. The following year he wrote Tony Lumpkin in Town a sequel to Oliver Goldsmith's She Stoops to Conquer and sent it to the manager of the Haymarket Theatre. The play was successfully produced, and O'Keefe regularly wrote for the Haymarket thereafter. Between 1782 and 1796 O'Keefe wrote around 28 plays and comic operas. The Poor Soldier (1783), a comic opera with words and lyrics by O'Keeffe and music by William Shield, was a musical farce about the lives of British soldiers returning home after the American War of Independence. O'Keeffe also wrote The Son-in-Law, Agreeable Surprise which includes the lyrical poem Amo, Amas, and Castle of Andalusia. O'Keefe had problems with his eyes ever since he had fallen into the River Liffey in his youth. From the mid-1770s O'Keefe increasingly lost his sight, and from 1781 his plays had to be dictated by him. In spite of this he was a prolific writer and was the most produced playwright in London in the last quarter of the 18th century. Some of his songs set to music by Arnold and Shield, such as I am a Friar of Orders Grey, and The Thorn, are still popular. In 1800 a benefit performance was staged for him at Covent Garden. In 1826 O'Keefe wrote his memoirs which covered his life experiences and various interactions with the leading artistic figures of his day. The memoirs were dictated to his daughter Adelaide O'Keefe (1776-1865) who oversaw their publication. The same year he was awarded a pension by George IV. He died in 1833 in Southampton and was buried there. In the 19th century the essayist William Hazlitt described O'Keeffe as the "English Molière" observing "in light, careless laughter and pleasant exaggeration of the humorous, we have no equal to him". His Wild Oats has been revived in 1976, 1995 and 2012, by the Royal Shakespeare Company, the Royal National Theatre and the Bristol Old Vic respectively. (Wikipedia) ______________________________________________ August Friedrich Ferdinand von Kotzebue (3 May [O.S. 22 April] 1761 - 23 March [O.S. 11 March] 1819) was a German dramatist and writer who also worked as a consul in Russia and Germany. One of Kotzebue's books was burned during the Wartburg festival in 1817. He was murdered in 1819 by Karl Ludwig Sand, a militant member of the Burschenschaften. This murder gave Metternich the pretext to issue the Carlsbad Decrees of 1819, which dissolved the Burschenschaften, cracked down on the liberal press, and seriously restricted academic freedom in the states of the German Confederation. To Mr. Joyne "in Lambe Buildinge in the Inner Temple, London": "I heartily condole with you on the unhappy Death of your Brother.         Delphinium

      - Ca. 2nd and 3rd quarters, 18th century. Watercolor with gouache and gold leaf on vellum 7 x 5 ¾ ", Framed: 18 x 15 ½ " The present composition captures with striking vividness a flower from the Delphinium genus of perennial flowering plants found throughout the Northern Hemisphere and on the high mountains of tropical Africa. Various delphiniums are cultivated as ornamental plants, for traditional and native plant gardens. The numerous hybrids and cultivars are primarily used as garden plants, providing height at the back of the summer border, in association with roses, lilies, and geraniums. The lush texture, deep blueness, and overall sheen of Dietzsch’s portrait of this flower gives the impression that the plant is suspended in time; its ephemeral, delicate life immortalized for eternity. The Dietzsches were an important family of painters, engravers, and musicians that flourished in Nuremberg during the eighteenth century. The patronage of Dr. Christoph Trew, the great botanist and bibliographer, made Nuremberg one of the foremost centers of botanical art in the world, and the Dietzsch family was one of the most noted of the era. Barbara Regina Dietzsch is particularly well known for her marvelous renderings of flowers and fruit in watercolor and gouache. Employed at the court of Nuremberg, she painted primarily in watercolor and gouache and produced extensively for engravers there. Her work was of such outstanding quality that it was used by Trew and the great flower painter Georg Ehret for a number of plates in the Hortus Nitidissimis(1750-86). Indeed, even at the time of its production, Dietzsch’s art was much sought after by collectors in both the Netherlands and England, and it is recorded that some of the best known painters of the time even accepted her works as a form of payment, signaling the type of celebrated reputation she was able to attain within her lifetime—a celebration that has only continued to grow ever since. Like most of her family's work, Barbara Regina Dietzsch's watercolors are often characterized by the use of a black or dark brown ground, and it is partly upon the basis of this that the current attribution has been based. Ehret also occasionally placed his bouquets on a dark background, but these are not nearly as successful as Dietzsch's in making the subject come to life. Various examples of her work can be found in the Broughton Collection at the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, England and in each the dark ground is present. What separates the work of Barbara Regina from that of her other family members is the remarkable clarity of depiction and skill in rendering. With unbelievable mastery and stylistic power, Dietzsch overcame contemporary estimations of women's inferiority in the field of art, creating watercolors of distinctive splendor. Catalogued by Xueli Wang, Columbia University, BA; Courtauld Institute of Art, MA. You are warmly invited to visit our gallery at 1016 Madison Avenue in New York City to view this work whenever it might be convenient. It is our intention to have highly competitive prices. The first edition of this his only book, appeared in 1745, in Puebla, and Palau (130384) notes that "esta obra se ha hecho muy rara": there are no listings for it on OCLC or at auction. This second edition was enlarged according to the title page and is a complete history of the shrine, the miraculous apparition, and the many miracles associated with it. Bound in 19th century calf over mottled boards, with tooling on the spine. There is some moderate trimming, but the paper and text is very fresh and clean. A very nice copy.

CHRISTOPHER MAIRE & ROGER BOSCOVICH. DE LITTERARIA EXPEDITIONE PER PONTIFICIAM DITIONEM AD DIMETIENDOS DUOS MERIDIANI GRADUS ET CORRIGENDAM MAPPAM GEOGRAPHICAM IUSSU, ET AUSPICIIS BENEDICTI XIPONT. MAX. SUSCEPTA A PATRIBUS SOCIET. JESU.

      - Format : Quarto (26.5 x 19.5 cm / 10.5 x 7.5 inches): xxii, 516, 2 ff. errata, plus 4 folding plates and 1 map of the Papal States in 3 large separate folding sheets (each approximately 40 x 68 cm, that if joined would form a map approximately 115 x 68 cm / 47 x 25.5 inches); contemporary vellum with title debossed in gilt to headpiece – Collation Complete (Very Good condition internally, some sporadic areas of light toning to text block, very small repaired tear in blank margin of title page; Binding Very Good condition, very slight worming and minor separation to head of spine). This is an especially fine example of the very rare first edition of Roger Boscovich and Christopher Maire’s De Litteraria Expeditione, which provides a critically important piece of evidence supporting the prevailing theory as to the shape of the earth, in addition to featuring the first scientifically accurate general map of the Papal States. At the behest of Pope Benedict XIV, from 1750 to 1753, the esteemed Croatian polymath Roger Boscovich teamed up with the English Jesuit Christopher Maire to measure two degrees of a meridian arc between Rome and Rimini. Through their resulting calculations, they verified that the length of a degree of longitude progressively increases as one moves north from the Equator. During this, at times grueling, endeavour, Boscovich and Maire also acquired trigonometrical measurements that led to the first scientific map of the region. The mission was hailed as a great success, and the present detailed account of their mission, along with their scientific analysis and the magnificent large-format map, was published in Rome in 1755. The present editio princeps is very rare on the market, and we are aware of only a single other example being offered at auction or in dealers’ catalogues during the last 50 years. Historical Background Boscovich and Maire’s endeavour in the Papal States must be viewed within the greater context of the international scientific effort to discern the shape of the earth, entering a debate as to whether it was an oblate spheroid (slightly flattened at the poles) or an elongated spheroid. Sir Isaac Newton had theorized that the earth should be an oblate spheroid, due to the pull of gravitation force. If this was the case, then the length of a degree of longitude surveyed along the same meridian should increase as one moved away from the Equator. However, surveys of the meridian arc in France in the latter 17th Century, conducted by the likes of Jean Picard, Jacques Cassini and Philippe de La Hire, had produced readings that showed that the length of a degree decreased as one measured further north. While the French surveyors’ readings were later proved to be faulty (in their defense, conducting such precise measurements with contemporary equipment was nearly impossible), they were all highly regarded scientists and their findings could not be easily dismissed. While the question of the earth’s shape fascinated intellectuals during the first decades of the 18th Century, for sometime, the matter remained unresolved, as technology had not caught up with scientific curiosity. Valuing their leading role in the study of geodesy, the French Académie des Sciences decided to sponsor two epic expeditions to the extremes of the earth’s latitudes, in an effort to solve the question of the planet’s shape, once and for all. The resulting scientific surveys were aided by recent and profound technological improvements, such as vastly superior theodolites and quadrants, as well as more effective techniques of triangulated surveying. Pierre Bouguer and Charles Marie de La Condamine were sent to measure the length of the meridian arc in the equatorial latitudes in Peru and Ecuador, a horrendously arduous mission that lasted from 1735 to 1744. Pierre-Louis Maupertuis was sent to Lapland, where, from 1736 to 1737, he measured the length of the meridian arc near the Arctic Circle. In 1740, César François Cassini de Thu

        Produzioni Matematiche

      - Engraved vignettes on titles depicting the lemniscate & 16 folding engraved plates. xxiv, 528 pp.; xii, 536 pp. Two vols. Large 4to, mid-19th cent. half-vellum & marbled boards (occasional minor stains), entirely uncut. Pesaro: Stamperia Gavelliana, 1750. First edition of a rare work, containing the important collected writings of Fagnano (1682-1766), Italian nobleman and mathematician. Many of the texts printed here appear for the first time. Fagnano's advances in algebra and geometry were very far-reaching and his work on the rectification of the lemniscate made him, according to Legendre, the true founder of the theory of elliptic functions. This breakthrough was of great importance and was employed in the recent proof of Fermat's last theorem. "In algebra Fagnano suggested new methods for the solution of equations of the second, third and fourth degrees. He also organized in a rational manner the knowledge that scientists had of imaginary numbers, establishing for them a special algorithm that was far better than BombeIli's primitive one? "In geometry Fagnano formulated a general theory of geometric proportions that is more noteworthy than the countless writings, published previously, that were intended to illustrate book V of Euclid's Elements. Much more important, however, is his work on the triangle, for which he may well be considered the founder of the geometry of the triangle? "'The most important results achieved by Fagnano, however, were in analytical geometry and in integral calculus."-D.S.B., IV, pp. 515-16. "In his study of the rectification of the lemniscate, Fagnano introduced ingenious analytic transformations that laid the foundation for the theory of elliptic integrals and his work was to lead to elliptic functions. Fagnano collected many of his published works, and a few unpublished ones, and produced the two volume treatise Produzioni matematiche in 1750. In 1751 Euler was asked to examine Produzioni matematiche and he found in this treatise relations between special types of elliptic integrals, that express the length of an arc of a lemniscate, which were quite unexpected to him. Generalising Fagnano's results, Euler went on to create a general theory of these integrals, in particular giving the famous addition formula for elliptic integrals. Fagnano had proved the duplication formula, a particular case of the addition formula, for the integrals? "In fact Fagnano had proved remarkable properties of the lemniscate, including the fact that its arcs may be divided in equal parts using a ruler and compass construction? "Fagnano made many other major contributions but his mathematical work was not without controversy. He was involved in priority disputes with Nicolaus (I) Bernoulli and, not surprisingly, the big dispute of the day which was between the supporters of Newton and those of Leibniz."-The MacTutor History of Mathematics Archive (on-line).
