        London Punch-House trade card

1750. ASHLEY, James. London Punch-House trade card. London: Thomas Worlidge, circa 1750. Card measures 6 by 7-1/2 inches, engraved on recto only. $8500.Rare original 18th-century trade card of James Ashley, credited with creating the drink that would become the modern cocktail at the Punch-House in London in the 18th-century, fully engraved with a portrait of Ashley flanked by the Punch-House's iconic iron punch bowls.Drink historian David Wondrich has called Ashley ""the world's first celebrity mixologist, the first man to become famous for compounding and selling a mixed drink"" (Wondrich, Punch, 171). This original engraved trade card features a portrait of Ashley flanked by the elaborate pedestals topped by iron punch bowls that stood outside the front door of his London Punch-House, with the caption ""James Ashley / Who at the London Punch House on Ludgate Hill 1731 / First Reduced the Price of PUNCH & rais'd its Reputation."" Perhaps just as important as lowering the price was Ashley's innovation of serving smaller, individual servings, made to order for each customer—the precursor of the modern cocktail. Extensively advertised and promoted by Ashley, the London Punch-House enjoyed clientele such as William Hogarth, James Boswell, Oliver Goldsmith and Benjamin Franklin. This trade card is engraved by Ashley's friend Thomas Worlidge (dubbed ""The English Rembrandt""), who also engraved portraits of Ashley's wife and one Mrs. Graywood, the bar-keep at the Punch-House. Only slightest wear and discoloration, impression strong and vivid. Rare.

[AUTOGRAPH LETTER, SIGNED BY ANTOINE LOUIS ROUILLÉ, PRESENTING A LETTER OF INTRODUCTION FOR SWEDISH BOTANIST PETER KALM TO CARL FREDRIK SCHEFFER, SWEDISH DIPLOMAT]

Versailles, 1750. [1]p. Remargined with archival paper, repairing two small closed tears at right edge. Lower left corner of original letter sheet lacking, small section of upper left corn town away, neither affecting text. Composed in a neat hand. Good plus. An interesting letter relating to the explorations in colonial America conducted by Peter Kalm, Swedish botanist and naturalist, in the mid-18th century. Kalm travelled in the British colonies and French Canada from 1748 to 1751. Streeter calls Kalm's writing on his experiences, first published in Stockholm in three volumes between 1753 and 1761, "One of the most reliable 18th-century accounts of American natural history, social organization, and political situation." The Swede spent most of 1748 and 1749 in the British colonies, before heading north to Québec, then returning to Sweden in February 1751. This letter, written by French diplomat Antoine Louis Rouillé in April 1750 to a Swedish counterpart in Paris, Carl Fredrik Scheffer, encloses a letter of introduction (not present) promising Kalm "toutes les facilités qu'il pourra raisonnablement desirer," intended to resemble another letter sent directly to Canada on his behalf. The letters apparently had their intended effect, as Kalm was much taken with life in Canada and his treatment by the French colonial government: "His diary shows that his impression of Canadians was much higher than his book suggests. In his published account he speaks glowingly of their personal qualities. He praises the politeness and cheerfulness he found at all levels of society and contrasts the industrious women with the colonial Englishwomen 'who have indeed taken the liberty of throwing all the burden of housekeeping upon their husbands.' In his manuscripts he is even more favourable, comparing Canada with the British colonies as heaven compares with earth, white with black. No doubt part of this feeling stemmed from the royal treatment he had received in New France, thanks to the intervention of the Swedish minister to Paris" - DCB. A letter that provides interesting background on the travels of an important writer on colonial America.         Il carro di Pulcinella o Pulcinella felice

1750. Acquaforte, 1750 circa, firmata in basso a destra 'Joan. Aug. Etching, 1750 circa, signed on platea t lower right 'Joan. Aug. Ratti Pictor Sanueasis inv. et fec.' Good example, printed on contemporary laid paper, below small spot in the white border, otherwise in good condition. A very rare etching by the famous Italian painter Giovanni Augusto Ratti is a pair with another sheet showing Pulcinella, sad, who leaves the house with his family. The theme of Pulcinella was represented by Ratti not only in these two recordings but also, as a ceramist, on majolica. Giovanni Agostino Ratti, from Savona, came early to Rome, where he studied for several years in the studio of Benedetto Luti. Most of his 22 well-known etchings originated mainly in Rome, but the motifs of the Pulcinella did not arise until after his return to the homeland, where he pursued various orders between Savona and Genoa until his death.         Jo. Baptistae Morgagni In A. Corn. Celsum, et Q. Ser. Samonicum epistolae decem. Quarum sex nunc primnm prodeunt.

. Naar het Engelsch. Met platen en kaarten.Amsterdam, Johannes Allart, 1806. 2 volumes. 8vo. With engraved frontispiece, 8 numbered engraved plates and 5 unnumbered folding engraved plates, the folding plates for a map of Haiti (20.5 x 44 cm), a plan of "Kaap François" (Cap-Haïtien), and a facsimile of a 3-page letter from Toussaint l'Ouverture to Edward Tyrell Smith. Contemporary stiffened sprinkled paper wrappers.

      - Muller, America 531; Saakes 4, p. 268 and 306; Sabin 67535. First Dutch edition of an important and partly eye-witness account of Haiti and its struggle for freedom from French rule. Marcus Rainsford (ca. 1750-1805) served for many years as a soldier with the British Army in the British West Indies. He visited Haiti in 1799, where he became an admirer of Toussaint l'Ouverture, the black former slave who led Haiti's revolution, struggled to end slavery and fought with great valour and military acumen to establish an independent republic. Toussaint l'Ouverture played a key role in what proved the first successful attempt by a slave population in the Americas (or elsewhere) to throw off the yoke of European colonialism. He defeated armies of three imperial powers, but died in French custody a year before the 1804 independence made Haiti the second independent republic in the Americas (after the United States of America but before Venezuela and Colombia). With armorial bookplate. A small tear in the folding plan of Cap-Haïtien and in the sea in the map of Haiti, but still in very good condition, unpressed and wholly untrimmed. Wrappers slightly rubbed and spines slightly frayed. A detailed, well illustrated and sympathetic account of the Haitian slave revolt: an essential source for any study of slavery in the Americas.

        Traité des Pierres graveés

1750. Finely engraved title-pages, engraved dedication leaf to Louis XV, engraved head- & tail-pieces, & many engravings in the text. Vol. I: two engraved plates & Vol. II: 63 engraved plates. 5 p.l., 468, [2] pp.; 2 p.l., xii, [4], 132 (i.e. 135 leaves incl. 47*, 86*, & 107*); 2 leaves. Two vols. Folio, cont. red morocco, triple gilt fillet round sides, spines richly gilt, a.e.g. Paris: 1750. First edition and a magnificent large set bound in contemporary red morocco; this is a presentation copy from Baron Holbach, inscribed on the free front-endpaper: "This Book I receiv'd from the Baron D'Holbach. Paris - October - 1763." "This is the earliest analytical work on engraved gems and one that fully retains value even today. However, the two volumes are actually two distinct works combined together for the author's convenience as publisher as well as writer. The first volume is by far the most important because of its authoritative summary of the knowledge of engraved gems and that enormously increased in value by its lengthy discourses on previous works published on engraved gems, with a large, nearly exhaustive list of same… "The first volume begins with a history of engraved gems in general, followed by an essay on modern gem engravers and their work, and a large description of the art of engraving, divided into 4 chapters: I. descriptions of gemstones and other stones used in engraved gems, pp. 153-94, i.e., diamond (including its faceted forms with text & a fig of same), ruby, glass, zircon, garnet, emerald, beryl, peridot, chrysolite, topaz, sapphire, amethyst, other quartz varieties, opal, turquoise, malachite, jade, lapis, coral, amber, and ivory. The authorities cited here are mostly Pliny, De Berquen, and De Boodt. II. Lapidary processes, tools, equipment, etc, required to engrave gems and with the famous engraved plate showing an engraver in his atelier, and beneath, diagrams of the engraving head, accessories, and points. III. Falsifications, and IV. Making impressions. The last portion of the first volume, p. 239 to the end, comments on previous writers and engravers of plates for illustrative purposes, as well as the bibliography…"In contrast, the second volume is entirely devoted to descriptions of engraved gems in the cabinet of Louis XV(1710-1774), King of France, and it is this volume that aroused the keenest interest on the part of C. W. King, Antique Gems and Rings, I, 1872, pp. 465-6, who lauds the first volume but criticizes the second, noting that 'the large number of engravings, by Bouchardon [1698-1762], after gems in the royal cabinet, are, however, in too loose and flowing style to give any accurate idea of their originals.' The drawings of the gems were supervised by Comte de Caylus(1692-1765), the noted French art connoisseur and antiquarian."-Sinkankas 4208. The above-mentioned bibliography (pp. 239-468) in Vol. I is an extremely comprehensive and valuable guide (see Peignot, p. 249). Holbach (1723-89), a nobleman of immense wealth and with considerable learning, was the host of a brilliant salon in Paris for many years and a prolific contributor to the Encyclopédie. This richly illustrated work, which contains more than 200 engravings, is in very fine condition. Engraved armorial bookplate of Kirknvall.

"The greatest scientific and philosophical work of the Middle Ages ... He stated as the fundamental principle that the study of natural sciences must rest solely on experiment; and in the fourth part he explained in detail how astronomy and physical sciences rest ultimately on mathematics, and progress only when their fundamental principles are expressed in a mathematical form. Mathematics, he say, should be regarded as the alphabet of all philosophy" (Sotheran). Written in the 13th-century, this encyclopaedic work contains the results of Bacon's researches, and stands as one of the most important scientific and philosophical works of the Middle Ages. "Bacon wrote on optics, stating the laws of reflection and, in a general way, of refraction and the rainbow. He also described magnifiying glasses and a vacuum-globe balloon. He wrote on chemistry and advocated use of chemistry in medicine; he described gun-powder. He stressed the importance of experiment as the fundamental principle in the study of nature and the use of mathematics in explaining astronomy and physics" (Dibner). Near Fine.

In-8. [192 x 127 mm] Collation : 348 (chiffrées 346), 1 f. blanc, 215 pp. Maroquin olive, triple filets d'encadrement sur les plats, dos à nerfs orné, tranches dorées. (Reliure de l'époque.).
