Geneva. Chez Barrillot et Fils. 1750. Bound in full period calfskin. Gilt ruled spine compartments with gilt tooled fleural motifs. Raised bands. Gilt titles. Marbled endsheets. 12mo. ( 6.5" x 4.0" ) Nouvelle Edition. Illustrated with the scarce folding map of the world - Carte pour Intelligence... One of the most remarkable works of the 18th century. First published in Geneva in 1748, De 'Esprit des Loix ( The spirit of Law ) consists of six main sections, the first dealing with law in general and different forms of government, and the second with the means of government, military matters, taxtion and so on. The third deals with national character and the effect on it of climate. The fourth and fifth deal with economic matters and religion; the last is an appendix on law- Roman, feudal and modern French. The scheme that emerges of a liberal benevolent monarchy limited by safegards on individual iberty was to prove immensely influential. Montesquieu's theories ( as set forth in this work ) underlay the thinking which led up to the American and French revolutions, and the United States Constitution in particular is a lasting tribute to the principles he advocated. - Printing and the Mind of Man 197. Covers rubbed. Most corners worn through. Hinges a bit tender but firm. Head and tailpieces chipped with several small portions lacking. Mild occassional foxing and offset. Minor half inch tear to map along horizontal fold at gutter. A Very Good, crisp and remarkably well preserved early printing. Featured History.

      - Bibliogr. générale de la messure du temps, pp. 106-107 (ads 1 & 2); Berlin Kat. 1750 (ad 2), cf. 1749 (1720 issue of ad 1); Houzeau-Lancaster 11576 (ad 2), cf. 11579 (1711 & 1720 issues of ad 1); Zinner, p. 319 (ads 1 & 2). First edition, first issue, of an important handbook for making and using sundials, by Johannes Gaupp in Lindau. The 1711 and 1720 issues are less rare. The history, use and fabrication of sundials is very accurately and extensively described, profusely illustrated with many detailed and expertly engraved plates. The last two pages of the first work contain addenda and corrigenda. Although Zinner calls for the present 40 numbered plates and 9 unnumbered plates, the latter do not usually appear in the 1708 issue and were probably added to some copies later. With library stamps. Some insignificant foxing and spotting. In good condition, with the title-page of the second work very slightly shaved (with the loss of one hyphen). The vellum of the spine is torn and repaired, but the binding is also generally good. [Attributes: First Edition]

An original theory or new hypothesis of the universe, founded upon the laws of nature, and solving by mathematical principles the general phaenomena of the visible creation; and particularly the Via Lactea

London: printed for the author, and sold by H. Chapelle, 1750. First edition, 4to, pp. viii, [4], 84; title page printed in red and black, 32 engraved plates (2 folding, 8 rather spectacular ones in mezzotint), wood-engraved initials, head- and tailpieces, with the errata- and list of subscribers leaves, without the final blank; recent full speckled calf by Phil Dusel, double gilt-rule on covers, gilt-decorated spine in 7 compartments, red morocco label in 1, gilt edges; quarter tan calf clamshell box. A very nice, large copy measuring 11 3/8" x 9". The list of subscribers consists of a mere 113 names, so the edition was likely a small one and the book is consequently rare. A beautifully illustrated book, and one of considerable importance in the history of science. Wright first explained the Milky Way and the nebulae as external galaxies and provided the basis for the theories on the universe by Kant, Herschel and Laplace. Wright, a teacher of navigation and a land surveyor by profession, "hypothesized a 'divine center' of the universe, corresponding to a gravitational center around which the sun and other stars orbited. He also proposed, as a possible explanation for the visual phenomenon of the Milky Way, a model of the universe in which the orbiting stars formed a flattened ring. This hypothesis caused Immanuel Kant, who did not realize that Wright's 'center' was supernatural, to credit Wright with originating a disk-shaped model of the galaxy" (Norman).         Traité des Pierres graveés

Finely engraved title-pages, engraved dedication leaf to Louis XV, engraved head- & tail-pieces, & many engravings in the text. Vol. I: two engraved plates & Vol. II: 63 engraved plates. 5 p.l., 468, [2] pp.; 2 p.l., xii, [4], 132 (i.e. 135 leaves incl. 47*, 86*, & 107*); 2 leaves. Two vols. Folio, cont. red morocco, triple gilt fillet round sides, spines richly gilt, a.e.g. Paris: 1750. First edition and a magnificent large set bound in contemporary red morocco; this is a presentation copy from Baron Holbach, inscribed on the free front-endpaper: "This Book I receiv'd from the Baron D'Holbach. Paris - October - 1763." "This is the earliest analytical work on engraved gems and one that fully retains value even today. However, the two volumes are actually two distinct works combined together for the author's convenience as publisher as well as writer. The first volume is by far the most important because of its authoritative summary of the knowledge of engraved gems and that enormously increased in value by its lengthy discourses on previous works published on engraved gems, with a large, nearly exhaustive list of same… "The first volume begins with a history of engraved gems in general, followed by an essay on modern gem engravers and their work, and a large description of the art of engraving, divided into 4 chapters: I. descriptions of gemstones and other stones used in engraved gems, pp. 153-94, i.e., diamond (including its faceted forms with text & a fig of same), ruby, glass, zircon, garnet, emerald, beryl, peridot, chrysolite, topaz, sapphire, amethyst, other quartz varieties, opal, turquoise, malachite, jade, lapis, coral, amber, and ivory. The authorities cited here are mostly Pliny, De Berquen, and De Boodt. II. Lapidary processes, tools, equipment, etc, required to engrave gems and with the famous engraved plate showing an engraver in his atelier, and beneath, diagrams of the engraving head, accessories, and points. III. Falsifications, and IV. Making impressions. The last portion of the first volume, p. 239 to the end, comments on previous writers and engravers of plates for illustrative purposes, as well as the bibliography… "In contrast, the second volume is entirely devoted to descriptions of engraved gems in the cabinet of Louis XV(1710-1774), King of France, and it is this volume that aroused the keenest interest on the part of C. W. King, Antique Gems and Rings, I, 1872, pp. 465-6, who lauds the first volume but criticizes the second, noting that 'the large number of engravings, by Bouchardon [1698-1762], after gems in the royal cabinet, are, however, in too loose and flowing style to give any accurate idea of their originals.' The drawings of the gems were supervised by Comte de Caylus(1692-1765), the noted French art connoisseur and antiquarian."-Sinkankas 4208. The above-mentioned bibliography (pp. 239-468) in Vol. I is an extremely comprehensive and valuable guide (see Peignot, p. 249). Holbach (1723-89), a nobleman of immense wealth and with considerable learning, was the host of a brilliant salon in Paris for many years and a prolific contributor to the Encyclopédie. This richly illustrated work, which contains more than 200 engravings, is in very fine condition. Engraved armorial bookplate of Kirknvall.

        The Spirit of Laws.

London: for J. Nourse, and P. Vaillant,, 1750. Translated from the French … With Corrections and Additions communicated by the Author. 2 volumes, octavo (198 x 122 mm). Rebound to style in brown quarter calf, red and green calf labels to spine, compartments ruled and decorated in gilt, marbled paper boards, decorative rule to boards in blind. Contents evenly toned and some minor foxing, a very good copy. First English edition. One of the central texts in the history of 18th-century thought, L'Esprit des Loix was a huge influence both on English law, especially as mediated by William Blackstone, and on those who framed the American Constitution. Blackstone's Commentaries, Hamilton's Federalist Papers and Tocqueville's Democracy in America are all thoroughly imbued with Montesquieu's theories. In particular, Montesquieu is credited with the idea that the powers of government should be separated and balanced in order to guarantee the freedom of the individual, a key concept in the creation of the US Constitution. No English language edition was published in America until 1802. The translation is by the prolific Irish-born author and skilful translator of works mostly from the French Thomas Nugent (c.1700–1772).

Illustrated manuscript scroll "Haseo Soshi Emaki" [trans.: "Narrative Picture Scroll of Haseo Soshi"], complete, emakimono, manuscript on paper, five paintings in color, five manuscript texts, top & bottom edges of scroll in gold, 38 x 1127 cm., brocade endpapers, in a fitted wooden box

No colophon: n.d. [ca. 1750]. An illustrated scroll of great quality of the famous story about Ki no Haseo (845-912), a courtier in the Early Heian Period. Written ca. 13th century, the oldest surviving scroll of this story - ca. 14th century, the Kamakura era - was preserved by the Hosokawa Family, formerly the ruler of the Kumamoto Fiefdom (today the Kumamoto Prefecture). The scroll rests now as an "Important Cultural Property" at the Eisei Bunko Museum in Tokyo. There are other scrolls of this celebrated story, some of which are incomplete or condensed versions, including those at the National Institute of Japanese Literature (Tokyo), the National Diet Library, Kyoto University, the Imperial Household Agency Library, Tokyo National Museum, and the Kyoto Prefectural Library. Our scroll illustrates the five scenes of this story:"1. One evening when Haseo was about to go to the Imperial Palace, he was visited by a stranger with shrewd eyes, who challenged him with a sugoroku (backgammon) game, saying that there was no other who could rival him in the game. Suspicious but tempted by curiosity, Haseo went out with the stranger, who took him to the Imperial gatehouse, Suzaku-mon. 2. The stranger helped Haseo up to the upper story of the gatehouse. Before beginning the game, he offered a 'girl of unearthly beauty' on bet, whereupon Haseo offered his entire property. As the game turned hopeless for the stranger, he betrayed himself as an awesome goblin, but Haseo at last won the game.3. Deep in the night of the promised day, the man brought to Haseo a beautiful young lady, telling him never to touch her within one hundred days. 4. Eighty days passed. Unable to resist the ever increasing charm of the girl, Haseo embraced her, whereupon she became water and flowed away. He repented, only in vain.5. About three months later, Haseo was going home in the night from the Imperial Palace, when the stranger came to his vehicle and blamed him for breaking the promise. Haseo barely escaped danger by his prayers to the god of Kitano Tenjin. The stranger was a goblin inhabiting the Suzaku Gate, who had created the girl by assembling beautiful parts of dead women. If she had been left untouched for one hundred days, she would have become a real human being."-Tanaka, Ichimatsu, Nihon emakimono zenshu. Japanese Scroll Paintings, Vol. 18, p. 3. "Pictorial representation of literary materials is one of the most important aspects of Japanese art, for in Japan, pictorial images have always been viewed as an indispensable means of communication. Emaki, the art of narrative painting in handscrolls, reached its peak from the twelfth to the fourteenth century, yet the large number of exciting and beautiful examples from later periods are ample testimony that this art never lost its creative energy, or patronage."-Murase, Miyeko, from the "Introduction" of Tales of Japan. Scrolls and Prints from The New York Public Library (1986). The production of luxury scrolls such as ours employed the finest illustrators and artists of the period. Provenance: stamp of the "Kuyo Bunko" library of the Waseda University scholar Koichi Nakano, a specialist in early Japanese literature. In fine condition. There are several small defects. The first text has two carefully repaired holes, slightly touching three characters. The first painting has two small holes carefully repaired. Hase's sword in the first painting has oxidized. The second text has a little dampstaining and defect touching one character. The fourth painting has a small defect well repaired. The example at the National Institute of Japanese Literature is closely related to our scroll. ❧ Komatsu, Shigemi, Nihon emaki taisei (1977), Vol. 11, pp. 74-89. Komatsu, Shigemi, Nihon no emaki (1994)-a facsimile of the earliest scroll of this story.

___________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________ENGLISH_DESCRIPTION______________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________ Contemporary full speckled sheep. 12mo (156x103 mm), (215)-(11 bl.) pages an 7 tables Binding slightly rubbed. . Anonymous astrological manuscript of the eighteenth century, never published. After an introduction in which the author presents the principles of Astrology (planets, houses, zodiacal signs, .), the manuscit is tevoted to the theme of a woman whom the author claims never to have meet. The theme is divided into three parts. The first gives the stars the day of birth (in 1688) of the subject. The second, which the author calls "the root", describes the major influences surrounding this woman's life (life expectancy, temperament, spirit, morals, family, marriage, wealth, happiness, honor, travel, friends, enemies , illness, death). The last part gives predictions years after years - beginning to 8 year-old and ending at the predicted time of his death, at age 79 the 22th of January 1767, with the facts that should happen throughout his life. It's hard to know if this manuscript, is a case study or theme of a real person. It is rare to find such manuscript, a true testimony of astrology as it could be practiced in the eighteenth century.
