        Il pilastro con le colonne

1750 - Acquaforte, bulino, tinta allo zolfo e bruniture, firmata in lastra in basso a destra. Etching, engraving, sulphur tint and burnishing, 1750, signed at lower right. From the Carceri set, plate XVI of the second edition, second issue. Example in the fourth or fifth state of six described by Robison, from the contemporary roman edition (Robison dated to 1770). A magnific impression, printed with black ink on contemporary laid paper with "hammer and anvil in a double encircled fleur de lys with crown and the inscription Fabriano" watermark (Robison 56 dated 1770s), wide margins, usual central fold, otherwise perfect conditions. Fleischmann/ C. de Lannay, 1750-1773. 6 volumes, bound in 3. Folio (410 x 260mm). With 6 handcoloured engraved frontispieces, heightened with gold, and 615 fine handcoloured engraved plates. Contemporary calf, richly gilt ornamented spines in 7 compartments with red gilt lettered label, sides with gilt lines and fleurons at corners (one volume with minor repair to hinges). A very scarce Large Paper copy of the most important and comprehensive early German work on medical plants. We have never before seen and were unable to trace such a large copy, ordinary copies measure 355 x 235mm and are thus considerably smaller. The 'Herbarium Blackwellianum' is an enlarged edition of Elizabeth Blackwell's "A Curious Herbal", a work which she undertook to get her husband out of prison. She succeeded in freeing her husband, although to no avail, he was later beheaded for his part in a political assassination plot./The text, which is both in German and Latin was completely enlarged and revised by C.J Trew, a Nürnberg doctor and celebrated patron of botanical art and artists (the best known of his protégés being Ehret). In this German edition the Linnaean nomenclature is followed and the plates were re-engraved by N.F. Eisenberger, who was 'among the best artists of Nürnberg engaged in the illustration of works on natural history' (Nissen, Herbals, p. 76). He added 115 extra plates and embellished Blackwell's original plates with details of flower parts and fruits. The fine fold-out plates without any foxing. One plate is smaller, but is uncut and bound in at the time the work was bound. Most likely the publisher had run out of stock. This special Large Paper copy has more refined colouring than ordinary copies. A mint copy without any foxing.//Nissen BBI, 169; Great Flower Books 50; Ludwig, H.         La Tomba di Nerone

1750 - Acquaforte, bulino, puntasecca e bruniture, firmata in lastra in basso a sinistra. Etching, engraving, dripoint and scratching, signed at lower left. Frem the set of four called 'Grotteschi'. Example of the third state of six described by Robison. 1ère Edition [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

[caption title]

[Madrid], 1750. First edition. Self wrappers. A very good copy, old wax stain on first leaf, strong impressions, fold strengthened; trimmed at a slant, inked numeral at top margins, tiny stain to top margin of second leaf, manuscript additions.. [4 pp.]. Rare document [embellished in manuscript] ordering the Viceroys of South America to restrict foreigners and mete out heavy fines to offenders. Earlier in the 18th century, Philip V, repeatedly pointed out to his Viceroys and other countries, such as France, that, according to the laws, foreigners could not settle in any place of the Indies, nor open trade nor exercise it, unless they were naturalized or possessed the express authorization of the king. He also censured the Viceroys, Governors and Audiencias because they tolerated circumvention of the law, and ordered them to take care of all the foreigners illegally immigrated and to force them to return to Europe. In the reign of Ferdinand VI, who again sought economic growth in the colonies, the most stringent provisions against foreigners were renewed, as this document notes at its beginning: "after the Conquests of the Indies it has always been one of the most important cares for its government and its conservation the formal prohibition of the passage of aliens to them. And that they dwell in those domains, only as is recognized by the repeated measures which are given to this end to avoid the serious inconveniences which otherwise may be followed and were very much anticipated by the principles, and forced to repeat this important task incessantly." Reference is then made to earlier edicts. A separate document was sent to the Viceroy of New Spain concerning Veracruz (For a full discussion see Richard Konetzke: "Legislacion sobre inmigracion de extranjeros en america," in "Revista Internacional de Sociología, Volume 3 , 1945, pp. 269-300). This copy is accomplished in manuscript in "Buen Retiro" on 1 Febrero 1750. Signed "Yo El Rey... Por mandado del Rey.... Don Joachim Joseph Vazquez y Morales" representing the king. The verso of second leaf is entirely in manuscript signed with two long additions noting the acceptances and dated "En la Ciudad de la Plata en 23 día del mes de Junio de 1751, el Domingo" at the top, and the bottom. Not in Medina BHA, European Americana, JCB, BN Espana, CCILA, OCLC, nor any library databases. A similar decree dated 6 March 1750 is apparently in Ayala: Cedulario, t. 4, fol. 323, num. 276.

Kashirakawari Yakusha Shichihenge (Kabuki actors portraits). Four volumes (of ten). About 1830-40s.

1750 1750 - Four envelope folders (23.6 x 12.8 cm) made of rough paper, each with a printed crest and a name of a Kabuki actor written by hand in Japanese characters. The four actors are: Ichimura Uzaemon XII; Nakamura Utaemon IV; Onoe Kikgorõ IV; and Iwai Shijaku I. On unfolding the envelopes, each contains a multi-coloured wood cut-printed background depicting a Kabuki actor with the name of the Kabuki house written above. The four houses are: Tachibana-ya; Narikoma-ya; Otowa-ya and Yamato-ya. Included are loose pieces of "Katsura tsuke" different hair arrangements or wigs for both women and men. The different wigs symbolize various characters. On each side of the actor small blue labels stating different character names are pasted in. On the rear of the envelopes is written: "Bought at a Kabuki house 1840 by . (name illegible)". We haven't been able to find out how these envelopes were used. Possibly they were published as souvenirs to be bought at the Kabuki house? Seems very rare. Utagwa Kuniyoshi (1798-1861) was one of the last great masters of the Japanese ukiyo-e style of woodblock prints and paintings. He is mainly known for his depictions of the Samurai battles.

A DISCOURSE CONCERNING UNLIMITED SUBMISSION AND NON-RESISTANCE TO THE HIGHER POWERS: With some Reflections on the Resistance made to King Charles I. And on the Anniversary of his Death: In which the Mysterious Doctrine of that Prince's Saintship...

Boston: Printed by D. Fowle and by D. Gookin, 1750. [viii] pages, 55 pages of text; complete with half-title page. Unfortunately this copy has been trimmed by a binder, with some loss to catchwords, some text, and the bottom of the title page. The binding is not present, but the pages remain bound together. The half-title and final few pages of text are lightly foxed, browned, and with a few spots of staining. The final two pages of text have a small spot of adhesive making them stick together; this is in part due to a small circle of loss to the text, which has an old repair using archival tape which stuck to the adjacent page through the hole. Old previous owner's name on the half title page. A very uncommom pamphlet. Sabin 47131 "The writer boldly asserts that resistance to tyranny is obedience to God, as well in Church as in State. He speaks strongly and historically against the Saintship and Martyrdom of Charles, with an irreverant glibness of tongue, akin to the feeling which until recently caused the bells of New Haven in Connecticut to ring a merry peel every year on the 30th of Jan., in honor of the regicides buried there (Stevens)." Title continues "...and Martyrdom is Unriddled: The Substance of which was Delivered in a Sermon preached in the West Meeting-House in Boston the Lord's-Day after the 30th of January, 1749/50. Published at the Request of the Hearers." First edition.. First Edition. Disbound. Very good- condition. Octavo (8vo).

Inventaire des remédes contenus dans la cassette.

(vers 1750). Très bel exemplaire.***** Very well bound manuscript, a companion volume for a crate of bottle of remedies, wrote by a physician, probably Antoine Sidobre, a doctor of Louis XV. In-8. [184 x 110 mm] Collation : (156) pp. Maroquin rouge, dos à nerfs orné, grande dentelle d'encadrement sur les plats, tranches dorées. (Reliure de l'époque.).
