Cfr. Barucci-Carpenter 270; Einaudi 4120; Kress 3862. Ottimo esemplare.

        Sinagogue des Juifs.

Circa 1750 - Copper engraving, mounted. Overall dimensions: 48.5 x 60.5 cm. Image size: 30 x 43.4 cm. Detailed engraved view of the interior of the synagogue from Calmet's renowned work. Antoine Augustin Calmet (1672 – 1757), a French Benedictine monk, was one of the most renowned Bible scholars of his day. He taught philosophy and theology at the abbey at Moyenmoutier and during the early years of his career worked on a massive 23-volume commentary of the Bible, which was first published in Paris between 1707 and 1716. By 1726, due to high demand, two further editions of this work had been published, followed by several editions of Latin translation. Calmet's biblical writings established him as a leading scholar, and he spent many years trying to popularize his work of biblical exegesis in the church. This engraving comes from a copy of a later edition of Calmet's commentary.

EXECTED BY A SHAOLIN ZEN MASTER *** The Shaolin Xi [Monastery/Temple] is a Chán [Zen] Buddhist temple at Song Shan near Zheng Zhou City, Henan Province in Dengfeng, China. It was led by Venerable abbot Shi Yongxìn. founded in the 5th century, the monastery has been famous for centuries its association with Chinese martial arts and particularly with Shaolin Kung Fu. Extracted from Wikipedia. . *** A RARE EDITION: Reprinted and published in Japan by Katsuragawa Hosan in 1750, reproduced from the Chinese original of Kangxi 27 [1679]. The original Chinese edition has been exceptionally obscure and impossible to come by for over the last two-hundred years and is believed now to be lost to posterity. . *** PRINTING TECHNIQUE AND THE PAPER: The work is woodblock printed by hand on hand-made Washi paper, then hand-colored in delicate pastels. . *** CHINESE VIEW OF ANCIENT CHINA: This grand scale work covers a very large space and is quite handsome, suitable for framing and display. The map shows a full view of all of China, from the Great Wall in the North, Shanghai, the East coast, down to the oceans in the South and Hainan Island, and the coasts along he Eastern shores. They were also covert with their powerful political force in China. . *** SHAOLIN SI [TEMPLE/MONASTERY] LEGENDARY CUSTOMS: Priests who passed the highest level of Kung-fu martial art were invited to participate in a recognition ceremony. They were allowed to self-brand themselves by picking up a red-hot iron brazier that had long temple dragon decorations on the sides. The branding was accomplished by clamping the brazier between their forearms until the dragon image was branded on them. These brazier dragons are identical to the long dragon found at the top of this historic map. * Another ancient practices used was the Jieba. It is an ancient ceremony where nine marks are burned onto the head with sticks of incense. In 2007 the Chinese government partially lifted the 300-year ban of the Jieba, allowing the the mentally and physically prepared to participate in the ancient tradition. Incense or moxa was used on top of the shaved head and burned in a ceremony of dedication to the Shaolin Si [temple/monastery] by the most skilled of martial artists. * WHY THE DRAGON SYMBOL WAS USED BY SHAOLIN MONKS: The top of the map show the dragon as a symbol of the Shaolin Si.       [Madrid], 1750. Broadside, 17 x 12 1/4 inches. Old folds. Later pencil annotations. Slight instances of soiling. Text very clean, unaccomplished with spaces left blank. A very good copy. A papal bull originally issued by Pope Urban VIII (1623- 1644), here printed as an indulgence for all faithful Christians in the provinces of Peru and Tierra Firme who had fought or otherwise been involved in battles against infidels (presumably meaning hostile Native Americans). The detailed text concludes with the form of absolution, and is illustrated with five simple woodcuts, including images of St. Peter and St. Paul, the holy cross, the seal of the Comisario General De la Santa Cruzada, and the facsimile signature of the Bishop. The spaces, such as those the date the indulgence was to be submitted and the amount of the indulgence, are here left unaccomplished. A rare mid-18th-century Spanish ephemeral religious printing with New World references. Not in OCLC.

Monsr. Le Brun's Expressions of the Passions of the Soul.

      I. Tinny, London., N.D. circa 1750. First U.K. edition. Folio. 21 pages printed on rectos only. Title-page engraved cartouche, 19 plates engraved by John Tinny. Original plain grey wrappers. Described by Louis XIV as "the greatest French artist of all time", Le Brun's posthumously published treatise, Méthode pour apprendre à dessiner les passions (1698) in which he promoted the expression of the emotions in painting, had immense influence on art theory for the next two centuries. The passions illustrated, with explanatory notes, are: attention, admiration, admiration with astonishment, veneration, rapture, desire, joy with tranquility, laughter, acute pain, simple bodily pain, sadness, weeping, compassion, scorn, horror, terror or fright, anger, hatred or jealousy and despair. ".... Passion is a Motion of the Soul, residing in the sensitive Part, and makes it follow what it thinks good, and fly from what it thinks hurtful. [Le Brun] says also, that what causes any Passion in Soul, causes particular Motions of the Body, the chief of which he describes. Then, he supposes that the Soul receives the Impression of the Passions in the Brain, and feels the Effects of it at the Heart; and that as the Brain is the Part of the Body where the Soul more immediately exercises its Functions, so the Face is that where it more particularly shews what it feels; for this Reason it is called the Mirror of the Soul." Covers stained and partially defective at inside lower corner of top panel and at spine. Title-page stained at lower margin. Edges a little dusty and worn. Good, with the plates in very good indeed state. Very rare. Copac lists only two copies. No copy in the British Library.

        t Stad Huys van Amsteldam.

"(probably by Daumont, Paris) ca. 1750-1800 300 x 450 mm Etching/watercolour t Stad Huys van Amsteldam; L'Hotel de Ville d'Amsterdam; la Casa Configliaria d'Amsterdamo; Das Rath-Hau? zu Amsterdam. pasted on slightly thicker paper. The edges are covered with black paper (for the illumination). Good state.".This beautiful illuminated optical view shows Amsterdam city hall and the square in front of it. The etching is coloured with pastel-like colours for the buildings and more vibrant colours for the people and events on the square. The outlines, windows and light sources of the buildings are perforated (dots and figures). At the back of the print we see that the holes are covered with see-through paper. Some of the holes are coated with green, yellow and red paint. This gives the illusion of coloured lights when the print is held in front of a light source.
