A View of Snowdon, in the Vale of Llan Beriis, in Caernarvon Shire

Published by John Boydell at the Globe near Durham Yard in the Strand, London 1750 - A striking view of Mount Snowdon in Northern Wales, from Boydell's series of plates "Collection of One Hundred Views in England and Wales." Towards the middle of the eighteenth century, a trend developed among English artists and printmakers who sought to record visually the natural beauty of England and Wales. Sparked by a sense of national confidence and patriotism, English printmakers began to publish topographical prints of the important sights in the British Isles. In addition to being a visual record of the countryside, they were meant to encourage public recognition of the beauty and history of England. They were aimed at English and foreign tourists who desired a memento of their travels, or at those armchair travellers who collected topographical prints instead of traveling. John Boydell made a name for himself by joining this nationalistic trend and publishing a long series of topographical engravings. These fine engravings are some of the earliest examples of Boydell's work when he was known more as an engraver than a publisher and print seller. John Boydell is one of the most influential figures in the history of English printmaking. He was not only an accomplished engraver and an industrious publisher, but also a talented print seller who came to dominate the English print trade. He is best known as the originator of the Shakespeare Gallery, which made him one of the most successful print sellers of his time. Le Blanc, Manuel de L'Amateur D'Estampes , p. 504, no. 105; Clayton, The English Print 1688-1802, pp. 115-116 & 155. Engraving with hand-colour. Printed on watermarked laid paper. In excellent condition with the exception of a small tear in the upper margin. Image size: 12 3/8 x 18 1/2 inches.

Franciscum Pitteri, Venice 1750 - 4to (278x191 mm), xl, 367 pp., 2 folding engravings and 1 folding table. Contemporary vellum with lettering piece to spine (spotting, corners bumped, inner hinge starting), some marginal spotting and browning to text. Good, unsophisticated copy. ---- Ebert 1484. Sotheran 5913. Ferchl 18. Wheeler Gift 280. Graesse I, 271: "Infiniment rare." Vgl. Poggendorff I, 85 (EA 1733), Dibner (EA 1733). - SECOND EDITION. "The greatest scientific and philosophical work of the Middle Ages . He stated as the fundamental principle that the study of natural sciences must rest solely on experiment; and in the fourth part he explained in detail how astronomy and physical sciences rest ultimately on mathematics, and progress only when their fundamental principles are expressed in a mathematical form. Mathematics, he say, should be regarded as the alphabet of all philosophy" (Sotheran). Written in the 13th-century, this encyclopaedic work contains the results of Bacon's researches, and stands as one of the most important scientific and philosophical works of the Middle Ages. "Bacon wrote on optics, stating the laws of reflection and, in a general way, of refraction and the rainbow. He also described magnifiying glasses and a vacuum-globe balloon. He wrote on chemistry and advocated use of chemistry in medicine; he described gun-powder. He stressed the importance of experiment as the fundamental principle in the study of nature and the use of mathematics in explaining astronomy and physics" (Dibner). [Attributes: Hard Cover]

The natural history of Barbados. In ten books. By the Reverend Mr. Griffith Hughes, . . . [Large-Paper Issue]

printed for the author; and sold by most booksellers in Great Britain and Ireland, London 1750 - A spectacularly oversized example, with vast margins, of the scarce large-paper issue of perhaps the most important botanical work on Barbados, a book to "place beside Catesby's Natural History" (Hunt), sumptuously produced and beautifully illustrated. Folio: [4], vii, [13], 250, *251-*254, 251-314, [20]pp, complete with 30 full-page copper-engraved plates, many after Georg Dionysius Ehret (1710-1770); folding map of Barbados by Thomas Jeffreys (c.1719-1771), Geographer to King George III; several large engraved headpieces (including 'A Prospect of Bridge-Town in the Island of Barbadoes') and woodcut tailpieces and initials; list of subscribers and a slip containing errata to that list pasted to verso of p.vii (as called for in the Large Paper issue, but without the final errata leaf found in the ordinary paper issue). Rebound to style in three-quarter brown sheep over marbled boards, spine with six raised bands blind-tooled in compartments, original morocco gilt lettering piece laid down. Title page and several preliminary leaves with margins browned and edges expertly strengthened with Japanese tissue. Repaired closed tear to bottom margin of dedication leaf (not affecting text). Offsetting from plates; occasional light foxing or spotting, with somewhat stronger foxing to pp. 4-25 and *251-3 and plates 2 and 3. An excellent copy. Provenance: faded ink stamp of Lehigh University library, dated 1884, with manuscript deaccession note to top of title page (no other library marks anywhere!). Small round former owner's stamp with a monogram 'MB.' References: ESTC Citation No. T147029; Great Flower Books, p.60; Hunt 536; Nissen BBI 950; Sabin 33582; Wood p.393; Calmann Ehret: Flower Painter Extraordinary, p.67. The zoological and botanical plates are each dedicated to a patron or subscriber. Hughes was rector of St. Lucy's parish in Barbados when he observed firsthand or collected reports from the field from "Persons of known Veracity" of every specimen described in his natural history. The work is primarily devoted to the island's botany and dendrology—of its twelve 'books', or chapters (not ten as stated on the title page), eight are dedicated to trees, shrubs, and plants, ordered into chapters according to physical appearance: Nuciferous (nut-bearing), Pomiferous (fruit-bearing), Pruniferous (bearing plum-like fruit), and the like. Hughes provides a physical description of each plant, followed by notes on the edibility of the fruit or nuts and its uses. Also included is a seven-page glossary of "Botanical and Technical Terms," supplied largely by "the accurate Mr. Miller of Chelsea" (presumably Philip Miller, author and foreman of the Chelsea Physic Garden). Among its many original contributions, the book is credited as the first to describe grapefruit and to coin the term 'yellow fever,' although the link to the mosquito came much later. Many of the finely engraved plates, which include depictions of palm trees, bananas, a pineapple, the male and female Pawpaw, some fishes and crustacea, are after drawings by one of the greatest 18th-century botanical painters, G. D. Ehret (Hunt speculates that a number of the unsigned plates may also be by or after Ehret). Each of the 30 plate is dedicated to a different patron and includes an engraved dedication with a coat of arms of the aristocratic or scholarly dedicatee. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Testatine figurate incise in rame. Passano, I, 595. Melzi, II, 329. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

The Smallest Green Red Indian Parakeet and the Little Black, White and Red Indian Creeper

1750 - Samuel Dixon, The Smallest Green and Red Indian Parakeet and the Little Black, White and Red Indian Creeper 1750 series, number III 11” x 8 5/8” During the mid-eighteenth century, Irish artist Samuel Dixon invented and popularized a new painting technique known as basso relievo, most notably used to embellish paintings of natural history subjects, especially birds and flowers. This technique used a copper plate to emboss certain areas of a picture, which was then painted with watercolors and highlighted with gouache. The basso relievo paintings of this era are especially unique because the subject of the painting is three-dimensional. Specific parts of the drawing were molded in relief in order to highlight the subject by making it literally stand out from the paper. Dixon published his first set of twelve basso relievo paintings in 1748. The subject of this first set was flowers derived from Nicholas Roberts’ Variae ac multiformes florum species appressal, published in Paris in 1670. The set was advertised in Faulkner’s Dublin Journal in 1748 to encourage nobles and members of the upper classes to purchase the works, which Dixon believed to be both stylish and practical. Dixon intended his painting to have a dual function. Not only did he want the paintings to be used as decoration, he also believed that they should be used as models to be imitated by amateur embroiderers and needleworkers. In 1750, Dixon produced a second set of basso relievo paintings. This set of twelve focused on foreign birds whose images were derived from George Edwards’ Natural History of Uncommon Birds, published in 1743 and 1751. The work of George Edwards, known as the “Father of British Ornithology,” was also the inspiration for Dixon’s third and final set of basso relievo pictures, Foreign and Domestic Birds, which was devoted to an array of exotic and alluring birds. Interestingly, Dixon did not color his own works. All of the basso relievo pictures were painted by three young artists who lived and worked in Dixon’s home in Dublin. The Dixon paintings are preserved in their original japanned frames, each with a beautiful and lustrously decorated black finish imitating East Asian lacquer. Each of the frames has an inscription on the back, providing the name and a description of the bird. Samuel Dixon undoubtedly brought paintings of birds and flowers into fashion the mid-eighteenth century with these delightful works in the basso relievo style, and other artists imitated his popular technique with much success.

Memoirs concerning Herculaneum, the subterranean city, lately discovered at the foot of Mount Vesuvius . . . 8vo. 4, 68pp. London: Printed for D. Wilson, 1750. 202 x 123 mm. Modern full morocco, gilt-lettered front cover. Minor dampstaining and toning, small spot on title, but very good. </p><p>First Edition in English of d&#146;Arthenay&#146;s Mémoire sur la ville souterraine découverte au pied du Mont Vésuve (1748), and one of the first publications in English on the recently discovered lost city of Herculaneum, the ancient Roman city buried in ash during the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 79 A.D. </p><p>D&#146;Arthenay&#146;s pamphlet is one of the early unauthorized memoirs on the official excavation of Herculaneum, which had begun in 1738 under the patronage of King Charles VII of Naples. The Neapolitan government, anxious to prevent theft and to exploit the site&#146;s prestige value, severely restricted access to the buried city to all but its own hired scholars and prohibited the publication of any unauthorized descriptions, so despite intense international interest in the site only a few scattered reports of the excavation&#146;s findings leaked out over the following decade. The &#147;Secret of Herculaneum&#148; proved to be too big to keep, however, and starting in the late 1740s a number of unauthorized works on Herculaneum began to be published, written both by Neapolitan scholars and by foreigners such as D&#146;Arthenay, a volcanologist and amateur antiquarian who was then serving as secretary to the French ambassador at Naples. </p><p>Fordyce, a Scotsman about whom little else is known (he is sometimes confused with another William Fordyce, a Scottish physician), was inspired to make his translation of d&#146;Arthenay&#146;s work after visiting Herculaneum in 1749 and &#147;examining the Curiosities they had found there.&#148; Fordyce&#146;s Memoir, which also includes Xiphilinus&#146;s and Pliny&#146;s accounts of Vesuvius&#146;s eruption, appears to be just the second work in English on Herculaneum, preceded only by Allan Ramsay&#146;s translations of letters from the Italian painter Camillo Paderni published in the Philosophical Transactions in 1740.         MEMENTO MORI

1750. 1750 - Highly finished preparatory design for a fresco or tapestry connected to the Albani family, whose coat of arms appears under the left-hand arch crowned with a cardinal&#146;s hat. Under the central arch of the drawing, preceded by a palafreniero, four servants in blue and white livery carry a red baldacchino that covers two figures processing on horseback. One is clearly a secular prince, with his garland crown and red cape, while the other figure is a cardinal wearing a black hat and a red robe. It is possible that the cardinal depicted is either Annibale (1682-1751) or Alessandro (1692-1779) Albani, or their nephew Cardinal Giovan Francesco Albani II (1720-1803). Under the right arch of the fictive architecture, two buildings appear. While three commedia dell&#146;arte figures, who are commonly associated with the Venetian carnevale, appear, the carriage in the background contradicts the possibility that the setting for this event is Venice. Below these three arches, a series of nine crests appear. The personification of death reclines with his scythe behind the coat of arms of the Corsini family (blue and yellow diagonal stripes with a white band through the center). The crown, which signified the rank of the family, has been wrenched off. (The Corsini were made dukes by Urban VIII in the seventeenth century and princes by Clement XII in 1730) This act of vandalism fits well within the long history of enmity between the Corsini and Albani families in the papal court. We have been unable to connect the sheet to a specific project at any Albani residence, but future research should consider the Villa Castelbarco Albani in Vaprio d&#146;Adda, northeast of Milan, whose documentation has proved difficult to obtain. * DBI s.v. An Apology for the Life of Mr. Bampfylde-Moore Carew, Commonly call'd the King of the Beggars .

Printed for R. Goadby and W. Owen [1750?], London - Hardcover, 8vo. xx + iv + 240pp. Old calf, neatly rebacked, with gilt stamped title label between raised bands. Contemporary (?) previous owner's name neatly inked on fore-edge, pages somewhat darkened, but still a very nice, clean copy. The full title reads: An Apology for the Life of Mr. Bampfylde-Moore Carew, Commonly call'd the King of the Beggars; Being an impartial account of his life, from his leaving Tiverton School, at the age of Fifteen, and entering into a Society of Gypsies to the present time; wherein the motives of his conduct will be explained, and the great number of characters and shapes he has appeared in through Great Britain, Ireland and Several other places of Europe be related, with his travels twice through great part of America. A particular account of the Original, Government, Language, Laws and Customs of the Gypsies; their method of electing their King, & c. And a parallel drawn after the manner of Plutarch between Mr. Bampfylde-Moore Carew and Mr. Thomas Jones. Bampfylde Moore, King of the gypsies, was born in July 1693, at Bickley, near Tiverton, where his father was the rector. Following some youthful misadventure he fled home and joined a band of gypsies, beginning a long career as a swindler of great ingenuity. He lived a time in Newfoundland, before returning to England where he married, and, on the death of the famed Gypsy leader Clause Patch, was appointed as "king of the gipsies." He was eventually convicted of vagrancy and transported to Maryland, from where he eventually escaped to Pennsylvania. He continued his artful deceits throughout North America, before returning again to England, and thence to Scotland. He supposedly accompanied the Pretender to Carlisle, and continued, as ever, with his extraordinary deceits and rogueries. He is thought to have died in 1770. Authorship of the book is variously attributed to Robert Goadby or Carew's wife. Some copies of the book are said to have had a frontis-piece, in our experience this was only the later editions, and we have not seen one of this vintage with one. A very nice copy. 'Second Edition with Considerable additions.' [Attributes: Hard Cover]

HORTUS NITIDISSIMIS . : Lilio - Narcussus IV; Guernsey-lily (print)

      - Original hand-coloured engraving drawn by Georg Ehret and executed by J. M. Seligmann. Leaf measures 19.9 x 14.2 inches (50.5 x 36 cm). Fine condition. Matted and ready for framing. From Christoph Trew's magnificent HORTUS NITIDISSIMIS OMNEM PER ANNUM SUPERBIENS FLORIBUS published in three volumes over a 36 year period from 1750-1786. Painted in a more opaque gouache to resemble a painting rather than the traditional practice of using translucent water-colours that allowed more of the engraving to show through. Each piece was meant to capture the flower at the peak of it's beauty instead of focusing solely on scientific detail. Ehret contributed 44 of the 180 illustrations in the entire work and is the single most important botanical artist of the era. HORTUS NITIDISSIMUS is considered to be one of the most sumptuous of the florilegia. Being one of the most elusive of the great flower books, the opportunity to own one of these leaves is reserved for only the most discriminating collectors.

Cicognara 2005; UCBA I, 235.
