HORTUS NITIDISSIMIS . : Crocus I; The True Saffron (print)

      - Original hand-coloured engraving drawn by Georg Ehret and executed by J. M. Seligmann. Leaf measures 19.9 x 14.2 inches (50.5 x 36 cm). Fine condition. Some cosmetic retouching in gouache. Matted and ready for framing. From Christoph Trew's magnificent HORTUS NITIDISSIMIS OMNEM PER ANNUM SUPERBIENS FLORIBUS published in three volumes over a 36 year period from 1750-1786. Painted in a more opaque gouache to resemble a painting rather than the traditional practice of using translucent water-colours that allowed more of the engraving to show through. Each piece was meant to capture the flower at the peak of it's beauty instead of focusing solely on scientific detail. Ehret contributed 44 of the 180 illustrations in the entire work and is the single most important botanical artist of the era. HORTUS NITIDISSIMIS is considered to be one of the most sumptuous of the florilegia. Being one of the most elusive of the great flower books, the opportunity to own one of these leaves is reserved for only the most discriminating collectors.

        Abutilon

Nuremberg 1750 - George Dionysius Ehret (1708-1770) is considered the most important and influential botanical artist of the mid-18th century. Born to farmers in Heidelberg, Germany in 1708, Ehret showed an early propensity for drawing, though as a young man he was employed primarily as a gardener. He used his time spent gardening to examine and practice drawing botanicals and the natural world around him. Having attracted the attention of noted botanical artist Johann Weinmann and noted Nuremberg physician Dr. Christoph Jakob Trew, he gained encouragement and financial support for his works. In 1736, Ehret met eminent botanist Carl Linnaeus, who created the first classification system of plants, and moved to England where he remained for the duration of his life. As a result of the arrival of new plant species to England and around Europe, Ehret was in position to draw and document them, further developing his skills. As instructor to the highest of English nobility, he engaged in his publication of Plantae Selectae with financial patronage and text from Dr. Trew. Plantae Selectae was published in Nuremberg in 1750-1773. Various scholars of the time praised the folio highly, singling out the excellent quality of Ehret’s botanical studies. These highly detailed engravings are brilliantly hand colored and still retain their vibrancy. This engraving, 20” x 14” is in very good condition with slight color runoff on the plate and small stamp on the plate. Abutilon is a genus of evergreen in the Mallow family, commonly referred to as the Chinese Bell Flower or Chinese Lantern. This engraving shows the large leaves of the flower, carefully colored and shaded, in the foreground, as the brilliant yellow and red flowers bloom above.

XVIII, Firenze, 1860. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Vaugondy, Paris 1750 - Copper-engraved map, with period hand colouring in outline. A fine eighteenth-century map depicting all of North America, by one of France's greatest cartographers: Vaugondy's first large-scale map of North America. This highly attractive map depicts North America during an especially fascinating time in its history, the period immediately before the French and Indian War. The British Thirteen Colonies hug the Atlantic seaboard, while the immense Gallic empire, embracing both New France (Canada) and Louisiana (the Mississippi Basin) occupy the majority of the interior of the continent. This highly detailed map labels numerous native villages and European forts in the interior of the continent. Spanish Mexico reaches all the way north to modern-day Colorado, and Baja California is shown accurately to be a peninsula, and not an island as previously thought. The Pacific Northwest remains entirely enigmatic, labelled as the "Terres Inconnues." The map also depicts the islands of the Caribbean, which are shown to be in the possession of the various European powers. Vaugondy consulted several sources in devising his map including Bellin's excellent rendering of the Great Lakes, and Guillame De L'Isle's and Jean-Baptiste D'Anville's maps of the Mississippi Basin. The composition is graced by an elegant title cartouche featuring a waterfall inhabited by a cayman, and framed by coulisses of palm trees accompanied by native Americans. This map was included as one of the most important maps in Vaugondy's celebrated Atlas Universel. This copy a rare issue, notable for the addition of a named Georgia to the map, with the hachured Florida boundary line amended. Lowery Collection , 399; Pedley, Bel et Utile , 448; Sellers & Van Ee, Maps and Charts of North America and the West Indies 8; Wheat, Mapping the Transmississippi West I, 129.

[Attributes: Hard Cover]

        PLANTAE SELECTAE

Augsburg, 1750-1773. 10 parts, bound as one. FIRST EDITION, one of the greatest eighteenth-century botanical works. Ten engraved titles, heightened in red and gold, 81 (of 100) magnificent hand-colored engraved plates by Johann Jacob Haid and Johann Elias Haid after drawings by Georg Dionysius Ehret, each with the first word of the caption heightened in gold Large folio, (appr 52 by 35 cm), in contemporary boards backed in vellum and with vellum corner-pieces, the spine with brown and green morocco labels lettered in gilt. 81 plates and ten engraved titles. A very bright and finely coloured copy, beautifully preserved, the titles and colouring all richly rendered, the binding well preserved. One of the greatest eighteenth-century botanical works. Christoph Trew, a physician and amateur botanist, had for a number of years been an admirer of Ehret's work. Ehret, a brilliant botanical artist, was born in Heidelberg in 1710 and originally worked as a gardener, practicing drawing in his spare time. His artistic abilities led him to the service of a Regensburg banker named Leskenkohl who had commissioned him to copy plates in van Rheede tot Draakestein, Hortus indicus malabaricus. It was during this period that Trew met Ehret. Ehret, through works such as the PLATAE SELECTAE would become one of the most influential European botanical artists of all time.

Hortus Nitidissimis omnem per annum superbiens floribus Balsamina I- Plate 80

Nuremberg:: Trew, Christoph Jakob and Wirsing, A.L.,, 1750-86.. first. Fine with original hand-coloring. A Fine original hand-colored copperplate engraving. Folio (12.5/8 x 19.25 inches, 32.05 x 48.89 cm). Presented matted in an Ivory rag mat with gilt line decoration. Sized to 18.5 x 24.5 inches, 46.99 x 62.23 cm). One of the rarest, and most elusive, of all botanical works. As stated in Gordon Dunthorne's Flower and Fruit Prints of the Eighteenth and early Nineteenth Centuries, London. 1938: Hortus Nitidissimis is one of the finest records of the cultivated flowers of the period, containing full-sized coloured of the figures. This is the showiest of the Florilegia; garden and florist's flowers painted for their beauty opposed to their scientific appeal. Many of the botanicals were rendered and appropriately credited to Georg Dionysius Ehret (1708-70). Ehret's contribution to the art of botanical illustration is so instrumental, that in his well-referenced and essential tome of the same name, Wilfred Blunt credits Ehret for an entire period of botanical illustration: The Age of Ehret. In Hortus Nitidissimis, Ehret's contributions were honored, unlike the fate that befell him from his involvement with Weinmann's Phytanthoza Iconographia (1737-45). The author of Hortus Nitidissimis was Ehret's friend and colleague Dr. Christoph Jakob Trew (1695-1769), a celebrated Nuremberg doctor, who also rewrote and reissued the botanical work of Elizabeth Blackwell's A Curious Herbal in 1747-1773, illustrated with plates engraved by N. F. Eisenberger.

The texts here all seem to have been collected from these printed sources.

A large and rare map of Asia. Guillaume Danet was the son-in-law and successor of De Fer and republished many of his maps, but this item is apparently a new work, one of series of World and Continents first published 1729-32. Here in its second state with new adress and year. The engraved border is filled with coats of arms interspersed with shells.

HORTUS NITIDISSIMIS . : Tulip IV; La Nouvelle (print)

      - Original hand-coloured engraving drawn by "S" and executed by J. M. Painted in a more opaque gouache to resemble a painting rather than the traditional use of water-colours that allowed more of the engraving to show through. Each piece is meant to capture the flower at the peak of it's beauty instead of focusing solely on scientific detail. Several artists from different European nations were involved in this project giving a multi-ethnic flavour to the complete work. HORTUS NITIDISSIMIS is considered to be one of the most sumptuous of the florilegia. Being one of the most elusive of the great flower books, the opportunity to own one of these leaves is reserved for only the most discriminating collectors.
