St. Domingo, of het land der zwarten in Hayti en deszelfs omwenteling. ... Naar het Engelsch. Met platen en kaarten.Amsterdam, Johannes Allart, 1806. 2 volumes. 8vo. With engraved frontispiece, 8 numbered engraved plates and 5 unnumbered folding engraved plates, the folding plates for a map of Haiti (20.5 x 44 cm), a plan of "Kaap François" (Cap-Haïtien), and a facsimile of a 3-page letter from Toussaint l'Ouverture to Edward Tyrell Smith. Contemporary stiffened sprinkled paper wrappers.

Muller, America 531; Saakes 4, p. 268 and 306; Sabin 67535. First Dutch edition of an important and partly eye-witness account of Haiti and its struggle for freedom from French rule. Marcus Rainsford (ca. 1750-1805) served for many years as a soldier with the British Army in the British West Indies. He visited Haiti in 1799, where he became an admirer of Toussaint l'Ouverture, the black former slave who led Haiti's revolution, struggled to end slavery and fought with great valour and military acumen to establish an independent republic. Toussaint l'Ouverture played a key role in what proved the first successful attempt by a slave population in the Americas (or elsewhere) to throw off the yoke of European colonialism. He defeated armies of three imperial powers, but died in French custody a year before the 1804 independence made Haiti the second independent republic in the Americas (after the United States of America but before Venezuela and Colombia). With armorial bookplate. A small tear in the folding plan of Cap-Haïtien and in the sea in the map of Haiti, but still in very good condition, unpressed and wholly untrimmed. Wrappers slightly rubbed and spines slightly frayed. A detailed, well illustrated and sympathetic account of the Haitian slave revolt: an essential source for any study of slavery in the Americas.

HORTUS NITIDISSIMIS . : Fritillaria III; Alexander [and] Fritillaria IV; Asgrauw (print)

      - Original hand-coloured engraving drawn by Georg Ehret and executed by J. M. Seligmann. Leaf measures 19.9 x 14.2 inches (50.5 x 36 cm). Fine condition. Some cosmetic retouching in gouache. Matted and ready for framing. From Christoph Trew's magnificent HORTUS NITIDISSIMIS OMNEM PER ANNUM SUPERBIENS FLORIBUS published in three volumes over a 36 year period from 1750-1786. Painted in a more opaque gouache to resemble a painting rather than the traditional practice of using translucent water-colours that allowed more of the engraving to show through. Each piece was meant to capture the flower at the peak of it's beauty instead of focusing solely on scientific detail. Ehret contributed 44 of the 180 illustrations in the entire work and is the single most important botanical artist of the era. HORTUS NITIDISSIMIS is considered to be one of the most sumptuous of the florilegia. Being one of the most elusive of the great flower books, the opportunity to own one of these leaves is reserved for only the most discriminating collectors.

La Nouvelle Yorck. Ville scitue dans l'Amerique septentrionale das l'isle de Manahatan pres l'embouchure du fleuve hudson...(reversed): Vue de la Nouvelle Yorck

Paris.. No date. Ca. late 1750.. Copperplate engraving, handcolored, image 9 x 15 inches on sheet 11 x 16 inches. Corners trimmed, faint soiling to outer margins and upper left image. Overall very good condition. This is an example of a "vue d'optique" or perspective view, a popular print from the second half of the 18th century, designed to be projected with a viewing device (a zograscope or perspective glass) which enhanced the illusion of depth and perspective, providing something of a 3D effect. Like many prints of this type there is a title printed in mirror image at the top of the print (since the print was reversed when projected), and the coloring is broad. There is a most interesting and thorough article by C.J. Kaldenbach "Perspective Views" which was originally published in Print Quarterly (June 1985) and is now available for viewing on the web. This is a striking view of New York City at the mouth of the Hudson River. .

The History of the Life of Marcus Tullius Cicero. The Fourth Edition.

London: Printed for W. Innys. and R. Manby and H. S. Cox. 1750 - 3 volumes. 8vo, 201 x 121 mms., pp. xl, 423 [424 adverts], [ii], 438; [iv], 380, xl, engraved and printed title-pages in volume 1, contemporary speckled calf, spines gilt in compartments, morocco labels; page 422 misprinted as page 481 in volume, some slight marginal worming in lower margin of first 4 leaves in volume 2 not affecting text, bindings a little dried, spines very slightly faded, but generally a very good and attractive set with the contemporary autograph "W Radcliffe. 1753" on the top margin of the engraved title-page in volume, and on the top margins of the title-pages in volumes 2 and 3 and on the frton paste-down end-paper of each volume Middleton (1683 - 1750) published this work in 1741 in two handsome quarto volumes. It was a great success, and Middleton's earnings increased significantly. This fourth edition was published in the year of Middleton's death and presumably contains some revisions from earlier editions. Although Middleton was accused, to some extent accurately, of plariazing De tribus luminibus Romanorum (1634), by William Bellenden, this book gave him lasting fame. John Dussinger remarks in his ODNB notice that " His biography of Cicero was a benchmark in what has been called 'the rise of modern paganism' (Gay, title-page). Passing through nine editions within the eighteenth century and numerous other editions and reprints in the nineteenth century, it was his most enduring literary achievement. Probably a large part of its appeal derives from its providing an ideal of good citizenship and political independence for aspirants in the British parliamentary system. For instance when in 1790 Nicolas de Azara, the Spanish ambassador in Rome, published a lavishly illustrated Spanish translation it was well received, and in 1804 it was reprinted. The Spain of the Enlightenment needed a model to emulate, and Middleton's Life of Cicero provided the text." [Attributes: Hard Cover]

A physical essay on the senses. Illustrated with copper-plates.

. Translated from the French. - London, Printed for R. Griffiths, at the Dunicad, in St.Paul's Church-yard, 1750, 8°, (4), 288 pp., 14 gefalt. Kupferstichtafeln, feiner Ledereinband im Stil der Zeit.. First English Edition of "Traite des sens" (2nd. Ed. 1744) is "An important work in which Le Cat presents a theory of the propagation of light contrary to that of Newtonian attraction and reports on the pigmented choroid coat of the eye. He assigns the latter to a common embryonic origin with the pigment of the skin."---Albert, Sourcebook, 1346 - The work is illustrated by a set of anatomical plates, including an outstanding folding plate of the base of the brain and of the lacrimal apparatus. Le Cat treats the anatomy and physiology of the sense organs in a philosophical context. - "Le Cat's treatise, part of a work in progress on physiology which never was completed, contains a very interesting view of the brain and nearby vascular, peripheral and autonomic nervous structures. This plate exhibits the base of the brain, but the superior third of the face was preserved intact. The floor of the orbital cavities was removed so that the extraocular muscles and ciliary ganglia were revealed. Most of the cranial nerves are depicted, especially the trigeminal nerve, including the ophthalmic, maxillary and mandibular branches, and its voluminous ganglion. Surprisingly, the discovery of this ganglion is usually attributed to Gasser's pupil Anton Raymund Balthasar Hirsch in his study of the fifth cranial nerve published only twenty-five years later. The superior cervical ganglia and many of their rami (including the internal carotid nerve) roughly compare to the description made by the celebrated Jacques B. Winslow. The main arterial trunks (internal carotid, external carotid, vertebral and basilar arteries) are present, and part of the course of the intracranial segment of the left internal carotid artery was severed so that both oculomotor and abducent nerves could be displayed." Regis Olry, Kaoru Motomiya. Baroque Anatomy Masterpieces as Models for Plastinated Specimens, J Int Soc Plastination Vol 12, No 1:18-22,1997 - - Claude-Nicolas Le Cat "was born on 6th September 1700 at Blerancourt, Oise, France, into a family of physicians. He studied medicine and surgery in Paris, obtained his doctor's degree in 1732 at Reims and settled in Rouen in 1733. He became first surgeon in the Hotel-Dieu in Rouen and professor in anatomy and surgery. In 1736, he received the Royal title of professor and demonstrator. He was founder of the 'Academie royale des sciences, belles-lettres et arts' in Rouen in 1744. Le Cat was famous in his time for his urological surgical skills, and invented several urological instruments, the most noted being a combined gorget and cystotome. He removed a bladder tumour for the first time by means of a forceps introduced along the urethra, described in his 'Pieces concernant l'operation de la taille' in 1749. In 1742, he invented 'a machine for dressing and curing patients, who are very unwieldy and are under the surgeons hands for some ailment on the back, the os sacrum, etc. or are apprehensive of it'. Besides medicine and surgery, Le Cat published, as a true homo universalis, articles on anatomy and physiology, teratology, mathematics, architecture and philosophy. Many articles from his hand, as the one discussed here, were translated from French into English and published in the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London. He died on 20th August, 1768." - "On 15th October 1744, the French surgeon Claude-Nicolas Le Cat (1700-1768) introduced a specially invented canula into the lateral ventricle of a newborn boy with hydrocephalus. The canula was used as a tap and was left in place for 5 days, until the death of the child. This procedure should be seen as the first documented description of a device for repeated ventricular taps in the treatment of hydrocephalus. "E.J.O. Kompanje & E.J. Delwel The First Description of a Device for Repeated External Ventricular Drainage in the Treatment of Congenital Hydrocephalus, Invented in 1744 by Claude-Nicolas Le Cat; Pediatr Neurosurg 2003;39:10-13 - Blake, p. 260. Vorbericht. Th. in vielen Sprachen erschienenen Schriften" Pagel, Hirsch-H. - - "What sort of man was Taylor? He lived in an age when the blind were often decked with asses' ears and peacocks' feathers and exhibited in fairs as objects of amusement, and Taylor probably brought relief to many blind people, whatever his motives and however many his failures. He had studied with a genuine and eminent surgeon. Cheselden, a pupil of William Cowper, was surgeon to St. Thomas's Hospital from 1719 to 1738, and he became Master of the College of Surgeons after the split from the barbers; Pope was a patient of his. Moreover, Taylor had qualifications from several continental universities including Basle, Cologne, and Liege. (I have not been able to discover who-perhaps Taylor himself?.-conferred on him the title of 'Chevalier'). Some of what he wrote (especially on squint) is regarded as sound by modern authorities. He had a conscience and (at least at some times in his career) would not operate if he thought success was unlikely or intervention dangerous. In his early days he advised leaving unilateral cataracts alone since an operation 'may be the occasion of the loss of both the eyes', and was aware of the importance of the pupillary reaction. At times he would use other methods of treatment: he describes his cure, by suggestion, of a nobleman who 'believed himself blind, by a hypochondriac disorder'. - It would be hard to better Coats' summary of Taylor, which ends with these words: In professional matters his knowledge was good; he was a shrewd observer and not without original ideas; but his actual practice was deeply tainted with the dishonest arts of the quack. Many elements go to the formation of the complete charlatan-bombast, effrontery, dishonesty, ignorance. All these qualities Taylor showed in perfection-except ignorance, and this is his chief condemnation. - Of Taylor's life after 1761, when his autobiography appeared, little is known. He died, either in Paris or in a monastery near Prague, in 1772; and according to legend he was blind." David M. Jackson, BACH, HANDEL, AND THE CHEVALIER TAYLOR. Medical History / Volume 12 / Issue 04 / October 1968, pp 385-393 - - "Johann Sebastian Bach's only physical problem seems to have been his vision. Myopia seems most likely, and it is probable that he developed cataracts at an older age. In addition to the cataracts, his worsening vision may have been due in part to some other eye problem. During the last year of his life, Bach's vision became so poor that he decided to have his eyes operated on. Two operations were performed in 1750 by the traveling English eye surgeon John Taylor. Most likely the first operation was Taylor's standard couching procedure. About 1 week after the first operation, Bach had to be operated on again because of a reappearance of the cataract. Many painful and/or vision-reducing complications could have been induced by these intraocular operations: uveitis or endophthalmitis, secondary glaucoma, hemorrhage, retinal detachment, and even sympathetic ophthalmia. Bach was "completely blind" after the operations, and he died less than 4 months after the final operation." Richard H. C. Zegers, The Eyes of Johann Sebastian Bach, Arch Ophthalmol. 2005;123(10): pp.1427-1430.

Shown on the map are all the major land forms and water bodies known at the time. Most of the fictitious physical features, commonly held to exist in the early 18th century, are also indicated.         HORTUS NITIDISSIMIS . : Martagon II; Martagon Virginianum (print)

      - Original hand-coloured engraving drawn by Georg Ehret and executed by J. M. Seligmann. Leaf measures 19.9 x 14.2 inches (50.5 x 36 cm). Fine condition.

From Christoph Trew's magnificent HORTUS NITIDISSIMIS OMNEM PER ANNUM SUPERBIENS FLORIBUS published in three volumes over a 36 year period from 1750-1786. Painted in a more opaque gouache to resemble a painting rather than the traditional use of water-colours that allowed more of the engraving to show through. Each piece is meant to capture the flower at the peak of it's beauty instead of focusing solely on scientific detail. Several artists from different European nations were involved in this project giving a multi-ethnic flavour to the complete work. HORTUS NITIDISSIMIS is considered to be one of the most sumptuous of the florilegia. Being one of the most elusive of the great flower books, the opportunity to own one of these leaves is reserved for only the most discriminating collectors.
