Nova mappa Maris Nigri et Freti Costantino Politani...

1750. Incisione in rame, splendida coloritura originale d'epoca, mm. 500x585.

1750 - A Londres MDCCL. (Germany?), 1750. 8:o. (16),72 pp. Text within a printed frame. Fine contemporary half calf with raised bands, nice black-stamped decor on spine, nicely decorated endpapers, red sprinkled edges. MS numbering label in top compartment. Head of spine slightly chipped. Small stain in outer margin on pp. 3-16, probably caused by candle wax. Occasional minor spotting, for example on pp. 61-64. A nice and charming copy.ESTC T120326: "The imprint is false; possibly printed in Germany". Several editions with somewhat diverging titles, some without imprint, were published the same year. There are several later reprints and a number of translations. Bibliotheca Walleriana 4470 for the first Swedish edition from 1819, translated from C. F. X. Mercier's French adaptation from 1799. The author, the Englishman John Hill (1714-75), had, among other things, received the Swedish Order of Vasa and flaunted a degree in medicine from the University of St. Andrews. He published a number of pamphlets with hilarious content, and, after having failed to become a member of Royal Society, he wrote "Lucina sine concubitu", which can be loosely translated as "Pregancy witout intercourse". In this text, Hill claims that women can become pregnant without engaging in any kind of sexual activity. According to Hill, microscopic "animalcula" were present in the air, which at any time could find their way into a womans body and make her pregnant. These "animalcula" could be studied under microscope and already at this early stage of development they bore the shapes of men or women. Referring to his discovery, Hill thought it possible to rehabilitate the honour of the many women throughout history who had been unable to explain their pregancy.

Cfr. Sapori, 1190; Iccu. Timi_oara is the capital city of Timi_ County, and the main social, economic and cultural centre in western Romania. Timi_oara is the informal capital city of the historical region of Banat. In 1552, a 16,000-strong Ottoman army led by Kara Ahmed Pasha conquered the city and transformed it into a capital city in the region. Timi_oara remained under Ottoman rule for nearly 160 years, controlled directly by the Sultan. During this period, Timi_oara was home to a large Islamic community and produced famous historical figures such as Osman Aga of Temesvar, until Prince Eugene of Savoy conquered it in 1716. Subsequently, the city came under Habsburg rule, and it remained so until the early 20th century, except for the Ottoman occupation between 1788?1789 during the Ottoman-Habsburg war.

A Compleat History of the Piratical States of Barbary, viz. Algiers, Tunis, Tripoli, and Morocco. Containing The Origin, Revolutions, and present State of these Kingdoms, their Forces, Revenues, Policy, and Commerce. Illustrated with a Plan of Algiers, and a Map of Barbary. By a Gentleman who resided there many Years in a public Character.

London: Printed for R. Griffiths, 1750 - Octavo (208 x 125 mm). Contemporary speckled calf, red morocco label to spine, edges sprinkled red. Extremities rubbed, spine ends worn, label a little chipped, front board marked and rear board scuffed, endpapers browned from turn-ins, contents lightly foxed, natural paper flaw to lower corner of leaf D3 and small chip to upper edge of leaf F5, overall a very good copy. 2 engraved folding plates, one a map of the Kingdom of Algiers, the other a landscape showing the city and harbour. Bookplate of the Wolfe family of Forenaughts to front pastedown, ownership inscription of Philpot Wolfe to title page. First edition thus of this English translation of Jacques Philippe Laugier de Tassy's Histoire du royaume d'Alger (1725), originally published in 1728-9 under the title A Complete History of Algiers, here published with additional matter. It is widely held that Joseph Morgan (fl. 1707-1739) is the author of this translation. As vice-consul in Algiers during the early eighteenth century, Morgan "became deeply involved in ransoming his countrymen at the same time that he could observe the dynamics of captive-taking by the North Africans. In his numerous writings about Algiers and the 'piratical states', Morgan gave voice to the Muslim responsa, asking the questions that Algerians (and others) must have raised when Europeans denounced them for piracy . For the first time, an English writer was articulating the colonial ideology that was emerging at the same time that he was denouncing the deeds of early modern Europeans" (Matar, pp. 192-3). This copy is from the library of Philpot Wolfe (1726-1775), a member of the Irish nobility whose family estate, Forenaughts, had been located on the outskirts of Naas, County Kildare since the late 17th century. Wolfe served the county in various posts, including as High Sherriff, Captain of the Militia, Collector of the Revenue, and Sub-Commissioner of Excise. See National Maritime Museum Catalogue, vol. 4, 387; Nabil Matar, British Captives from the Mediterranean to the Atlantic, 1563-1760 (2014). [Attributes: First Edition]

The History of Tom Jones, a Foundling

London: A. Millar, 1750. Fourth edition. xx, 304; viii, 330; x, 288; xii, 347, [1] pp. 12mo. Contemporary mottled calf, gilt, red morocco spine labels. Chipped and worn, front hinges in vols. I & II repaired, small paper repair to margin of vol. II title. Fourth edition. xx, 304; viii, 330; x, 288; xii, 347, [1] pp. 12mo. Sheridan's Tom Jones. Richard Brinsley Sheridan's (1751-1816) copy of the fourth edition of Tom Jones. In 1778 Sheridan and David Garrick brought Fielding's lost play The Fathers: or, the Good-Natur'd Man to Drury Lane for the benefit of Fielding's widow. A manuscript fragment of the play had been found among the papers of Sir Charles Hanbury Williams and identified as Fielding's by Garrick. It ran for nine nights, the house packed with Fielding's friends, and brought his widow Mary much needed relief. As a playwright Sheridan was inheritor of Fielding's wild comic spirit, and his most famous creation, Mrs. Malaprop from The Rivals (1775), is drawn from Fielding's Slipslop, a "mighty Affecter of hard Words" in Joseph Andrews. Sheridan would have undoubtedly read Tom Jones closely and with great interest. Demand for copies of Fielding's masterpiece, arguably the greatest English novel of the 18th century, was so great that all 2,000 copies of the first edition were bought up by the trade before the book's publication on 28 February 1749. A second edition of 1,500 copies, being a paginary reprint of the first, was ordered. There followed a third edition of 3,000 copies, entirely reset and reduced to 4 volumes, and this fourth edition of 3,500 copies, carrying the date 1750 but printed in September and published on 11 December 1749. According to Battestin, this edition "represents [Fielding's] final conception of his masterpiece" (Henry Fielding: A Life, p. 452). It was for years the most readily available edition, as the fifth was not printed until 1763. Cross III, p. 317; Grolier English 48; Rothschild 450. Provenance: Richard Brinsley Sheridan (bookplate in each volume); Louis & Anne Marie Davidson (bookplate)
