A serious proposal for promoting lawful and honourable marriage.

8vo., (2) 74pp., first and last leaves rather dust-soiled, short closed tear in title (no loss), old maroon half morocco over marbled boards, neatly rebacked to match, gilt lines and old label. A good copy. A marvellous, and very early, proposal for a marriage agency in London. The author observes that there are a significant number of young, eligible, unmarried women in the capital who "thro' either choice or necessity, have cultivated so slender, or ill-suited an acquaintance amongst single men, as not to be able, on a fair examination of their own hearts, seriously to approve of any one in their whole circle, that might be inclined to make overtures of marriage". And at the same time the author observes that "there are ..... many single ladies, in and about this great city of London, who, thro' too confined an education, and severe restraint, have not been so properly introduced into the world as they ought; and have, by that means, lost many advantages, in respect of marriage .....". From page 34 the author describes in detail the scheme he has in mind. There were 23 rules of engagement, as it were, which together make up the essentials of how it was all planned to work. In the first place, there were to be "two public offices ..... at two different parts of the city; viz. one near Temple-Bar, and the other near Charing-Cross: this to be called, The Ladies Office; and that, The Gentleman's". (Thus avoiding "as much as possible, all impertinent curiosity, of either sex"). Each office to have a registrar who would attend on each Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday", from 11am to 2pm and from 5pm to 8pm. Records would be kept on the payment of a one guinea registration fee. These records, all duly stamped and recorded, would include a "letter of description" of each client, giving essential details (age, height, complexion, "fortune" or financial status, profession or trade, &c. &c. and pseudonym). The register of clients would be available to view on certain days for one shilling per view. "Rule XII. That if any gentleman, or lady, on looking over their opposite registers, shall approve of any description, and circumstances, as there entered, so as to desire an interview with such person; on sending a letter, directed to the said office as above, and subscribed by his or her second name, or popular name, with the number on the stamp before the date, of such proposal; the same shall be immediately communicated to such lady, or gentleman, and his or her answer thereto, transmitted, as soon as received". There would be a further fee payable when an "interview" was arranged. Strict rules governed such meetings - to take place in "a private house of reputation and credit", to have no locks or bolts on the doors, and to have a guard "constantly on call".Throughout his description of the proposal, the author clearly sees it as imperative that "undiscoverable privacy" and probity of behaviour were both essential. "Rudeness, or indecency of any kind whatsoever" were to be avoided at all costs.

Veduta generale del monastero di Vallombrosa.

      - Firenze, tiratura della fine del XIX secolo. Incisione in rame all’acquaforte, b/n, cm 55 x 143 ca. (alla lastra), stampata su quattro fogli poi uniti. Al margine inf. sin. Ant.

Torah, nevi'im u-khetuvim Biblia hebraica sine punctis Accurante Nath Forster

Oxonii: E Typographeo Clarendoniano 4to (24 cm; 9.5"). 2 vols. in 1. I: [4], 126, [1], 110 ff. II: [1], 116, [1], 142 ff.. 1750 Late as the date may seem for it, this is the first separate edition of the Hebrew Bible printed in England, preceded only by the printing of the text as part of the Walton Polyglot. Editor Nathaniel Forster (1718–57), an accomplished scholar of Greek, Latin, and Hebrew, has included (in the style of the table of contents) "Pentateuchus, Prophetae priores, Prophetae posteriores, Hagiographa"; the leaves following "Prophetae posteriores" are separately signed and printed "Vol. 2." Based on Van der Hoogh's version, the text is in Hebrew, with titles and chapter heads also in Latin. There were two issues of this, a large paper issue and the common paper issue, of which this is one of the latter. Unlike most 18th-century books printed at Oxford, this is scarce. ESTC locates only seven U.S. holding libraries (one of which has deaccessioned its copy) and WorldCat locates three additional library copies (one of which has also been deaccessioned). Of the eight reported copies still actually in libraries four are in the Northeast, two in California, one at Duke, and one in Ohio. Provenance: The Howell Bible Collection, Pacific School of Religion (properly released). Full modern brown morocco plain style, round spine, raised bands, gilt ruling above and below each band . A few sequential lower margins with a spill stain, a bit of foxing and instances of the lightest possible old waterstaining at rear. Two library stamps (one on title, one in a blank area of an interior leaf), as above. => A very clean, crisp copy.

The double leaf measures: 275 x 212 mm. - - - The Persian mystic poet Moulana Noor-od-Din (Nuruddin) Abdorrahman Jami was born in Jam, a small town of Khorasan in 1414 CE. His poetic name is Jami, the word Jam means "wine goblet" in Persian and Nuruddin means "Light of Faith." He was born in a village near Jam, but a few years after his birth, his family migrated to the cultural city of Herat where he spent most of his life. He did travel extensively, most significantly to Samarqand, where he completed his studies. He was a famous Sufi, and a follower of the Naqshbandiyyah Sufi Order. At the end of his life (1492 CE) he was living in Herat. The Baharestan, or Land of Spring, is Jami's best-known work. It is a compendium of fables and short stories, in the tradition of the Golestan of Sa'di.

4to (293 x 235mm). With 306 fine engraved plates. Contemporary calf, richly gilt decorated spines in 6 compartments with red gilt lettered label, gilt edges (very slightly rubbed). An attractive uniformly bound copy of the rare French edition, the first English one was published in 1731-1738. Eleazer Albin is one of the obscure 18th century natural history illustrators, and apart from being a teacher of drawing and watercolour hardly anything is known of him. Besides the above work he published a splendid work on the 'Natural history of Insects' and an attractive work on spiders. The plates of the above offered work were drawn by the author."Albin. was one of the first artists to set each bird on a branch or other suitable perch, sometimes with the typical food of each species as well. The importance of his books . lies in the fact that some of his illustrations and descriptions are the first of those particular species to appear and thus serve as 'type specimens'. Albin did not work alone. He shared the task of drawing, engraving and colouring the plates with his daughter, Elisabeth (c. 1708-41). She has the distinction of being the first woman known to have worked as an illustrator of bird books, signing forty-one of the plates as having been her work alone. Her style, too, was distinctive, softer and more delicate than her father's, and she was evidently more painstaking, painting with lighter, shorter strokes of the brush" (J. Elphick, Birds, the art of ornithology pp. 32-33). There are 2 issues of the work one with the plates coloured and one with plain plates as the present copy.Provenance: Signature of Palisot-Beauvois on title.         [Pineapple. "The Pine Apple. Ananas cosmosus"]

[London], 1750. Copper engraving, coloured by hand, by and after Ehret. Very good condition apart from discreet blindstamp to lower right corner of plate. A very fine image from Griffith Hughes' "The Natural History of Barbados", drawn by the greatest of eighteenth-century botanical artists, George Dionysius Ehret. "If the general, or at least if the judgement of the most numerous part of mankind, who have tasted of this fruit, may be relied upon, it deserves the preference of all other fruits; the agreeable variety, and the delicate quick poignancy of it juice is justly esteemed to excel every other" (Griffith Hughes The Natural History of Barbados, London, 1750, p.226). The book was illustrated with 30 plates (12 of which are signed by Ehret). Hunt praises the work: "This book is one to place beside Catesby's Natural History" and it is often seen as a companion to Sloane's Jamaica. Ehret, a brilliant botanical artist, was unrivalled in his ability to "achieve realism, majesty, ineffable colour, all in one breathtaking look." (Hunt). Born in Heidelberg in 1710, he originally worked as a gardener and practised drawing in his spare time. Ehret moved to London in the late 1730s, where he painted the recently introduced exotics at the Chelsea Physic Garden and established himself as a teacher of flower-painting and botany. Cf. Gerta Calman Georg Ehret, Flower painter Extraordinary (1977) p.67; cf. Great Flower Books (1990) p.104; cf. Hunt 536; cf. Nissen BBI 950; cf. Sabin 33582; cf. Wood p.393.

Magnæ Britanniæ Tabula; Comprehendens Angliæ, Scotiæ, ac Hiberniæ Regna, in omnes suascujusque Provincias peraccuraté et distincté divisa

Amsterdam: Peter Schenck, 1750. Engraved with full, period colour. Mild soiling in margins, several small tears and losses at edges. A handsome map of Great Britain celebrating the ascendancy of William III. A highly detailed map of Great Britain that commemorates in elaborate, Baroque cartouches the Glorious Revolution of 1688 that brought William of Orange to the British throne. Beneath a portrait of William, who is attended by a trumpet blowing cherub and a personification of Roman militancy, is a depiction of Hercules killing the nine-headed hydra next to the coat of arms of Great Britain. On the other side of the map is a jubilant band of cherubs with the crowns and coats of arms of Ireland, Scotland, and England. The map was made by Nicolaes Visscher II of Amsterdam, who was understandably pro-William. Nicolaes died in 1702, and his widow continued publishing the maps until 1726 after which the Schenck family obtained the plate. Koeman, Vis 12.

Pp. (viii), 376, (16). With 12 engraved plates. Contemporary half calf, spine with five raised bands, richly gilt and with title label, somewhat rubbed and top of spine chipped. Copy of Ericsberg castle, Sweden. First edition. Narratives of two Swedish East India Company voyages to China in 1750-52. Pehr Osbeck (1723-1805) served as a preacher on a Swedish East India voyage to Canton. The expedition sailed by way of Spain, the Canary Islands, the Cape of Good Hope and Java. Osbeck's stay in Canton lasted for more than four months before the voyage returned via Java, Sumatra, the Cape and Ascension Island. His account includes detailed and accurate information about plants, fish, insects, birds and other animals along the route but also much information about the people in China and their manners, language, food, religion, agriculture, commerce, etc. A large collection of newly discovered plants in China and Java was brought back and given to Linné. The second work is Torén's narrative of his East India voyage via Surat to China which was published posthumously by Linné. It's a valuable and accurate work mainly devoted to natural history.

In fine è allegata l'opera anonima ''Varietés amusantes et instructives'', Paris, J. Clousier, 1749. Bell'esempl. De Courville n. 652.         The Natural History of Barbados.

London: Printed for the author; and sold by most booksellers in Great Britain and Ireland,, 1750. Folio (340 x 215 mm). Recent half calf, old marbled paper sides, red speckled edges. Folding engraved map by Thomas Jefferys, 30 engraved plates of flora and fauna by Mynde or G. Bickham after G. D. Ehret and others, 10 engraved headpieces (5 views of Bridgetown, each the same, and 5 engraved floral swags), wood-engraved head- and tailpieces and initials. Short closed-tear to map at stub, general foxing and toning, each plate with the name of the specimen depicted noted in a neat contemporary hand (outside the platemark). A good complete copy. First edition of this important and attractive early work on the natural history of Barbados, by the Welsh-born clergyman and naturalist Griffith Hughes (1707-1758?). "In Barbados, Hughes developed the idea of publishing a book on the island's natural history. In 1743 he visited London with the intention of promoting this work and ingratiated himself with the leading scientists of the day, men such as Sir Hans Sloane and Martin Folkes. Before returning home, he had arranged for the leading artist George Dionysius Ehret to prepare plates for his book. Because his plan was both interesting and ambitious, on Hughes's return to England in 1748 he was elected a fellow of the Royal Society as well as receiving his BA and MA degrees from his old college. The Natural History of Barbados, a lavish production in folio... appeared in the spring of 1750" (ODNB). Hughes had also done an impressive job of drumming-up prestigious subscribers: the list is headed by the Prince and Princess of Wales and the Duke of Cumberland. Although at the time the book was criticised for various inaccuracies Hughes did record two notable firsts: the first description of a grapefruit, which he called "the Forbidden Fruit", and the first coining in print of the phrase "yellow fever" (p. 37).
