SALZBURG: VUE DE LA FORTERESSE DE HOHEN-SALZBOURG.

[Salzburg, probably late ]. 1750 - Ink and water-colour in grisaille, on paper, originally mounted on a larger sheet of paper (slightly age-toned and stained, a small worm hole in the image, soft folds, small tears in margins, otherwise in a good condition), 25,5 x 36 cm (10 x 14.2 inches) A drawing shows the Hohensalzburg Castle (Festung Hohensalzburg), one of the landmarks of Salzburg as it looked like in the mid 18th century, after it was last rebuilt in 1681 under Max Gandolf von Kuenburg (1668–1687). The drawing was made by Ferdinand von Attems, a noble family from Gorizia. A signature Le Comte Ferdinand d'Attems de Gorice, page d'honneur du Prince regnant de Saltzbourg (Honorary squire to the Prince of Salzburg) helps dating the view to the mid or late 1750s, when Attems was in his early teens, serving as a squire, probably to Sigismund Graf von Schrattenbach (1698 – 1771), Prince-Archbishop of Salzburg from 1753 to 1771. The function of squires was given to boys from noble families between ages circa 7-14 years. Ferdinand Maria Count von Attems (1746 – 1820), born in Graz, was a son of Ignaz von Attems and Maria Josepha, née Khuen. After successful career in the politics, among other he was a governor of Styria, he dedicated himself to art and collecting. In 1811 he became the first curator of the art museum Joanneum in Graz, and later the sponsor of Drawing Academy and Picture Gallery in Graz, to which he donated circa 160 paintings from his collection. Although educated at a Jesuit school, and preparing for an ecclesiastical career, he eventually converted to Protestantism and from 1687 worked as a civil law notary in Nuremberg. He soon turned to engraving and cartography; in 1702 he founded his own publishing house.Homann acquired renown as a leading German cartographer, and in 1715 was appointed Imperial Geographer by Emperor Charles VI. Giving such privileges to individuals was an added right that the Holy Roman Emperor enjoyed. In the same year he was also named a member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences in Berlin. Of particular significance to cartography were the imperial printing privileges (Latin: privilegia impressoria). These protected for a time the authors in all scientific fields such as printers, copper engravers, map makers and publishers. They were also very important as a recommendation for potential customers. In 1716 Homann published his masterpiece Grosser Atlas ueber die ganze Welt (Grand Atlas of all the World). Numerous maps were drawn up in cooperation with the engraver Christoph Weigel the Elder, who also published Siebmachers Wappenbuch.Homann died in Nuremberg. He was succeeded by the Homann heirs company, which was in business until 1848. The company was known as Homann Erben, Homanniani Heredes, or Heritiers de Homann abroad.

An Essay on Milton's Use and Imitation of the Moderns, in his Paradise Lost.

      J. Payne and J. Bouguet. 1750 [24], 164, [4]pp. Later half calf, marbled boards. A good-plus copy.ESTC T222357, the first issue. Fleeman 49.12LEM/1a. Lauder fraudulently argued that Milton had plagiarised an old Latin poet, one of his 'proofs' being, in fact, a translation from Milton into Latin. With Samuel Johnson's four page preface written for Lauder, and his postscript soliciting donations for the relief of Milton's granddaughter, Elizabeth Foster. When the fraud was exposed, the deceived Johnson extracted a public confession from Lauder. The second issue of the book added a new preface discrediting the author as 'a curiosity of fraud and interpolation'.

Amsterdam, Gerbrand Roos, 1817. 8vo. Modern paper wrappers.

      - Cf. Cat. Van Rijn 1184 (other work on Pinetti); not in NCC; Saalmink; WorldCat. Very rare first edition of the Dutch translation of a description and explanation of 70 conjuring and magic acts performed by the famous Italian magician Jean Joseph Pinetti Willedall de Merci (1750-ca. 1803). The German philosopher and mathematician Johann Wilhelm Andreas Kosmann (1761-1804) based his explanations on Pinetti's own work Amusemens physiques (Paris, 1784), and on Henri Decremps's Magie blanche devoilée (Paris, 1789). All the tricks are described in great detail, they often including the voluntary help of persons chosen from the public, and are subsequently explained by the author. The original German was first published at Berlin in 1799. Kosmann mentioned he had refrained from publishing the book until Pinetti had finished his shows at Berlin. Still, the book raised Pinetti's anger, who took the matter to court, accusing the author of insult. Some minor foxing, some leaves creased, otherwise in good condition, wholly untrimmed.

First french edition. Illustrated with a frontispiece and 15 pretty figures of Gravelot, engraved by Aveline, Chedel, Fessard and Pasquier."Charming illustration of the best time of Gravelot". Cohen. Translation and adaptation by De La Place.Full vintage marbled calfskin. Smooth back decorated with irons with the wheat sheaf in boxes. Title piece in red morocco, and tomaison in morocco morocco. small gaps in the head. Upper joint of volume I and III split. despite the few defects mentioned, beautiful copy, very fresh, very decorative appearance of the back. The History of Tom Jones at Foundling is undoubtedly one of the great masterpieces of English literature. He devotes the English picaresque genre to a brilliant mixture of different genres, that of the novel of manners, that of the sentimental novel and that of a typically English satirical prose found in Swift. Fielding had previously given Joseph Andrews, a sort of satire of the fashionable romance novel, Richardson's Pamela, and Jonathan Wild's Story, and it was already two master shots, he signed with Tom Jones a multiple, profound work, though always in the same vein as Joseph Andrews; his influence will be great in France, and unalterable in England, as far as Thomas Hardy and George Elliot. The echoes of this English style will find great echoes in Dickens. Chez Jean Nourse à Londres 1750 In-12 (10x16,2cm) (4) xj, 336pp. ; (4) 344pp. et (4) 282pp. ; (4) 341pp. 4 volumes reliés

In 1757, Gilles and Didier Robert De Vaugondy published The Atlas Universel, one of the most important atlases of the 18th century. To produce the atlas, the Vaugondys integrated older sources with more modern surveyed maps. They verified and corrected the latitude and longitude of many regional maps in the atlas with astronomical observations. The older material was revised with the addition of many new place names. In 1760, Didier Robert de Vaugondy was appointed geographer to Louis XV.Gilles and Didier Robert De Vaugondy produced their maps and terrestrial globes working together as father and son. Globes of a variety of sizes were made by gluing copperplate-printed gores on a plaster-finished papier-mache core, a complicated and expensive manufacturing process, employing several specialists. In some cases it is uncertain whether Gilles or Didier made a given map. Gilles often signed maps as M.Robert, while Didier commonly signed his maps as "Robert de Vaugondy", or added "fils" or "filio" after his name. The Robert de Vaugondys were descended from the Nicolas Sanson family through Sanson's grandson, Pierre Moulard-Sanson. From him, they inherited much of Sanson's cartographic material, which they combined with maps and plates acquired after Hubert Jaillot's death in 1712 to form the basis the Atlas Universel.

Amsterdam, Gerbrand Roos, 1817. 8vo. Modern paper wrappers.

Cf.

        SONETTI.

Conservazione assai fresca.. DBIt V, pp. 163-166..
