William Shakespeare
London: J Tonson, 1734 Book. Illus. by Du Guernier. Very Good. Full-Leather. First Thus. Fifteen separately printed Shakespeare plays from the 1730s including a full run of the bard's English history plays from King John to Henry VIII and the first ever separate publication of Coriolanus. The plays were bound together with engraved frontispieces shortly after their publication individually in the early 1730s to form three volumes in Tonson's complete edition though each is properly a publication in its own right with assigned ESTC numbers. These volumes are bound in eighteenth century panelled calf - a Cambridge binding - the first volume with a later replacement spine, the second with both boards attached but no backstrip along the spine and the third volume with a darker leather replacement spine. Around the time of the respining to the first and third volumes new endpapers were also bound in. Incomprehensibly the general title page of each volume which the publisher Jacob Tonson dashed-off after the individual plays had been issued reads MDCXXXV - 1635 - rather than the true date of 1735 and each play is preceded by a pretty Du Guernier engraving as frontispiece and its own title page reading 1734. After Twelfth Night and The Winter's Tale in the first volume the histories are bound chronologically with Henry V falling in the second volume and a pair of Roman plays, Coriolanus - in its first ever appearance as a separate play from 1734 - and Titus Andronicus making up the extra space in the final volume. These volumes which date from the moment when Shakespeare was tran … [Click Below for Full Description]

TRIEWALD, Marten
One large & fine folding plate depicting the steam engine at Dannemora (two small & unimportant paper repairs on verso). Title printed in red & black. 4 p.l., 52 pp. Small 4to, early 20th-century marbled sheep (a few minor stains), upper cover lettered in gilt. Stockholm: B.G. Schneider, 1734. First edition and rare. This is the first account of the first steam engine used for practical purposes outside of the United Kingdom. Martin Triewald (1691-1747), Swedish entrepreneur, engineer, and amateur physicist, came to London where he attended lectures on experimental philosophy by his friend and mentor Desaguliers. He "also assisted Newcomen with the erection of at least one of his engines."-Singer et al, A History of Technology, IV, p. 173. In 1716, Triewald was employed by Nicholas Ridley, whose family owned collieries and land in the Newcastle area. At that time, Ridley was interested in developing the Byker Colliery near Newcastle, a rich coal mine whose full potential, as with many others in the region, could not be realized owing to flooding. He proposed using Thomas Newcomen's lately invented steam engine to drain the mine, of which there were only eight or nine working in the country. Triewald studied the construction of a Newcomen engine in Newcastle and in 1722 obtained a patent for a larger engine. Triewald was to remain in the Newcastle area until 1726, as an inspector of a coal mine, during which time he claimed to have built four engines for the Ridley family, making many improvements. In 1726, Triewald returned to Sweden where he immediately a … [Click Below for Full Description]

LONGUE Louis Pierre de
à Andrinople [Paris]: chez Tomas Franco. First Edition. The book has also been attributed to Lenglet Dufresnoy and some Quesnel whose name is in the preface. See Peignot, Dictionary of condemned books Fire II, p. 53-54. Vintage cardboard. Back smooth threads. Part of title in black morocco. Utopia takes place in India, narrated by an Indian prince. Hindu women, announces the author, were ordered to burn after the death of their husbands. Princesses Malabares found expedient to this system by marrying as many husbands as possible, forcing each man to absolute fidelity. Through a description of the customs of the Malabar Island, the author establishes a satirical criticism of religious systems, tyrant of mankind. It is a curious relationship, where it is mainly ratio between men and women. The tale is full of puzzles and keys (see table of names with solving anagrams) that are not always easy to grasp. The book was burned at the stake by the decision of the Parliament of 31 December 1734. Ironically for a book whose first lines of the preface asserts that "man throws himself naturally [...] on everything that is forbidden ", including books condemned. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate. BORELLI Giov. Alfonso
[Attr … [Click Below for Full Description]

"Though the Thesaurus is now superseded, its merits must not be forgotten. It was vastly superior to anything of the kind that had appeared before; it formed the basis of future labors, and even as late as 1734 was considered worthy of being re-edited" (A.A. Tilley). The editors of this edition were four Cambridge scholars: Edmund Law, John Taylor, Thomas Johnson, and Sandys Hutchinson, who dedicated the work to their King, George II. They also provide a complete list of the books published by Estienne's publishing house, filling four folio pages in small type and in double column.

This work by Short was sponsored by the Royal Society and includes a preface addressing the society and Sir Hans Sloane, the president. The text offers the authors view, including why mineral waters are not beneficial to all, the history of mineral waters in Britain, rules for use, differences between waters found at Bath, Buxton, Matlock and Scarborough. Minerals found in the spa are mentioned, as well as shells and even diamonds. The effect of waters on kidney stones and other health benefits are mentioned. Sulphur is frequently referred to. Laudatory poem in praise of the new stadholder William IV also known as Willem Karel Hendrik Friso of Orange-Nassau (1711-1751), son of Johan Willem Friso, stadholder of Friesland and Groningen, who drowned at Moerdijk in the year of Willem Karel's birth. The family tree on the engraved title-page shows the coats of arms of the successors to the houses of Orange (left) and Nassau (right) and their wives, both beginning with William of Nassau (1487-1559) and his wife Juliana van Stolberg, the parents of William the Silent, and ending with Willem Karl and his wife. The poem celebrates the fact that Willem Karel, having already inherited the stadholdership of Friesland, Groningen and Drente from his father, and being stadholder of Gelderland since 1720, was proclaimed stadholder of all seven provinces of the Republic in May 1747, after the French had invaded Zeeuws-Vlaanderen and Brabant and had captured Maastricht and Breda. In the Dictionary, Bayle expressed his view that much that was considered to be "truth" was actually just opinion, and that gullibility and stubbornness were prevalent. The Dictionary remains an important scholarly work for several generations after its publication.
The majority of the entries are devoted to individual people, whether historical or mythical, though some articles treat religious beliefs and philosophies. Many of the more controversial ideas in the book were hidden away in the voluminous footnotes, or slipped into articles on seemingly uncontroversial topics.

Pierre Bayle was a Huguenot scholar who fled from French religious intolerance to Geneva and Holland. Albertus Seba
This stunning folio engraving is from the rare, originially hand-colored publication of Albertus Seba’s "Locupletissimi rerum naturalium thesauri accurata descriptio, et iconibus artificiosissimis expressio, per universam physices historiam". The work was published in Amsterdam by Janssonio-Waesbergios, & J. Wetstenium, & Gul. Smith between 1734 and 1765. Seba utilized leading scientists to aid in creating "Locupletissimi "including H. Boerhaave, P. van Musschenbroek, P. Massuet, H. D. Graubius, and P. Artedi. The work is the finest published Wunderkammer, or Cabinet of Curiosities. --- Seba developed an interest in exotic species from his travels on the East and West Indies and purchases from world travelers. He exploited his relationship with the Dutch East India Company to advance his collection thus gathering specimens from Sri Lanka, Greenland, Indonesia, Brazil, and other far-flung places. Many of the plates from the work depicted specimens from Seba’s own collection. The sensational engravings are both scientifically accurate and aesthetically appealing. --- Seba’s "cabinet of curiosities" included beautiful and bizarre subjects and attracted many natural historians, including Carl Linnaeus. Seba’s cabinet played an important part in the Linnaeus classification of the natural world. Maria Sybilla Merian also utilized his cabinet to complete her great work on Surinamese insects. Not lacking humor, Seba placed fake specimens in his cabinet including a seven-headed hydra in order to attract attention. Some of Seba’s original collection is still on display in museums aro … [Click Below for Full Description]

Small library label to front pastedown; pale staining to endpapers; a very good copy. Woodcut floral spray device on general title-page, printer's tulip ornament on the five subsequent title-pages. Folding engraved plate of Floraes Gecks-kap in the fourth part. Second collected edition of these cautionary texts regarding the tulip speculation in Holland in the 1630s. The collection begins with the rare three dialogues of Waermondt and Gaergoedt, first printed in 1637 by Adriaen Roman in Haarlem, "the most important contemporary source for the speculation" (Krelage, p. 13). Then follow the Sotte-Bollen, an anthology of satirical poems which had originally been published separately in 1637, and the Troost-brief (which was also first previously printed in 1637 in Haarlem, but by Hans Passchiers van Wesbusch). The Samenspraecken were written as an admonition to those involved in the tulip speculation and as a warning to future would-be speculators. They are "the best source for the tulip speculation from the time itself. Not only do they give the methods of how business was done, but they contain numerous details about the trade and the prices, and observations on the tulips themselves" (E. H. Krelage, Bloemenspeculatie in Nederland (Amsterdam, 1942), p. 74). OCLC locates 12 copies worldwide, of which 8 are in the Netherlands.
