Contemporary calf, rebacked, spine with blind-tooled ornament, gilt edges (wear to extremities). Amsterdam, Jaques Desbordes, First edition, first issue of Montesquieu's account of the might and subsequent decline of the Roman Empire, starting with the founding of Rome and ending with the fall of Constantinople in 1453. 'The first comprehensive philosophy of society' (PMM) it marked Montesquieu's shift in reputation from wit, to thinker and theorist and is an ?interesting example of early scientific non-religious history, in which events are traced to their natural causes, without reference to a guiding Providence? (Oxford Companion to French Literature). The first issue contains elements not present, or corrected in subsequent issues, most notably the uncorrected typo 'insensec' in the first line of the second note of p.129, and the controversial footnote, suppressed in later issues, on p.130 - 'Si Charles I si Jacques II avoient vécu dans une Religion.' - had Charles I and James II of England been of a religion that permitted suicide, they would not have had to suffer such a death, or such a life. Also present here are the other features of the first issue listed by Petit (pp.493-4) though in this issue the signatures of quire G are correct. The cancels and errata leaf not present here are only found in the second issue. Minor browning, generally good condition. Brunet III 1861. Tchemerzine VIII, 457a. Le Petit, 493-4. Kiøbenhafn, 7. Januarij, 1734. Folio. (31 x 20 cm.). Senere hshirt. Forgyldt titel på forpermen. Ialt 71 manuskriptsider (36 unnummerede blade). [Click Below for Full Description]

TANTZER, Johann
Leipzig: Weidmann, 1734. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. The best edition of the most important German language hunting book! Johan Tänzer was a 17th-century German hunting writer known exclusively for this treatise on the secrets of hunting. This book was without question the most extensive and most important hunting book in the German language throughout the 17th- and 18th-centuries. This book, which went through a number of varying titles, discuses hunting bear, boar, deer, wolves, birds, and other large game. Tanzer describes trapping techniques, shooting and aiming, and tracking; but, in addition to the interesting content, the plates are some of the most desirable hunting engravings ever published. According to Schwerdt, "The plates are curious and give a complete survey of all the features of a great state hunt." Tanzer also focues heavily on types and breeds of sport and hunting dogs - giving details on how to train dogs and the necessary skills they need to enhance a hunt. Perhaps the most interesting: "Sportsmen should accustom themselves diligently to speak French [any foreign language] to their dogs, in order that the dog, if lost, shall not be so easily made use of." This fourth edition is, to many collectors, considered the best edition of this book. It is thorough and the illustrations are incredible. A highly desirable piece of hunting history. The title comes from the mythological goddess Diana, the goddess of the hunt "The Diana - High and Low Hunting Secrets".

» - - - - - Rendering the story of a princess and a prince, this short story echoes the form that the tales and characters of the tales will take from the 17th and 18th centuries onwards. Charles Perrault is a major contributor, but we do not necessarily share the opinion of the public library catalogues that attribute this work to him. The author's note preceding the short story is the voice of a certain feminism: » . [Click Below for Full Description]

DESAGULIERS, John Theophilus (1683-1744).
London: John Senex, 1734; 1744. London:: John Senex, 1734; 1744., 1734. 2 volumes. 4to. [xxxii], [13]; xv, [1]; 568, [8] pp. 32 + 46 engraved plates, index. Original gilt-stamped calf, leather blind-stamped spine label; joints cracked, reinforced with kozo. Ownership signature on title [difficult to read: H--- Clarke?]. Very good. Rare. First edition of Desaguliers' most important work. Desaguliers was an experimental assistant to Newton, and, along with Keill and Pemberton, one of the greatest proponents of his works. The work "exerted a profound influence on Benjamin Franklin" (Taton). ". . . the long-promised first volume of the Course [of Experimental Philosophy] appeared in 1734, containing five long lectures and many additional notes. It is devoted wholly to theoretical and practical mechanics, including both a simple treatment of Newton's system of the world and a description of Mr. Allen's railroad at Bath. Desaguliers attributed the ten year delay before the appearance of his second tome to his desire to improve the treatment of machines, especially waterwheels. . .Continuing with mechanics, in seven lectures he discussed impact and elasticity, vis viva and momentum, heat, hydrostatics and hydraulics, pneumatics, meteorology, and more machines. This second volume is even more concerned with applied science and engineering than the first and entitles Desaguliers to be considered a forerunner of the more advanc … [Click Below for Full Description]

Woodward, at the Half Moon between the two Temple Gates, Fleet Street, and J. Brindley in New Bond-street, 1734. Wraps. Very good. Disbound wraps. 20 pages. Title on page 1. Intact but partial splits to the joints with some loosening of the gathering. The writer states on page 13, "No settlement was ever before established on so humane a plan. Slavery is absolutely prescribed from this Colony; the misfortune, if not the dishonour of other plantations. Let avarice defend it as it will, there is an honest reluctance in humanity against buying and selling, and regarding those of our own species as our wealth and possessions." The author also states on page 17, "This Colony is placed near many Indian Nations which are still plunged into the meanest Idolatries, busied in dishonest Superstitions, and deprived by ignorance and fears of the comforts of a life civilized by instruction and laws. The trustees of this Charity resolve to watch over the Virtue and Religion of the people committed to them." 36 copies located in OCLC. Scarce in the trade.
