A Amsterdam aux depens de la Compagnie, 1734 (ultimo volume: a Cologne, chez Pierre de La Vallée, 1739), voll. 4, in-12, legatura coeva in pieno vitello, dorso a 5 nervi con titolo, numero di volume e fregi fitomorfi impressi in oro negli scomparti, sguardie in carta marmorizzata "a pettine", tagli spruzzati, pp. (16), 404 - (12), 378 - (8), 372 - (8), 539, (25). Con tre ritratti incisi in rame alle antiporte dei primi tre volumi, frontespizi in rosso e nero. Si tratta dell'edizione di Amsterdam che si interruppe al vol. III (e che è quindi completa) più il volume IV ed ultimo dell'edizione di Colonia (edizione analoga che prosegue con la lettera seguente l'ultima del terzo volume di Amsterdam). Le Provinciali, capolavoro di Pascal, veemente attacco ai Gesuiti, dopo la prima uscita 1656-57) fu condannato al rogo per ordine della Congregazione dell'Indice. Salvo l'asportazione di un ex-libris sui contropiatti anteriori, bell'esemplare.

Johann Baptist Homann (1664 Oberkammlach - 1724 Nürnberg). Deutscher Kartograph, Verleger und Kupferstecher. Gründete 1702 seinen Verlag in Nürnberg. Lieferte etwa 200 Karten, darunter 1716 den 'Großen Atlas über die ganze Welt' und 1719 den 'Atlas methodicus'. Fertigte auch Armillarsphären und andere mechanische Kunstwerke. Mineral waters were discovered at Scarborough in 1626. This is one of three texts published in the 1730s that described the virtues of the mineral waters at Scarborough. These included accounts by John Atkins, Peter Shaw and Thomas Short. Short differentiated from the others in that in addition to recommending the mineral waters for a curing “bewildering range of complaints,” he also supported moderation in diet, exercise and liquor. This work by Short was sponsored by the Royal Society and includes a preface addressing the society and Sir Hans Sloane, the president. ¶ The text offers the authors view, including why mineral waters are not beneficial to all, the history of mineral waters in Britain, rules for use, differences between waters found at Bath, Buxton, Matlock and Scarborough. The first part deals with terrestrial globes and the second part, without additional title-page but with a different pagination, treats celestial globes. Johann Ludwig Hocker (1670-1746) discusses the Ptolemaic, Tyhonic and Copernican solar systems, geometry, the division of the earth in climatic zones, how to determine longitude and latitude, the equinox, how to draw a map, all accompanied by folded engraved plates with several globes, geometrical diagrams, a compass rose and a grid with German place names. In the part on celestial globes, Hocker explains how to use a celestial globe, how the constellations are arranged, ecliptics, etc. The illustrations to this part contain a beautiful armillary sphere, a celestial globe, a Copernican armillary sphere, a sundial and geometrical diagrams. Spine slightly chafed. Fine untrimmed copy.

Binding somewhat loose, with small cracks between textblock and spine. Textblock slightly darkened and with some occasional stains and some contemporary notes and underlining in ink. Flyleaf with an older bookplate (Falckiska Bibliotheket). Title with previous owner's signature and numbering and with small engraving. Very good engraved frontispice by Andreas Reinhardt the Elder (1676-1742). With a printed dedication from the author to the Danish and German princesses Anne Sophie (1647-1717) and Wilhelmine Ernestine (1650-1707).

Johann Ludwig Hocker (1670-1746) discusses the Ptolemaic, Tyhonic and Copernican solar systems, geometry, the division of the earth in climatic zones, how to determine longitude and latitude, the equinox, how to draw a map, all accompanied by folded engraved plates with several globes, geometrical diagrams, a compass rose and a grid with German place names. In the part on celestial globes, Hocker explains how to use a celestial globe, how the constellations are arranged, ecliptics, etc. The illustrations to this part contain a beautiful armillary sphere, a celestial globe, a Copernican armillary sphere, a sundial and geometrical diagrams. A later reduced format edition of Perrault’s Memoires of 1671-1676, Perrault’s study of this nature was first published in 1669 with the results of investigations of five animals and later expanded with studies of over forty animals. Binders full calf porphyry time. Back with five nerves decorated with parts of title and volume numbers of red morocco, coffered and gilded florets. Triple gilt fillets coaching dishes. All marbled edges. Tail jaws split six inches in the first volume, same thing on the second and fourth. Tail cap of the second volume threadbare. Three caps head and two tails restored and some reinforced corners. Some scuffs. A pale wetness in Volume I, and some very tiny and rare spots.
