Chetwood, William]
Printed for J. Marshall, London, 1734. 219,[3],42pp. 12mo. Modern three-quarter morocco and marbled boards, spine gilt. Bottom portion of spine darkened. Bookplates on front endpapers, foxed, tanned, a few old dampstains. Small chip at bottom of titlepage, not affecting text. Good. The "fourth edition, corrected." A shipwreck narrative with Americana interest because of the victim's experiences with the Indians of the Virginia Tidewater region. Originally published in 1720, authorship of this work has been attributed to William Rufus Chetwood, a London playwright. "Falconer, an Englishman, came to Boston in May, 1689. Early in June he set out for Virginia. His ship was grounded off Cape Charles. According to Chetwood's account, Falconer was attacked by the Indians, captured, stripped, and tied to a stake. He was finally released when he showed the Indians how to 'let blood'" - Clark. Field wrote of this book and other English fiction at the time: "they are generally written.with such a profound gravity, and freedom from dramatic colloquialisms, that they leave the reader vexed with a doubt if they are wholly fictitious, or not as generally truthful as the boasted veritable narratives." SABIN 23723. CLARK I:62. FIELD 520. HUNTRESS 40C. AYER 93 (1st ed). [Attributes: First Edition]

DEFOE, Benjamin Norton?)
Printed for W. Mears. 1734 - [16], 376pp, engraved folding map bound as a frontispiece. 8vo. Some sl. worming to blank lower margin from page 253, single hole to page 301 then sl. more noticeable. Handsome full contemporary calf, gilt panelled spine, red morocco label. F.e.ps pasted down on to boards. ESTC T139730, the first English edition, and indicating that the author is not Count Bonneval. A second edition was published in 1736, under the title, Memoirs of the Famous Bashaw Bonneval. Our research indicates that the translator J. Sparrow also appears to be fictitious; ESTC records ?Sparrow? as author of A New English Dictionary in 1739, noting that the name is a pseudonym for Benjamin Norton Defoe. Benjamin, a hack writer, is thought to be the illegitimate son of Daniel Defoe, although the evidence is inconclusive. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

In many cases there is still nothing better than Bayle's criticism' (Cabeen). Especially for this edition extensive comments were added by the abbé Le Clerc at the end of each volume. The fifth edition was in fact pirated from the 1730 edition, but held in esteem as the so-called 'Trévoux' edition, with approbations of the States of Holland and West Frisia, and of the Duc du Maine (see: Elisabeth Labrousse, Pierre Bayle et l'instrument critique , 1965, p. 183).The complete version of the controversial article 'David' has been integrated in the text of volume 2, the shorter version is also added after the approbation on pp. 1000 as the pages 1001-1004 of volume 2.The pages 529-532 in volume 5 are preceded by the pages (529-530) and these contain additions to the letter V.

CORTESI, Paolo.
Accedit auctoris Vita. Florentiae, apud Bernardum Paperinjum, sub signo Palladis, e Herculis MDCCXXXIV (Firenze 1734). in-4, pp. (8), XXII, (2), 56. Legatura antica piena pergamena. Ottimo esemplare. Diz.Biogr.Ital., XXIX, pp.766-770. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

(QUR'AN; English.)
London: by C. Ackers for J. Wilcox,, 1734. Translated into English immediately from the Original Arabic; with Explanatory Notes, taken from the most approved Commentators. To which is prefixed A Preliminary Discourse. By George Sale. Quarto (248 x 190 mm). A very good copy. First edition of Sale's Qur'an, the first English translation of the Qur'an to be made directly from the Arabic, and the basis for all subsequent English editions until the mid-nineteenth century; previously the only complete English translation had been Alexander Ross's 1649 version, which relied solely on the 1647 French edition by Alexandre du Ryer. George Sale was a solicitor and "the first notable English Arabist who was not in holy orders … From 1726 to 1734 he was closely associated with the Society for the Propagation of Christian Knowledge, which he served in his legal capacity. Meanwhile he was working on a translation of the Qur'an … a landmark in the history of Qur'anic studies" (Holt, Studies in the History of th … [Click Below for Full Description]

AFAN DE RIBERA, Fulgencio (pseud.?).
Madrid, En la Libreria de Fernando Monge, 1734. 8°, contemporary calf (some wear), smooth spine with gilt bands and ornaments, text block edges sprinkled red. Woodcut initial. Upper margins cut close, touching an occasional letter. Very minor worming, with loss of a letter or two on 4 leaves. A few small stains. In good to very good condition overall. (12 ll.), 70 pp., (1 l.). *** Second edition of a work first published Pamplona, 1729, and frequently reprinted. This satire on hypocrisy in both secular and religious life, written in the form of letters from a father to his son, bears a resemblance to Quevedo's Libro de todas las cosas. The work has been attributed by some to the celebrated satirist Fr. José Isla de la Torre y Rojo (1703-1781), perhaps because the first edition was published anonymously, but this edition clearly identifies Afan de Ribera as the author. Aguilar Piñal suggests that Afan de Ribera is actually a pseudonym for Fr. Manuel Bernardo de Ribera.*** Palau 2994: citing also a Barcelona edition of 1734. Aguilar Piñal I, 260: citing only an imperfect copy at the Biblioteca Municipal, Madrid. Ward, Oxford Companion to Spanish Literature p. 6. CCPBE locates three copies: Biblioteca Pública del Estado-Ciudad Real, Biblioteca-Museo Victor Balaguer-Barcelona, and Biblioteca Histórica Municipal in Madrid. Rebiun locates many other printed editions, none earlier than 1813, and a manuscript dated 1784. Copac repeats British Library. Not located in NUC. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

ROLLIN, Charles.
London: James, John and Paul Knapton 1734 - The first four volumes of Rollin’s history in First Edition. Contemporary full mottled leather, with burgundy and black labels. Six raised bands. Red and black title pages. Title pages to vols. 2-4 read: ". and Grecians" (instead of "and Greeks") Vol. I & II are dated 1734, Vols. III & IV. 1735. There is a little rubbing to the boards, particularly to volume one, which has loss to the surface of the front board. This is also cracking to the spine edges. The boards of volume one are quite loose, but still holding. Internally, the books are all clean and tidy throughout, with just a little foxing / darkening to the pages. Folding woodcut plan of Syracuse to Vol. III. Beautiful folding woodcut of the Middle East (retreat of the ten thousand) to Vol. IV. Small woodcut devices to the ends of each book. Charles Rollin (1661-1741) was a French academic and educationalist, in 1699 he was appointed principal of the Collège de Beauvais. Hi Jansenist principles led to limits on his progression, and Rollin's literary work dates chiefly from the later years of his life, when he had been forbidden to teach. His Ancient history was in much part a compilation, and was a generally uncritical study. [xii], i-xxxii, [viii], 1-384., [viii], viii, 1-391, [ix]., [xii], i-xxxiii, 34-500., ix, [v], 1-358, [iv]. His collection also included some fantasy animals, intended to attract attention and interest, such as a seven-headed hydra.
